Progress Report

SECTION A: Project profile

Project number & title : ATC 08/2010A - APEC-ATCWG Biofuels Network Annual Symposium and

Biotrade/Technical Training Workshop Time period covered in

report:

03/12/2010 – 10/02/2011 Date submitted: 10/02/2011

Committee / WG / Fora: ATCWG

Project Overseer Name:

Organization / Economy

Noppol Leksawasdi, Charin Techapun

Faculty of Agro-Industry, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand

1. Current status of project:

On schedule: YES

On budget: YES

On target to meet project objectives: YES

2. Implementation:

The proposal acceptance letter has been signed by POs and a signed copy of the letter has been returned to Program Executive on 3rd December 2010. The contractor has signed the contract with APEC Secretariat and submitted the document to APEC on 27th December 2010. The symposium venue and accommodation at Kantary Hill Hotel, Chiang Mai for active participants and keynote speakers have been reserved. The established biofuels network has been contacted; up to 10 former participants have accepted invitation to participate in next year event during 30th May – 4th June 2011. The new keynote speaker and active participants from China during the visits of PO to Qingdao (QIBEBT) during 22nd – 23rd December 2010 have also expressed their interests to participate and contribute in workshop activities. There is no deviation from the work plan. As of 10 February 2011, all six keynote speakers have been invited (U.S.A., Australia, China, Italy, Japan, and Korea). POs are also able to invite all representatives from 11 travel-funded APEC economies. The updated list of participants (LOP) table is given in the attached file.

3. Challenges: Although, there will be no problem in inviting the keynote speakers. The invitation of active participants from certain economies such as Peru, PNG, Russia, and Chile may pose challenges as there was no representative from these economies participating in the previous biofuels symposium despite several attempts of invitation with helps from ATCWG fora and Secretariat. However, the absence of negative contributing factors in the upcoming biofuels symposium network to be held next year may encourage higher level of active participation from these economies. As of 10 February 2011, the invitation of active participants from the four economies mentioned previously has been successful (see the attached LOP Table).

4. Engagement: The brochure and launching of symposium website have been prepared and advertised to stakeholders and beneficiaries at http://www.agro.cmu.ac.th/apec2011/. The experts have also been consulted on the format of training workshop to be organized.
