Testing - Comprehensive Accountability

Comprehensive accountability means that we have

to assess students learning to make sure we have ef-

fective programs and practices. This spring students

will be taking the SBAC test. The Smarter Balanced

approach includes a number of differences from most

state assessments today. These assessments will be

administered online and will go beyond multiple

choice questions to include performance tasks that

allow students to demonstrate research, writing, and

analytical skills. Accommodations for students with

disabilities and English language learners will be built

into the system so that the progress of students can

be accurately measured. An online reporting system

will provide clear, easy-to-understand data on student

achievement and growth. These reports will present

parents, teachers, principals, and other local and state

leaders with information they can use to help students

make even greater progress. Assessments and tests we

administer in elementary school include:

Kinder Basic skills test- includes alphabet recognition, num-

ber recognition counting, sight words test

Math benchmarks

Writing Proficiency- Three times a year

First grade & Second Grade Dynamic Indicators Of Basic Early Literacy Skills

(DIBELS)

Mathematics benchmarks- Three times a year

English Language Arts benchmarks– 3 times a year

Writing Proficiency- Three times a year

3rd -5th grades STAR Renaissance Learning reading Test Mathe-

matics benchmarks

English Language Arts benchmarks

Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium Test

(SBAC test)

Bilingual classes and students in US less tan 12 mos.

Students also take teacher developed tests in spelling,

reading, writing and mathematics. In Santa Ana, we give

a variety of assessments to students at all levels in order

to monitor student progress as well as to ensure program

effectiveness.

April begins State Testing

All students in grades 3rd - 5th California take the SBAC assessment. Students with IEPs

(Individualized Education Plans) may take the CALMAPS or the CAPA test.

Ms. Villamar is our Employee of the

Year! We are very happy to announce that Ms.Villamar,

our school’s office manager, is our Classified Employee of the Year. She has been serving our

school for 23 years. Through out these years, she has worked very hard and passionately to contrib-ute to our school’s success. Her daily enthusiasm

and commitment strengthen the walls of our office. She is always willing to assist and support teachers, staff, students and parents. We highly appreciate

her dedication to our school.

Mrs. Blake - Parent of the Year She has been helping at Monroe for several years.

She has supported Monroe by serving on the School as a PTO president. She has also volunteered her

time at many activities and school events over the years. We want to thank her for all she has done

and continues to do for Monroe!

Exámenes–La Contabilidad Comprensiva

Contabilidad Comprensiva significa que nosotros de-

bemos asesorar el aprendizaje de los alumnos para

asegurarnos de que tenemos programas y practicas

efectivas. Esta primavera serán las evaluaciones

SBAC. El sistema de evaluación de Smarter Balanced

incluye una serie de diferencias de la mayoría de las

evaluaciones estatales. Las evaluaciones serán por

internet y las preguntas permitirán a los estudiantes

demostrar sus habilidades analíticas, de investigación

y escritura. Acomodaciones para los estudiantes con

deseabilidades y aprendices de Ingles serán incluidas

para medir con precisión el progreso de ellos. Un sis-

tema por internet proveerá datos claros sobre el logro

y crecimiento académico de los estudiantes. Estos in-

formes proveerán a los padres, maestros, directores, y

a otros lideres con información que pueden utilizar

para ayudar a los estudiantes hacer un progreso aun

mayor. Las evaluaciones que administramos en la es-

Los alumnos también toman exámenes desarrollados

por los maestros en ortografía, lectura, escritura y ma-

temáticas. En Santa Ana damos gran variedad

de evaluaciones a los alumnos en todos los niveles

para monitorear su progreso y también para asegurar

la efectividad de los programas académicos.

Todos los estudiantes de California en 3er-5o grado deben tomar el Examen SBAC. Los

Ms. Villamar, secretaria de la escuela, es nuestra Empleada Clasificada del Año. Ella a servido a nues-tra escuela por 23 años. Al pasar de los años, ella ha trabajado ardua y apasionadamente para contribuir al éxito de nuestra escuela. Su entusiasmo y compro-

miso diario a fortalecido a nuestra escuela. Ella siempre esta dispuesta ha ayudar y ha asistir a todos los maestros, personal, estudiantes y padres. Apre-

ciamos grandemente su dedicación a nuestra escue-la.

Thanks to the American Heart Association, students, teachers and Mrs. Nunez, Monroe School now has a vegetable garden. In February students partici-

pated in setting up the garden by building the planter boxes and planting the seedlings. Each class

was assigned a planter box to be responsible for monitoring the plants. Students from each class will take turns keeping an eye on the garden to be sure

the garden is getting water and free of weeds.

We are excited to be able to provide this experience

for the students and look forward to May or June when the plants will be ready to harvest and enjoy.

Parents and students can experience what the Smarter Balanced assessment will be like

by taking a practice test at smarterbalanced.org. Practice tests are avail-

able in English and math for grades 3 through 8 and high school.

Gracias a la Asociación de Corazón Americano,

maestros, alumnos y Sra. Núñez, la Escuela Monroe ahora tiene un huerto. En febrero los estudiantes

participaron en la creación del jardín construyendo macetas y sembrando las semillas. A cada clase se le asignó una maceta por la cual serán responsables del cuidado de las plantas. Los estudiantes de cada

clase se turnarán para vigilar el jardín y asegurarse de que el jardín está siendo regado con agua y esté

libre de hierbas malas.

Estamos contentos de haber podido proveer esta

experiencia para los estudiantes y esperamos para Mayo y Junio cosechar la siembra y disfrutarla

Quick Tips for Parents

A Power Strategy for Learning and Test-taking

1. Be your child’s number one cheerleader! Let them know that you believe in them!!

2. Encourage your child to try hard and do his/her best every day at school.

3. Know when the state tests are given. Place these dates on your family calendar

4. Display a positive attitude about the state tests. Help your child understand that tests are a part of school and life. (Remember getting your driver’s license?)

5. Review your child’s curriculum and/or the test blueprints – talk to your child about what he/she is learning. Ask your child What did you learn about in school today? Tell them to be specific. Help your child learn every day.

6. Make sure your child understands the value you place on his/her achievement. Help your child keep the test in perspective. It is a very IMPORTANT test, but it’s only ONE indication of achievement.

7. Encourage your child to stay relaxed and calm during the state tests. If your child gets nervous about tests, give him/her ideas of ways to stay calm!

8. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a good breakfast before the state tests, and drinks plenty of water! A good night’s sleep and a wholesome breakfast are very important for effective performance. Snacks will be provided for each day of testing.

9. Remind your child to bring his/her eyeglasses to school on test days and every day.

10. Students should have perfect attendance during testing. Make sure your child is at school on time so that he/she won’t feel rushed on the testing days. Students should get to school early if they are go-ing to eat breakfast at school.

11. Send your child to school on a positive note on test day. Tell him/her that you believe in them and you know that they will do their best!

12. Set aside time every day for your child to do homework and to read every day. Review your child’s homework when you can. (Limiting the amount of time your child watches television provides time for homework!)

13. Set up a designated area for your child to study. Have supplies ready that your child may need.

14. Every day, even weekends encourage your child to read 30-45 minutes a day. THE MORE YOU READ THE MORE YOU ACHIEVE. Students have to read for long periods of time when taking the test.

15. Remind your child they can take all the time they need and not rush through the test. We ask stu-dents to TAKE THEIR TIME -DO IT RIGHT. The students have a chance to win a prize. Talk to your child about “sticking to it” and doing their best up until they complete the last answer.

16. Encourage your child to take their time and work carefully and thoroughly. The tests are not timed so stu-dents should work slowly and re-check their answers. Re-mind students to use testing strategies they have learned like Warm It Up and Why right? Why wrong?

5. Revise el plan de estudio de su hijo, platique con su hijo(a) para que le diga que es lo que está aprendiendo en las escuela. Digale que le platique detalles. Ayúdele en su aprendizaje.

6. Es muy importante que su hijo(a) sepa que usted valora todos sus logros. Ayude a sus hijos(as) para tengan en mente los exámenes. Los examenes son muy importantes, pero esto es solo una forma de in-dicar el progreso académico.

7. Trate de que su hijo(a) se mantenga calmado y relajado durante el periodo de exámenes. Si su hijo(a) se pone muy nervioso con los exámenes, ayudele a calmarse.

8. Es muy importante que duerman bien, que tomen un buen desayuno y que tomen suficiente agua antes de los exámenes. Dormir bien y un buen desayuno son muy importantes para que tenga un buen desempeño en los exámenes.

9. Recuérdele a su hijo(a) traer todo el tiempo sus lentes (si es que necesita lentes).

10. Deben de tener asistencia perfecta durante los exámenes estatales. Traiga a su hijo(a) a la escuela a tiempo para que no se sienta presionado por llegar a tiempo durante los dias de exámenes. Los alum-nos deben llegar temprano si es que van a desayunar en la escuela.

11. Mande a su hijo(a) a la escuela y digale algo positivo los días de exámenes. Recuérdeles que usted cree en ellos y que sabe que ellos van a poner todo su empeño!

12. Haga tiempo todos los dias para que su hijo(a) haga la tarea y para que la lea. Revise la tarea siempre que pueda. (Limite el tiempo que el niño(a) pasa frente al televisor, de esa manera tendra más tiempo para hacer la tarea!)

13. Asigne un area para estudiar y para hacer sus tareas y tenga los útiles necesarios.

14. Haga que su hijo(a) lea de 30-45 minutos diarios todos los días. Mientras más lean por tiempos largos, mayores seran los logros y con practica estaran mas listos para tomar el exámen.

15. Recuérdenles a sus hijoa(as) que pueden tomar todo el tiempo que necesiten. Deben de tomarse su tiempo para poder hacer el trabajo bien. Siempre deci-mos TOMEN SU TIEMPO-HAGANLO BIEN! Los alumnos pueden ganar un premio por perseverar y poner su es-fuerzo hasta el final del exámen.

16. Motive a su hijo(a) para que se tome su tiempo, ten-ga cuidado al hacer su trabajo y para que lo termine. No tiene un tiempo especifico para terminarlos, por lo que deben hacerlos con calma y tomar el tiempo para volver a revisar las respuestas. Recuérdele al alumno que haga uso de todas las estrategias que aprendió como por ejem-plo: “Warm it up” (Calentamiento en Lectura) y “Why right” (Por que correcto o incorrecto?)
