Local blogger John Crawford is declaring “vic-tory” over the city of Sierra Madre in a lawsuit that was settled with the city accepting no wrong doing.

In fact, not one item in the suit was triumphant. The taxpayers of Sierra Madre footed the bill for this suit for which the full costs have yet to be assessed according to city manager Elaine Aguilar,

“We do not have a time estimate on the amount of time the City staff spent re-searching and defending the City against the lawsuit. The City did however incur attor-ney fees, but I won’t have the amount for another few weeks – there is about a one to two month lag in our receipt of at-torney invoices.” Aguilar said.

The alleged proposition 218 violation was unfounded. Crawford agreed to “settle” the case before continuing the costly litigation.

Maintaining their inno-cence from any wrong doing regarding the water rate hike issue throughout the proceed-

ings, the city of Sierra Madre challenged the complaint after former Mayor Kurt Zimmer-man filed suit on behalf of

Crawford.In May of 2011, John

Crawford filed a lawsuit in hopes of invalidating the

City’s recent water rate in-crease. In June, the City re-sponded to the lawsuit chal-lenging the complaint; and

shortly thereafter the plaintiff approached the City seeking a “non-monetary settlement” ac-cording to a city issued press

release Monday. “The City was very confi-

dent it would prevail in court; however, the City Council decided to accept Mr. John Crawford’s settlement offer and the case was officially dis-missed on July 29th. The City Council agreed to accept the settlement offer, basing their decision upon what they felt was best for the City’s resi-dents and water customers, noting that further judicial proceedings would result in additional legal fees. In ex-change for the dismissal, the City agreed that in the event the City was to consider a wa-ter rate increase, before May 1, 2014, the City would con-tinue to provide water custom-ers with a Fact Sheet, similar to one it provided during the last rate increase process, as well as information regarding low income discounts, which is always available at City Hall and the Public Library. The City expressly denied that it breached any duty or obli-

Crawford Lawsuit Dismissed - Blogger Gets No ReliefThe City of Sierra Madre Expressly Denied that it Breached any Duty or Obligation, and Maintains it fully Complied with the Proposition 218 Rate Increase Process

On July 31t in the early morning hours, the Pasa-dena Fire and Police Depart-ments responded to a fire in a detached structure in the 100 Block of S. San Marino Avenue. The fire was extin-guished and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

On August 2nd shortly before noon, a private arson investigator went to the loca-

tion to conduct a follow up investigation. During his in-vestigation he discovered a deceased body in the back-yard structure. He immedi-ately called 911 and police officers responded.

Pasadena Fire Depart-ment Arson Investigators and police detectives are conduct-ing an investigation into the death. The body has not

been identified at this time. If anyone saw anything

suspicious between July 31 and August 1st, they are en-couraged to contact the Pasa-dena Police Department at (626) 744-4241.

As Mayors and City Council Members, we find it hard to believe that Governor Brown and the California State Leg-islature actually voted to eliminate Redevelopment Agencies from the State of California in spite of clear facts that Redevelopment abates blighting influences and brings positive eco-nomic development ben-efits to our cities and the state. It is particularly dis-turbing that the Legislature

would ignore the fact that less than a year ago the citizens of California voted overwhelming for Prop 22 – an initiative designed to protect local government funding and specifically, Redevelopment.

The sad fact is that they did approve the elimi-nation Redevelopment; but not all State Legislators turned their back on the people they represent.

We are proud to stand next to and thank Senator Bob Huff, Assembly Mem-ber Tim Donnelly and es-pecially the only democrat to oppose the bill, Assem-bly Member Anthony Por-tantino.

Taking principled stands that are not politi-

cally expedient is not easy. Representation that is meaningful and preserves local government serves all Californians and we are grateful to be represented by such fine public ser-vants. Thank you Senator Bob Huff, Assembymem-bers Tim Donnelly and Anthony Portantino!

The literacy nonprofit, Monrovia Reads held it’s (hopefully) First Annual Chili Bowl on Saturday, July 16. The event was hosted by Eric and Terri Moziloand and Ju-lie Gentile Soldo and her hus-band Tony Soldo hired a trio of musicians, The Delgado Brothers, which provided the music for the evening event.

Of course part of the entertainment at the event was the Chili Cook-off itself. There were 10 contestants. Participant included Nancy Bond, Fire Chief Chris Don-ovan, Dunia Hamden, Phil Lujan, Julie Gentile Soldo, and Karen Straley-Taylor. A

tie for 3rd place went to Dave Scarminach and Christy Lar-son who titled her Chili “Bris-ket in the Rye” as a tribute to literacy and J.D. Salinger. Second place honors were garnered by Donna Baker with the win going to City Councilman Tom Adams.

This was not a people’s choice award, but rather the rating was done by a distin-guished panel of local res-taurateurs. The judges who included Rudy Castrellon of Rudy’s, Dave Rivanis of Market Grill, and Dustin Nicholarsen of Cafe Opera and The Derby, took their responsibility very seriously.

They critiqued the chili com-binations in a blind taste test and made notes and com-ments on the quality of the meat, the flavors and texture of the various recipes. In the end the voting was close and the winners were all those in attendance who were al-lowed to taste right along with the judges.

The menu was not lim-ited to Chili alone. Jake’s Roadhouse catered with des-sert coming in the form of ice cream from King Kone. Good friends, good music and good food all for a good cause, it was a great event.

Monrovia Reads Holds Chili Cook-off

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ron Ellington Shy got this summer’s Friday Night Live, presented by the Sierra Madre Cham-ber of Commerce, off to

a rockin’ start, with an appreciative crowd spend-ing much of the evening in Sierra Madre’s Kerst-ing Court watching Shy perform songs by Otis Redding, Dobie Gray, and many others. In fact, from the Chamber’s perspec-tive, the music may have been a little too good.

Friday Night Live is an annual Sierra Madre event in which the Cham-

ber of Commerce invites folks from all over to come enjoy music in the town “square”, dine in local res-taurants, and shop in the village stores. Shoppers who spend $35 in a retail store or $50 in a restaurant can then bring their receipt to the Chamber booth to be entered in a drawing to be held the final night of Friday Night Live, August 26th. There he stood, right in the middle of the street. He was nonchalantly smoking his cigarette and talking on his cellular phone. I mean RIGHT in the middle, be-

tween the north bound and south bound traffic. At a major intersection yet. There was no divide, just a yellow line.

The south bound were sitting still but the easterly moving were now turning north, right in front of him. He didn’t flinch, just took another drag of his cigarette between words.

Some of the drivers pan-icked when they turned and suddenly saw him standing there. They hit brakes. Their own screeched, the sound added upon by those behind.

He waved them on, never looking up. The driv-

ers waved too as they maneu-vered around him. Theirs were not friendly waves.

The light changed. He casually strolled across the remaining half of the street. The phone never left his ear. The cigarete did leave his lips. He flipped it in front of my car.

My green light came on and I started forward. I was sure his cigarette was going to lodge in my tire tread. It would then flip up against my gas tank. There would be a terrible explosion and I would be in little pieces, scat-tered all over the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Du-

arte Road.I glanced to my left to

see if the car in the next lane was close enough to be affect-ed by the explosion. It was starting forward right with me. The driver was stretched up to the rear view mirror ap-plying her lipstick. Her car was moving into my lane. I realized I might not live to explode. I beeped my horn. She smiled and waved at me.

I made it through the intersection. I must have missed he smoldering ciga-rette. I didn’t explode. I didn’t relax either. Keeping an alert eye peeled, I noticed an elderly lady waiting in her

vintage Lincoln to exit the parking lot of the old Hub Center. She was hesitant. She needed time and space.

A young lady, make that a young woman, was waiting behind her. She was in a ter-rible hurry. Her little red Pre-lude shot around the hesitant Lincoln and ripped in front of me.

Instinct took my foot to the brake and my eyes to the rear view mirror. What did I see? An approaching 4x4 sports vehicle. The driver was smiling and talking on his cellular........

I recently went to visit a dear friend in Temecula for the day. In discussing what we should do while there, wineries came to mind first as well as a visit to Old Town Temecula.

We started the day in Old Town. Walking through the quaint city it brought the feeling of be-ing in the old west, with the wooden walkways creaking as we moved along. We ventured into Temecula Olive Oil Com-pany. Surprisingly, that was where our tasting would begin. We mozied on over to the “bar” where we were served a variety of family made olive oils and balsamics. My favorite had to be the Citrus Reserve, who would have thought blood oranges tasted so good combined with olive oil?

As we walked around historic Old Town, The Old Town Sweet Shop and Old Town Rootbeer Company were definitely first on our list. These are a must for anyone visiting the city.

Once we finished in Old Town we made our way to our final destination - Ponte Family Estate and Winery. As we pulled in the driveway of the barn style Tasting Room, we im-mediately knew we were in the country, wine country!

Our tour of the winery and grounds started, natu-rally, with a glass of their Moscato in hand. Our friendly guide Ty showed us all that the winery had to offer. The tour felt more

like we were catching up with an old friend. We mo-mentarily forgot it was a business. We explored the winemaking process and even tasted a Port wine straight from the oak bar-rels in their Mission style Barrel Room.

Ponte Vineyards are among the oldest and larg-est in the Temecula Wine Country. Claudio Ponte has owned the 310-acre vineyards since 1984. The vineyards include single named grape varieties such as Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc. I’ll be honest I am more of a white wine and sweet wine drinker. Once in the tast-ing room, Ty introduced as to their most popular hand crafted wine called Beverino. It’s a sweet boy-senberry and black rasp-berry infused red wine that I am officially hooked on, you have try it!

Shhh ….. we had a sneak peak at what the ac-commodations will look like when their two-story, sixty-room boutique ho-tel, Ponte Vineyard Inn, is completed in April of 2012. These modern yet homey feeling rooms will be the perfect relaxation place after a fun filled day enjoying the winery. The hotel will be complete with a garden which leads to a pond.

We ended our day at the all-outdoor restaurant featuring casual Califor-nian cusine with an Italian influence. The Restaurant at Ponte where Chef Vin-

cent Logan has created an amazing menu was del-izioso. I am a huge bread person and their rosemary bread with scallion olive oil was out of this world. I experienced the roasted half chicken with pan jus along with fried basmati rice and Temecula sum-mer vegetables.My friend, Dianna , enjoyed a grilled pork tenderloin with a port cherry ginger sauce com-plete with truffle mashed potatoes and summer vegetables. These dishes gave savory a whole new meaning. It is no wonder they are an award winning venue.

The Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) had the double pleasure of honoring members of Fanny Kuo and Joanna Liang by presenting each with the 2011 Woman of Achieve-ment Award at a recent lun-cheon meeting. This award is given annually to a woman who exemplifies the AAUW purpose of promoting equity and education for women and girls.

Kuo and Liang, both Arcadia residents, have in-deed furthered the cause of women in education during their years as co-vice presi-dents in charge of AAUW’s Educational Foundation, which supports women in graduate studies, public ser-vice projects and research. For the past three years, the fund-raising efforts of Kuo and Liang have resulted in cultural events that have de-lighted their fellow AAUW members and guests and enabled Arcadia AAUW to contribute generously to the Educational Foundation.

Fanny Kuo was gradu-ated from Tong-Hai in Tai-

wan with a BA degree in Chi-nese literature. She also has a background in music and is a classically trained soprano. In Taiwan, she assisted in the music department of an arts academy. In the Arcadia community, she helps with the English Conversation class that is co-sponsored by Arcadia AAUW and the Ar-cadia Library. As a member of the Temple City United Methodist Church, she is assistant choir director and piano accompanist. Kuo’s solo voice has graced many occasions.

Joanna Liang received a BA in Chinese literature from Taiwan’s Tamking Universi-ty. In Taiwan, she worked as an elementary school teach-er. Currently, she is a mem-ber of the Arcadia Assistance League and the Arcadia His-torical Museum. Active in the Arcadia Chinese Association (ACA), she has served the organization in many capaci-ties. Liang is head registrar on the English Conversation class at Arcadia Library. Li-ang’s travels include African countries, which are of spe-cial interest to her.

It was a great party! Good food, entertainment, line dancing and a full house. Dan Belling (supervisor) in-troduced Mayor Gary Ko-vacic who welcomed guests and gave the following his-tory:

“On this date, 20 years ago, the City of Arcadia opened the doors to this beautiful facility.

A senior citizens com-mission was established in 1978 to serve as a liaison be-tween the senior citizen com-munity and the City Council and to investigate the possi-bility to build a Community Center.

In 1988, the City Coun-cil decided to build a center and construction began on this facility in 1990 and the 18,800 square foot commu-nity center and adjoining rec-reation department office was constructed in a little more than a year.

On July 19, 1991, city officials and approximately 400 members of the commu-nity gathered for the opening dedication of the Arcadia Community Center to dedi-

cate the $4.5 million structure that would house the city’s senior citizen and recreation-al programs and services.

The Arcadia Communi-ty Center has become a focal point for hundreds of senior citizens, enriching their lives by entertaining them, teach-ing them, dispelling loneli-ness and providing a great environment for making new friends.

In addition, the Com-munity Center has become a great resource for youth and families as a multitude of lifelong learning and health and wellness courses are of-fered to meet the education-al, physical and emotional needs of the population.”

City Council members and department heads were in attendance. It was nice to see retired directors Roberta White and Jerry Collins, also Betty Harris, who goes back before the Center to service for seniors at City Hall. Sara Somogy is Director.

Congratulations to all those in the past and present who make this marvelous fa-cility possible.

on a ballistic vest and hel-met, and climb inside a police vehicle capable of handling .50 calibre bullet fire. The vehicle was part of Foothill Special En-forcement Team, a region-al tactical special weapons team founded in 2005 to assist in making locations secure.

According to Mon-rovia Police Lieutenant and Assistant Team Com-mander Nels Ortlund, who has been on the team since its creation, the team has “Never taken a life,” nor have they shot anybody. They also have never had a team mem-ber shot or injured. FSET trains every two weeks, and goes on approximate-ly 12 missions / year, 80 percent of which are high risk search warrant mis-sions.

Residents also were able to obtain free child ID cards with their chil-dren’s fingerprints by insurance company New York Life.

Monrovia resident Donna Espinosa felt that getting the ID card was important “for safety,” and had her daughter Hana Tucker fingerprinted by New York Life Agent Mark Wurtumberg.

As well as the finger-printing program, Monro-via PD also had a booth encouraging drivers to work for community safe-ty.

“[We’re] trying to get people to slow down in residential areas,” said Monrovia Police Officer John Meeks, as he hand-ed out signs for residents to display in their front yards for 60 days, remind-ing drivers not to go faster than 25 mph.

Monrovia Police also had a DARE table, de-spite no longer being able to provide a DARE officer to local schools due to the financial constraints, ac-cording to an officer who wished to remain anony-mous. Current officers cannot just volunteer time to the DARE program, in order for DARE to start

up again there would have to be a full time employed DARE officer, and finan-cially the Police Depart-ment cannot currently provide that.

As well as seasoned officers, there were also volunteer explorers at the event. Two such explor-ers were 16-year-old D. Ramos and 17-year-old CJ Garett. Garett, a lifelong Monrovia resident has been an explorer for two years and plans to join the police force when he is old enough.

‘This is my first time doing [National Night Out]” Garett said, “It’s a nice little set up.”

This year’s National Night Out brought out a crowd of all ages, and was a community step towards raising awareness, becom-ing involved, and prevent-ing crime through educa-tion. Why they call it “sitting-in” probably harks back to the big band era where many musicians sat while playing their instruments. However, the only musician sitting down Wednesday night was drummer Mike Dubin, and he wasn’t ex-actly taking it easy. This is tough work!

Skip Heller, Wyatt Stone, and Mike Dubin are amazing musicians individ-ually as well as collectively. But when a Blaster walked into the Novel Café last Wednesday night to “sit in”, the energy soared into the record books.

Phil Alvin, from the Blasters, casually walked into the popular Novel Café with his guitar, sat down for a couple of minutes and got up and played some incred-ible songs that literally mes-merized the audience for several numbers.

While growing up in the working-class Los An-geles suburb of Downey,

Calif., the Alvin brothers snuck off to blues and coun-try nightclubs, catching art-ists like Willie Dixon and T-Bone Walker, befriending Big Joe Turner, and educat-ing themselves in the tradi-tions that their band, the Blasters, would pay hom-age to on their 1980 debut album, American Music.

With Phil singing and Dave handling guitar and songwriting, the Blasters came roaring out of the L.A. punk scene with au-thentic rock ‘n roll.

It’s not uncommon to see some really big names just pop in for a set or even just one song.

Mike Dubin, for ex-ample, who has been sitting in on his beautiful vintage Leedy snare drum just re-leased a cool CD named City Stops with Holly Kane. This is a major story in it-self; we’ll get to that a later date.

Sometimes the best man for the job is a goat. Or a herd of goats, especially when the job is clearing dry brush from steep hillsides.

City of Duarte officials have once again contracted with Ranchito Tivo Boer Goats to clear two areas of the Duarte foothills identified by the City’s field services department in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Depart-ment of Agriculture staff. From now until mid-August, the herd of goats will be munching their way through dry brush and vegetation at the top of Greenbank, east of Briar Summit, and on the hill-side surrounding the Duarte “D” at the top of Westvale north and west of the Duarte Mesa area. Duarte will pay Ranchito Tivo Boer Goats $12,200, plus all the rubble the goats can eat.

“Our goal is to stop the spread and reduce the over-all amount of brush in and around homes adjacent to the open space areas of our

community,” said City Man-ager Darrell George. Com-plete removal of brush, which could lead to soil erosion, is not a goal of the project, he said. We’ve hired the goats several times before and they do a great job. Prior to enlist-ing the aid of goats the City relied on mechanical means of clearance to maintain fire breaks.

Ranchito Tivo Boer Goats is part of the Los Ange-les County Fire Department approved goat vendor list, and has worked with the cit-ies of Monrovia, Chino Hills, San Diego, and the Chino Basin Water Conservation District.

The utilization of goats is a non-polluting method of brush clearance, considered to achieve better results than mechanical means. Electri-fied fencing keeps the goats within the designated bound-aries. Goats are typically quiet, odor-free, resistant to poison oak, and emit a small, pellet-shaped biodegradable waste material that naturally

breaks down into the soil. Goats also make better eco-nomic sense than utilizing mechanical means which are more costly.

think we were big Beatle fans. I’ll never darken to doors of Charlie O’s when in NYC. Sorry Dad, this is one thing we cannot forgive.

That famous black and white footage of the Beatles running to the stage at Shea Stadium with thousands of screaming teenage girls will always haunt me...we COULD have been there, we WOULD have met the lads from Liverpool. A chance of a lifetime, lost in a New York City speakeasy.

So on Friday night last, it was Deja Vu all over again. Screaming girls, four lads who looked like they came back in time from Liverpool

circa 1965, and a perfect night for reminiscing about what should have been.

Yes, the Beatles (aka the Fab Four) were on stage and in top gear for an incredible couple of hours of the great-est songs ever recorded. It wasn’t Shea Stadium but the next best thing, Pasadena Civic outdoor venue on a balmy summer evening.

The people in the “cheap seats” who clapped their hands outside the paid perimeter seemed to enjoy the music as much as those who rattled their jewelry as they applauded John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Starting off with the

mop-top early days, the lads sang some of the very best of the very best Beatles songs with such emotion and style that if you closed your eyes, you really could have been at Shea Stadium. The screams, luckily, weren’t as loud as to drown out the lads but they were nonetheless enthusiastic about seeing history relived in such a talented quartet.

As the time pressed on, the lads would don different outfits depicting the era of the songs they were about to play. The most dramatic

was when Sgt. Peppers was played. The colorful cos-tumes of that famous album

were spot on and a power-ful rendition of the Album’s namesake song blasted Pasa-dena’s rock and roll roof sky high.

The audience was a good mix of all ages prov-ing that the Beatles were still the number one band in the world even though they have not played live since 1971 and considering John and George are no longer with us.

Some of the younger audience members were asked what they thought af-

ter the show: “Wonderfully entertaining. The best Beatles cover band you’ll ever see.”

– said local musician and guitar afficianado Devin Stan-nard.

combined with dedicated live musicians and hit after hit everyone can sing along to.” said Stephanie Lopez, who travelled over an hour in Friday night traffic to see the lads.

I, for one, couldn’t have asked for a better show. These guys are terrific and talented in their own right but when they become the Beatles, they are off on a

Mayor John Buchanan stated, “The informational piece requested in this settle-ment is information that we provided in the past, and we agreed to provide it again be-cause it will assist residents in making informed decisions. We would have agreed to do this without a lawsuit. Al-though I believe there was no basis for this lawsuit, this reso-lution ends the matter at no cost to residents.”

The Sierra Madre Week-ly contacted Sierra Madre City Manager, Elaine Aguilar for comment on the case.

Ms. Aguilar did offer an addition to Mayor Buchan-an’s quote in the city issued Press Release, “Continuing down the path of litigation would have not only cost both parties additional fees, but

would have also diverted City staff from being able to con-centrate on current projects and programs; now that this matter is settled, we can get onto other pressing matters.”

Crawford writes this explanation on his blog Monday: “My lawsuit was in-tended to shine a light on the City’s allegedly illegal con-duct in violating Proposition 218. If the extensive coverage of the lawsuit in the local news-papers, newspapers through-out California, along with this blog is any guide, I was very successful. “He also adds….

“Most importantly, my purposes in litigating were to force a recalcitrant City to comply with Proposition 218’s notice requirements and to ensure that low income families receive a discount for the water they consume.”

What Crawford actu-ally said in the suit in item

#32 (PDF available on our website) is this: …”.the Notice stated that a discount was available for “low income?” The Notice did not contain, however, a definition of the term “low income,” or state the maximum amounts and individual or family could earn and still qualify for such a discount.”

In Section IV, item 17 of Crawford’s suit proclaimed “Petitioner is aggrieved party and is beneficially interested in both the outcome of this liti-gation and the relief requested because he is injured by the City’s adoption of the Ordi-nance on Jan 11, 2011.”

In Crawford’s suit; Arti-cle 1, paragraph 1. Stated that “This case arises out of the City Council of Sierra Mad-fre’s adoption of ordinance 1312 on January 11, 2011 significantly increasing water costumers’ (SIC) water rates.

Attempts to get a com-ment on the lawsuit dismissal from John Crawford were unsuccessful. However, he did respond with this rather cutting remark in an email received at 8:35 PM Monday:

“Thank you for the op-portunity, Terry. I have de-cided that I will answer your question on my site. I want people to have the opportu-nity to see the answer.”

We edited another ma-levolent comment in his email which bore no relevance to the issue.

Then, yesterday morn-ing Crawford posted these responses to my question on his blog:

“It was not dismissed, Terry. Rather it was pulled by myself and my Attorney because the City Council agreed to mend the error of their ways and not lie to the residents any more in order to

get their money.” Crawford went on to say:“Well Terry, if you think

running a bait and switch operation designed to cozen cash out of ratepayers who at that particular time might have actually trusted their city isn’t a bad thing, then perhaps you don’t really give a damn for those who your paper claims to speak for. Maybe you re-ally are just a City Hall apple polisher who only sees to their needs, and not those of the people.”

According to city offi-cials, the City of Sierra Madre has agreed to nothing in the “settlement”, no money was awarded and the city has said it would send documents to water customers that it had already prepared, regardless of the Crawford/Zimmerman suit.

The lawsuit alleged the city “circumvented both the

letter and spirit of California’s Proposition 218.”

The Sierra Madre City Council, following months of debate, approved a rate hike of roughly 7.5 percent a year for four years, with slightly larger increases for those who consume more water. The last water rate hike went into effect in 2006.

Methodist Hospital an-nounced today the appoint-ment of Arizona health care executive Dan F. Ausman as president and chief executive officer. Ausman is scheduled to begin August 29.

“Dan’s appointment as president and CEO of Meth-odist Hospital assures that the mission and values of Meth-odist Hospital will continue. He is an extremely talented leader with exceptional cre-dentials and experience,” said Michael Hoover, chair-man of the hospital’s board of directors. “Under Dan’s leadership, we can be certain that Methodist Hospital will continue to focus on excep-tional patient experiences and meeting the needs of our community. I am excited to welcome Dan and to have his leadership for The Next Generation of Care.”

Current CEO Dennis Lee announced his retire-ment plans earlier this year.

Ausman was previously with Abrazo Health Care in Phoenix, Ariz., where he was president from 2006 un-

til 2011. The second largest health care system in Arizo-na, Abrazo has net revenues of $1.5 billion, with 5,000 em-ployees, 3,000 affiliated physi-cians, six acute-care hospitals totaling 1,060 beds and two health plans.

“I am excited to be join-ing Methodist Hospital as its new president and CEO and look forward to building upon the great history and culture of this excellent orga-nization,” Ausman said.

According to a 2008 Phoenix Business Journal ar-ticle, Ausman defines success as “patient safety and clinical outcomes.” He believes an ef-fective business leader shows passion, honesty and vision. And he says his most effec-tive communication skill is “the ability to articulate vision and inspire.”

That certainly seems to have worked for him in his last position. In the last four fiscal years with Ausman at the helm, Abrazo negoti-ated strategic alliances with three large medical groups, improved employee, physi-cian and patient satisfaction, and significantly reduced the nurse turnover rate.

Under Ausman’s ad-ministration, Abrazo’s hos-pitals achieved satisfaction scores, as measured by Press Ganey, above 80 percent for inpatient, 90 percent for out-patient and 80 percent for emergency room.

Before assuming the top post at Abrazo, Ausman served as vice president of operations and president of California operations for Vanguard Health System,

Abrazo’s parent company. In that role, Ausman man-aged three acute care hospi-tals, with 491 beds in Irvine, Calif.

He served as president and CEO for Irvine Re-gional Hospital and Medi-cal Center, a 176-bed facility owned by Tenet Healthcare. He also has held positions as CEO for Monterey Park Hospital in Monterey Park; executive vice president for Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles; and CEO for Women’s Medical Center in Seminole, Fla.

Ausman received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Califor-nia, Irvine, and master’s in public administration from the University of Southern California’s Health Services Administration graduate pro-gram. He has more than 30 years of healthcare adminis-tration experience focusing on strategic development, financial success, cultural awareness and change, and quality of care. In 1998 and again in 2002, Ausman was awarded the Tenet Circle of Excellence Award by Tenet Healthcare and was recog-nized for performing at high levels in the areas of quality, service and operations.

He has served on the board of directors for the Phoenix chapter of the American Heart Association, along with the Arizona Hos-pital and Healthcare Associa-tion. He also was an honor-ary board member for The Wellness Community.

Ausman has two adult sons who live in San Diego. He and his wife, Carolyn, will relocate from Arizona to Southern California.

During the past month Si-erra Madre Search and Rescue (SMSR) responded to nine calls for assistance.

Fallen Hiker, Chantry Flat: The Team was called to Chantry Flat to aid a hiker who had fallen in an off-trail location. SMSR members responded to the site with a backpack-sized medical kit and determined the patient had fallen from a cliff ap-proximately 40 feet high, suffer-ing extensive injuries. EMT-cer-tified Team members treated and stabilized the patient, who was evacuated via litter wheel-out to an ambulance at Chantry Flat.

Overdue Hiker: Montrose Search and Rescue notified SMSR that it was searching for an overdue hiker who was believed to be heading toward Sierra Madre. The Team launched a comprehensive search of area trails, sending several crews into the field on foot and in vehicles. An SMSR crew located the subject in good condition and escorted them

to family members waiting at Chantry Flat.

Heat Exhaustion, Big Santa Anita Canyon: SMSR re-sponded to a report of a hiker in distress near Hoegee’s Camp in Big Santa Anita Canyon. The hiker was determined to be suf-fering from heat-related illness and was treated by paramed-ics from the Sierra Madre Fire Department, and EMT-certified Search and Rescue Team members. The patient was then evacuated to an ambulance waiting at Chantry Flat.

Environmental exposure is a common cause of emer-gencies in the backcountry. In Southern California at this time of year, hikers, bikers, runners, and others who enjoy the local mountains are particularly at risk for heat-related illness. This can be as mild as heat cramps--painful muscle spasms--or as serious as heat stroke, which is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate interven-tion.

Tommy Ingulfsen, Chair-man of SMSR’s Medical Committee, says: “The chance of developing a heat-related illness may be aggravated by pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, kidney disease and obesity, as well as the use of alcohol and drugs.” Infants and

the elderly are particularly at risk since their ability to regulate body temperature is reduced.

Ingulfsen adds: “In hot weather it is a good idea to keep outdoor activity to a moderate level and stay in the shade as much as possible. Also make sure to stay well hydrated.” In-gulfsen advises that in addition to drinking water, sports drinks that contain sodium are good for replacing electrolytes.

Some common symp-toms of heat-related illness include headache, lighthead-edness, cramps, dizziness and vomiting. “If you or a friend develop any of these signs,” says Ingulfsen, “cease activity, find a cool place to rest and consider calling for help.”

The Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team is an all-vol-unteer, non-profit organization that has been serving the local community for 60 years. SMSR is funded entirely by donations and never charges for any of its services. The Team provides a range of public programs on wilderness safety in addition to its search and rescue activities.

The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.Sunday, July 24:Between July 23rd at 4:00 p.m. and July 24th at 12:00 p.m., an auto burglary oc-curred in the 200 block of West Huntington Drive. The suspect(s) forced open the rear window and stole a speaker box, a CD player, an amplifier, an equalizer and a CD case containing approxi-mately 400 CD’s.At about 6:25 p.m., loss prevention personnel from JC Penney at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, detained a juvenile for theft. The suspect took merchandise into a fit-ting room, concealed it, and walked out of the store with-out paying. The 15-year-old Asian female was arrested for theft.Monday, July 25:Between 1:00 a.m. and 12:00

p.m., an auto theft occurred in the 1200 block of South Baldwin Avenue. Suspect(s) stole a 2010 Acura TL, grey, 4-door from the parking lot of the location.Between July 23rd at 4:30 p.m. and July 24th at 7:45 a.m., a commercial bur-glary occurred in the 1100 block of South First Avenue. Suspect(s) cut the lock of a se-curity gate that surrounds the residence under construction. The suspect(s) stole tools, a faucet and a crystal chande-lier.Tuesday, July 26:At about 4:49 a.m., a residen-tial burglary occurred in the 100 block of Diamond Street. The resident awoke to male suspect in her bedroom. He grabbed a purse located at the foot of the bed and fled. The suspect was described as a White male, 5’10”, wearing a white t-shirt and basketball type shorts. The suspect had entered through an unlocked door.Between July 21st at 5:30 p.m. and July 25th at 6:00 a.m., a grand theft occurred at the Los Angeles County Depart-ment of Weights and Mea-sures, 12300 Lower Azusa Road. Unknown suspect(s)

removed a dedication plaque that was located on the outer wall of the building. Wednesday, July 27:At about 12:21 p.m., officers responded to the 1100 block of Oakwood Drive regarding an audible alarm activation. Two male suspects were seen leaving and entering a vehicle described as a 4-door, late model black Lexus sedan with dark tinted windows. There were conflicting sus-pect descriptions from wit-nesses. Investigation found the rear door pried open, but no loss was reported.At about 11:00 p.m., units were dispatched to the 600 block of West Walnut regard-ing an attempted residential burglary. The resident awoke to the sound of someone at-tempting to open the front door, then the side entrance. When the resident turned on the porch light he saw a White male, between the ages of 20-30, 5’-10” and 150 lbs. responded to Dana’s House-keeping, 500 North First Av-enue, regarding a robbery that had just occurred. A male suspect entered the busi-ness and told the victim he had a gun, demanding cash and checks from the business. The victim cooperated, hand-ing over the loss. The suspect fled on foot. The suspect is described as a male, African American, 30-years-old, 5’-06”, 140 pounds, short black hair, wearing a blue and white plaid shirt, sunglasses, and a “floppy” brim straw hat.At about 11:45 p.m., July 27th, a 53-year-old male White vic-tim was standing to the front of an open business in the 00 block of East Huntington Drive. The victim saw a sil-ver Honda, 2-door, with tint-ed windows, drive slowly by along Huntington Drive. The victim heard a noise come from the vehicle and was then struck by a pellet or B-B pro-jectile in his elbow, causing a laceration. The suspect(s) fled in the vehicle. The victim did not seek medical aid.Friday, July 29:Between 9:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., an auto burglary oc-curred in the 500 block of East Live Oak Avenue. Suspect(s) smashed the front and rear passenger side win-dows, damaged the driver’s side lock, and ransacked the glove compartment. No loss was reported.Between July 28th at 8:00 p.m. and July 29th at 5:45a.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 0 block of Christina Street. The suspect(s) gained access to a detached garage as well as three separate storage cabinets. The suspect(s) stole tools and other unknown property.Saturday, July 30:At about 11:36 p.m., a traf-fic stop was conducted in the area of First Avenue and Huntington Drive on a vehi-cle that had been reported as suspicious earlier in the eve-ning. A record check of the driver, a 43-year-old Hispanic male, revealed a suspended driver’s license and a warrant for his arrest. During a search of the vehicle, officers found tools commonly associated with the crime of burglary. Officers also found evidence linking the suspect to a report-ed auto theft in a neighboring city. The suspect was arrested for suspicion of commercial burglary and additional mis-demeanor charges.At approximately 11:45 p.m., units were dispatched to the 800 block of South Third

Avenue regarding a pos-sible residential burglary in progress. A resident at the location went to check the garage because he thought someone was inside. When the resident, opened the door he found a White male stand-ing next to his car with the door open. The suspect had removed a cell phone and garage door opener from the car. When confronted, the suspect fled on foot. A sus-pect that matched the descrip-tion was located and detained at First Avenue and Duarte Road. The 18-year-old White male suspect had in his pos-session the stolen property from the victim’s vehicle and was placed under arrest for Residential Burglary.

Monrovia PDHot ProwlOn July 22 at 1:20 a.m., a resident in the 800 block of East Lemon was sleeping in the living room when she heard her small dog growl-ing at something outside. She went to investigate and saw a male subject wear-ing dark colored clothing crawling through her bed-room window. The suspect saw the resident and fled. Officers conducted an area search, but were unable to locate the suspect. The in-vestigation is continuing.Receiving Stolen Mail / Parole Violation - Sus-pect ArrestedOn July 22 at 9:17 a.m., an officer was patrolling the 800 block of West Walnut due to recent complaints of drug activity. He observed two subjects walking down the street carrying a duffle bag. When he stopped and talked with the subjects, he learned one of them was on parole for burglary. A search of the duffle bag revealed stolen mail from several residences off Roy-al Oaks. The suspect was arrested for possession of stolen mail and a parole violation.Armed Robbery - Sus-pects ArrestedOn July 24 at 4:00 p.m., of-ficers were dispatched to a motel in the 900 block of West Huntington. A male victim reported that a male occupant staying in a room at the motel had just robbed him of all his property at knife point. The victim went to the mo-tel to trade items he found in the trash for marijuana. The suspect did not want what he was trading and decided to take everything he had, including his back-

pack and iPod. The suspect was identified and arrested without incident. The sto-len property was located and returned to its owner. A female subject inside the room was also arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance, as well as another male subject who had rented the room. A stolen bicycle was found in the second male subject’s vehicle, so he was also charged with posses-sion of stolen property. Wanted Robbery Sus-pect ArrestedArcadia Police Department recently circulated a special bulletin regarding a wanted robbery suspect from their city. On July 24 at 10:43 p.m., a Monrovia of-ficer, who is familiar with the s u s -pect

f r o m prior con- t a c t s , drove by an area where the suspect was known to fre-quent. The officer saw the suspect walking near Fifth and Olive with another male subject. The suspect tried to conceal himself behind a bush, but was de-tained without incident. Ar-cadia officers arrived and took custody of the suspect.Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance / Pos-session of Burglary Tools - Suspect ArrestedOn July 25 at 4:00 a.m., an officer saw a suspicious per-son in the area of Foothill and Canyon. The officer contacted the male subject and determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance. Upon further investigation, the of-ficer found the suspect had a flashlight, screwdriver, and box cutter in his pos-session. The suspect did not have a reasonable ex-planation for having these tools or for being in Mon-rovia. The suspect was ar-rested for being under the

influence and possession of burglary tools.Driving Under the In-fluence / Hit and Run Traffic Collision - Sus-pect ArrestedOn July 25 at 2:34 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of South Peck, where a vehicle col-lided into four parked cars. The suspect’s vehicle lost one of its wheels, but the suspect continued south on Peck into the City of El Monte on three wheels and an axle. A witness followed the driver and led officers to the suspect. He was de-tained and officers deter-mined he had been driving

e n c e of alcohol. He was arrested and taken into custody.BatteryOn July 25 at 6:23 p.m., police re-

ceived a report of a battery that just oc-

curred in the area of California and Walnut.

The reporting party stated a male subject had exited a truck and was seen hitting a female, then dragging her into the bushes. Offi-cers checked the area, but were unable to locate any-one. The reporting party called again and stated he had been incorrect in the location, and that it was Canyon and Walnut. Of-ficers returned and located a trail of blood from Wal-nut to Maple. After an ex-tensive investigation, it was determined an altercation had occurred between a teenage boyfriend and girl-friend, and the female may have hit the male in the nose, causing him to bleed. Officers were unable to de-termine exactly what trans-pired, as the two juveniles were uncooperative and had no visible signs of in-jury.Battery TheftsOn July 26, three curbside box battery thefts were reported. The suspect(s) pried open the box doors and stole several back-up power batteries that are used in case of power out-

ages. The thefts occurred in the 1300 block South Magnolia, the 500 block of Bradbury, and the 1000 block of Royal Oaks. No suspects have been located. Time Warner Cable report-ed that a few nights ago, the City of Pomona had approximately 60 of these boxes broken into in one night. The same thefts are also occurring in Arcadia and South Pasadena. Inves-tigation continuing.Residential BurglaryOn July 26 at 10:00 p.m., a subject who was house-sitting in the 100 block of North Madison arrived at the home and found the front door ajar. The point of entry into the home was a kitchen window; no forced entry was apparent. The house appeared to be thoroughly ransacked and the actual loss is unknown, since the owners are away. The loss will be determined when the owners return. In-vestigation continuing.Possible Drug ActivityOn July 27 at 12:11 a.m., a caller reported a male sub-ject standing near a blue van in the 900 block of West Walnut that appeared to be smoking marijuana. The caller stated they did not think the person be-longed in the area. When the officer arrived, the suspect fled. As he ran, he placed his hands in his sweatshirt. The officer called out commands for the suspect to remove his hands, but the suspect kept running and was able to get into a construction storage yard at the 210 Freeway and Fifth. Containment of the area was set up and the Foothill Air Support Team helicopter assisted in the search. The suspect was not found. He is believed to be associated with a lo-cal residence in the area. A methamphetamine pipe was found in the area.

The suspect(s) stole a Beret-ta 92FS (9mm) with a fully loaded magazine, U.S.A. Passport, American Ex-press credit card, Macy’s credit card, Well’s Fargo ATM card, Well’s Fargo Visa card, Costco card, Los Angeles Police Dept. Credit Union card, Well’s Fargo check book, Chase check book, Leatherman tool, Spider company knife, handcuffs, Califor-nia driver’s license, small black gun bag, gym bag with clothes and an IPod. 9:41 AM- Attempted Resi-dential Burglary, 500 blk. W. Highland Ave. Un-known suspect(s) rang the front door bell in the vic-tim’s house and tore the kitchen window screen to gain entry into the house. The victim yelled at the suspect, causing him to flee up the driveway into a sil-ver 4 door car with a rear spoiler. The suspect(s) left in an unknown direction. 4:48 PM- Use Another’s Personal Identification to Obtain Credit/Etc. This incident involves unknown suspect(s) making fraudu-lent charges to the victim’s debit card at a Union 76 gas station in Fontana. To-tal loss value is $160.53.5:06 PM- Petty Theft, 100 blk. Adams St. Unknown suspect(s) entered an un-locked parked car between the evening of July 25th and the morning of July 26th. The suspect(s) stole a Verizon LG cellular tele-phone. Thursday, July 28th:4:18 PM- Threatening/Re-sisting Executive Officer, Pos-session of Heroin, 100 blk. W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Two of-ficers responded to a possible intoxicated man slumped over on the curb. Officers spoke to the suspect and de-termined that he was under the influence of an opiate. Officers found marijuana and narcotics paraphernalia in his daypack, and learned from the dispatcher that he had three outstanding arrest war-rants. The suspect became uncooperative and began to fight with officers, who repeat-edly commanded him to stop resisting arrest. During the fight the suspect bit one of the officers on the hand, and dropped a balloon containing tar heroin. The officers were eventually able to restrain the suspect and take him into custody. The suspect was 25 years old, and from Altadena. He was booked on multiple charges at the Pasadena jail.
