his sample design is based on a typical 1,500 sq. ft. land-scape conversion, but can be easily adapted to the uniquedimensions of your yard. Mojave Accents brings the beauty and grace of the MojaveDesert to your back yard with the added benefits of hardy,water-smart plants that require less weekly maintenancethan a standard lawn. Other landscape tips using this design:

Allow room for trees in this landscape to attain theirmature size. Properly placed, trees can shade your home, reducing cooling demands in the warmer months.

Texas Ranger can grow as wide as 5 feet, so allow room in your landscape for these plants to mature.Large quantities of Texas Rangers are used in thisdesign to create dense borders and shaded areas. Youmay want to use fewer plants depending on your lotdimensions and budget.

Dalea makes a colorful groundcover thatis excellent for covering sloped or terracedareas in your landscape, and comes in avariety of colors, including Black Daleaand Sierra Gold.

Many plant varieties in this landscapedesign also can be planted in pots or color-ful containers that can be rearranged tocreate a dynamic and changing landscape.Consider running a drip line up throughthe bottom of the pot, so that containerplants can be watered using your existingdrip irrigation system.

New plants may need more water and carein the beginning but once established, trees and shrubs respond better to fewerbut deeper drip waterings.

Save lawn for the places you use it. Grassareas should be located away from yourhouse or block wall to prevent damagefrom overspray. Also, ensure sprinklers areproperly aligned and avoid placing grasson sloped areas to prevent runoff. Usecurbing around grass areas to create adecorative border and to help containwater to grass areas.

The lawn in this design is intended forrecreation and entertaining, is shaped toconform to this conceptual plan andmeets typical drought codes. If you usegrass in your landscape, ensure that itconforms to your sprinkler spray patternsto maximize water efficiency. If plantinggrass, consider warm-season varieties, such as Zoysia, St. Augustine, Bermuda orBuffalo grass to reduce water use.
