An educationist with a vision, a social entrepreneur and a mother to over 40,000 children, she has redefined education as we see it. As Amity sets another benchmark with CBSE 2016 results, GT engages in an exclusive interview with the woman who made it all happen. Congratulations for the stupendous results. What is the secret of Amity’s success? I feel proud to share that my Amitians have sur- passed the previous year’s academic results, each year. This has all been possible because I love my work. And if you love doing some- thing, then you will always get positive re- sults. It’s because I love my children that I ensure they get the best possible edu- cational facilities. From developing customised question papers, hold- ing special classes for clearing doubts, organising counseling sessions to making teachers available round the clock, I ensure that the students get all they need for a conducive learning en- vironment. Rakshit Malik from AIS Noida aced in the disabled cate- gory. Does Amity lay special emphasis on special children? For me, each and every Amitian is special. As for the specially abled children, we have many at Amity who study alongside other children and are doing extremely well. Students with special needs are often more sensitive. Hence, we take great care to ensure that their needs are taken care of in an inconspicuous manner. Whether it is organising special assignments, or working in close proximity with their par- ents for regular updates of their progress, there is a personal touch in everything. The fact that Rakshit achieved this feat without taking any extra coaching classes makes me feel even more proud. The number of 10 CGPA holders in Amity has been consistently increasing over the years. Who do you attribute this feat to? The journey of Amity from 399 10 CGPA hold- ers in 2012 when the CCE was introduced, to 671 students achieving a perfect score in 2016 is indeed phenomenal. All this has been possi- ble only due to the consistent efforts of my staff, teachers and students who have put in their best efforts. I would also like to thank the parents for always keeping faith in Amity. Soumya Sharma from AIS Saket topped IIT entrance in Delhi. Are you satisfied with Ami- tians’ performance in the competitive arena? It was ten years ago, while I was visiting one of my schools that I noticed that there was very thin attendance in senior classes. On enquiring, I realised that students had to miss classes to at- tend coaching for competitive exams. So I in- troduced Synchro Study programme in schools that prepares children for both medical/engi- neering entrance as well as CBSE, under one roof. Today my children are able to perform and show outstanding results in CBSE and competitive exams without taking any extra stress or home tuitions. Amity bagged laurels at the recently con- cluded Euro Fest and INSEF. How do you manage to achieve this balance between aca- demics and extra-curriculars? I want my Amitians to be ‘exciting children’ ie a good balance of both academics and ex- tracurricular activities. The moment you step out of school and appear for interviews, the first thing people will take note of is your marks. But thereafter what matters is your behaviour, conduct and work performance, which one learns with participation in varied activities. Hence, at Amity, I have taken special care to ensure that there is something for everyone. We have Amity’s Children Science Foundation (CSF) that caters to hone students’ scientific acumen, Amity Educational Resource Centre (AERC) provides opportunities to partake in global programmes. The Global Times, Amity’s registered newspaper, nurtures journalistic skills; Amity Career Counselling & Guidance Cell (ACCGC) guides students through career counseling workshops. True to our insignia, ‘We nurture talent’ in every way possible. Where do you see Amity 10 years from now? My vision for Amitians is very clear. I can see them engaged in every possible field, emerging as responsible decision makers. Today, our alumni are placed in the best companies across the world. 10 years from now, I would still look forward to the work done by my Amitians to- wards achieving their school’s mission and vi- sion, as shared by Founder President, Dr Ashok K. Chauhan, ie, ‘nation building through edu- cation and beyond’. I’m proud of my Amitians and I’m confident that wherever they go, they will work for the welfare of their country. What’s for class?Education & Enhancement

Student-o-pedia:A little knowledge never hurts! That’s what this subject is about. More like a generalknowledge session, students from different classes cancome together and debate and discuss various topics andsubjects. Not only you get to know others’ views, butalso improve your knowledge all the way.

Filmy gyan: Who does not like movies? Thissubject would offer immense scope to learn the basicsof camera work along with discussing quality cinema.

Laughterography: This subject will be an instanthit as most students are class clowns by default andexperts in mimicking. Students can be taught to laugh atlife and tackle their problems, with a joke. Homeworkcould be as amusing as reading jokes or enacting anamusing script.

Needlestry: What if one morning a button comesoff your lucky shirt? Change at the last minute? It isyour lucky shirt! You cannot do that. What do you do?Sew of course! Having compulsory sewing classes forall students will help them learn a life skill. Besides, sewing is known to have quite a few benefits like im-

proving hand - eye coordination, relieving mental stress, enhancing motor skills and stimulating creativity.

Greyology: How cool will it be to become a bit moreclever and smarter than you are right now? You mightnot exactly become Einstein, but there is no harm tryingto be one. There are several life hacks and techniqueswhich can help improve your memory. Like learning anew language or a skill or solving a Math problem infive easy steps. Moving away from boring lectures, stu-dents can be exposed to tried and tested hacks to be bet-ter and more efficient at anything.

Cook-o-graphy: Whether you are a boy or a girl, cooking is something that will save your life. After all,Maggi cannot remain your companion forever. Learninghow to cook can make things easier for you. With moreand more students staying away from home for higherstudies and jobs, knowing how to cook even the basicdal chawal can save a student tons of money and stom-ach upsets. Also, cooking’s actually fun. With the view to keep faculty members up-dated about latest teaching pedagogy andtechniques, various enrichment initiatives

are undertaken. One such initiative was the Faculty En-richment Programme (FEP) organised by Amity Insti-tute of Education, AUUP on ‘New B.Ed Curriculum:Possibilities and Challenges’ on April 26, 2016. Theprogramme was inaugurated with the lighting of thelamp by resource persons and participants. The FEP was divided into three technical sessions on‘Reading and Reflection on Text’, ‘Language AcrossCurriculum’ and ‘Childhood and Growing up’. Themorning session was facilitated by Prof (Dr) KanwalBawa Bhalla, director, Amity Institute of English Re-search & Studies (AIERS). She stressed on the param-eters of reflection and the strategies of reading. She

eiterated the need to instill the SQ3Rs- Survey, Ques-tion, Read, Recall and Review among readers. The afternoon session commenced with a lecture on‘Language Across Curriculum’ by Dr Sonika Kaushik, senior consultant from NCERT. She emphasised on thefunctions of language and the need for planning. Shehighlighted the importance of integrating language andcontent learning to enhance learning outcome. The board results are out. Almost every-one seems to have scored the coveted90% and above. Gaining admission into

DU - the dream college for many, is not a cakewalk. The disappointment slowly creeps in, youbrace for the end of the world. But there’s onething in this entire catastrophe that you mayhave missed out on….that DU is neither theonly nor the last university on this planet.

Cut-offs: Higher than the Eiffel Ever since 2012, the cut off for some of theprestigious colleges in DU has soared to 100%,this year being no exception. This stands instark contrast to foreign universities that havecut-offs ranging between 85% -86%.

DU: Yet not on the mapWith such soaring cut-offs, you expect the ed-ucational institution to be just as good. But isit? If international rankings are anything to go

by, Delhi University might be the most soughtafter educational institution in the country, butit enjoys little acclaim on foreign shores. In fact,it has been ranked between 421-430 worldwide.

Not the end: Look beyond Admissions to DU have a sole criterion: themarks that you secure in your senior secondaryexamination. On the other hand, there are sev-eral private and foreign universities that havemore comprehensive criteria for admissions. In-terviews, personality tests, aptitude tests and awhole lot of other things determine whether ornot you will make the final cut.

PS: This is not a DU shamming article. DelhiUniversity has been and will continue to be oneof the most revered institutions in the country. It has given us stalwarts in various fields whohave brought glory to the nation. This is onlyto affirm that if you have not made it to DU, itis not the end of the world. There are variousother opportunities out there, only if youbroaden your horizons.

Are you one of those students who have 99 problems and DU isone of them? Funny isn’t it? Though its cut-off is as high as100%, why is it still not in the list of top 100 universities?

Where we went

Cookology, a cooking class in DullesTown Centre, US

What we learnt

In the class, we learnt to measure, mixand roll different food items. The cheftaught us to cook fruit pizza in a verysimple way. We diced various fruitslike banana, kiwi, strawberry and blue-berry according to the chef’s instruc-

tions. Then, we spread a light syrup onthe pizza base. Next, we added thediced fruits on the top. After the fruitswere arranged, the pizza was baked at177 degree celsius. And soon, theyummy fruit pizza was ready to eat!

How we felt

Learning to cook pizza was fun. Weenjoyed a lot in the class, as we inter-acted with children from differentbackgrounds. Sharing our culture andviews with them, was a unique experi-ence which we will never forget.

Once upon a time, in a remote vil-lage in West Bengal, lived ayoung boy named Goopy. He

loved to sing. But unfortunately, Goopywas a bad singer; so bad that his peoplewould make fun of him.Tired of his terrible singing, one day, thevillagers decided to pull a prank onGoopy. They asked him to practice onthe hill next to the king’s castle. Theytold him that if the king hears him, hemight just be rewarded. Goopy was veryhappy with the idea. He did just as told. But his poor singing distracted the king, who ordered that Goopy be thrown outof the village. Goopy had no choice butto live in the forest nearby.

One day while wandering in the forest,Goopy heard the sound of drums. As hemoved towards the sound, he metBagha. He too had a similar story asGoopy. He loved to play drums but thevillagers hated his music. Both of themteamed up and started performing to-gether. They formed quite a duo! Suchwas the strength of their music, that allthe ghosts in the forest turned into theirfans. The king of ghosts was so enam-oured by their music that he grantedthem three magical powers – they couldcreate food anywhere simply by clap-ping their hands; they could travel any-where by using a pair of magical slippersand they could mesmerise people with

their music. The duo used their magicalpowers to solve others’ problems. Bothof them eventually moved to a villagecalled Gaya where the king appointedthem as musicians of the court. One day, the king of Shundi, a neigh-bouring village, declared war on Gaya.Goopy and Bagha decided to prevent thewar. Both of them reached the battlefield, where the war was being fought. WhileBagha played drums, Goopy sang, mes-merising the soldiers. Soon, the twostarted clapping and it began to rainsweets. The soldiers got so engrossed ineating the sweets that they forgot allabout the war. The war was averted andthe two were rewarded by the king.Goopy and Bagha’s unbearable musichad finally brought good results.

a dynamic leader like Dr (Mrs) Amita Chauhan. She not just had the vision of creating a worldclass educational institute but also the courage totransform it into reality by givingto the world, the Amity Groupof Schools. To celebrate thebirthday of the visionary,

AIS PV organised ‘Prerna Diwas’ in the schoolpremises. It began with the students invoking theblessings of the Almighty. The session was fol-lowed by a performance by the students on‘Koshish karne walon ki kabhi haar nahi hoti’, apoem by Harivansh Rai Bachchan, which chair-

person herself sang along with the children. She inspired the children to have a vision and

work consistently towards realising it.G T

‘Where modernity blendswith tradition’ goes the

Calendar of an Amitian

From the pujari with a smartphone to the Lamborghini with anazarbattu, from making way for the cow on the road to the cowmaking way for news and debates, from watching Doordarshanon an LCD to a Ramlila performance going 3D, India is a

land of peculiarity; peculiarity of diversity, integrity, fraternity, modernity and more. This IndependenceDay, capture this unique spirit of our country that

would make all utter, “It happens only in India!”

The other day my uncle asked me, “When is your birthday?” “Itis clashing with the Youth Power Finale this year,” was myprompt reply. It is not surprising how the life of an

Amitian follows a different cycle, a calendar that is markedby myriad buzzing events encompassed by the redbricked building. Let’s take a look at the seasons andreasons that make the Amity calendar the most eventful one of all.

March-April-May

While we are still dealing with the exhilarationof a new class and a new session, the YuvaVichar Manch trials further elates us. Fromnail biting interviews to the joys of being as-signed posts that reiterate self-confidence,the two days are action packed with no lessa spectacle than that in the parliament. Shop-ping for formals? Check. Dethroning?Check. Resignation? Check. Strikes? Supercheck. Check and check. And then, suddenly you see a bunch of stu-dents who are everywhere in the school, sometimes practicing a speech in the canteen, sometimes a dance in the auditorium, sweatingmore because of hard work than summers. Asthe year long journey of Youth Power reaches itsapex, so does the level of excitement and antici-pation. This is one event which brings the entireschool together for a cause and it is now that youmake the final cut (or not? Oh the frenzy).

July-August-September

This time of the year witnesses the brainiest ones in action; theones who would be found mostly on their toes coming up withmind boggling projects for Vasudha and Mathamity. Exhibitions, tech-nologies worth patenting, an overload of innovation, so much so that youmight feel you are at NASA.

Next arrive Amity’s own Oscars, the GT Awards, the highlight event forevery student associated with GT (which is basically every Amit-

ian). From bets on nominations to ‘jugaads’ for attending it,the event is grand and gleeful. And suddenly all your plans

are rescheduled, mostly as ‘post GT Awards’. Sure, theawards take place in the beginning of the month, but

the hangover lasts forever (or for a month to saythe least).

October-November-December

Come October and the Founder’s Day cel-ebrations get us working on the most cre-ative ways to celebrate the Amitylegacy besides polishing our marchingdrill skills. All those hours spent in thescreeching sunlight count as FounderSir announces your marching drill tobe the best. Then comes AIMUN, three days ofexcitement, epiphany and endlessfun. It is perhaps the most star stud-ded affair at Amity with interna-tional delegations, highly acclaimeddignitaries and smiling Amitians on

the guest list (and many others tryingto make it there). “Yar tu Secretariat

mein hai, dost ko AIMUN nahi lejayega?” - that’s how direly everyone

wants to be a part of this event.

January-February

So the calendar is approaching its end and a seaof emotions take over. Many who have been rac-

ing through the ‘calendar’ for years, have arrived atthe finishing line while some need to block a few

more dates with additional responsibilities. Yes, we aretalking about the Citation and Investiture ceremonies. And the

year comes to an end. Time to change the calendar? Nah. Just adda few more events and an Amitian is good to get started, again. G T

team from AIS Vasundhara 6 had gone there to participate in the Eurofest competition. The

famous Baltic sea is considered an arm of the Atlantic Ocean, and is enclosed by Scandinavia &

Finland, the Baltic countries and the North European plain. It covers an area of 386,000 sq km.
