v Pelotonia -‐ Rick Pyka reported it is over. There were 7,048 riders that were greeted by a sizable turnout of people, lots of bell ringing and cheering of support, but no bands. Also Swasey Chapel was lit in green this year. Rick thanked all of our members that helped this year. A total of 15 Kiwanians. Jerry Miller mentioned he and a few others were at The Pub for a little relaxation and one of the riders in appreciation of their efforts bought them a beer. I hope the rider was not drinking and riding.
v Knox County Aktion Club -‐ Brian Gottfried mentioned Bob Handelman of Newark Kiwanis attended their meeting and mentioned it was very well run. Jen Lewis mentioned the next Aktion Club meeting will be August 16th at the E. S. Weiant School -‐ 116 N, 22nd St. in Newark. The meeting will start at 5:45 pm. The Charter meeting will probably be in October.
v Terry Van Offeren would like to have a meeting of the
Ag. Committee next week (8/15) after our regular meeting to discuss projects and budget.
v Tent / Stage: 1. Tuesday (9th) 5:30 pm take down 2 Pinnacles. I know its past but the next one isn’t. 2. Stage setup, for the Great Granville Picnic 4:00 pm Saturday (13th). Lesa will be available to determine the location. 3. Sunday (14th) to take down the stage. Check your e-‐mails for the times.
v Bryn Du Cross Country Invitational – Jen reported they will need ten Kiwanians to assist in parking (actually directing cars to the parking areas) cars and ticket sales. A sign up sheet was passed around and probably also at the next 3 meetings. The Cross Country meet is Sept 3rd (Sat.) Race times 8:00 – 11:00 am. If you do not plan to be at a meeting contact Jen Lewis at [email protected] This would be very helpful to the Granville Cross Country team and the school and your chance to share.
v Interclub? – I only see two members. We need 4 members for an interclub. Bob Carpenter of the Columbus Northland Kiwanis club asked Jen if she would like to work at the Ohio State Fair Gift Shop. Jen and Alice worked from 4:00 – 10:30 pm. I presume this was for one day only.
P R O G R A M Don Lewis introduced our speaker Dave Ganger. Dave is a retired Army pilot. He flew the 76 Army Cobra Helicopter. They live in Granville and have 4 children. Three of the children are in college and the other one is in Granville Schools. Dave said this is his fourth year of riding in the Pelotonia. This year some riders started in New Albany and some in Columbus on their way to Gambier. He rides for “Team Granville”. Each year they design a new shirt to wear on the ride. He said the bicyclist really appreciate the welcome they get when they ride into Granville. TAASC is a chapter of Disabled Sports USA and they are in partnership with Am Trykes. They coordinate the ordering, assigning of people, fitting the bikes and delivery of the bikes to people. They are a local chapter of AMBUCS and their unit is TAASC – AMBUCS. Monday News page 2 of 2 Program cont. They accept all disabled people; young, old, & disabled service members. The families of the disabled are included in their activities. There is a nominal fee for the use of their equipment. Stipends are available if people are in need of financial assistance. The activities involve archery, cycling, kayaking, water skiing, sailing, fishing, rock climbing, snowboarding and alpine skiing. We have certified instructors to teach and assist the people in developing their skills to participate in these activities. Summer activities are done on a 22-‐acre City of Columbus special use park across from the Zoo in Powell. Winter activities are at Mad River Mountain Northwest of Marysville and Snow Trails in Mansfield. Skies and snowboards are available for the blind, one-‐leg skiers and other disabilities. Families of the disabled participate in these activities and often become volunteers to assist others. Volunteers (400) run our organization and make us successful. They assist with the website and behind the scenes activities to help give a 100% effort to get people out and active. Some disabled people also volunteer. Many people visit our activities once and the next time they come back as a volunteer. Groups can also volunteer. Our purpose is not to concentrate on what a person can’t do but on what they can do. 5 0 / 5 0 d r a w i n g w i n n e r – Nolan Cox – no jackpot (+/-‐$331) -‐ but Nolan does win another free Kiwanis dinner.
