As a lawyer, QC, he advised on Momiji’s legal matters and was intricately involved in creating the original application for the build- ing of the Momiji Senior Residence and incorporating MHCS. He was part of the team who travelled to Japan to approach several corpora- tions where they raised considerable funds for the building. He was also a founding member of the Board of Directors for the Momiji Foundation. Mr. Oiye had a unique ability to think outside the box, which was instru- mental to our organization. NEW WHEELCHAIRACCESSIBLE VANMomiji’s new wheelchair accessible vanis coming soon! As previously reported, our Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Cam-paign was a great success, thanks to all ofour generous donors including OceanFood Company Ltd., the Toronto Chapterof the National Association of JapaneseCanadians, the Nelson Arthur HylandFoundation, the Momiji Bazaar Commit-tee, and so many individual donors. Wealso received a special grant from our fun-

ders at the Central East LHIN. So, inApril, we ordered our new vehicle: a cus-tom-built van from Crestline Coach, aCanadian company, that holds twowheelchairs and eight ambulatory passen-gers, and offers up-to-date technology, comfort and safety features that our cur-rent, unreliable, 16-year-old van lacks. We’re very eager to get it here!

Although the van was ordered inApril, Crestline unfortunately didn’treceive the chassis from the manufacturer(Ford) until July – the month that we hadoriginally anticipated delivery of the com-

pleted customized vehicle. Crestline esti-mates that delivery will be during the lastweek of September. We apologize to allthose seniors who were looking forwardto using the new van this summer… andof course, to all of the donors who are stillwaiting eagerly to see the new vehiclethey paid for. We know that this new vehi-cle will be worth the wait, making trans-portation safer, more comfortable, andmore pleasurable for the entire Momijicommunity.

Education Program

MOMIJIBOWLATHONIn May, Momiji hosted over 160 partici-pants at our 12th Annual FundraisingBowlathon. The Bowlathon was held attwo different locations again this year:five-pin teams at Parkway and 10-pinteams at Richmond Hill ProBowl. TheAwards Ceremony, complete with a deli-cious Bento Box dinner, was held atMomiji which allowed all of our bowlersto be together, compare stories and dis-cover who our award winners were!

As in the past, the bowling fees andthe cost of the meal were priced to beaffordable and provide no profit so it wasthe sponsorships that the participantssolicited from family, friends and com-munity members that were the principal

fundraising sources for thisevent. Thanks to our bowlersand our donors, just over$45,000 was raised whichwas a record for the seventhyear in a row.

These funds will allowMomiji to complete someimportant projects, like fin-ishing our Momiji Café reno-vations and fixing theventilation in the EPC. Theywill also be used to help runour Elderly Persons Centre(EPC) program. Althoughour EPC receives government funding,we always need to raise additional fundsto cover the full cost of the program. Some of the additional funds that the EPCreceives are provided by the Momiji Café,

which is run entirely by volunteers. Therenovations to the Café will only enhanceour volunteer’s fundraising ability.

Momiji’s Education Program offers awide variety of courses and workshopsfor all ages and backgrounds; everythingfrom computer workshops, pottery, yoga, painting, Japanese language, flowerarranging, and much more. Our programruns throughout the year with coursesoffered in four sessions:
