Bitter or bet-ter, ikaw, ano pipiliin mo? Ngayon ang makasaysayang araw ng unang State of the Nation address (SONa) ni Pangulong Benigno Sim-eon C. aquino iii.

AS President Aquino prepares for his first State of the Nation address (SONa), representatives of cause-oriented and sectoral groups gathered to put togeth-er their concrete demands, which they dubbed as the people’s “agenda for National Survival.”

led by Bayan (New Patriotic alliance) and Pag-babago! People’s Movement for Change, the groups presented their agenda to aquino and to the media, with the agenda grouped into issues concerning na-tional sovereignty, social justice, economic develop-ment, human rights, protection of the environment and forging of a just and lasting peace.

The consolidated people’s demands were pre-sented at the Pamantasan ng lungsod ng Maynila last July 20. These, they said, would also be the core demands that the different sectors would bring out on Aquino’s first SONA today, and which they would bring to the proper government agencies. renato reyes, Jr., secretary general of Bayan, said addressing these challenges is necessary for the na-tion’s survival.

The arroyo regime left the Philippines mired in an economic and political crisis of unparalleled propor-tions. Our sovereignty is in tatters, the broad masses of the people have been subjected to some of the worst forms of oppression in history, the economy is in shambles, the environment is severely degrad-ed, and the country is torn by intensifying strife. if the policies of the previous government remain, the country would sink deeper into crisis,” reyes said.

Economic Relief and Developmentall sectors are calling for immediate relief and long term measures to alleviate poverty and hunger. For the working people, these meant legislated wage in-creases for private sector workers and the implemen-tation of the Salary Standardization law iii (SSl 3) for government employees.

The Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) asked the aquino administration to scrap the National Wage Board as well as the wage freeze policy, which only favor the interests of capitalists. They urged the aquino administration to declare house Bill 375 as urgent. house Bill 375 provides for the creation of training, livelihood, and employment centers in cities and mu-nicipalities nationwide.

The Confederation for the Unity, recognition and advancement of Government Employees (Courage), for its part, called on the aquino administration to “completely implement SSl-3 to cover all govern-ment employees this year.

Migrante international asked the aquino govern-ment to stop the government’s labor export policy, and instead provide local jobs with just and appro-priate salaries. “This would put an end to the growing number of broken families because a parent, a son or daughter, a husband or a wife, has to go abroad and work to feed and provide for his or her family,” said Myrna Esguerra, secretary-general of Migrante international.

During arroyo’s term, nine million Filipinos have been forced to leave the country to work abroad. also, ibon Foundation said under the previous arroyo administration, the country reg-istered the longest period of high unemployment rates in Philippine history. To be continued

Malacañang yesterday said President aquino has no plan to embarrass his

predecessor President gloria Maca-pagal-arroyo in today’s State of the nation address (SOna)on the open-ing session of the 15th congress in Batasan complex, Quezon city.

Presidential spokesman Edwin lacierda disclosed that though SOna is not meant to put the now 2nd Dis-trict of Pampanga Rep. arroyo in an embarrassing situation she should expect that his successor will enumer-ate the problems he inherited from his former economics professor.

The former president, however, said she will not attend today’s SOna as she would accompany her husband Jose Miguel arroyo to Hongkong where he would seek medical atten-tion for the recurring pains in his back. Mr. arroyo earlier went under surgery over the same life-threatening illness early this year.

Meanwhile, the Philippine na-

tional Police has deployed more than 8,000 policemen while the Metropoli-tan Manila Development authority augmented the police force with 1,000 traffic enforcers to maintain peace and order during Aquino’s first SONA.

Police said they will keep the de-monstrators away from the Batasang Pambansa as they rejected the re-quest of militant groups to allow them to hold their activities right at the Batasan gates.

aside from thousands of police-men, eight closed-circuit television (ccTV) cameras will also be installed in strategic areas to prevent any un-toward incidents on the day of the SOna.

The northbound stretch of com-monwealth avenue–from Don an-tonio until after the commission on Audit–will be closed to traffic begin-ning midnight of Sunday until after

the SOna.Vehicles, however, will be allowed

to counter flow on the southbound lane.

SONA not to embarrass GMAa MEMBER of the Philip-pine national Police (PnP) was charged before the Quezon city Regional Trial court for his alleged failure to return three firearms is-sued to him.

Indicted for malversation before the QcRTc Branch 99 was chief Inspector Renato Muyot, reportedly assigned at the Office of the Assistant Regional Director for Op-erations (OaRDPO) in camp crame and a resident of no. 115 Isarog Street la loma, Quezon city.

The case stemmed from the complaints of Supt. les-lie castillo, chief of the lo-gistics Division of Quezon city Police District (QcPD), who claimed that while Muyot was assigned at the QcPD he was issued three firearms.

The three firearms is-sued to Muyot were one caliber .45 colt pistol, one 12 gauge shotgun and one M-16 rifle.

castillo said that when Muyot was reassigned to OaRDPO on February 16, 1996, he failed to return the three firearms despite re-peated demands.

During the preliminary investigation of the case, the respondent failed to appear and submit his counter-affi-davit despite due notice.

In his one-page resolu-tion, assistant city Pros-ecutor Pedro Tresvalles ex-plained that after evaluating the evidence presented, he found probable cause to in-dict the respondent in court.

The bail for his tem-porary liberty was set at P30,000. Kim Pascual

“First interview niya.

GETTING ALONG WITH THE EXES.

“Lumalabas kaming dalawa to-

gether na nagsisine. Ayaw niyang isama si Kuya Pao. Alam mo yun...”

“Nakakatawa pa nga kasi, yung fi rst time

Nag-apir sila Lian at Mark. 'Tapos, yung susunod naman, sa bahay namin. Alam mo yun, wala na, e. Kumbaga, tapos nang lahat yun and wala namang dapat pag-usapan.

To-too... parang, ‘Wow, si Mar-ian!’

ON MARK'S PUBLIC AD-MISSION.

Pero, at the same time, okay na rin. Para mata-himik na lahat ng tao...

Orlando Bloom marries Kerr

“PIRATES of the Caribbean” star Orlando Bloom married his long-time girlfriend and model Miranda Kerr. Upscale Australian department store David Jones, which employs the 27-year-old Australian model as a fashion ambassador, said she will not attend a Spring season launch on Aug. 3 be-cause she was honeymooning with the 33-year-old British star of “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

“Given the exiting news that Miranda and Orlando have recently wed and will be enjoying their honeymoon to-gether, Miranda will not be with us” for the launch, David Jones spokeswoman Colette Garnsey said in a statement. The statement did not say where or when they had mar-ried. David Jones would not be commenting on personal aspects of the announcement, that statement said.

Kerr said she would continue to work for the store.“I am enormously grateful to David Jones to have been

given this time to enjoy such a special moment of my life,” Kerr said in the statement.

Puwede niya akong tawagang ‘Tsang.’ At least

Min-san, out of the blue......favorite ko talaga Japanese food. Eh, ‘yung Japanese restaurant na pinupuntahan namin malayo, Makati. Alam n’ya rin na tamad ako. Kasi ‘pag nagtatrabaho ako, pag-uwi ko sa bahay I wanna stay home with him. I wanna watch TV, I wanna sleep pero gusto ko nandiyan lang siya sa tabi ko. Ayaw ko siyang aalis. Magwo-workout lang siya...”san ka pupunta?” nagpa-panic na ako, ‘yung gano’n.

“So, minsan meron siyang..... Eh, ang layo n’on, eh. Itatawag pa talaga niya, ipapaki-usap pa talaga niya.

THE Integrated School of the Philippines [ISP] is a non profit inclusion school, where orally trained “speaking” deaf graduates of PID are inte-grated with regular students to achieve higher education. ISP is extremely proud of its ALL DEAF Basketball Team named–SEMFIghters.

Last June 23, 2010, Ms. Anna Marie Periquet, a multi-awarded entrepreneur, busi-ness and civic leader, new member of the SEMFI Board of Directos and female image model and endorser of Phiten, introduced the SEMFIghters to the head of Phiten Phils., Mr. Ron Colmenar, who hap-pens to be a former player and coach of De La Salle Uni-versity. Phiten Phils. is the number one manufacturer of titanium necklaces, bracelets, KT Tape, gel and other sports accessories. Mr. Colmenar together with Ms. Periquet will visit the school on the last week of this month to watch

the team’s practice and to assess each player’s level. By then, he will recommend a coach and sports psychologist to handle the team.

He will also develop skills and drills program for the team. Mr. Colmenar told the

SEMFIghters that there is no physical disability that can stop any athlete from succeeding for as long as one possesses 2 qualities: SMART (mind) and HEART. The SEMFIgth-ers promised Mr. Colmenar and Ms. Periquet that they

will study and work hard, be committed and dedicated to their goal, and that they will never give up. Phiten gave each member of the team a Phiten titanium necklace, their flagship product which boosts energy and flexibility.

PRESIDEnT Benigno “noynoy” Aquino III will serve as the guest of honor during the 3rd na-tional Convention of the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, which will take place in the last week of July.

As such, Caloocan City Councilor and Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas President Ricojudge “RJ” Echiverri enjoined all barangay officials to at-tend the event and take part in the celebration.

The third national convention will officially kick off on July 29 with the registration of participants at the Manila Pavilion located at the corner of Un Avenue and Maria Orosa Street, Manila.

The bulk of the activities and main part of the affair will take place on the second day, July 30, at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City, featuring President Aquino’s speech to the delegates of the convention.

Officials of the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipi-nas will personally hand over to President Aquino during the event a resolution requesting the post-ponement of the barangay elections slated on Oc-tober 2010. Aside from President Aquino, a hand-ful of senators and congressmen who may be able to help the Liga ng mga Barangay in deferring the barangay elections are also expected to attend.

Echiverri, for his part, expects a huge turnout of barangay officials from all over the country during the national convention since they would also be tackling section 393 of the local government code apart from the request for election postponement.

He said that he would once again push for the immediate adherence to section 393, which enu-merate the different benefits that a barangay offi-cial is entitled to by law.

Ever since he became president of the Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, Echiverri has sought the proper observance of section 393, which he said would be of great boon to barangay leaders in the country.

REGULATORY relief has come for rural banks that even now tether on the brink of ruin in the form of capital injection from both the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp.

The relief is too late for such entities as the Peo-ple’s Bank of Binmaley and thousands of thrifty and industrious Pangasinenses or the depositors of the Rural Bank of Kananga in Leyte who fell vic-tim to alleged financial shenanigans of self-styled financier Celso delos Angeles.

Deputy BSP governor nestor Espenilla, Jr. said the monetary board approved just days earlier the so-called Strengthening Program for Rural Banks or SPRB which enables the community lenders to receive financial aid from regulators long before their financial problems becomes fatal.

The measure gained approval from the seven-man monetary board in the wake of the admis-sion by PDIC president Jose “Jopot” nograles that more or less 15 percent or 179 of the rural bank population have been weakened and under some form of financial distress.

HEAVY downpour yester-day noon turned several Metro Manila’s major and minor thoroughfares flood-ed, thus slowing down traffic that caused inconvenience to motorists, commuters and even pedestrians.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said many roads were inaccessible due to floods as of 2 p.m.

Base on MMDA reports disclosed that EDSA-Aurora tunnel, EDSA-Arayat and Farmer's Plaza areas, both in Quezon City; EDSA-Taft intersection in Manila; East Service Road in FTI area in Taguig City; Baclaran area in Parañaque City and EDSA-Connecticut area in San Juan City are impass-able due to flood. España and Taft Avenues were also

flooded.The Philippine Atmo-

spheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Ad-ministration said an inter-tropical convergence zone brought the heavy rains. It

also reported that a second low-pressure area (LPA) entered the Philippine ter-ritory Saturday afternoon and threatens to bring rains inland in some parts of the country.

E RIn’S life was so different from that of most eight-year-olds. While other kids were running and playing and eating ice cream, Erin was ly-

ing in a bed being fed through a tube—able to see only the brightest lights and hear only the loudest sounds. Her life consisted of needles and nurses and hospital visits as she battled ongoing illnesses and profound disabilities.

Surrounded by a remarkable family who cared for her with compassion and filled her life with love, Erin died before reaching her ninth birthday.

What can be learned from a precious child like Erin—one who never spoke a word or colored a picture or sang a song? A friend of Erin’s family put it best: “We are all better for having had Erin in our lives. She taught us compassion, unconditional love, and appreciation for the little things.”

Children such as Erin also remind us that this world is not reserved for the perfect, the wealthy, or the ath-letic. Each person, no matter their physical, mental, or emotional condition, is created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26-27) and is of equal value and significance. Our Lord has compassion for the weak, the broken, and all He has made (Ps. 145:8-9), and we should mirror that concern (Eph. 5:1-2). Is there an “Erin” in your life you can learn from?

People in whom the world sees no value, But only as burdens to bear, Teach us great lessons of God’s sovereign power— He loves them as treasures so rare. —Carbaugh

White, Cipriano Cer-meno in real life, died at the age of 55. He bequeathed his last breath at 6a.m. at his house in Barangay 177, Caloocan City.

He had been suffering from cancer since its detec-tion in February and kept

his condition unknown to close friends.

White started his movie career in the late ‘70s. He rose to fame in the televi-sion sitcom “Buddy en Sol” with Eric Quizon during the early ‘90s.

His movies in the 1990’s included “Haba-baba-doo! Puti-puti-poo,” “Tong Tat-long Tatay Kong Pakitong-kitong,” and “Tik Tak Toys: My Kolokotoys.”

AnYOnE can be accorded with VIP assistance for a fee at the

ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Thus said the newly ap-pointed Manila Interna-tional Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Jose Angel Honrado as he divulged that they would slowly phase out VIP assis-tance in the airport prem-ises of the nAIA terminals one, two and three.

According to the airport chief, they will remove the Meet and Assist (MAS) service at the airport which anyone can avail of the VIP treatment for a fee of P800.

The airport chief added that the abolition of the VIP assistance will be done in phases. “We have to edu-cate the passengers slowly. We cannot undo this over-night,” Honrado explained.

He said that, in other countries, everyone is re-quired to line up at the im-migration counters for pro-cessing of their arrival or departure papers and that is if the person is under VIP fa-cilitation, it will be made after the immigration clearance, wherein every passenger has to submit himself/herself to.

He said anyone who avails of the MAS service will be met or sent off by an airport staff that will escort the passenger/s through a special lane in the immi-gration area so there would be no more need to wait in long lines.

Honrado said that they would have to study on up to what extent the airport staff could extend port courte-sies to ranking government officials and the military.

It can be recalled that former president and now Pampanga congresswoman

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, her husband Juan Miguel, and Camarines Sur 1st dis-trict Representative Dedo-dato “Dato” Arroyo were seen lining up before the Immigration counters.

Even President Aquino’s two sisters, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz and Pinky Aquino-Abellada, did not ask for VIP treatment when the two left for Hong Kong, recently.

They were seen without any security or assistance from airport personnel dur-ing the whole departure process despite having res-ervations at the Presidential Lounge.

According to the law-maker, the Aquino gov-ernment should be able to address and prioritize edu-cation, science and tech-nology, environment and climate change mitigation, health, and infrastructure.

“We are looking for-ward to hearing President noynoy's vision for the country and his framework for his six-year term. This is the time to stimulate the economy,” said Angara.

IT’S always different when La Salle faces Ateneo.

School pride, personal pride, color pride and all these are at stake.

Last Saturday, more than 16,000 people came to watch a classic ballgame, a game that looked like we were watch-ing a championship game.

The Big Dome was as usual filled to the rafters, and this has always been a rare time when the country’s richest and most powerful men and women gather under one roof.

They scream, they shout, they giggle, and they lose their poise.

But no one cares. For as long as they’d be able to bring

out the blue and the green in their hearts.

Indeed, every La Salle-Ateneo game is a national event.

***IT was a sweet come-from-behind vic-tory for the Green Archers.

On the other hand a painful forget-table loss for ADMU.

Because just when Norman Black and the Blue Eagles thought they have won with a few ticks left in the game, Dindo Pumaren and his Green Archers unleashed a last-ditch offensive massa-cre that caught Ateneo unguarded. Un-deniably off its footing.

In the end, the green came out of the Big Dome with the bigger smile.

To think we’re only in the first round.

***CONFIrMED: Krista ranillo is getting married in the US very soon.

To a boyfriend whose name is defi-nitely not Manny Pacquiao.

All the rumors linking Krista to Pac-man will very soon die down, naturally.

Hopefully.***

STILL no positive word on the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

Obviously, they’re still not contented with the millions they are bound to earn

if they face each other this year. They want more. That’s why they’re both creating

noise.Yes, both!

***MACMAC CArDONA finally married his long-time girlfriend in church rites last weekend.

It was long overdue though, that’s why no one was surprised anymore when MacMac sent out his wedding in-vitations.

***IS it true Ateneo has seen the last of MVP’s support?

Word has beeen going around that MVP will be supporting the FEU Tamaraws next year, and not the Blue Eagles. MVP’s father is said to have graduated from Far Eastern Univer-sity.

MVP though was among those in the Ateneo crowd last Saturday.

***THE logo of Meralco is seen among the sponsors in the UP jersey.

Meralco is now supporting the UP maroons.

Manny V. Pangilinan is at the helm of Meralco.

Words have been going around that MVP is now also supporting UP.

It is said MVP sponsored the recent US training of the UP Maroons.

***UE loses again.

Now, they’re 0-4.What is happening to this team?

FEELING neglect-ed by the camp of Floyd Mayweath-er, Jr., Filipino bo-

xing icon Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Top rank big boss Bob Arum chose to pit in Mexican boxer Anto-nio Margarito for the No-vember showdown.

Disgraced just a year ago, Margarito is now mak-ing a comeback on top of the world of prizefighting.

The former two-time world champion, infamously known for being caught with a loaded hand-wrap prior to a title bout with Sugar Shane Mosley, landed the fight of his career when Arum chose him as Pacquiao’s opponent on November 13.

Both Pacquiao and Mar-garito are promoted by Top rank.

The choice of Margarito came about after Arum got no response from unbeaten May-weather, Jr. on his willingness to sign the contract for a bout that would pit two of the big-

gest names in boxing today.Miguel Cotto, the Puerto

rican legend whom Pacquiao demolished in 12 rounds last November to win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown, was also included in Arum’s list but in the end Margarito turned out to be the logical choice.

“Margarito knows only one way to fight and that’s coming forward,” said the 78-year old Arum in defend-ing his choice of an opponent deemed by many as un-popular following his illegal tactic of putting a hardened substance in his knuckle pad during the fight with Mos-ley which he lost by a ninth round technical knockout.

“They’re going to get in there and fight. That’s what people want to see.”

While a Cotto rematch may still be competitive, Arum sees a Margarito fight as a lucrative option.

“Cotto was beaten and even with (Hall of Fame trainer) Emanuel Steward now with

him, I don’t think people be-lieve that it’s enough to make a difference and I’m not sure they would buy it as competi-tive,” Arum said.

Pacquiao, now busy pre-paring for the Philippine Congress’ Monday opening, is indeed amenable to the fight having been consulted first about the matter by Arum and his adviser, Mi-chael Konz.

“That’s fine with me. I have no problems in fight-ing Margarito and this will be my first time to fight in Mexico,” said the 31-year-old Pacquiao, who’s also known as the “Mexican Assassin” for beating legendary fighters out of the North American country such as Marco An-tonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Os-car Larios, Hector Velasquez and Jorge Solis.

But the match can only be held in Mexico in the event Margarito’s bid to re-apply for a US license is revoked for good.

TWO of the country’s top sports officials join in send-ing off the entire Team Phil-ippines to the Youth Olym-pic Games in this week’s session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at Shakey’s U.N. Avenue tomorrow.

Philippine Olympic Com-mittee (POC) president Jose

“Peping” Cojuangco and newly appointed Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman ritchie Garcia share the limelight in the 10:30 a.m. session with rP Chef de Mission Mark Joseph and the nine athletes and five coaches who will comprise the Philippine delegation to the Singapore Games slated

second week of August. Also appearing in the

public sports program to be carried live over DZSr Sports radio 918 and presented by Outlast Battery, PAGCOr, Accel and Shakey’s are the Australian women’s futsal team seeing action in the Irok Futsal International and Irok coach Manny Batungbacal.

FILIPINO bet Sylvester Lopez will face a scrappy and resilient Thai chal-lenger who has the reputa-tion of being a tormentor of Filipino boxers when he stakes his World Box-ing Council (WBC) inter-national super flyweight crown against Wandee Singwangcha on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Cen-ter in Pasig City .

The 30-year-old Thai veteran, who arrives today together with compatriot prizefighter Sooksan Chai-chan Sangmuangloei, has

beaten all but one of the Filipino boxers he has faced in racking up a record of 62 wins, 14 by knockout, 11 losses and one draw.

Singwangcha’s only loss to a Pinoy pug was in May last year to Marvin Son-sona, who stopped the Thai in two rounds to capture the then vacant WBO Oriental flyweight belt at the Cebu Coliseum.

Since that defeat, how-ever, the Thai has been busy and racked up six straight wins, the last three all with-in four rounds.

Lanete is NCAA ‘Player of the Week’EVEN a long two-week layoff could not pre-vent San Beda’s Garvo Lanete from sustain-ing his hot-shooting ways.

But, Lanete proved the long respite could not affect his shooting after he powered last year’s runnerup San Beda to its fourth straight win in as many outings in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament.

With his impressive shooting that pre-served San Beda’s immaculate record and solidified its hold at the top spot together with defending champion San Sebastian, Lan-ete emerged as the Accel/FilOil NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week.

The 21-year-old guard buried 22 points with

three triples in the Lions 77-60 rout of the Le-tran Knights, their archrivals, Wednesday.

Lanete also had five rebounds, two as-sists and a pair of steals in 30 minutes, enough to snatch the weekly honor sup-ported by Terrilicious meat products.

“He plays good and knows when to step up. He can deliver big shots at any given time, that’s how good this kid is,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim of his prized veteran.
