SOUTH PARK - San Diego’s charming, colorful, hip, historic neighborhood, home to interesting independent shops, galleries, restaurants, bars & more.
This page, clockwise from top left: Yarn-bomb project in support of Graffiti Beach; outdoor seating at Café Madeleine; glassware made from beer bottles at Make Good; ice cream in a waffle cone from Daily Scoop on Juniper; street sign; “Le Moules Frites” from Brabant Bar & Cafe.
Opposite: The corner of 30th St./Fern St. & Juniper St.
WHAT SOUTH PARK MAY LACK IN SIZE, it makes up for with a close community of small businesses and events, like the South Park Walkabout. The petite neighborhood has a fantastic array of locally owned shops and restaurants frequented by local regulars and visitors alike. Often friends can be found, or made, simply walking down the street!
I may stop by Café Madeleine, a small and sweet French cafe, for a latte and crepe. Pick up a gift for my mother from the fabulous selection of handcrafted and designer goods at Progress. Buy a locally crafted necklace from Make Good or Graffiti Beach (the latter of which is owned by a friend). For lunch, I often enjoy buying a roll of sushi and a bowl of miso from the Pan-Asian restaurant Fire Horse next door. Later in the evening, my family enjoys stopping by Brabant Bar & Cafe—a traditional Belgian pub that feels like a world away despite the fact that its nearly across the street—where we know the owner and he greets us with hugs. If we’re still in the mood to be out and about, we can stop by Rebecca’s Coffeehouse next door for a live performance by a local artist serenading the room with either original songs or popular covers.
