Just ThinkingBy: May Jones In a letter to Thomas Mann Randolph Jr. on August 27, 1786, Thomas Jeffersonwrote:“The sovereign invigorator of the body is exercise, and of all the exercises, walkingis best. A horse but a kind of half exercise, and a carriage is no better than a cradle. No one knows, till he tries, how easily the habit of walking is acquired.” In my fairly long life, my size seven feet have seen many miles. I began walkingfor a healthy body, but I found that it is, by far, the most effective prescription for myoverall well being. It is the framework and foundation of my life - improving mydisposition, straightening my posture, inflating my lungs, and opening my mind. Henry David Thoreau claimed that he could not preserve his health or spirits with-out spending at least four hours a day walking in the woods. Only by doing so,could he make a journal entry on April 3, 1852 that read: “The bluebird carries thesky on his back.” The morning is the best time for walking I think. That’s when the dew is still freshon the faces of the flowers and it’s before the bugs wake up. When the sun is low inthe morning sky, spider webs give their finest show of the day, and tiny droplets ofwater can be seen clinging to the taller blades of grass. It’s when you can hear thebirds planning their day, and a clean coolness still lingers in the air. Along the way, and over time, I began to notice the return of the red wingedblackbirds in spring, flowers giving way to their fruits in the heat of summer, theurgent scampering of squirrels and chipmunks in autumn, and ditch puddles turningto panes of glass in winter. Most of the time, I walk with no companion. All five senses, (some neurologistssay nine or more) seem to require solitude. Jon Young, who wrote What the RobinKnows, said: “I always listen farther than I can see. This mental image helps somepeople extend their range of hearing. By listening to the silence, you’ll hear more ofeverything.” To put it simply, walking cleanses my soul. I have used my walks to solve aproblem, shed a problem, recalibrate a personal goal, plan things, create things, ormake a correction to a way of thinking. Over the years, I have made good friendswith myself - a very important friend to have indeed! Thomas Jefferson was one smart fellow.

ON THE FARM by Andy Manne
This week’s ag report issponsored by:
REVERSE MORTGAGES: Are you cosidering placing your farm under a reverse mortgage? Some retirees are conflicted about trying to leave an inheritance vs maintaining their standard ofliving. Living longer than expected, insufficient sav-ings, higher cost of living and medical expensesare just some of the things making it difficult formany older Americans to pay for retirement. Securing a reverse mortgage is one solutionmany people are exploring. A reverse mort-gage let’s homeowners who are 62 or older bor-row their home equity. The loan accrues inter-est and is paid back when the borrower dies ormoves out of the home. This means that theborrower’s heirs will probably inherit less. Theystill inherit the home, but must repay the reverse mortgage — usually by selling the home. If yourintent and your offspring’s intent to keep the farm in the family, then a reverse mortgage will notwork for your family. However, if you have no family interested in taking over the farm, then, a reverse mortgage maymake sense for you. Many seniors may be surprised to learn that their heirs not only do not care about receiving aninheritance, they are ready and willing to sacrifice their own finances to care for aging parents. Arecent poll found that 75 percent of adults with living parents were willing to sacrifice their ownfinances to help their parents. It appears that the biggest complaint about reverse mortgages from heirs is the hassle of dealingwith the Reverse Mortgage lender. What banks don’t tell you is that the reverse mortgage accrues interest, compounded, even afterthe owner dies, and can eat up whatever is left of the equity in the house. When you die, the loanamount may be even greater than the value of the home due to interest. However, your heirs willnever have to pay more than the value of the home. It is best for heirs to contact the reversemortgage lender as soon as possible after the death of the borrower. It is important to make surethat your heirs know that they must notify the servicer (lender) within 30 days of the homeowner’sdeath of their intentions — what they plan to do with the home. This early notification preserves theheir’s options gives them up to 12 months to settle. If they don’t notify the servicer, then the lendercan act on their own. Do you research before you make a move. There is a great deal of information on the web.
