Alison Johnston wins UACES best thesis award 2012! The EI is proud to announce that its recent PhD graduate Alison Johnston's thesis on ‘European Monetary Union and Institutional Change: The Perverse Effects of Supranational Macroeconomic Regimes on Wage Inflation' won the UACES best thesis award 2012. Alison Johnston’s thesis on European Monetary Union and Institutional Change: The Perverse Effects of Supranational Macroeconomic Regimes on Wage Inflation’ won the UACES best thesis award 2012. Dr Waltraud Schelkle wrote about Alison’s thesis: Alison's thesis analyses the wage dynamics that could be observed in some EMU member states since the late 1990s. She finds a strong rise of wages in the public or sheltered sectors and moderate wage increases in the sectors exposed to trade competition. The explanation is sought in the removal of the monetary policy constraint under the EMS and the weakening of the conditionality of the Maastricht process. Her findings are highly relevant in that they can help us to understand why inflation rates started to diverge after the onset of EMU, one of the unanticipated phenomena that can help to explain the crisis through which we live now. The jury praised her innovative and focused take on a well-known topic, namely wage developments in EMU, as well as her methodological pluralism, combining econometrics with qualitative country comparisons’. LSEErsquos Dr James Ker-Lindsayrsquos new book ldquoThe Foreign Policy of Counter Secession Preventing the Recognition of Contested Statesrdquo will be published by Oxford University Press in December

2012 How do states prevent the recognition of territories that have unilaterally declared independence At a time when the issue of secession is becoming increasingly significant on the world stage this is the first book to consider this crucial question Analysing the efforts of the governments of Serbia Georgia and Cyprus to prevent the international recognition of Kosovo South Ossetia Abkhazia and northern Cyprus the work draws on in depth interviews with a number of leading policy makers to explain how each of the countries has designed developed and

implemented its counter secession strategies After explaining how the principle of the territorial integrity of states has tended to take precedence over the right of self-determination it examines the range of ways countries facing a separatist threat can prevent recognition by other states and considers the increasingly important role played by international and regional organisations especially the United Nations in the recognition process Additionally it shows how forms of legitimisation or acknowledgement are also central elements of any counter-recognition process and why steps to prevent secessionist entities from participating in major sporting and cultural bodies are given so much attention Finally it questions the effects of these counter recognition efforts on attempts to solve these territorial conflicts Drawing on history politics and internation-al law this book is the first and only comprehensive account of this increas-

hellip with Dr Mareike Kleine Lecture in EU Politics European Institute

Mareike we are very happy to have you back with us of course Tell us a bit about your one year in the States and what was the very highlight of your stay there for you MK Thanks a lot Good to be back The goal of my stay in the US was to finish my book manuscript on informal governance in the EU and Irsquom very happy to have accomplished this goal Beyond this I had a fantastic year met many new

colleagues made new friends saw different places and got to read a lot The very highlight of my year was a road trip through the Deep South I got to experience a completely different absurd side of the States How do you feel about returning back to the EI after a yearrsquos break and back to teaching marking MSc students and all the package Are your batteries fully charged MK Yes I was able to recharge my batteries I didnrsquot get to have a break between submitting my dissertation and teaching at LSE and it was great to have time for my research and myself After a year however I felt that I had reached a plateau I would not have made many more new experiences if I had stayed much longer Irsquom happy to face new challenges like teaching new courses and meeting new students Spending a year in the US what was that one thing that you missed from the UK (or LSE even) and what did you find unique in the States that you never saw anywhere before MK I missed the 5th floor faculty restaurant at LSE (not the food though) Itrsquos a great place to catch up and meet colleagues from other departments Americans rarely take time for lunch The unique thing about the US ndash at least in comparison with Europe - is the massive space the wide horizons and giant blue sky Europe and London in particular is always crowded and usually cloudy ndash which can

make you a bit claustrophobic from time to time

Sixty-second Interview

Page 9 Monthly European Institute Newsletter

Is there anything at all that British academia should feel envious of the American academia (be honest) And would you recommend US students to take up postgraduate studies in the UK MK I think American academics have a more positive attitude towards new ideas Itrsquos far easier to meet even if briefly with senior faculty to discuss your ideas I sometimes get the impression that in the UK and in Europe in general academics sometimes forget that in order to come up with an idea you first have to expose yourself to those of others Therefore Irsquod recommend every student no matter if from the US or the UK to spend at least one year at a different university in a different country A few things now about Mareikehellip What was the best advice yoursquove ever been given MK During my undergraduate studies in Germany when I was a bit confused what political science is all about one of my professors saw my frustration took me aside and told me ldquoThe key to social sciences and humanities is to read everything you get your hands on no matter if Shakespeare or Habermasrdquo If you were offered the trip of a lifetime where would you like to go and why MK I donrsquot think there is such a thing You can have many equally valuable experiences in your lifetime But if you asked me what kind of trip Irsquod like to do next Irsquod probably do another road trip with a local where Irsquod just go where I want to go and get to know and blend in with the idiosyncratic people and communities of the country Where would you go if you were invisible for a day MK Irsquod go to the next conclave to mess with the papal election What book do you wish yoursquod written MK Irsquom glad that the books I love such as Hermann Hessersquos Demian Thomas Mannrsquos Buddenbrooks or Goethersquos Young Werther were written by others Else I would not have learned anything from read-ing them But I am glad to have written my own book and to think that somebody will like it and perhaps learn something from it And last but not leasthellip What three items would you rush to save from a fire MK Just my laptop Itrsquos packed with information

and memories I donrsquot need much else

LSEErsquos Dr James Ker-Lindsayrsquos new book ldquoThe Foreign Policy of Counter Secession Preventing the Recognition of Contested Statesrdquo will be published by Oxford University Press in December

2012 How do states prevent the recognition of territories that have unilaterally declared independence At a time when the issue of secession is becoming increasingly significant on the world stage this is the first book to consider this crucial question Analysing the efforts of the governments of Serbia Georgia and Cyprus to prevent the international recognition of Kosovo South Ossetia Abkhazia and northern Cyprus the work draws on in depth interviews with a number of leading policy makers to explain how each of the countries has designed developed and

implemented its counter secession strategies After explaining how the principle of the territorial integrity of states has tended to take precedence over the right of self-determination it examines the range of ways countries facing a separatist threat can prevent recognition by other states and considers the increasingly important role played by international and regional organisations especially the United Nations in the recognition process Additionally it shows how forms of legitimisation or acknowledgement are also central elements of any counter-recognition process and why steps to prevent secessionist entities from participating in major sporting and cultural bodies are given so much attention Finally it questions the effects of these counter recognition efforts on attempts to solve these territorial conflicts Drawing on history politics and internation-al law this book is the first and only comprehensive account of this increas-

ingly important field of foreign policy

LEQS ndash LSE lsquoEurope in Questionrsquo has published a new discussion paper by Prof Kevin Featherstone ldquoLe choc de la nouvelle Maastricht deacutejagrave vu and EMU reformrdquo in September 2012 This paper explores the extent to which current reforms of the euro-zonersquos governance remain encased in the constraints of the Maastricht

Treaty - the narrowness of its underlying paradigm the gaps and imbalances of its design ndash and the implications for the future of the euro With a model of lsquosound money sound financesrsquo based on the precepts of German ordo-liberalism a vulnerability was exposed it lacked the instruments not only to aid but also to police This was exacerbated by the shallowness of public legitimation ignored from the outset The uncertainty delays and division displayed by the euro-zonersquos response to the crisis owed much to the lsquolock-inrsquo of Maastricht The paper includes a critical reassessment of Dyson

ldquoThe LSE Companion to Health Policy 2012rdquo (edited by Alistair McGuire and Joan Costa-Font) was published by Edward Elgar in

August 2012 The LSE Companion to Health Policy covers a wide range of conceptual and practical issues from a number of different perspectives introducing the reader to and summarising the vast literature that analyses the complex-ities of health policy The Companion also assesses the current state of the art

Health policy is a wide-ranging subject covering many academic disciplines but what most studies in health policy have in common is an interest in applying theory to improve practice This Companion brings academic rigour to bear evidence on a range of central areas within health policy It covers key issues on the quality access and inequalities in health and health care supply and health markets insurance and expenditures pharmaceuticals and new technologies and

aging and long-term care This unique Companion on health policy contains the most important features for health system reform at a time of funding constraints and will therefore hold great appeal for policy analysts and makers students a c a d e m i c s a n d m a n a g e m e n t p r o f e s s i o n a l s
