He was 84. "General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19," the Powell family wrote on Facebook. "We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American," they said, noting he was fully vaccinated. Powell was a distinguished and trailblazing professional soldier whose career took him from combat duty in Vietnam to becoming the first Black national security adviser during the end of Ronald Reagan's presidency and the youngest and first African American chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush. His national popularity soared in the after- math of the US-led coalition victory during the Gulf War, and for a time in the mid-90s, he was considered a leading contender to become the first Black President of the United States. But his reputation would be for- ever stained when, as George W. Bush's first secretary of state, he pushed faulty intelligence before the United Nations to advocate for the Iraq War, which he would later call a "blot" on his record. NO DISCIPLINARY ACTION Nebraska’s attorney general says he won’t seek disciplinary action against doctors who prescribe controversial, off-label drugs to treat and prevent coronavirus infections, as long as they get informed consent from patients and don’t engage in misconduct. The office of Attorney General Doug Peterson released a legal opinion saying it didn’t see data to jus- tify legal action against health care professionals who prescribe ivermec- tin, a decades-old parasite treatment, or hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug that former President Donald Trump took to try to prevent a COVID -19 infection. Many health experts and leading medical groups have been trying to stop the use of both drugs, arguing that they can cause harmful side effects and there’s little evidence they help. BOARD BACKS OFF OF PROPOSAL A state energy board on Friday backed off of its controversial proposal to seek veto power over agreements between utilities and private wind and solar projects. The proposal would likely drive renewable energy projects to locate outside Nebraska, advocates told the Nebraska Power Review Board. “They’ll go elsewhere,” said Stephen Bruckner, an attor- ney for the Omaha Public Power District. The Review Board had created a firestorm of opposition from the state’s public power utilities and envi- ronmentalists after proposing that it be granted the authority to approve or deny “power purchase agreements” between utilities and private pro- jects mostly wind and solar farms that provide electricity. The board also wanted to be able to provide recommendations any time a utility sought to retire a power plant, such as when OPPD decided to close its Fort Calhoun nuclear plant in 2016. Right now, the five-member board, which is appointed by the governor, has the authority to approve or deny construction of new power plants and related projects by the state’s public power utilities, but it doesn’t have a say over deals reached with privately developed wind and solar projects that sell energy. NO DISCIPLINARY ACTION Nebraska’s attorney general says he won’t seek disciplinary action against doctors who prescribe controversial, off-label drugs to treat and prevent coronavirus infections, as long as they get informed consent from patients and don’t engage in misconduct.
