I have always enjoyed reading old Popular Electronics magazines when I run across them. They
bring back those childhood pipe dreams of wanting to be a scientist. The other day I stumble
across a 1954 edition and this article about solar power. I thought it would be a good article as
an eye opener for us to see the vision they had 62 years ago and compare that to where we are
today. The last sentence was the thought provoker for me.

Hi All,
Back in November, I shared that my noise level on 2M had shot
through the roof during evening hours making EME no longer possible
in any direction. The noise was 30db over s9 at times. I had tracked
down the source to a transformer and a home about 100 yards from
me using my and FT-817 and a 4 element beam.
The home owner was completely uncooperative in talking to me. I
contacted our local utility ( PSE&G) who put me in touch with their
Power Quality expert . I explained that I am a Ham radio Operator and
what the problem seems to be. I figured i would not get any help, but
to my surprise he immediately ( that day) came down with a spectrum
analyzer and a tracking antenna and confirmed the RFI was " scream-
ing" ( his words not mine) from the home.
The utility confirmed that the home owner had recently had a contrac-
tor convert all his fixtures to LEDs . The utility was able to prove to the
home owner, who was very defensive, that there was something
wrong with the Led lamps and acquired several samples of the different
LEDS lamps installed in the home and sent them back to the manufac-
ture questioning how they met FCC part 15 requirements. It took
several months but today , I got the call from the Utility that the manu-
facture ( Eaton) sent them a full set of replacement LED lamps, with a
different power supply design. He confirmed they were clean of RFI
and personally went back to the home and replaced over a dozen LED
lamps and fixtures for the home owner and confirmed the RF spectrum
is now clear.
Now that is what you call excellent customer service.
See you back on the moon.

HEATHKIT SB-610 MONITOR SCOPE
This station monitor scope would be a great project for a Heathkit collector. It monitors the quality of your transmitted signals directly in-line with your coax and can monitor received signal characteristics with an appropriate connection to the receiver IF. Here is a link to a manual http://www.vmarsmanuals.co.uk/archive/1310_SB-610_User_Manual.pdf and here is a good write-up on refurbishing an SB-610. http://collinsra.org/home/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Heathkit-sb610.pdf Cosmetically, its cabinet needs repainting but surprisingly the vacuum tube electronics appear to be working fine. Although I have not tested it recently with an on-air signal, the ‘scope controls are all fully functional and the CRT is bright and clear with no burn marks.
While eBay prices fall in the $125-135 range, the cosmetic condition of this unit demands I ask only $75.00. Request local pickup in Stan-
ley; no shipping.
I have additional pictures and would gladly answer any questions I can at K4DPF(at)ARRL.net.

DRAKE MN-2000 MATCHING NETWORK
I need to generate funds to put into our Digital Mesh Network project. This Drake MN-2000 Matching Network (antenna tuner), SN 2573, is in absolutely outstanding condition with the exception of a small surface blemish on the top near the rear. It will handle the full legal limit on 10-80m bands (Non-WARC). I have only tested it with 100 watts; don’t own an amplifier anymore. Here is a PDF file of the user manual. : http://www.radiomanual.info/schemi/ACC_matching/Drake_MN-2000_user.pdf I’ve seen it recently on eBay in the $250-$300 range. I’m asking $200 for it with local pick-up in Stanley.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV) BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV) BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV) BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV) -------- UPDATE: 3/22/2016 12:30 p.m. Dynamic Aviation tells WHSV the plane's arrival has been delayed until Wednesday afternoon in Bridgewater. We're working to confirm exactly when the plane is
expected to land.
A Valley company is working to help the first presi-dential aircraft to be called “Air Force One” take
flight again.
According to Ken Stoltzfus, Project Communications Coordinator, the 1948 USAF Lockheed C-121A Con-stellation also known as "Columbine II" was retired
by the USAF in 1968 and sold surplus in 1970.
He said, "It then sat in salvage yards in Arizona until 1990 when it was made airworthy again. After flying a few hours it was parked in Marana, AZ in 2003. The plane served President Eisenhower from 1952
to 1954."
Now, after a year of work by a dedicated and skilled team,
Dynamic Aviation's Columbine II is nearly ready to fly.
The website, john2031.com, has been updating the public on the project's progress. The site says, "according to Dy-namic Aviation's founder, Karl D. Stoltzfus Sr., this was on-ly possible because of the on-site leadership of Dynamic's Brian Miklos and the generous contribution of others, in particular Scott Glover and his Mid-America Flight Muse-
um, of Mt. Pleasant, Tx."
The site also says, "the team has not only prepared the air-craft for a ferry flight, they have gone to the effort of bring-ing it back to airworthy status and will fly it to their home base, Bridgewater Airpark, Bridgewater, Va., as a certifi-cated aircraft. All systems have been thoroughly gone through; brakes overhauled and new tires installed; many
engine accessories overhauled, and much more. At Bridgewater it will be restored to its former glory and
prepared for the air show circuit."
The site adds, "Columbine II was mostly intact including its 2500-HP, Wright R-3350 engines and much of the original
interior, instruments, avionics, and other important histori-cal details, but was at risk of being scrapped because of
the complexity and cost of preparing it for flight."
According to Katie Dillon, Communications Manager for Dy-namic Aviation, the plane is spending Monday night in Tex-as. The plane returned to flight in Arizona over the week-end. Monday afternoon, she told WHSV the plane is ex-pected to land at Dynamic Aviation in Bridgewater between 2 and 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. For those who would like to join in welcoming this historic aircraft, Dynamic Aviation
is setting up a designated area beside our facility to watch.
The website, john2031.com, adds, "Dynamic Aviation, a Virginia for-profit corporation, purchased Columbine II on a tax free exchange basis with an aircraft being sold. When that process is satisfactorily completed the airplane will be
transferred to a non-profit museum."

The club met in the court house parking lot with a quorum of ten, and actually took care of business. The Luray Festival (May 7) will include flyers about an upcoming license prep class (date TBD pending interest); additionally, we will post announcements for the license prep at all Emergency, Fire & Rescue, Police Depts, Sheriff's Office and County agen-cies. We OK'd reimbursement to K4RHD for securing the Liability In-surance online (which I did Saturday morning; Tim will notify Zory that we need the flyers for use at the Luray Mayfest. Alternately, Zory can turn over whatever work he has completed for someone to finish; likewise the name tags; There was a sidebar discussion about an idea to develop a "ham mesh net" telephone capability between all Fire, Police, and Res-
cue operations, for a communication blackout. This is seen as a service which the club might supply, and which would add strategic value to our presence in the County;
The final piece of business was to task K4RHD with securing a key from the Sheriff's office for the meeting room, and several members will look into alternative venues for club meetings. KQ4D sent in a proxy request that we meet in a restaurant or more socially in a home on occasion, as we have done a couple of times. The parking lot meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:45 p.m. KE4EI and K4RHD took part in the Mountain Valley EMCOM meeting Saturday, in Front Royal. The meetings will become monthly on a trial basis. Next month's meeting will be April 9, in Front Royal again.

Thanks for the sharing the "CQ Serenade". I agree with Bob regarding
the Hamfest music.
It "flooded me" with a memory of the following: a little off the subject, I
know.
When I was dating my future wife (and my 3 sons' mother) in 1960/1961, her father was a minister. I had taught her the Morse
code and instead of sitting there in church and listening to his sermons, she and I would send each other messages, love notes and other stuff via morse code by tapping on each other's hands. She became very proficient at it and even after we were married in September of 1961, I could not convince her to obtain even her novice license. She did not like the technical part. We had named it the same, "CQ Serenade", meaning to switch to code instead of talking to each other. We sent messages for years to each other via the tapping, on the telephone ver-bally (dit/dah) and sometimes by 2 tiny, simple transistorized oscillators I had constructed in plastic soap travel cases. I had fabricated a simple key on each one and we listened to each other's oscillator via hearing-aid-type earphones with around 25 ft. of cord between us, even some-times by telephone. One of her last few words she spoke was "88"
when she died of cancer in 1982.
Again, I thank you for the "flash-back in time" for me and for everyone
listening to my fond memory.

Ellsworth

All are invited to the former N&W depot at Boyce, Virginia, on Saturday, April 30, 2016, between noon and 3 PM. There will be a cook out as well as Morse telegraph demonstrations in observance of Samuel Morse's birthday. Although "Morse Day" is April 23, the April 30 date is selected so as to allow people to attend a Morse Day event elsewhere, then visit Boyce the following Saturday --as well as to send best wishes to telegraphers at DK Office that day if they are unable to travel I hope you are able to visit. The Amateur Radio Operators Preparing for the Worst
this recently released national magazine article has a couple of nice mentions about Virginia.
Thanks Roger, N1XP
The article:
Carolyn Kaster / AP
There’s a sense of urgency in the air at a Virginia nuclear power plant. Everything within at least a five-mile radius is at immediate risk due to a critical meltdown. One of the emergency responders opens the envelope she’s holding, scans its contents, and announces the bad news: “We just lost 911 and the
cell towers are overloaded.”
There are some groans, but the team of amateur radio operators knew this was a possibility, and they’re prepared. They have their radios at the ready to coordinate evacuations, making sure that no shelters are overwhelmed and that evacuees arrive at the right locations. Two detach themselves from the rest and make their way over to the lead coordinator. They’re acting as the points of contact for all emergency services, which means they’re responsible for
relaying information about everything from fires to urgent medical care to illegal activities.

The club newsletter, the Monitorthe Monitorthe Monitorthe Monitor, is provided free of charge monthly to all members of all three clubs via email
distribution, in PDF format. However, it is the individual club members’ responsibility to notify the newsletter
editor directly of all changes in email address. Electronic back issues will be provided free to members on re-
quest.
Elderly, disabled, or special-needs members may make special arrangements with their respective club offic-
ers to receive a hardcopy of the Monitor via U.S. mail in lieu of the electronic PDF version. However, the hard-
copy requires additional production and delivery time and is not guaranteed to arrive before the scheduled
monthly club meeting dates.
Members not receiving the electronic Monitor in a timely fashion (e.g., before their monthly club meeting)
should notify the newsletter editor promptly to investigate and resolve the problem with distribution. Members
who are using the latest update version of Adobe Reader and experience trouble opening the Monitor email
attachment can contact the newsletter editor for assistance.
