2017 EXPERTS WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Understanding the Social Impacts of Artificial Intelligence Now

to Ensure a More Equitable Future.

Founded by Kate Crawford and Meredith Whittaker, the AI Now Initiative

is an interdisciplinary research initiative working to understand AI's social

and economic impacts.

The AI Now Experts Workshop is an invite-only convening of top practitioners

and researchers dedicated to understanding and addressing the challenges

we face as artificial inteligence moves into our everyday lives. The Workshop precedes the public AI Now Symposium, which opens up this conversation

to a broader audience.

The Workshop and the Symposium are hosted by the AI Now Initiative with

support this year from the AI Ethics and Governance Fund, The John D. and

Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the MIT Media Lab.

All lighting talk sessions and the entire Symposium program will be

live-streamed from the AI Now homepage and later archived on our site.

Addressing the social impacts of artificial intelligence

now to ensure a more equitable future

Welcome to the AI Now 2017 SymposiumArtificial intelligence is rapidly moving into everyday life, woven into our core social institutions like healthcare, employment, education, criminal justice and more. Yet the vast majority of AI technologies are being put in place with minimal oversight, few accountability mechanisms, and little research about their ongoing social and economic impacts. To harness AI’s power for good, we will need a much deeper understanding of its effects. It is this need that the annual AI Now Symposium is designed to illuminate and address.

The AI Now 2017 Symposium is hosted by the AI Now Initiative with generous support from the AI Ethics and Governance Fund, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the MIT Media Lab.

About AI Now InitiativeFounded by Kate Crawford and Meredith Whittaker, the AI Now Initiative is an interdisciplinary research initiative working to understand AI's social and economic impacts.

Join the ConversationWe encourage you to share your thoughts throughout the program online. Our final panel this evening includes an audience Q&A with questions submitted and selected via Twitter.
