A TALK WITH ABRAHAM KLEIN

One of the world’s best referees, Abraham Klein offi ciated at three World Cup fi nals. In 1970, he took to the fi eld for England–Brazil and in 1982 he was the man in the middle for the Brazil–Italy game, which is part of footballing folklore. Klein meticu-lously documented his career: from balls to yellow cards, he kept everything. At the start of 2017, Klein donated parts of his collection to the FIFA Museum. Join us as he takes us back through time to the 1970s to fi nd out how Pelé, Paolo Rossi and Bobby Moore behaved on the pitch.

FOOTBALL CINEMA: “ONCE IN A LIFETIME”

The incredible story of the New York Cos-mos: Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer arrived as football exports to the US in the ‘70s with the backing of media mogul Steve Ross and his love of “soccer”. He turned the Cosmos into the city’s most exciting club. The doc-umentary takes the spectator into the inner workings of the club that brought football into the living rooms of the US.

The German sports journalist and author is based in London and writes about English football for the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. Along with bringing British fans closer to German football, he is building bridges between two great football cultures. His new book is also about a man who operates between the two cultures. Jürgen Klopp, the German manager of Liverpool FC, is the subject of Honigstein’s biography “Ich mag, wenn’s kracht”.

Through fi lm, talks, workshops and other events, the Cultural Programme for the second half of 2017 will explore how football refl ects this conti-nental divide – or the other way round. Among the highlights, a podium discussion examines how football culture develops in countries where it is not the national sport.
