MONTANA’S LITERARY TREASURES
POEMS AND PROSE
IN MONTANA“Summertime in Montana, I be-
come a monosyllabic baboon,” said
writer Thomas McGuane in an 1889
People magazine article about his
affi nity for Montana. “I want to ride
with the cowboys, go to brandings,
doctor cattle, and train my horses.
But in a few months, the snow starts
to fl y. The days become shorter; the
yellow color of interior light becomes
delicious. I look at my shelves, and
every book just glows, and I want to
be inside of that.”
Writers who have drawn inspira-
tion from the ever widening Montana
sceneries and changing seasons
will surely resonate with McGuane’s
sentiments. Locals and visitors alike
often welcome the change, while
others lament the impending waning
sun and frosted car windows. Which
do you choose?
Our Montana Authors Project will
allow you to visit the sites that have
been the settings of famous works
that have attracted literary fans for
decades. Using images, quotes, and
interpretation, literary maps bring
favorite novels, stories, poems and
personal stories of regional and na-
tional importance to life. Each literary
map can be used as a virtual tour of
an author’s imagination, as well as an
actual road map of a literary setting.
Visit www.humanitiesmontana.com
and discover where Norman Mac-
clean drew his inspiration for A River
Runs Through It. Learn how Ivan
Doig’s time spent along the beautiful
Two Medicine River on the Black-
feet Indian Reservation gave way
to stories told in This House of Sky:
Landscapes of a Western Mind. Learn
about Montana’s Poet Laureate Low-
ell Jaeger and the important work he
has done for young minds by encour-
aging expression through poetry.
Humanities Montana strengthens
communities through stories, con-
versation, and refl ection. We provide
cultural programs, grant opportuni-
ties, special initiatives and events that
celebrate and promote engagement
with the humanities around the great
state of Montana. We also manage
the Montana Center for the Book, a
program of the Center for the Book
in the Library of Congress, whose
mission is to promote awareness
of books, writing, reading, the book
arts, publishing and literacy in Mon-
tana. Visit our event calendar and
learn more on our website.
We hope you are able to draw as
much inspiration from your time spent
in Montana as the great writers of our
time have been able to. Stay curious,
and let the books, poems, and words
come to you as you travel on.
The smell, once water has rinsed it,
is like a field of ripe grain, or the grain held
in a truck, and if you climb the steel side,
one foot lodged on the hubcap, the other
on the wheel, and pull your body upward,
your hands holding to tarp hooks, and lift toes
onto the rim of the truck box, rest your ribs
against the side, you will see beetles
and grasshoppers among the hulled kernels.
Water stirs and resurrects harvest dust:
sun beating on abundance, the moist heat
of grain collected in steel, hands
plunging and lifting, the grain spilling back.
