If you work hard with utmost dedication and determination, you are bound to win. What, according to you, should be the nuclear policy of India at present? We have discussed Smiling Buddha (code name for India’s first success- ful nuclear bomb test in 1974) for long. It’s time we follow an independent nu- clear programme that is not affected by foreign pressure. Nuclear power is a major contributor to India’s energy sec- tor. We need to understand the basic nu- clear doctrine of India and also of other countries, to create the best programme for the benefit of the society. Where do you foresee India in 2020? Today, the entire world is envious of India, a country that has marveled in every field! By 2020, I foresee more in- dustry interface in academia, which would create industry ready graduates. We need to identify domains for prospective study, research and produc- tivity. For example, one area of research could be rural areas. We have come up with Rural Technology Action Groups that work using technology. India needs more research in such areas. Five years from now, there should be coherent syn- ergy in the area of science and technol- ogy, which would lead to faster growth. Research should be directed and pro- pelled towards productivity. India would emerge as a technology driven country with enterprising individuals committed to shape the country’s dynamism on the path of success. How do you find Amity different from other academic institutions? Amity is a dynamic institution. It is a re- search and innovation driven university with the potential for further excellence. The students are highly enthusiastic and ambitious. I can see that Amity has made great strides in the field of technical ed- ucation, management and other areas. What is your message for the youth? I believe in the power of the youth. India is on the path of becoming a developed country and in this journey, the students can play a crucial role and must acceler- ate the process of growth. ��The policy is important on the social front.Getting rid of the No Detention Policy willhave adverse social implications especially inthe rural arena, ranging from lack of job op-portunities to an increasing number of schooldropouts and early marriage of the girl child.“This policy followed a non-threatening, ho-listic assessment, which in turn, has led to anincrease in the number of student enroll-ments. Doing away with it would lead to sud-den dropouts, rising stress levels that can leadto more suicides, and can also give the Indianparents another chance to withdraw their

daughters from schools. And whatabout those who stand a chance ofearning their bread and butter basedon basic educational qualification?”

A teacher wouldassess every disciple on various param-eters to gauge academic as well as intel-lectual competence. The currenteducation system can learn from the ed-ucation system of the olden golden dayswhen it comes to teacher-student rela-tionship. Besides, bidding goodbye toexaminations may not be such a bad ideaafter all!

Emphasis on vocational skillsBack in those days, great emphasis waslaid on real-life skills to not only helpbuild warriors but also citizens capableof running cities. Students were im-parted practical skills along with theory.

Physical educationFitness formed an important part of thedaily schedule as students were encour-aged to participate in archery andwrestling. Yoga was also stressed upon.

Studying with natureNature and forests are intrinsically

linked to a student’s education. In an-cient days, most learning centres weresituated in the forests, away from town-ships. Ancient India believed that a stu-dent should be connected, by mind andsoul, to Mother Earth. Guru Ra-bindranath Tagore had built VisvaBharati Shantiniketan on this premise.

Free educationThe best things in life are free and edu-

also their teachers for better understand-ing of the subject. On August 19, 2015, the HindiMoot Court Society (HMCS) ofAmity Law School II organised

Janmanch, which literally translates to ‘astage that is open for all’. The platformsaw a discussion by students on the topic‘Validity of Capital Punishment’.

The student participants spoke elo-quently to express their views on theburning topic. Some of them supportedcapital punishment, while some shunnedit completely. Dr Aditya, deputy director, ALS II, ap-preciated the efforts of students and theHMCS committee. Shivam Verma,founder, HMCS and Dr Santosh Kumar,advisor, HMCS, spoke about the signif-icance of the Hindi language in society

as well as Indian courts of law. AshutoshBhardwaj, general secretary, HMCS,proposed the vote of thanks. Akanksha Tiwari won the first prize inthe competition while Prajyot Rai andMalvinder Singh bagged the second andthird positions respectively. The pro-gramme was organised by chief studentcoordinators Shubham Sinha, PronoyChatterjee, Md Shadab Naqvi, NiveditaChauhan and Priyank Kumar Saxena.G T

technique. A sort of mental map. He plots a map with lo-cations. It doesn’t have to be a real place. And you de-posit memories there so that theoretically, you couldnever forget anything. All you have to do is find your wayback through the route,” explained Watson. WatchingSherlock talk about his ‘Mind Palace’, many of us as-pired to have one of our own, in the hope of becoming assmart as him. While we may not end up becoming repli-cas of Sherlock, this memory technique can definitely in-crease our smartness levels.

What is a mind palace?The ‘mind palace’ theory is derived from the method ofLoci, a mnemonic device adopted in ancient Roman andGreek rhetorical treatises. It is a memory enhancementmethod which uses visualization of images to organiseand recall information. Ancient Greek poet Simonides, who escaped from a col-lapsing banquet, was the one who came up with this the-ory. He realised that by visualising the room where theaccident happened, he could perfectly recall the namesof all his squashed fellow revellers. He later put his dis-covery to good use by associating things he wanted to re-member with walks through buildings he knew well.

Does it work?Many memory contest champions have claimed to usethis technique to recall faces, digits and lists of words.Eight-time World Memory Champion Dominic O'Brienuses this technique. The 2006 World Memory Champion,Clemens Mayer from Germany, used a 300-point-longjourney through his house for his world record in ‘num-ber half marathon’. He memorised 1040 random digits inhalf an hour! The technique is known to be effective forremembering day-to-day information.

How does the technique work?This technique has little to do with intelligence and moreto do with the selective use of the brain. So next time,construct your own mind palace to memorise a tough his-tory chapter. Your brain has several compartments, like apersonal vault, which can be selectively used to store in-formation. The effectiveness of the technique, however,relies on your ability to see and walk around in that placementally with ease. You should be able to ‘be there’ atwill, using your mind’s eye only.G T

Time to createyour own

Mind palace requires regular practice andconcentration. You also need to choose afamiliar place, to be able to use thispractice effectively. Here are the steps:

1 Create the palace

2 Define a route

Arrange your memories in certain locations.These should be areas which correspond to afact and are more likely to be able to hold infor-mation Eg: the flower vase midway to your bed-room is an effective location to store a memory.

4 Place things to be remembered

Instead of always using words to store a mem-ory, use symbols. For eg: if you are trying to re-member that you have to buy groceries, imaginestoring the image of a supermarket.

5 Use symbols

Be as creative as possible. Store symbols depict-ing an experience, or visualise something totallyabsurd. Eg: to remember 110, imagine a pair oftwins, with a football.

Once you have stocked your palace with evocativeimages, you need to go through it and look at them.The more you explore, the more you can recall thefacts. However, it requires regular practice.

6 Be creative 7 Explore your palace

Once you have memorised, recall the informationby revisiting the palace and walking through theroute mentally. With practice, you can start any-where and recall a specific piece of information.

8 Use your palace

Choose a known place like your house or schoolso that you’re familiar with every nook and cor-ner. Imagine or make up every little detail as cre-atively as possible. Walk around the place so youget accustomed to every part of that place.

Memorise the particular route you will follow inthe palace. This will help you to rememberthings in order.

Place the memory in the areas you want to re-member. For eg: the doormat could have the firstfew lines of your speech, then the cupboard canhave the next few lines. Avoid putting too muchinformation in one place.

Dear diary,Last night, I had a very beautiful dream. I was sit-ting in my classroom and all my schoolmates weresitting around me. Oh! I just realised how much Imiss school! The 12 years I spent in that institution,which was my second abode, were perhaps themost beautiful years of my life. But most of all, I miss the teachers whoguided us at every step. They chastised ourblunders, yet were always ready to help us. Theknowledge I gained was what shaped me, and mademe what I am today. ButVishnu's wife, Goddess Lakshmi, didn't appre-ciate his growing friendship with Bali. So shetied a rakhi to Bali, and when he asked what shewanted in return, she asked for her husband to besent back to Vaikunth. According to Mahabharat, when Krishna cut hisfinger in a battle, Draupadi tore off a piece ofher sari and bandaged his cut. From then, Kr-ishna swore to help her whenever she was inmisery. True to his word, Krishna came to herrescue during the infamous cheer haran andsaved her from impending disgrace. Such is thepower of the thread of love, that bind two soulsin the warmth of loving care and devotion. The biggest gift a brother can give to his sister,is a promise of lifelong protection. But today, itis disheartening to see that even after umpteendistress calls made by sisters, brothers are un-able to come to their rescue. Do all the sisters ofthe country really feel protected? When 23 year old Mark Zuckerbergfounded Facebook as a psychology andcomputer science student at Harvard Uni-versity, little did he know that he was on hisway to developing a hugely popular socialnetworking website that would connect zil-lions of people across the world and be-come a medium of cultural exchange and aplatform to usher in social transformation.Little did he know that his site, intendedsolely as a ‘fun zone’, would turn into amoney making machine for him and an em-ployment avenue for many others.

Zuckerberg had developed anumber of social networkingwebsites for fellow students,including CourseMatch, whichallowed users to view peopletaking their degree, and Facemash,where you could compare and ratepeople’s attractiveness. Hissocially interactive site, Facebook,debuted on February 4, 2004, at hisalma mater, Harvard University.Zuckerberg developed this SNSwith his college roommates andfellow students EduardoSaverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. By May 1, 2005, it grew to supportmore than 800 college networks. By the end of 2005, a profile on the FB page had almost as manydetails you would find on it today, except that it still had an amateurish MySpace vibe back then.

A year later, Facebook got a more adultmakeover, which included the addition ofmini-feed, ie, a friend’s FB activity directlyon one’s profile. Once upon a time there was a girlcalled Sneha. She lived with herfather. Her exams were about to

start and she was not very good at stud-ies. She thought of skipping her examsdue to anxiety. When she told this to herfather, he took her to the kitchen. Hefilled three pots with water and placedeach of them on a high flame. Once thewater began to boil, he placed potatoesin the first pot, eggs in the second oneand ground coffee beans in the third pot. Sneha gave a puzzled look to her father.

She could not understand what he wastrying to do. After some time, he tookout the potatoes and eggs, and pouredthe coffee in a mug. He asked Snehawhat she saw. Sneha quickly replied, “Isee potatoes, coffee and eggs.” She alsonoticed that the potatoes had becomesoft, the eggs had become hard from in-side, and when she sipped the coffee, ittasted delicious. Her father looked at her and explained,“These three items were different in na-ture but they faced the same adversity.

All three items were boiled in water buteach reacted differently. The potato wasstrong but after boiling, it became soft.The egg was fragile but boiling made ithard. However, the coffee beans wereunique. They took a new form whichwas better than before. Even we humanshave different personalities and thequestion is how we respond to a prob-lem. Give your exams and you will besurprised to see yourself do better thanyou expected.” Sneha smiled and re-alised that running away from any prob-lem was not a solution. She understoodthat every challenge is an experience.

The students of AIS Gurgaon 46visited The Energy and ResourceInstitute (TERI) with the aim to

learn about conserving nature and its el-ements and to understand a way to modelIndia towards a more energy efficient fu-ture. The purpose of the educational ex-cursion was to make children aware ofthe projects related to sustainable energyand environment. At TERI, the studentsvisited the Solar Energy and BiomassGasification plants. They were excited tolearn about the natural waste water man-agement done completely by plants fromthe Phragmites australis family. Children

were made familiar with the process ofcomposting and collecting dried leavesto prepare manure. School principal ArtiChopra encouraged the students to comeup with innovative ideas for sustainabledevelopment without jeopardising thenon-renewable resources. Apatriotic singing competition was organised by BharatVikas Parishad at Inderprastha Engineering College on

August 9, 2015. The team of AIS Vas 1 added a feather in theircap by winning the first prize in the competition, and have fur-ther been selected for the state level competition. The compe-tition saw the participation of teams from 21 schools. Eachteam comprised of six to eight students and had to present twopatriotic songs, one each in Hindi and Sanskrit.
