The Week at DMPC

January 2017

Drawing on our heritage, centered in Jesus Christ, looking to the future; Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church reaches out with the Gospel to our community and the world.

Pastors Letter: The New Year is upon us, and we hear of our family and friends making new year resolutions, and often hear our loved ones pray that 2017 be filled with love, joy, health, or something positive for the future. It occurs to me that the idea and opportunity to “begin anew” is a basic yearning rooted in the Christian tradition. The Old Testament notion of repentance was constantly a message of the prophets, who invited their hearers to return to God’s ways. Jesus affirms this invitation to repentance and offers us hope that the Kingdom of God is at hand, or even within us! Not just on Jan. 1st, but everyday, followers of Jesus are exhorted to start afresh, and live into the blessings of God. So what are you looking forward to in 2017? What can God do with you and/or our church in 2017? How is God a part of your own New Year’s resolutions? Look forward! Scripture tells us that our best days are in front of us! May your new year be blessed,

Kevin

The Chrismon Tree… Every Advent, the Presbyterian Women at Davis Memorial decorate a tree in the sanctuary with beautiful gold and white ornaments called Chrismons. But what are Chrismons? The tradition of Chrismons was started in 1971 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Danville, Virginia. Frances Kipps Spencer, the daughter of a Lutheran minister, began thinking of ways to decorate a Christmas tree that would reflect the Christian faith. As Ms. Spencer imagined what she would do, she first created symbols that were monograms for the Greek word for Christ. Later she created crosses and other symbols of the Christian faith. These symbols speak of Christ's life, ministry, activities, nature and teachings. Under the capable leadership of Kitty Kyle, the Women of the Church of Davis Memorial (now the Presbyterian Women) made the first Chrismons that were put on our tree in 1979. Kitty used her very own hand as a model for the 'Hand Descending from a Cloud' Chrismon! Over several years, more Chrismons were made and added. On the three Advent Sundays in December, several Chrismons were introduced to the congregation during the children's chat in worship and then put on our tree. Many thanks to Kitty and all the women of DMPC who made and repaired our beautiful Chrismons over the years. They are wonderful symbols of our Christian faith.

Scholarship Awards… The DMPC Women’s Scholarship was originally the Minta Hopkins Ogilvie Scholarship, established in memory of the wife of George Ogilvie, a former pastor of the church. This scholarship is given annually to a high school graduate enrolled in a college or vocational program. The Women’s budget funds one $500.00 scholarship. We are happy to announce that this year we are able to give scholarships to more recipients due to a donation from the Dr. Lacy Sunday School Class and other donations given to the fund during the year. Recipients are: Levi Fath, son of Rick & Tracy Fath and grandson of Sue & Holt Chenoweth. Levi is a sophomore, majoring in Geology at WVU. Emily Caplinger, daughter of Jeff Caplinger and Thelma Caplinger and granddaughter of Hope and the late Fred Caplinger. Emily is a Junior, majoring in Political Science at Marshall University. Katie Varchetto, daughter of Pat & Monica Varchetto and granddaughter of Judy Guye Swanson. Katie is a Junior majoring in Theater Arts and minoring in Mathematics at D&E College. A $250.00 Scholarship was given to: Hunter Fath, son of Rick & Tracy Fath and grandson of Sue & Holt Chenoweth. Hunter is graduating this winter from Davis & Elkins College with a major in Business Management. Elise Cardot, daughter of Rev. Rich and Amy Cardot and granddaughter of Richard & Martha Cardot. Elise is a Junior at Davis & Elkins College majoring in Exercise Science. A graduation gift was given to Matthew Maynard, son of Ken and Ralphene Maynard and grandson of Fay Maynard. Matthew received a BS degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College, majoring in Biology. He graduated this fall from Alderson Broaddus College in the Physician’s Assistant program. We are blessed that these recipients are “children of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church “, active and faithful members of Sunday School and the Youth.

Nativity Sets... Presbyterian Women and the Christian Education Committee would like to thank those who shared their wonderful nativity sets with us this Christmas season. Some were old family heirlooms, others hand-made, several from other countries. It exemplified the scope of size from very small to extremely large. It also exemplified the scope of Christianity around the globe. They added to our beloved contribution by Wilma Johnson which has graced our sanctuary for many years. Thanks to Mina Cupp, Anna Harper, the Starchers, the Vials, the Simmons, the McDonalds, Dana Marzolf, Diana Kerr, and the Hermansons.
