The dark bay fillyis coming off a 7 1/2-length maiden victory at FairGrounds Jan. 24. AI=ve only had her a few weeks,@ saidtrainer Kathy Walsh. AShe=s doing well and she workedFriday in 1:11 4/5.@ Also expected for the Santa AnitaOaks, Cozie Rosie (Pleasantly Perfect) worked sevenfurlongs on Pro-Ride Sunday in1:28.20 and Crisp (ElCorredor) went six furlongs at Hollywood in 1:12.

SALVE GERMANIA RETURNS THURSDAY Salve Germania (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), winner of lastyear=s GII Ballston Spa H. at Saratoga, will return toaction Thursday at Gulfstream Park. The five-year-old

mare was sold to IEAH Sta-bles after the Ballston Spaand transferred to the barn ofTodd Pletcher. She has notraced since running fifth inthe GI E. P. Taylor S. atWoodbine Oct. 17. SalveGermania is one of 12 filliesand mares entered for Thurs-

Now trained by ChristopheClement, the four-year-old filly captured a French listedstakes for Clement=s brother Nicholas. Presious Passion Wins Mac Diarmida (cont. from p1) Presious Passion, who won the 2009 Mac Diarmida, used his dashing front-running tactics to score victoriesin last year=s GI United Nations S. at Monmouth Parkand GI Clement L Hirsch H. He very nearly stole the GI Breeders= Cup Turf, coming up just a half-lengthshort of Conduit (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), before endingthe year with a fifth-place effort in the Dec. 26 GII W. L.McKnight H. at Calder. The seven-year-old gelding hadworked only once since that effort, but that wasn=t aconcern for trainer Mary Hartmann. AHe only had theone workout since his last race, but as they get olderthey don=t need to do as much,@ Hartmann said. AIt=sbecome his pattern.@ Everything went perfectly in therace, according to winning rider Elvis Trujillo. AThehorse broke sharp and was very relaxed, and that wasvery good for the horse,@ Trujillo said. AEvery time hegoes right to the lead, and you just hope things goeasy. Then at the three-eighths, you put him in the bit,and he just goes on. [The turf] was perfect today. There were no problems.@

Fruit of the Vine... In 2005, Vinery established a breaking and trainingfacility in Summerfield, Florida, to go along with a bur-geoning stallion operation. Ian Brennan, who spentabout 10 years working for his brother, prominentconsignor Niall Brennan, was tabbed as the farm=strainer.

AHe does a fantastic job,@ bloodstockagent Mike Ryan said of Ian Brennan. AHeworked for his dad in Ireland, he workedfor the Aga Khan and Liam Brown, andat Kildangan Stud, and then he cameover to work for Niall. It was a naturalprogression--I knew ultimately he wouldgo do his own thing. Vinery asked me torecommend someone, and I told them,>Here's your guy.' He's very, very goodat what he does. He and his staff do agreat job.@ With 100 stalls, a seven-furlong dirt

track and a six-furlong turf course, as well as anaquaciser, the Summerfield base has much appeal. Thispast September, Vinery announced that they wouldbegin consigning at juvenile sales on their clients= be-half. AWe probably have 25 percent of our clients whosehorses go to the two-year-old sales,@ ex-plained Vinery President Tom Ludt. AIthink our breaking operation in Florida isone of the best. Since we=re doing mostof the work, we figured it=s just anotherway to service our clients. In the past, there were horses coming off our farmthat had been prepped for the two-year-old sales and were shipped right to theconsignor at the sales grounds. We justthought it was something we shouldbranch out into and offer the product our-selves.@ The national economic downturn in the last 18months has had a significant impact on auction returns, but that didn=t affect Vinery=s decision to enter themarket as a consignor this year.

AThe reality of the matter is that we don=t have anycontrol over the timing,@ Ludt said. AThis is a businessdecision as we=ve developed our farm [in Florida].@ He added, AThese are our clients= horses--we are notselling Vinery horses. The horses that we buy at year-ling sales, we buy to race. This is just a service to theclients. It=s strictly horses that came to us to break andtrain. Whether they decided in the beginning or decidedmore recently to put them in a sale, it=s just an optionto provide that service for them.@ The Vinery draft contains a number of noteworthyindividuals, including hip 5, a Speightstown half-sisterto Grade I winner and Eclipse Award finalist Hot DixieChick (Dixie Union); hip 75, a Gone West colt out of ahalf-sister to top sire Elusive Quality (Gone West); hip100, a Pulpit colt from the immediate family of Horse ofthe Year Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d=Oro); and hip122, a Giant=s Causeway half-sister to multiple Grade Iwinner Henny Hughes (Hennessy). ASome of the pedigrees jump out at you,@ Ludt said ofthe Vinery consignment. AObviously, that=s what youwant, but then you need thegoods to back it up, and I thinkwe=ve got that potential. Atthese first two-year-old sales, you really don=t know whatyou=ve got until the last day, because we=re going to be care-ful with these horses. A lot ofthese horses haven=t even been squeezed that hard. AWe=ve got a really nice group of horses,@ Ludt contin-ued. AHopefully, they=ll be towards the top of the sale, whatever that turns out to be. We=ll consult with [ourclients] as we get through the breeze show and theshowings to see what kind of reserves they want.@Cont. p6

A majority of the 13-horse consignment is affiliatedwith Mike Ryan Bloodstock. Though Ryan typically sells

exclusively with his friend and partnerof 20 years, Niall Brennan, he opted tosell a few through Vinery due to thelarge number of his and Brennan=syoungsters accepted to this sale.Ryan=s juveniles at OBS March andKeeneland will be consigned by NiallBrennan.

The Vinery horses have been showing steadily to awide variety of prospective buyers. There were somebright spots at OBS February, and Ludt hopes the trendcontinues this Tuesday. AYou know, I was quite surprised at the first two-year-old sale,@ he said. AThere were some very nice, expensive horses sold. I think a good racehorse with agood pedigree is still going to bring a lot of money, butwe=ll find out.@ --MK

New Kid on the Block... A familiar face at the sales barns, but consigning atCalder for the first time, is Rebecca Hayden. The Or-lando native has been busy showing her four prospectsto interested parties, and is optimistic that they=ll bewell received when they step into the auction ringTuesday. AI was very pleased with the breeze show,@ Hayden

said. AI think the horses went well, and I was thrilled with the way thateverything turned out.@ Among Hayden=s group is hip 53, aCozzene filly who is a half-sister tograded stakes winner Western Smoke(Smoke Glacken). The grey filly, a$135,000 KEESEP purchase, breezedan eighth in :10 2/5 Friday. Haydenwill also lead over hip 58, a ForestWildcat filly that fetched $270,000 at

KEESEP. The granddaughter of Grade I winner GoldenTreat (Theatrical {Ire}) did her drill in :10 3/5. AHer sister ran third in [the Dearly Precious S.] a cou-ple of weeks ago at Aqueduct, so she=s got some up-dates,@ Hayden offered. AShe=s a really nice filly.@ Hayden grew up riding and showing horses. Afterattending college for a year, she opted to get some real-life schooling by working for prominent pinhookers DonGraham and Murray Smith. Cont. p7

AI worked for Don Graham for about three or fouryears, coming down to Calder for the two-year-oldsales,@ Hayden revealed. AAnd Murray has been a greatmentor. I learned a lot from both of them. Obviously, they=re both very experienced in the business, and itwas a great opportunity for me.@ Hayden went out on her own several years ago, buying weanlings and reselling them as yearlings. AOf course, my parents said >You=re never going tomake any money in the horse business,=@ she recalled.ABut I kept being persistent. I got really lucky and had afew good years selling some yearlings, and here I am.@ She added, AI feel like this has been my college edu-cation. I was just adamant about going to every sale; Ilooked at it as an investment in my future. Since this iswhat I wanted to do, the more sales I went to, themore I learned.@ Hayden, now based at Eclipse Training Center, soldher first two-year-olds at OBS last spring, and went toKentucky to look for her next group of prospects. AI enjoy training and breaking them and getting themready,@ she said. AI like a horse that has the right angles--the ones that have the nice long, deep shoulder, longhips and good hind legs. I like to see them have a goodwalk and be fluid in their action.@ Three of the four horses Hayden has were purchasedin the name of Tom Van Meter=s Stockplace. ATom and I partnered on these horses together,@ sheexplained. AHe=s been really good to me. Originally Ilooked for horses for him and shortlisted a few at theSeptember sale. We put a plan together, and this iswhere we are. He=s a really great guy, and I couldn=task for a better partner.@ It=s been a rough 18 months for the racehorse mar-ket, but Hayden remains optimistic. AI think everybody has had their ups and downs,@ shepointed out. AI love this game, and I hope I can continuedoing it. I=ve got great people around me that helpsupport me, and I=ve got nice horses. Good horses stillsell well.@ Hayden=s consignment is in Barn 77, just on the otherside of the shedrow from her former boss, MurraySmith. AShe=s a lovely girl and works very hard,@ Smith saidof her one-time employee. AShe=s got some nice horseshere, and I=m proud of her. I think she=s going to do justfine.@ --MK

F-T Racing Club Kicks Off... Standing trackside Friday during a sun-soaked butchilly breeze show, Fasig-Tipton=s Bayne Welker heldcourt on the Calder Racecourse apron. In attendance

were 16 neophytesto the Thoroughbredbusiness. Theycrowded around, many with a coldbeer or cocktail inhand, and listened asWelker explained thevagaries of two-year-old in training sales. This is what thismeans, that=s whatthat means--no, yes, that horse moveswell, that one lessso, etc. Class was beingconducted for the

benefit of members of the Fasig-Tipton Racing Club.Officially launched New Year=s Day, the FTRC is a newventure sponsored by Fasig-Tipton that hopes to drawnew people into the business. In total, 26 membersown shares in four FTRC horses.

The first of the horses, Bialy (Distorted Humor), racedfor the club on Valentine=s Day. The three-year-oldTodd Pletcher trainee got the operation off to a goodstart with a close-up second-place finish as the favoritein her second career start, a six-furlong maiden specialweight at Gulfstream. In some ways, the club operates like a traditionalsyndicate--a group of like-minded people come togetherto divide the risk of Thoroughbred ownership while alsosharing its inherent thrills. The FTRC is different, how-ever, in that the horses the members invest in areleased, not purchased outright. The term of the lease isone year, at which point the horses will be returned totheir original owners. Because of the short lease period, and because theywant members to have a positive experience, they haveopted to lease horses with at lease some proven form. All four horses in the syndicate had made at least oneprior start for their original owners before being leased.By contrast, most racing partnerships in the U.S. ac-quire unraced horses, either at the yearling or two-year-old in training sales.Cont. p.9

Handicappers may have noticed, for instance, thatBialy made her first start not for FTRC, but for KennyTroutt and Bill Casner=s WinStar Farm, which bred thefilly. Bialy was well-regarded in her first start forWinStar at Churchill last November, running a goodsecond as the 5-2 choice in a maiden special weight.Despite that auspicious debut, WinStar agreed to leaseBialy to FTRC to help get the venture off the ground. Likewise, the other three horses in the FTRC wereleased by big-name operations. From Darley Stablecame two horses, the six-year-old gelding Ea(Dynaformer) and the four-year-old colt Majestic Blue(Forestry). The former has been a hard-knocking sortwho placed second in last year=s lucrative Charles TownClassic. He has not yet started for the FTRC. MajesticBlue, a first-out winner at Saratoga as a juvenile, fin-ished fifth in a Gulfstream allowance race in his firststart for the FTRC Feb. 24. Katy Moore, who manages the FTRC alongside assis-tant manager Reed Ringler, says that the club is a sortof Agraduate program into Thoroughbred ownership.@ She explained, AWhen the horses are running, theyget to come down and go to the paddock, talk to thetrainers, meet the jockeys, etc. It=s as much for theeducation and for the social atmosphere as it is justputting together a racing syndicate. At Fasig-Tipton, wehave the Calder two-year-old sale, we have Kentuckyand, obviously, Saratoga in August, and because ofthat we=re in a very good position to showcase the bestracing and the best sales, and give them a good experi-ence. Hopefully, they=ll have developed a passion forracing by that point and go into a bigger syndicate, orthey=ll go and buy horses on their own.@ Another difference between FTRC and other partner-ships is that the club itself is not being operated toproduce any sort of profit for Fasig-Tipton; in fact, thecompany is paying all the managing expenses. All train-ing and vet expenses are paid out of the member=s one-time initial investment. Any purse earnings are sharedbetween FTRC members and the original owner. The FTRC is taking advantage of Fasig-Tipton=s Cal-der sale, as well as last Saturday=s Fasig-Tipton FillyFestival at Gulfstream. Those 16 members at the breezeshow flew in to enjoy an extended weekend of warmweather, great racing and exciting sales action and, well, two out of three ain=t bad. AWe brought them to the breeze show, we took themto dinner in Miami Friday night, then we took them toPalm Meadows Saturday morning to see all four horses, meet the trainers, watch the horses at the track, andsee that side of the business,@ explained Moore.

AWe took them to Gulfstream Park for the party in thepaddock Saturday, all the while introducing them topeople in the industry--bloodstock agents, trainers, other owners and whatnot--so they could get an idea ofwhat it=s like, and who they might be comfortable withif they went out on their own. Then on Sunday morn-ing, Dennis Lynch conducted a conformation clinic. We=re fortunate with Fasig to have these brilliant mindsto educate our members throughout the year, and we=redefinitely taking advantage of that.@ The brainchild behind the Racing Club--though some-what bashful to admit it--is Moore herself, who previ-ously worked with Castleton Lyons. In November of2008, Moore brought an idea to Fasig she=d developedwhile working abroad in Australia and Japan. AThey do a lot of syndicates over there, but they=rebig--it=s not just a little group,@ she said. AIt=s affordable,it=s fun. Some of them are leasing syndicates, especiallyin Japan. They have something like 70,000 people inracing syndicates in Japan, and I think there=s not even15 racing clubs. So I was think, gosh, why don=t we domore of that here? The timing was perfect, with Syn-ergy purchasing Fasig-Tipton and being very supportiveof the idea, though it wasn=t like it was a new idea orconcept or anything. But, for some people, it=s a greatlow-risk, entry-level introduction to racing.@ -LM
