Trump, announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims of the tragedy in Vir- ginia Beach, Virginia. Flags will be flown at half-staff until sunset on June 4, 2019. The officers who confronted an alleged gunman during a mass shooting in a packed Virginia Beach municipal building helped prevent even more bloodshed. Twelve people were shot to death and four others were injured in Friday’s rampage, allegedly carried out by a disgruntled employee. But officials praised the responding officers who engaged the alleged shooter, DeWayne Craddock, 40, in a “long- term, large gunfight.” “There is one thing that is most evident that has come about: We in Virginia Beach are a city of heroes,” Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dwyer said at a news conference Saturday afternoon. FIRST SESSION On Friday, Governor Pete Ricketts highlighted the results of the First Session of the 106th Legislature in his annual “Sine Die” address to the Unicameral on the final day of its 2019 session. During the address the Governor praised Senators for taking action to aid Nebraskans af- fected by flooding, citing the Legislature’s provision of property tax relief for natural disaster victims and its allocation of $11 million to the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund. “Our work to help Nebraskans overcome the devastation of flooding illustrates the power of working together,” Governor Ricketts said. “When we pull together, we can do great things. The recovery is ongoing, but we are on a good path to rebuilding bigger and better than before.” He also commended the Legislature for other key results from the session: Approving a budget for the 2019-2021 biennium and controlling spending to under 3%, Including important budget priorities such as K-12 education and public safety initiatives, Voting down attempts to raise sales taxes on Nebras- kans, Passing LB 103 to stop automatic property tax increases, Increas- ing the Property Tax Credit Relief Fund by $51 million for a total of $550 million in direct property tax relief to Nebraskans over the next two years and merging state agencies to create the Department of Environment and Energy. BLUE AND GOLD HONOR CORDS A total of 321 area high school seniors earned the right to wear blue and gold honor cords from Mid-Plains Community College at their graduation ceremonies this spring. That’s up from 260 seniors last year and 225 seniors in 2017. Becky Barner, MPCC area career coach, said a number of factors have contributed to the increase. “Since we started distributing cords a couple years ago, we’ve had a lot of high school students who make it their goal to receive that cord upon graduation,” said Barner. “The college also has made it a point to be flexible about the delivery of college classes and increasing the number of classes available through online and distance learning methods - making them more accessible to high school students. In addition, high schools are making it a priority to get their high school staff qualified and ap- proved to teach college-level courses, which means those teachers can teach college classes right in their own high schools.” The purpose of the cords is to recognize students who have taken the initiative to pursue college credit while still in high school. To earn a cord, students must have successfully completed 12 or more credit hours of college classes through MPCC. SPORTS The Nebraska baseball team (32-24) fell to UConn, 16-1, in an NCAA Regional elimination game at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on

Sunday afternoon. The Huskers, making their fourth NCAA Tourna-ment appearance in the last six years, saw their 2019 season come to an end after going 1-2 at the Oklahoma City Regional. It marked Nebraska’s 16th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history,

and 13th appearance in the last 21 years. The North squad used a strong start and finish on its way to a 32-10 wins over the South in the 61st annual Shrine Bowl. Thanks to touchdown runs from Cooper Jewett (Elkhorn South) and Trenton

Harbur (Gothenburg) the North grabbed an early 12-0 lead before the South responded with a 54 yard touchdown strike from Kear-ney’s Brayden Miller to Baily Darnell of Auburn to briefly cut the lead to 12-7 in the second quarter. The North then countered with

an 80 yard drive right before half as Carter Terry (Northwest) hit Shane Dailey Jr from 14 yards out (Bellevue West) to go up 18-7. In the third quarter, the South connected on a 37 yard field goal from Gane Heins of Kearney to pull within 18-10 going into the fourth

quarter. In the final 12 minutes, the North retook control of the game as Terry hit Alex Rodgers (Roncalli) with a 12 yard pass and then Jewett scored his second td of the game on a 30 yard run to put the game out of reach. Terry who is headed Chadron State to play football was 13-20 through the air for 152 yards and a two tds.

Rodgers who was named the Offensive player of the game had 17 carries for 78 yards. The North offense put up 366 yards in the game, while limiting the South to 149. Braden Sellon of Lincoln East had eight solo tackles and was named the Defensive player of the

game. 15 future Nebraska Cornhuskers were involved in this year’s game.

INTERESTING FACT

Calling “shotgun” when riding in a car comes from the term “shotgun

messenger” which was used to refer to the guard who sat next to the

Stagecoach driver. The guards would use a shotgun to keep robbers and criminals away. It made its way into society due to Hollywood’s love of

Western flicks.
