Fewer available resources, more mouths to feed, a greater demand for fiber, fuel and feed—

two years ago Monsanto announced its response to the daunting challenges facing

agriculture. On June 4, 2008, we publicly committed to working alongside farmers to

produce more (double yields), conserve more (reduce inputs by one-third per unit of output),

and improve lives between 2000 and 2030.

“Monsanto is a sustainable agriculture company -- it's who we are,” Jerry Steiner, corporate

affairs and sustainability lead, said. “Sustainable agriculture involves better breeding, better

biotech, and better agronomics. All three are needed to meet the world's needs, and we feel

we have a lot to contribute. It is what we can do as a part of the bigger picture of meeting

    agriculture’s challenges.”
