Week of the streakSome go down and some survive during exciting Friday night of league actionBy Eric LuskEditor

There are plenty of streaks to talk about this week as the high school football regular season nears the mid-point.

Some streaks were snapped, while others survived another round of chal-lenges.

• Mount Airy saw its 31-game con-ference winning streak ended by West Stokes on Friday. The streak dates back to late in the 2006 season. Will the Granite Bears’ run of four straight conference titles also end this fall? It’s too early to tell but the Bears likely will need some help to keep it alive another year.

• Starmount now becomes the area team with the longest conference win-ning streak. The Rams won for the 28th consecutive time in Mountain Valley play, beating Ashe County 51-14 in West Jefferson. Ashe County was the last team to beat Starmount in a confer-ence game, back in October 2007.

• The Rams have won their last 25

regular season games, dating back to an early season loss to East Surry dur-ing the 2009 campaign. Starmount has scored in double figures for 30 games in a row and has avoided a shutout in its last 60 contests.

• Surry Central football players were just toddlers (and maybe a few were only newborns) the last time the Golden Eagles’ won at East Surry. That 15-year streak came to an end Friday, thanks to a late touchdown from Wes Brown that lifted Central to a 27-23 triumph.

• South Stokes turned the tables on a not-so-glorious conference streak. The Sauras had not won a conference game since 2008 but put that to rest with a 13-7 overtime victory against North Stokes. After beating Alleghany to end the conference campaign in 2008, the Sauras posted back-to-back 0-7 sea-sons in league play.

• North Surry extended its home winning streak to eight straight with a comfortable victory against Bishop McGuinness. The Hounds were 6-0 at home last year.

1It’s looking more and more like no one is going to be able to chal-

lenge Starmount and Wilkes Central for supremacy in the Mountain Val-ley 1A/2A Conference. Just like last fall, the Rams and Eagles will keep us waiting until the last night of the regular season (Oct. 28) to decide who gets the regular season trophy. It’s just hard to see either team stumbling in league play heading into that match-up.

2Elkin can no longer say it’s the last team to beat Mount Airy in a

conference football game. West Stokes ended the Granite Bears’ 31-game Northwest Conference win streak on Friday. The streak dates back to the 2006 season, when the Buckin’ Elks came to the Granite City and handed the home team a convincing setback in a Monday make-up game. Elkin went on to win a state title in 2006. Mount Airy went on to start what would be a four-year run of domination in its conference with a vic-tory at East Wilkes the next week.

3Starmount-Wilkes Central may not be the only game with confer-

ence title implications on the final night of the regular season after all. If things continue on their current path, the West Stokes at North Surry clash on Oct. 28 could be for all the marbles in the Northwest 1A/2A. North Surry im-proved to 4-0 overall, 1-0 in the North-west with a 39-13 triumph over Bishop McGuinness on Friday night. West Stokes jumped to 5-0, 1-0 with its vic-tory against Mount Airy. Both are 2A schools.

4Don’t discount Surry Central in the Northwest 1A/2A Conference

title conversation either. The Golden Eagles have won three straight and have a pounding rusher in Wes Brown (insert your “what-can-Brown-do-for-you?” references here). Brown rushed, plowed, galloped and high-stepped his way for 180 yards against East Surry on Friday night.

5North Surry has been tough to beat at home over the past two sea-

sons. After going 1-10 overall in 2009, the Greyhounds have now won eight games in a row in the friendly confines of Charles Atkins Stadium. Last year’s home victims included Forbush, El-kin, Ashe County, North Stokes, South Stokes and Surry Central. North Surry has topped Ashe County and Bishop

McGuinness on home turf thus far this season. The next two games, though, will be away -- at North Stokes this Fri-day and at South Stokes on Sept. 30.

6Tyler Woods is emerging as one of the toughest backs in the Moun-

tain Valley. The West Wilkes rusher en-joyed another 100-yard performance on Friday against East Wilkes. According to the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, Woods enjoyed a season’s best 164-yard rush-ing night, including a 62-yard TD run early in the first quarter. Wilkes Central kept him bottled up a few weeks ago, but few other foes have managed to do that.

7 Mount Airy at Surry Central just became a very intriguing game for

this Friday night. The Granite Bears’

Week Five In Review

First & 10Ten things to take away from week five of the football season

loss and the Golden Eagles’ emergence in recent weeks make for some compel-ling story lines to follow. Can Mount Airy bounce back? Can the Golden Ea-gles get over the hump of beating a foe they haven’t beaten in a long time? You can bet the atmosphere will be electric.

8Of the 17 teams we cover in Mon-day Morning Quarterback, four

remain unbeaten — two from each conference. Starmount, Wilkes Cen-tral and West Stokes are all 5-0. North Surry is now 4-0. It’s too bad we can’t stop the season here for a few weeks and have a mini MVAC vs. Northwest Chal-lenge. Any combination Starmount vs. West Stokes, Wilkes Central vs. North Surry, Starmount vs. North Surry and Wilkes Central vs. West Stokes would be a fan’s delight. Starmount and North Surry have played in recent years but this year’s meeting was a casualty of the shortened schedule.

9Two of the most storied programs in our area — Elkin and East Sur-

ry — are the only squads from the two local leagues with winless records. Who would have thought just a couple of years ago that we’d be talking about a Buckin’ Elks team with an 0-4 record and heading into its next game (at Star-mount) as the heavy underdog? Yet, that is the case. Sometimes the player cycle just works that way. Both Elkin and East Surry have had heavy graduation losses the past two years. But the good news for both is that there is still plenty of time and games to play to help get back into the playoff picture. With both being 1A, advancing a round or two isn’t out of the question either.

10Wilkes Journal-Patriot report-er Zach Colburn called Wilkes

Central’s 55-47 win at West Iredell in week two of the season one of the wildest games he’s ever seen. But that contest doesn’t hold a candle to what happened when Mount Tabor and Carv-er squared off Friday. Mount Tabor won the shootout 87-52. Yes, you read that

score correctly and, no, the schools did not play an early basketball scrimmage.

The teams combined for 1,012 total yards of offense.

Week Five In Focus

On the road againMost visiting teams get it done on ‘Road Test Friday’By Eric LuskEditor

ESPN gave its most re-cent round of college football coverage the theme of “Road Test Weekend” with plenty of games featuring match-ups where the visiting team had a lot at stake.

In the same way, we could dub this past round of high school football games in the Yadkin Valley as “Road Test Friday.” And in most cases, the visiting teams passed their tests with flying colors.

In all, road teams won five of the eight games played in the Northwest 1A/2A and Mountain Valley 1A/2A con-ferences.

The biggest result, obvi-ously, came with West Stokes’ 17-6 win against Mount Airy. The Granite Bears had not lost a conference game since 2006 and have been tough to beat -- no matter the foe -- on their home field for many, many years.

The Wildcats scored all of their points in the second quar-ter and used a stifling defense to limit Mount Airy to just one TD and fewer than 100 yards rushing.

“Any team that’s able to come beat a team that’s got the reputation like Mount Airy especially on their home field is for-tunate,” West Stokes coach Jimmy Up-church said.

This doesn’t give the conference tro-phy to the Wildcats (5-0, 1-0 Northwest) just yet, but it does put them in a good spot heading into the rest of the league slate. Not to mention the boost of confer-ence the ‘Cats should get in knocking off the reigning champs.

Surry Central traveled to Pilot Moun-

tain on Friday and did something it hadn’t done in 15 years -- beat East Surry. Wes Brown had a powerful game rushing the ball, scoring the winning TD in the final minutes of the 27-23 triumph.

The victory puts the Golden Eagles at 3-1 and in the early title conversation.

“I told the kids the story yesterday. The very first year I was helping at Surry Central, we came here and won,” Eagles coach Monty Southern said Friday night. “It was a game a lot like this -- it was back and forth, physical, hard-fought. There have been a lot of games here in between that we haven’t won, so this is nice.

In another crucial North-west test, South Stokes nipped North Stokes 13-7 in overtime in Danbury. The Sauras used a big game from linebacker Zack Singleton, who recovered a fumble on North Stokes’ offensive se-ries in OT among other high-lights, to prevail.

South Stokes coach Jona-than Frasher said the game had a playoff feel to it. Both sides were packed.

“It was a great high school atmosphere,” Frasher said. “Both bands were there. It re-ally had a big-time feel to it.”

South Stokes has now won three straight games since losing a nail biter to West Wilkes in its opener at home.

North Surry was the only home team in the Northwest to hold serve, fending off Bishop McGuinness.

In the Mountain Valley 1A/2A, Starmount won a key road test at Ashe County. There is just something about playing in West Jefferson

(cooler weather, wind, longer road trip than normal) that can fluster opponents, but the Rams showed little fluster en route to a 51-14 triumph.

West Wilkes, battling for 1A playoff positioning in the MVAC, blanked East Wilkes 17-0 in Ronda for its second straight conference triumph.

Forbush and Wilkes Central, mean-while, successfully defended their home turf on a night when few teams in the area could. The Falcons topped North Wilkes, while the Eagles from Moravian Falls topped Alleghany.

Battle of the Bridge game is Friday

Even with no bridge, the Battle of the Bridge goes on.

The annual Elkin vs. Starmount football rivalry game — dubbed the Battle of the Bridge back in the 1990s by WIFM radio personality Joel Hoop-er — will be played this Friday night in Boonville.

Starmount has won the last four meetings and owns the overall lead in the series, which dates back to the 1960s.

Hooper said he wanted to capture something positive about the fierce ri-valry when coming up with a name for the annual game. Since the iconic Hugh Chatham Memorial Bridge linked El-kin with Yadkin County, he choose Battle of the Bridge because that was something that brought the two school communities together.

The Hugh Chatham Bridge fell into a state of disrepair and was torn down the past year. The game remains, though (as does a smaller, less flashier bridge to link Elkin with Jonesville and Yadkin County). WIFM’s coverage will start at 7:05 p.m. Friday, and kick-off is at 7:30 p.m.

Bishop McGuinness wins Monday night make-up game

Strike up Hank Williams, Bishop McGuinness got to play on Monday night this past week, making up a rained out game with Highland Tech.

The Villains, who had played the Friday night before against South Da-vidson, regrouped quickly and earned a 31-6 win over the Gastonia school.

Bishop McGuinness recovered four fumbles. Patrick O’Shea (98 yards, two touchdowns) and Greg Salomon (83 yards, two touchdowns) paced what the Villains’ offense. Senior Brian Jordan added another 65 yards on 10 totes.

Bishop McGuinness went on to play

again this past Friday -- its third game in a week’s time. The Villains lost that contest at North Surry 39-13.

Numbers tell story of Mount Airy’s run of dominance in league

Mount Airy didn’t just win 31 North-west games in a row. The Bears domi-nated most of them. Here are some key numbers from the streak that finally came to an end on Friday night.

38.8 — Average margin of victory in conference games during Mount Airy’s 31-game conference winning streak.

0 — Number of conference games Mount Airy won by less than 14 points during the streak.

9 — Number of times Mount Airy won by more than 50 points in confer-ence play during the streak.

11 — Number of conference shut-outs during the streak.

South Stokes gets over the hump, at last

Though South Stokes exceeded many people’s expectations in its sea-son opener -- a 14-13 loss to West Wil-

kes — coach Jonathan Frasher wasn’t pleased in the hours and days that fol-lowed. He didn’t just want a moral vic-tory against a good squad. He wanted a victory, period.

The Sauras now have three of them — the most wins in a single season for the program since the 2008 squad fin-ished 3-9. South topped North Wilkes and Alleghany from the Mountain Val-ley 1A/2A and then opened Northwest 1A/2A Conference play with a 13-7 overtime triumph at North Stokes. It was the Sauras’ first win over the coun-ty rival Vikes since a 26-8 victory on Sept. 23, 2004.

“It was a big, big victory for us, for our community and for our kids,” Fra-sher said.

Fittingly, it came down to the wire. South Stokes got on the board first

when Jacquan Martin rushed in from 3 yards out with 1:15 left in the first quarter. North Stokes answered right before the half, with quarterback Gar-rett Wood connecting on a 27-yard TD pass to Matthew Hopkins.

Both teams made their extra points, and the contest went to halftime tied 7-7.

Neither team could scratch in the

third and fourth quarters, though both had golden opportunities. An offensive pass interference penalty nullified a North Stokes touchdown. A holding penalty brought back a big South Stokes gainer that took the ball to the Vikes’ 1.

“That is just part of football,” Frasher said.

North Stokes got possession first in OT. But on the second play, South all-conference linebacker Zack Singleton pounced on a fumble on a speed-option play. South Stokes quarterback Danny Smith carried for 5 yards on the Sauras’ first snap, then Martin carried over from the 5 for the victory. Martin finished with 91 yards rushing on 16 carries.

Villains lose key RBto shoulder injury

The season is likely over for Bish-op McGuinness running back Patrick O’Shea, who had been the team’s leading ground-gainer through the first three games.

The senior suffered a dislocat-ed shoulder on Friday early in the

North Surry game. His father, Mike O’Shea, indicated that the injury ap-peared to be season-ending.

O’Shea was one of the Northwest 1A/2A Conference’s top rushers in the early going. He had 391 rush-ing yards and had accounted for 48 points for the Villains.

Week Five Game Coverage

By Kelly SnowContributing Writer

MOUNT AIRY — When West Stokes football coach Jimmy Upchurch gathered his team around him after celebrating one of the biggest wins in school history, he was quick to remind everyone that the season was still young and championship trophies weren’t ready to be handed out yet.

Not quite yet.But his Wildcats took a huge step

toward accomplishing their lofty preseason goal of being the new top dog of the Northwest 1A/2A by vanquishing four-time defending league champion Mount Airy, 17-6, Friday.

The game was the conference opener for both teams.

West Stokes (5-0 overall, 1-0 Northwest 1A/2A) snapped the Granite Bears’ (3-2, 0-1) streak of 31 consecutive conference victories — a run of dominance that stretches back to the 2006 season.

“Any team that’s able to come beat a team that’s got the reputation like Mount Airy especially on their home field is fortunate,” Upchurch said. “When you’ve won 31 straight games and you haven’t lost a game since 2006, at some point, all good things come to an end. There’s no doubt, they’ll bounce back. (Mount Airy coach Kelly Holder’s) a super coach with a super program. We haven’t won anything yet. Everyone in this conference is good. Anybody can beat anybody on any week.”

The Wildcats’ plodded their way to a 17-0 first-half lead behind a ball-control attack and stingy defensive effort. West Stokes outgained the reigning conference champions 179-14 in the first half, and took charge of the game with a 16-play, 85-yard drive that kept the Granite Bears’ defense on the field for a stretch of eight and a half minutes that spanned both quarters.

Wildcats’ quarterback Austin Fleming capped off the drive with a 7-yard run on

a bootleg. He added another touchdown later in the quarter on a sneak.

“They have a really great leader in (Fleming),” Holder said. “They have really good players and have more talent than anyone in our conference, but he’s the glue. They’re very fortunate to have a leader like that.”

Mount Airy closed the gap to 17-6

midway through the third quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by fullback Zaquan Dobson. The score was set up by a 46-yard sprint up the middle by running back Ty Simmons. Simmons led the Granite Bears with 53 yards on seven carries.

“We’ve never talked about the streak, it’s just been,” Holder said. “We don’t plan on losing conference games, it just happened. I like this team, we’re not overly talented, but I like them. They’re mine and I love them.”

Austin Long had a huge night for the Wildcats with 124 yards on 25 carries and an interception on defense that helped set up Brandon Starnes 23-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Turning point No. 1 — The Granite Bears trailed 14-0 and were trying to put some points on the board before halftime, but an interception followed by a long completion nearly put the game out of reach early. DeMarion Jones’ leaping grab over Taylor inside the 5-yard line set up a field goal as time expired before halftime. That huge pass was thrown by backup quarterback Grayson Cobb. That late kick extended the margin to 17-0 which proved a little too deep to come back from for Mount Airy.

Turning point No. 2 — Mount Airy was trying to mount a comeback early in the fourth quarter and was facing a third and short at the Wildcats’ 37-yard line. Granite Bears’ quarterback Austin Taylor faked the handoff, rolled to his right and was engulfed by linebacker Tyler Bullard. Bullard’s third sack of the game turned a certain four-down situation into a definite punt. That was the Granite Bears’ last good opportunity to score.

It was over when…West Stokes melted seven minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter with a 14-play march that ended in an interception. The Granite Bears got the ball back trailing by 11 with two minutes to play and were unable to mount a rally.

Week Five Game Coverage

By Eric LuskEditor

Wes Brown rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns, and Surry Central’s football team won in Pilot Mountain for the first time in 15 years Friday night.

Brown’s 14-yard carry over the left side with 1:33 left in the fourth quar-ter proved the game-clincher in Cen-tral’s 27-23 triumph. East Surry had just moved ahead 23-20 with 3:37 remaining on a 7-yard Mason Edwards touchdown pass to Dustin Holder.

Surry Central ended a 12-year foot-ball drought against East Surry last sea-son in Dobson. Friday’s victory gives the Eagles two straight against their county rivals and moves their record to 3-1 overall, 1-0 in Northwest 1A/2A Conference play. East Surry, which led 16-14 at the half, drops to 0-4. The Cards now have a seven-game losing skid dating back to last season.

“At the end of the first half, our offen-sive line started getting beat a little bit,” Surry Central coach Monty Southern said. “But in the second half, there was a group that really stepped it up. (Brown) just needs a little daylight to get those big feet going and then he’ll do the rest. The line did that for him.

“In the second half, we ran the ball pretty much when we needed to.”

East Surry suffered through a handful of close losses a year ago. Friday night, alas, proved more of the same.

Surry Central took a 20-16 lead late in the third period when Jesse Martin hit Jared Dimmette with a 6-yard touch-down pass.

East Surry responded with an 11-play drive into Surry Central territory, but the Cards couldn’t convert on fourth down. They got new life, though, when the Golden Eagles fumbled the ball at their own 31 with less than eight minutes to

play. This time, East Surry pounced, and

Mason Edwards hit Dustin Holder with a 7-yard scoring strike. The extra point from Trevor Simmons gave the homes-tanding Cardinals a 23-20 advantage.

East Surry kicked the ball short -- maybe to keep it out of Brown’s hands or other Surry Central standout kick re-turners. But the result gave the Golden Eagles possession at their own 40.

Jesse Martin kept for a five-yard gain, then Brown ripped off runs of 8, 24 and 8 yards into the East Surry red zone. The Cardinals called timeout with 2:03 left, but Surry Central scored on the next play. Brown charged past defenders and into the end zone.

“I feel real bad for my ball club. We’ve played hard every week and got-

ten better. We just can’t get over the hump,” East Surry coach David Di-amont said. “There are not many people in this league who have one person who can tackle a back that large.

Brown’s first touchdown was a 10-yard run in the opening quarter, giv-ing the Eagles a 14-6 lead at the time. Quarterback Jesse Martin rushed for a 25-yard score and threw a 6-yard TD pass to Jared Dimmette.

Rayshawn Moore had a 50-yard touchdown for East Surry late in the second quarter. Holder also threw a touchdown, turning a reverse play into a 30-yard strike to Andrew Johnson.

Surry Central will play host to Mount Airy on Friday. East Surry must go to West Stokes.

EAST BEND – Fresh off a waning seconds, heart-breaking loss at West Wilkes last week, Forbush came into Friday night’s Mountain Valley 1A/2A tilt with North Wilkes bound and determined not to let its homecoming crowd go away unhappy.

Paced by a ground game that saw two backs break the century mark and a defense that stymied the Vikings all evening, the Falcons rolled to their first victory of the season with a decisive 36-12 thumping on the visitors from Wilkes County.

“You know I don’t know if you could ever put a loss like that behind you,” Forbush coach Chris Johnson said of last week’s 14-13 defeat at West Wilkes. “But it was a real driving force for us all week. We knew we were just that close last week and we worked on making sure we did all the little things right to not let that happen again.”

And that they did. Forbush rode the one-two backfield punch of senior Brittan Baity and freshman Zach Chambers early and often in charging out to 16-0 lead. Baity churned out hard yardage early on, but it was Chambers who took it to paydirt for the Falcons’ first two touchdowns on runs of 54 and four yards, respectively.

For the night Baity led the way with 137 yards on 24 carries and a 45-yard touchdown run. He was complemented nicely by Chambers, who scored three touchdowns and gained 107 yards on just nine carries. As a team, Forbush

ended the night with 377 yards of total offense, with 258 coming on the ground.

But it was Baity who was all over the field on this night, throwing into his offensive effort several tackles on defense and a key second-half interception.

“He’s just our do it all player out there,” Johnson said. “He’s a very important player on both sides of the ball. He’s just a real special kid.”

It was a dominant night on the line that paved the way for the Falcons, as its

backs were granted a plethora of holes from which they could run through.

“Yeah, they definitely won the battle up front,” North Wilkes coach Dave Haynie said. “That’s a pretty good 0-4 team and we knew that coming in. We’ve just got to learn to play better up front if we’re going to win consistently.”

Johnson was quick to praise the efforts of his line.

“Those guys up front did it for us tonight,” he said. “We know we have to establish a (consistent) running game if we want to pass it more and we did that tonight.”

And the passing game from which Johnson referred showed great signs of improvement, as smooth throwing sophomore Bennett Winslow connected on 5-of-13 passes for 119 yards, including a nifty 47-yard toss to G.C. Parks late in the first half. Winslow’s numbers might have even been better if it weren’t for a few drops by his receivers who were hit square in the numbers.

“That little quarterback did a great job and hurt us at some key moments tonight,” Haynie said.

Defensively, Forbush held North Wilkes to just 189 yards of total offense, with 126 of those yards coming through the arm of Andrew Ayers who connected on 8 of 13 passes.

Forbush, now 1-4, 1-2, hopes to make it two in a row when it next travels up the mountain to take on Alleghany (1-4, 1-2) next Friday. North Wilkes (1-4, 0-3) plays host to county rival East Wilkes.

TOAST- North Surry used spectacular performances from seniors Alex Ratcliff and Jacob Pelfrey to get past visiting Bishop McGuinness 39-13 on Friday Night.

With fall air beginning to set in and temperatures in the upper 50’s at kickoff, Ratcliff and Pelfrey hooked up to the tune of four touchdown connections. Ratcliff, North Surry’s starting quarterback, finished the game 11-17 for 220 yards, while Pelfrey ended the night with eight catches for 170 yards.

Ratcliff not only got it done through the air but on the ground as well, ending with 13 carries for 201 yards and two more touchdowns.

“Those two guys are having something special going on right now,” North Surry coach Brian Hampton said. “I tell Alex all the time that we have other receivers on this team that are good, but the ball still seems to find Pelfrey’s hands, so it’s hard to say something when those two guys are playing the way they are right now.”

Early on, neither team was able to break through as each team’s first two drives were stalled. Finally late in the first quarter, North Surry (4-0, 1-0) opened up the scoring with Ratcliff connecting with Pelfrey on a 53-yard pass to put the Greyhounds up 7-0 (kick good).

After a four and out by Bishop (1-2, 0-1), the Greyhounds converted a six-play drive that covered 68 yards with a 24-yard strike from Ratcliff to Pelfrey to put the Greyhounds up 13-0 (kick no good).

With North Surry’s defense standing tall yet again, forcing the Villains to another four and out, Ratcliff would take it himself on a 32-yard quarterback keeper to put the Hounds up 19-0 (kick no good) going into

the break.Three plays into the second half, Bishop

quarterback Andrew Scheppegrell was picked off by Greyhound safety Josh Cox. The Greyhounds didn’t take long to convert the turnover into points as Ratcliff found Pelfrey yet again in the corner of the end zone to make it 25-0 (two-point conversion no good).

On the Villains next possession, Brian Jordan found the end zone on a 40-yard run down the sideline to cut the North lead to 25-7 (kick good).

The Greyhounds didn’t waste anytime matching the Villains’ touchdown with

Ratcliff hooking up with Pelfrey again for the fourth time with a 26-yard pitch and catch to put extend the lead to 32-7 (kick good).

Bishop wouldn’t go down without a fight. With the clock running down in the third quarter Greg Salomon found the end zone from eight yards out to cut the lead to 32-13 (two-point conversion no good).

Ratcliff put the icing on the cake midway through the fourth quarter with a 58-yard sprint down the middle of the field to give the Greyhounds the final advantage of 39-13 (kick good). North Surry has now won eight straight home games dating back to last season.

Even with the loss, Bishop McGuinness racked up more than 200 yards on the ground, led by Jordan’s 18 carries for 129 and a touchdown. Also chipping in on the ground was Salomon with eight carries for 55 yards and a touchdown.

North Surry senior running back Jason King pitched in with 12 carries for 88 yards.

Despite the win, North Surry was penalized 29 times for 153 yards.

“We have been penalized over 50 times over the past two games, that is something we can’t do going forward and expect to win games,” Hampton said. “Nonetheless, we got the win and it’s good to be 4-0, but we have a lot to work on next week to get better.”

Hampton wasn’t the only one disappointed in the amount of penalties on the Greyhounds. “We have a ton to work on next week, we were lucky tonight to get by with all the penalties, but that’s something we have to fix going forward,” added Ratcliff.

WEST JEFFERSON — So much for the notion that Starmount’s football team tends to struggle on chilly nights playing in the high country.

The Rams had little problems dispatching of Ashe County 51-14 in West Jefferson on Friday. Chaston Martin and Christian Hurt got things rolling in the opening quarter, turning runs of 49 and 64 yards into touchdowns.

Starmount built a 24-7 lead by halftime and tacked on 27 more points in the third period before gearing down the attack.

The Rams improved to 5-0 overall, 3-0 in Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference play heading into next week’s Battle of the Bridge game against Elkin. Ashe County dropped to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in the MVAC.

Ashe managed to pull within 14-7 early in the second period. Jeremy Caffey, one of the heroes in the Huskies’ win over Elkin last week, plunged in from the 2-yard line at the 10:20 mark of the quarter.

But Starmount had a pretty quick answer. Eugene Billips scored on a 17-yard run less than three minutes later. Allen Mendenhall booted a 19-

yard field goal right before the half to give the Rams a little more cushion.

Starmount blew it open early in the third. All-conference lineman Dillon Bray scooped up a fumble less than a minute into the second half and returned it 15 yards for a TD. Less than two minutes later, Christian

Hurt completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Fondae McDaniel.

McDaniel found the end zone twice more, on runs of 5 and 29 yards, to close out the third quarter scoring. A 74-yard Eli Gambill pass to Hawkens Flanagan provided the Huskies with one more score in the fourth period.

While Mount Airy saw the end of its 31-game conference winning streak on Friday against West Stokes, Starmount’s conference unbeaten run remains alive and well. The Rams have now been victorious in their last 28 conference games, dating back to 2007. Ashe County is the last team to beat them in conference play, when the two schools were part of the old Mountain Valley 2A.

Until Friday, recent trips to the mountains had been a bit harrowing for Starmount teams. The Rams survived a 2009 game at Alleghany with a 2-point win and only

beat Ashe by a touchdown that same season.

Starmount’s JV team beat Ashe County 62-6 on Thursday in Boonville. The Rams got three touchdowns from their defense, on pick-six plays.

Austin Long (West Stokes): Rushed for a team-high 119 yards on 24 carries against one of the better 1A defenses in the area. His longest run covered 22 yards. Defensively, Long picked off a pass, deflected another pass and was in on six tackles.

Grayson Cobb (West Stokes): Got the call to the bullpen and completed his only pass of the night, a 41-yarder to Demarion Jones.

Tyler Bullard (West Stokes): Had a monster night defensively for the Wildcats, recording three sacks and 12 total tackles (nine solos).

Wes Brown (Surry Central): Pounded his way for 180 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s win at East Surry. He scored on a 10-yard run in the opening quarter and then notched the game-clincher from 14 yards out late in the fourth quarter.

Jesse Martin (Surry Central): The co-pilot of the Eagles offense, along with Colby Chilton, carried for 80 yards and a touchdown. Martin’s touchdown run covered 25 yards. He also threw a 6-yard

TD strike to Jared Dimmette (who had some nice runs himself, finishing with 45 yards on the night).

Rayshawn Moore (East Surry): Gave the Cardinals’ offense a jolt with 111 rushing yards on 12 carries. He had a 50-yard touchdown run in the opening half.

Ryan Simmons (East Surry): Made 11 tackles to lead the Cardinals’ defense, including nine solo efforts.

Alex Ratcliff (North Surry): Earned another game ball for another banner performance, throwing four touchdown passes. Ratcliff was 11-for-17 for 220 yards through the air and added another 201 yards on the ground, scoring twice more. His rushing touchdowns covered 32 and 58 yards.

Jacob Pelfrey (North Surry): Caught all four of Ratcliff’s touchdown tosses. The scoring plays covered 22, 24, 26 and 22 yards. For the night, Pelfrey made eight catches for 170 yards.

Brian Jordan (Bishop McGuinness): Stepped in for injured running back Patrick O’Shea and scored on a 40-yard run in the third quarter. Jordan finished with 18 carries for 129 yards.

Jason King (North Surry): In addition to his line backing duties, King rushed for 88 yards to compliment the strong performance of Ratcliff and Pelfrey.

Dustin Triplett (Wilkes Central): Rushed for 138 yards on 16 carries to lead the Eagles to another lopsided victory. Triplett also scored on the defensive end, returning a fumble 55 yards to the end zone. This was Triplett’s fourth time breaking the 100-yard rushing plateau in five tries. He now has 667 rushing yards for the season.

Chris Watt (Wilkes Central): Had two sacks on the defensive end and scored three touchdowns when the Eagles had the ball. Watt rushed for 79 yards total on nine attempts and caught a TD pass from Calvin Shomaker that covered 15 yards.

Chasey Caul (Wilkes Central): Led the Eagles with 10 tackles, including six solo hits. He’s a big reason why Wilkes Central’s defense has only surrendered eight points in the last three ball games, including 11 straight scoreless quarters. Caul also got two carries offensively and turned one into a 23-yard touchdown run.

Grant Caudill and Ryan Billings (Alleghany): Helped the Trojans avoid being Wilkes Central’s third straight shutout victim. Caudill hit Billings on a 35-yard touchdown play late in the

game to put Alleghany on the board. Tyler Woods (West Wilkes):

Pounded East Wilkes to the tune of 164 rushing yards, a season high. He scored on a 62-yard run on the Blackhawks’ first series.

West Wilkes defense: Held what is traditionally a solid rushing team (East Wilkes) to just 99 total yards.

Eli Gambill and Hawkens Flanagan (Ashe County): Hooked up for a 74-yard touchdown in the fourth period against Starmount.

Fondae McDaniel (Starmount): Put some icing on the Rams’ big win at Ashe County with touchdown runs of 5 and 29 yards in the third period. McDaniel also caught a TD pass.

Chaston Martin (Starmount): Got the scoring started for the Rams with a 49-yard touchdown scamper in the game’s opening minutes.

Christian Hurt (Starmount): Galloped 64 yards for a touchdown in the first period and threw a 28-yard TD pass to Fondae McDaniel.

Zach Worley (Starmount): Recovered three fumbles for the Rams, returning one for a touchdown.

Brittan Baity (Forbush): Broke

loose for 137 rushing yards on 24 carries, including a 45-yard TD run, helping the Falcons earn their first win of the season.

Zach Chambers (Forbush): Freshman back broke the 100-yard plateau for the first time (of what could be many times over the next four years?). Chambers finished with 107 yards on nine totes, recording three touchdowns on runs of 54, 4 and 20 yards.

G.C. Parks (Forbush): Hauled in a 47-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bennett Winslow late in the second quarter. The score helped the Falcons build a 22-6 lead at the time. Winslow completed 119 yards worth of throws and might have had several more yards except for drops.

Andrew Ayers and Randy Pruitt (North Wilkes): Connected on a 36-yard scoring play in the opening half against Forbush. Ayers finished with 126 yards passing on the night. Pruitt caught two passes for 57 yards.
