Welcome to another jam packed edition of the Mold Connection - Once again we bring you details of some of the best local companies and tradesmen including a number of new advertisers. Hopefully, there won’t have been any more snow by the time the team of hard working magazine distributors set to work bringing the magazine to you. Can I ask that if you use the services of any of the advertisers, could you let them know that you saw them in The Mold Connection. When you have used any of the advertisers, I would be interested to hear how things went for you, good or bad. For example, would you recommend them? In this edition you will also notice a number of new puzzles to keep the grey matter in good working order. Feel free to let me know your thoughts. This month we have an update on the campaign to safeguard services at Mold Hospital. You can find out more on page 11. Do you know anyone planning events in the area that will be taking place over the next few months. If you do, please get them to contact me as I would love to help them promote it. I can do this in the magazine, on our Facebook page (Facebook.com/ConnectionMags) and on our Twitter page (@Connection_Mags.) Why not pop along and “Like” or “Follow” so you get the news first. If you know a company or tradesperson that could do with more local promotion, why not suggest they give me a call. I’ve been helping local companies for more than 7 years. Mold Hospital Saved!

For the last six months a broad group of concerned residents from Mold and the surrounding towns and villages has been fighting Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s [BCUHB] proposals to close the Minor Injuries Unit and the X-Ray units at Mold Community Hospital. The fight to save Mold Hospital was spearheaded by “Save Our Hospital” action group which consisted of concerned individuals and groups having regular meetings in Mold Town Hall. Petitions, marches and letter writing were co-ordinated by this group in a concerted effort to pressurise BCUHB to change its proposals for Mold Hospital. The final decision on the future of Mold Hospital was made at the BCUHB meeting on Friday 18th January. As the chairman of the action committee, I am pleased to inform everyone that our case was accepted by BCUHB and Mold Hospital will retain the X-Ray Unit and the Minor Injuries Unit. In addition to this Mold has been granted “Hub Hospital” status which should ensure a glowing future for our Hospital. I would like to thank everyone who supported our fight weather by signing the petition, writing letters, marching or any other support given to this cause. The support was overwhelming and mobilised strong support and actions from every section of the population living in the area served by Mold Hospital (which is in the region of 60,000 people). As part of our fight, Friends of Mold Hospital, who formed a core part of the Action Group,

offered to purchase new X-Ray equipment to be installed in Mold Hospital. This equipment will cost in the region of £150,000.00 [One hundred and fifty thousand pounds]. Negotiations are currently in progress with BCUHB concerning this equipment. We now are concentrating our efforts on collecting funds for Friends of Mold Hospital to help them purchase this equipment. I ask all the organisations and individuals served by our hospital to join in with us to help raise this money. Donations can be given or sent to Beryl Powel, who is the chairperson of the Friends of Mold Hospital, collection boxes are located in Mold Hospital or donations can be handed in to Mold Town Hall. The Mayor of Mold will be holding a charity dinner at The Beauford Park Hotel in New Brighton, Mold on the 20th April 2013 as a celebration of this success and also to raise funds for the new X-Ray equipment. Tickets will be available from Mold Town Hall. Please support this event. Geoff Collett

What does the WI stand for? Friendship, education, community, equality, inspiring women. Each month we meet at some point in friendship but what else have we accomplished?

Community We began in March of this year by assisting Mold Town Council with their annual spring clean weekend, helping with the cleaning and assisting with refreshments. In April our members held an Easter Fayre at the Town Hall which raised £216 for WI funds. This was followed by assisting as stewards for a weekend at St. Mary’s church for their Virgin Art exhibition and the Flower Festival. The summer proved to be a very busy period for members, being called on to help with the Jubilee celebrations, with the successful Tea Dance in June raising funds, followed by our Strawberry Tea raising £225 for the national campaign for ‘breast cancer care’. In August Mold WI entered the Flint and Denbigh show where some of our members won awards. In September we manned a marquee at the Food Festival over a weekend to sell items of craft and produce. Recently, on hearing of the possible closure of the minor injury unit at Mold hospital, Ginny rallied the support of members to petition and march the streets of Mold, to assist our local community. Federation and National Outside of our local community we have an active craft group that assists with nationwide campaigns.

● Our craft group made 12 Olympic pennants.

● A knit and natter group raised over £47 for Denman College in Oxford a seat of learning for the WI

● Sewing pillowcase dresses for children in Africa.

● Knitting blankets for the premature baby unit in Wrexham.

As a group we support the Pennies for Friendship campaign aiming to help underprivileged women in Third World countries and during the year we have prepared boxes of food and treats for the soldiers in the Royal Welsh serving in Afghanistan. We have encouraged members to take part in regular exercise as part of the Big Walk Little Splash national campaign. Education and Entertainment Our entertainment has been very varied with an interesting programme which has included an insight into the Ancient Order of Froth Blowing; a talk by Lady Janet Jones on her time as the High Sherriff of Clwyd, Mark Baker who gave a talk on the Royal households, Mr. Laurie March who owned an Olympic horse that assisted in him in his recovery from an accident, Mike Deisha who walked the long distance journey following the way of St. James, El Camino de Santiago for International Evening. We have been entertained by a magician and Welsh country dancers, informed about Welsh witches from the Reverend Eirlys Griffiths through to examples of quilting by Cynthia Flitcroft. Trips have included:

● Bridgemere Garden Centre

● Deeside College for an evening meal

● The Pirates of Penzance in Wrexham

● An evening visit to Gladstone’s library at St. Deiniol’s, Hawarden.

● Harlech for a day trip Monthly meetings take place on the second Monday at 7 p.m. in the Masonic Hall, Earl Road, Mold. We are always pleased to welcome new members.
