Program –Casey Curtis – Chief of the Granville Fire Dept. will be discussing their request for an off the road rescue vehicle. I presume you recognize the last name. How are you known as a Kiwanian? Share BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVRSARIES Mike Barrett 8/11 Val & Lisa Matula 8/9 Doug & Marilyn Boldon 8/10 COMMUNICATIONS Thank you card from Matt Bires of the Rozzi Famous Fireworks to Mike Birkmeyer, thanking us for the opportunity to light up the sky for our 4 th of July Celebration. Thank you from Phyllis L. CarlsonRiehm Exec. Dir. Of Action Ohio for our sponsoring of the annual Flo’s Garden Party on July 23 rd (Sat.) at the Robbins Hunter Museum and the donation of our tent, chairs and tables for the Party. The project earned $8,700 for ACTION OHIO Coalition For Battered Women. Newark Kiwanis will have a retirement party for Bob Evans at the Buckingham House on North 6 th St. in Newark on August 11 th (Thur.) from 5 – 7 PM. Bob is their Club Secretary. I presume he is retiring from work or maybe as the club secretary. COMMITTEE REPORTS Pelotonia Rick Pyka reported it is over. There were 7,048 riders that were greeted by a sizable turnout of people, lots of bell ringing and cheering of support, but no bands. Also Swasey Chapel was lit in green this year. Rick thanked all of our members that helped this year. A total of 15 Kiwanians. Jerry Miller mentioned he and a few others were at The Pub for a little relaxation and one of the riders in appreciation of their efforts bought them a beer. I hope the rider was not drinking and riding. Knox County Aktion Club Brian Gottfried mentioned Bob Handelman of Newark Kiwanis attended their meeting and mentioned it was very well run. Jen Lewis mentioned the next Aktion Club meeting will be August 16 th at the E. S. Weiant School 116 N, 22 nd St. in Newark. The meeting will start at 5:45 pm. The Charter meeting will probably be in October. Terry Van Offeren would like to have a meeting of the Ag. Committee next week (8/15) after our regular meeting to discuss projects and budget. Tent / Stage: 1. Tuesday (9 th ) 5:30 pm take down 2 Pinnacles. I know its past but the next one isn’t. 2. Stage setup, for the Great Granville Picnic 4:00 pm Saturday (13 th ). Lesa will be available to determine the location. 3. Sunday (14 th ) to take down the stage. Check your emails for the times. Bryn Du Cross Country Invitational – Jen reported they will need ten Kiwanians to assist in parking (actually directing cars to the parking areas) cars and ticket sales. A sign up sheet was passed around and probably also at the next 3 meetings. The Cross Country meet is Sept 3 rd (Sat.) Race times 8:00 – 11:00 am. If you do not plan to be at a meeting contact Jen Lewis at [email protected] This would be very helpful to the Granville Cross Country team and the school and your chance to share. Interclub? – I only see two members. We need 4 members for an interclub. Bob Carpenter of the Columbus Northland Kiwanis club asked Jen if she would like to work at the Ohio State Fair Gift Shop. Jen and Alice worked from 4:00 – 10:30 pm. I presume this was for one day only. PROGRAM Don Lewis introduced our speaker Dave Ganger. Dave is a retired Army pilot. He flew the 76 Army Cobra Helicopter. They live in Granville and have 4 children. Three of the children are in college and the other one is in Granville Schools. Dave said this is his fourth year of riding in the Pelotonia. This year some riders started in New Albany and some in Columbus on their way to Gambier. He rides for “Team Granville”. Each year they design a new shirt to wear on the ride. He said the bicyclist really appreciate the welcome they get when they ride into Granville. TAASC is a chapter of Disabled Sports USA and they are in partnership with Am Trykes. They coordinate the ordering, assigning of people, fitting the bikes and delivery of the bikes to people. They are a local chapter of AMBUCS and their unit is TAASC – AMBUCS. TAASC was formed as a community service in association with Jimmy Crum’s Recreation Unlimited in Powell Ohio. Monday  News    page  2  of  2    Program  cont.  They  accept  all  disabled  people;    young,  old,  &  disabled  service  members.  The  families  of  the  disabled  are  included  in  their  activities.    There  is  a  nominal  fee  for  the  use  of  their  equipment.    Stipends  are  available  if  people  are  in  need  of  financial  assistance.     The  activities  involve  archery,  cycling,  kayaking,  water  skiing,  sailing,  fishing,  rock  climbing,  snowboarding  and  alpine  skiing.    We  have  certified  instructors  to  teach  and  assist  the  people  in  developing  their  skills  to  participate  in  these  activities.  Summer  activities  are  done  on  a  22-­‐acre  City  of  Columbus  special  use  park  across  from  the  Zoo  in  Powell.    Winter  activities  are  at  Mad  River  Mountain  Northwest  of  Marysville  and  Snow  Trails  in  Mansfield.    Skies  and  snowboards  are  available  for  the  blind,  one-­‐leg  skiers  and  other  disabilities.    Families  of  the  disabled  participate  in  these  activities  and  often  become  volunteers  to  assist  others.         Volunteers  (400)  run  our  organization  and  make  us  successful.  They  assist  with  the  website  and  behind  the  scenes  activities  to  help  give  a  100%  effort  to  get  people  out  and  active.    Some  disabled  people  also  volunteer.    Many  people  visit  our  activities  once  and  the  next  time  they  come  back  as  a  volunteer.    Groups  can  also  volunteer.     Our  purpose  is  not  to  concentrate  on  what  a  person  can’t  do  but  on  what  they  can  do.                                                5 0 / 5 0   d r a w i n g   w i n n e r  –  Nolan  Cox  –  no  jackpot     (+/-­‐$331)  -­‐  but  Nolan  does  win  another  free  Kiwanis  dinner.
