Coil Battles to Haskell Victory (cont. from p1) Jockey Martin Garcia admitted Coil (Point Given)=sbobble at the break changed his strategy for the race.AHe was ready at the break, but just before the gatesopened, he stepped back a bit, and that was that,@Garcia explained. AI wasn=t planning on being that farback, but once that happened, I didn=t have a choice. Itook him off the fence going up the backstretch, thatdidn=t seem to be the best place today, it was kind ofheavy. I was sitting on a ton of horse turning for home. When I got to Shackleford my horse kind of waited--hetends to do that when he makes the lead. I just keptgetting into him. I knew I had Shackleford, but myhorse made it interesting.@ The lightly raced Coil was making just his sixth careerstart in the Haskell. A maiden winner in his second startat Hollywood Park last November, the chestnut openedhis 2011 campaign with an optional claiming victory inInglewood in May before earning a one-length triumphin the June 11 GIII Affirmed H. He missed by just ahead when second in the July 9 GII Swaps S. last timeout.

Coil, a son of Baffert=s 2001 Haskell winner PointGiven, gave owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and PaulWeitman a second straight victory in the race. The triowere represented by the Baffert-trained championLookin at Lucky (Smart Strike) a year ago. To read theTDN Magazine=s Mike Pegram: An Uncommon CommonMan, click here.

No Excuses for Shackleford There were no excuses from the runner-up=s camp.Shackleford, making his first start since finishing fifth inthe June 11 GI Belmont S., was a handful in thepaddock, but looked to have a made-to-order trip. AWegot a great trip,@ trainer Dale Romans said. AHe took thelead turning for home, and dug in once Baffert=s horsecame up. It looked like he was digging in very gamely indeep stretch. I thought that he was going to come backand win it.@ Trainer Kelly Breen reported it was likely onto the Aug. 27 GI Travers S. for third-place finisherRuler on Ice (Roman Ruler). The colt was closing late inhis first start since winning the Belmont S. AThey justkind of quickened going to the third quarter and it tookhim a while to get going,@ Breen reported.

Since the upgrading of the European Pattern for filliesand mares early last decade, a new era has ushered infor the heavyweight distaffers, of which Goldikovatakes the highest rank. Multiple Group 1 wins for theleading females has become commonplace, but it isprobable that none will ever come close to equaling thetally of Goldikova, who was fittingly bringing up a 14thhighest-level success in the centenary year of theWertheimer racing operation. Watching her glide overthe terrain of her favored Normandy circuit is like areplay of the previous occasion, with Flash Danceproving the perfect tow until two out when Peslier asksher to extend. That was the case again yesterday andthere was never an anxious moment for her avidsupporters, who had lost no faith after her eclipse atRoyal Ascot at the hands of Canford Cliffs (Ire) (Tagula{Ire}) in the June 14 G1 Queen Anne S. Only Makfi(GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) has managed to get past her at thisvenue, when the ground turned against her in the G1Prix Jacques le Marois 12 months ago and Freddy Headis mindful that she should be spared another gruelingtest if the rains come again. Ask the Moon, winless since taking an optionalclaimer in the Meadowlands slop way back in 2009,was claimed from Millicent Johnsen and trainer NedAllard by Farnsworth Stables for $75,000 out of arunner-up effort at Belmont June 15. She returned torun third for Gary Contessa in the July 1 Sky Beauty S.last time out. Making her first official start for trainerMarty Wolfson, the bay mare was sent off the longestshot on the board at 18-1. She jumped out to the earlylead, setting fractions of :23.61, :46.92 and 1:10.83,and sailed clear uncontested for the upset victory. AItwas a pretty decent pace, but the way she did it, onthe lead, she was doing it so easily,@ said JavierCastellano, a replacement for Luis Saez. AShe got a littletired at the end, but she gave me a good race and wasstrong.@ Castellano swept both stakes at SaratogaSaturday, taking the GII Jim Dandy aboard Stay Thirsty(Bernardini) and the GI Diana with Zagora (Fr) (GreenTune). AThe weekend couldn=t have been better,@ therider added. Wolfson, speaking by phone fromMonmouth Park, said, AShe=s a beautiful mare, that=swhy I claimed her. That, and the Malibu Moon. I lovedthat there was less speed in the race. I told Javiersometimes when you go to the lead, they=ll back offand leave you alone. Claim to Black-Type Fame... Robert and Myron Miller=s Farnsworth Farm is nostranger to success by way of the claim box. In fact,Farnsworth has perfected a strategy of targeting higher-priced claimers, most with good previous form, andturning them into stakes horses (if they weren=talready). Its most notable success is the good sprintfilly Jessica Is Back (Put It Back). Claimed for $50,000in 2009, the chestnut was moved to Marty Wolfson=sbarn and won her first stakes four starts later. LastJuly, she posted a career high in the GI PrincessRooney S. She was offered as a racing or broodmareprospect at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton November Sale andsold to Caroyn Vogel for $475,000. She just missed bya nose when second in the Sunshine Millions F/M Sprintfor Vogel, who kept her with Wolfson, before beingretired to the breeding shed. And, while Jessica Is Backand Ask the Moon are Farnsworth=s biggest scores, they aren=t the operation=s only astute claims. In April,Farnsworth reached in and claimed the 3-year-old fillyOak Marsh (First Samurai) out of a winning effortagainst $50,000 maiden claimers at Gulfstream. Shewon a first-level allowance under Wolfson=s care nextout, and more recently was runner-up in the DesertVixen S. at Monmouth. They claimed the 4-year-old fillyBella Moneta (Max=s Pal) for $32,000 in March.

She won an optional claimer in her next trip to thepost, and was second in a pair of minor stakes atCalder in May and June. The 4-year-old filly Bronx CityGirl (Yankee Gentleman) was taken for $50,000 in Mayof 2010; she ran third in the GIII Azalea S. in her next, and has hit the board in her last three starts, all instakes company. And Amazing (Greatness), who wasalready a SW & MGSP when she was claimed for$75,000 at Saratoga last August, has proven hermettle with three additional stakes placings, including asecond in the most recent renewal of the SunshineMillions Distaff.

Durban Thunder was largely unconsidered here withthe overseas challenger Famous Name and topdomestic talent Elle Shadow in opposition, but thestrong stayer had other plans as he took advantage ofan enterprising ride from Terry Hellier. Sent straight tothe lead from the outset, the chestnut kicked decisivelyat the top of the stretch and, despite Famous Namemaking some inroads late on, was not for catching.Durban Thunder had made significant progress at threewhen winning the Listed Grand Prix de la Region Alsaceat Strasbourg in September and the G3 EngelbertStrauss Trophy at Baden-Baden the following month.Fourth behind Elle Shadow in the G3 Hessen-Pokal atDortmund in November, he had returned to be third inthe Listed Preis von Dahlwitz at Hoppegarten May 8before filling that same position behind Night Magic(Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}) in the 11-furlong G2 GrosserPreis der Badischen Unternehmen at Baden-Baden June 5. Only Lucas Cranach (Ger) (Mamool {Ire}) got inthe way of a breakthrough success in the June 26 G2Hansa-Preis over 12 furlongs at Hamburg, but therewas no denying him this time as Famous Name missedout again at the top level. Trainer Torsten Mundry said,ADurban Thunder is at his best at the moment, and weleft it up to Terry as to how he wanted to ride him. Weare absolutely thrilled.@

Sidney=s Candy, already a graded stakes winner onsynthetic, turf and dirt, was making his first start sincebeing purchased privately by WinStar from his breeder. The chestnut colt, winner of last year=s GI Santa AnitaDerby, ended his sophomore campaign with a 7 1/4-length romp in the off-the-turf GIII Sir Beufort S. inDecember. In two starts this term for the Craigs, hewas runner-up over the all-weather in the May 7 GIIMervyn Leroy H. and missed by just a nose whensecond over the Hollywood lawn in the May 28 GIIAmerican H. Heavily favored here, Sidney=s Candymoved swiftly out to take the early lead without anyprompting. Under a snug hold and unchallenged, heloped through fractions of :25.83 and :50.49. Askedfor more in upper stretch, he scampered clear and camehome much the best. AIt was pretty easy,@ admittedwinning rider Johnny Velazquez. AHe broke sharp. Iknew there was no speed in the race. When we got tothe first turn, I put my hands down and he ratedhimself in the slow pace. I waited for them to come atus at the quarter pole before I asked him to doanything. I was a little cautious.

AAs soon as I asked him, he responded and it workedout well for us,@ Velazquez continued. Elliott Walden, president and CEO of WinStar, added, AIt=s a little bit ofa relief when you run a horse for the first time;obviously a big favorite. The pace scenario was a littleunusual, especially for a horse that comes fromCalifornia and wants to run in :22 and change, :45. Iwas a little apprehensive about him going that slowly, but he finished up nicely, which was exactly what wewanted.@ As for what is next for the versatile runner, trainer Todd Pletcher said, AWe=re going to consider the[Sept. 3 GI] Forego or the [Sept. 3 GI] Woodward, orturf.
