Chicago Westside Police and Youth Sports is proud to welcome the Olympic sport of Archery into its sports program. Archers will be trained by Team USA certified instructors to create a competitive archery team based on the Westside. This program is supported through partnerships with the Chicago Police Department, local churches and nonprofits within city of Chicago agencies. Enrollment for children ages 8-13 will be limited to the first 30 children. New sections will be opened as new locations are found. The Archery Program will be located in Rock of Our Salvation Church, next to the Circle Urban Ministries/Catalyst School Complex. Practice will be every Thursday and involves beginner instruction based on Team USA Archery guidelines. Further, character and leadership key concepts as Faith, Integrity, Sacrifice, Leadership and Legacy (FISLL) will be integrated in instruction.

feature of the conference is it’s

“bases loaded” feature that combines

the unified efforts of local police,

churches, community organizations

to promote positive, transforming

change. Areas highlighted include

health and wellness, education,

mentoring and athletic excellence.

Chicago Westside Police and Youth Baseball is an instructional baseball league focused on learning the game of baseball in a fun atmosphere that also promotes the values of Faith, Integrity, Sacrifice, Leadership and Legacy (FISLL). The conference is made up of teams from the 10th, 11th, 15th, and 25th Police Districts that play 9 games "across district" and a 10th ALL STAR game comprised of players from each district. Enrollment for children ages 8-14 will be limited to the first 700 children. Practices will be held Tuesdays with games on either Thursday evening or Saturday morning at the park chosen at registration. Team uniform of ball cap, jersey, belt and socks are provided. Each team is issued catcher's gear, bats and helmets. Players may use their own Little League approved bats. Player-owned helmets must have a face guard for levels below Majors. Baseball pants and glove are required for all players. Chicago Westside Police and Youth Baseball does have extra gloves and limited sizes of pants and cleats if needed.

GARFIELD PARK LITTLE LEAGUE was founded in 2008. The mission of the GPLL is to establish baseball on Chicago’s westside as a viable sport as well as a teaching tool towards accountability, leadership skills and character building. The yearly goal is to provide activities that will keep us connected with our youth during the off season. Many activities are geared towards providing opportunities through athletic training, experiential education and motivation to empower youth to become positive contributors to society.

CAPS is the partnership between police and community which is the foundation of Chicago’s own philosophy of community policing. What makes CAPS innovative is that it brings the police, the community, and other City agencies together to identify and solve neighborhood crime problems, rather than simply react to their symptoms after the fact. Problem solving at the neighborhood level is supported by a variety of strategies, including neighborhood-based beat officers; regular Beat Community Meetings involving police and residents; extensive training for both police and community; more efficient use of City services that impact crime; and new technology to help police and residents target crime hot spots.

CITY OF REFUGE – CHICAGO exists to bring light, hope, and transformation to individuals and families on the westside of Chicago. We do this through a collaborative impact model partnering with established organizations giving the greatest reach and impact in the community. The goal is to empower each individual and family by taking a holistic approach, ensuring all areas of a person’s life are adequately supported.

This Spring marks the second year people will hear the sounds of baseball in their local parks as the Austin Police Youth League, now known as the Chicago Westside Police and Youth Sports Conference starts its season soon. The league, started by the 15th Police District Faith-Based subcommittee under the leadership of Pastor Steve Epting of Hope Community Church with the help of Westside Health Authority, has continued to gain momentum. The successful model of a church partnering with a nonprofit supporting each team continues to make a huge impact. Since its founding with 100 players and recent name change, the league is expected to grow to upwards of 700 participants all from the westside playing summer baseball. Additionally, instructional classes for the Olympic sport of Archery will begin in March at Rock of Our Salvation Church in the Austin neighborhood. Why the expansion? The Chicago Westside Police and Youth Sports Conference made a significant impact on the Chicago’s westside neighborhoods last year in the 15th District. There was a decrease in crime and a positive impact on police and community relations since the league’s beginning, and the youth had a great time playing baseball. When other police districts saw the impact the league had on the community and law enforcement, they wanted to be a part of it. This year, the baseball program will now include the 10th, 11th, 15th and 25th Districts, making it the largest police and youth sports program Chicago’s westside has ever had. Further, all uniforms and equipment for participants will likely be free of charge, thanks in large part to the generosity of Good Sports via Cubs Charities. Through the donation of new baseball equipment and apparel, Good Sports and Cubs Charities is able to provide The Chicago Westside Police and Youth Sports Conference with the necessary equipment to make this hugely impactful league successful and accessible to everyone. Registration for volunteers and participants interested in baseball opens on March 1.

Archery registration is TBD.
