December is always a very exciting and busy month for gigging musicians. I often compare it to tax season for accountants. Before I started touring internationally and was still gigging around LA, I remember December felt like a great big family reunion as you’d often get to see friends on gigs that you sometimes hadn’t seen in years. What our audiences sometimes don’t know is that hearing bands around town in December is like watching a pro-sports team in the play-offs. The players are tired and a little beat up from a long year, but they are playing their ab-solute best because they’re just in this great rhythm of activity, gigs, rehearsals, and creativity.

This month, in the “On The Record” section, we’ll take a little time to get to know singer-song-writer Jasmine Tomasso. Jasmine is originally from Rome, Italy and is making great waves around the Southern California music scene. Every week we get dozens of inquiries from artists seeking to perform in our lobby lounge music series, and about two years ago Jasmine was a true needle in the haystack amongst the submissions. From the moment I heard her interpreta-tion of Yellow by Coldplay I knew that she had an original voice, and a refreshingly mature ap-proach to music. In our conversation you’ll see that Jasmine comes from an extremely notewor-thy family of artists, and really does bring a unique perspective to her music through her life travels and personal perspective.

Lastly, as you probably already know Hotel Casa Del Mar is one of the absolute best locations in Los Angeles for New Years Eve Celebrations. This year is going to be particularly exciting as you can actually reserve your own private cabana for you and your friends! You’ll be able to eat, drink, dance and party all night in an amazing room with one of our most popu-lar event bands: Soul Station Featuring Lola Delon. Make sure to reserve your space now, as space is already filling up!

As always, if you enjoy the music series, please take a moment to mention it to the artists, or better yet tag @HotelCasaDelMar in your social media posts and tell the world to come join you for a song and a drink!

Cheers,

On the Record

W I T H

Each month in this section, we feature a different one of our On The Beat artists for an informal interview. This month we’d like to introduce you to a wonderful singer-songwriter from Rome, Italy: Ms. Jasmine Tomasso.

On The Beat (OTB): So I know you grew up in Italy. Tell me a bit about where you grew up and how you ended up living in Los Angeles?

Jasmine Tomasso (JT): ): Yes, I was born and raised in Rome. My father is Italian and my mother is American. We came to visit family in the States nearly every summer. In 2001 we came for a few months and, well, sort of never left. I finished High School in Dana Point and then went to UC Santa Cruz. I returned to Italy after graduation and after a few years made my way back to California. My mother grew up in So Cal and we often visited the Orange County and LA area. My father (Legendary Italian Bassist Giovanni Tomasso) would come with us as well, but he didn’t always come to play.

OTB: Tell me a bit about your time in Rome both growing up and when you returned after college. What is life like as a somewhat jazz centered musician there?

JT: Growing up in Rome was amazing. I miss the city at times, but I’m lucky I get to go back at least once a year. The reason I have such fond memories of my childhood though, are primarily because of the unique experience I had having two artists as parents. At the time, my mother had her own dance school. As a choreographer, she was both teaching dance, as well as dancing in very well known modern companies in Rome. My father is one of the most important Italian bass players. As the leader of many original projects, he played both across Italy and Europe. Growing up in a household where the arts came first was a true gift. I spent time in Theaters across the city as well as smoky underground jazz clubs since our parents often took my brother and I with them.

OTB: How do you compare your musical experience there to being here in Los Angeles? What are some of your favorite things about the LA music scene?

JT: The main difference lies in the vast number of opportunities there are to perform and present your music. Here in Los Angeles there are so many wonderful ways to share your art. The amount of musicians you meet at concerts, jam sessions around town, people in the industry...they are everywhere! There really is that sense of possibility that’s a little hard to come by in a city like Rome. And I moved out here because I longed to do things on my own, without relying on my father’s name or connections. I am so happy I did!

OTB: As many of our guests are well traveled and may find themselves in Rome, what is your “must do” recommendation for them while visiting there?

14

JT: If they had time to do nothing else, I’d tell them to go see the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and walk the tiny streets of Trastevere after enjoying delicious pasta and drinking red wine. I’m dreaming about it myself!

OTB: I’ve heard you sound amazing on everything from jazz standards, to songs by Coldplay, The Doors, and even the blues. You always sound at home in the style and like yourself at the same time. Stylistically, where do you call your musical home?

JT: It’s always been one of the most difficult questions to answer. An artist has a way of bringing together a variety of styles without making them sound “unrelated”. For me, jazz has been the glue that has held everything together. My dad’s music has infused our household since birth, so it has most definitely

affected who I am as an artist. However, I have fallen in love with some many other styles throughout my life that today I would define myself as a hybrid of soul/jazz/pop.

OTB: I find that the setting at Casa Del Mar is such a large influence on artists performances in the space. How do you feel your performances at Casa are different than other places? What do you hope people take away from your performances?

JT: What I love about performing at Casa Del Mar is that the music and the atmosphere become one: they influence each other and create an unforgettable experience for everyone. As artists, we create a story through music, we paint the evening with our songs, and just like music in a film, the soundtrack affects each scene. This is the magic of music, and I feel it happening so strongly at Casa Del Mar. It’s a very special place.

OTB: What are you working on lately? What’s next for you and your career?

JT: I just released my second album recorded in Rome with my father, entitled “Nelle Mie Corde”. We are performing both here and in Europe and I am very proud of this project. As for what is next, I am collaborating with guitarist Lorenzo Grassi on an entirely new project. We have recorded several songs and are defining our sound. But it’s still in the

early stages so we’ll see how it evolves!
