So You’re Out of College... Now What?

Where do you go to connect with other Jews your own age, who are in the same post-college/pre-congregation membership stage of life as you, to create meaningful Jewish experiences?

Do you ever feel out-of-place in those settings, like you’re not the demographic they’re targeting?

The Moishe House ModelThe center of the approach is an open, welcoming home, created and facilitated by a group of 3-5 young adults (residents), ages 21-30.

Moishe House residents come from a wide variety of Jewish backgrounds and are selected for their demonstrated leadership abilities and outgoing personalities.

Working together as a team, the residents plan and host a diverse range of low-barrier religious, cultural and social events in their home, including Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, Repair the World programs, and more.

In addition to planning their own programs, the house residents also support existing community resources by partnering with local Jewish organizations such as JCCs, synagogues, federations, and other institutional providers.

What is Our Vision for MoHo WeHa?

Wednesday, October 10, 12

Page 14: Moishe House West Hartford Info Session presentation

Our Mission

To provide an open, tolerant, and welcoming environment where Jews of all backgrounds and degrees of observance (as well as non-Jews) can feel accepted for who they are and comfortable to explore aspects of Judaism with which they may not be familiar or may not fully understand.

To that end, we will set certain guidelines:

Wednesday, October 10, 12

Page 15: Moishe House West Hartford Info Session presentation

Kashrut

We will keep a kosher kitchen, both for the experience of doing so, as well as out of respect for guests who may keep strictly kosher

You can still bring treyf into the house, but respect the sanctity of the kitchen (i.e. if you order in shrimp lo mein from Chinese delivery, use paper plates and plastic utensils).

Wednesday, October 10, 12

Page 16: Moishe House West Hartford Info Session presentation

Shabbat

We will be keeping Shomer Shabbos as a house, as we will be hosting Shabbat dinner every week.

If you have other plans outside the house, we will not guilt you about keeping Shomer Shabbos. We only ask that when you are at the house on Shabbat, you respect the holiness of our rest and try to experience it for yourself as well.

Interfaith Relationships

We see no problem with interfaith relationships (of either a romantic or platonic nature) and ask that you show respect and tolerance for them as well.

Above all else, our house will be a welcoming one.

But It’s Not Just About The Residents...

Wednesday, October 10, 12

Page 27: Moishe House West Hartford Info Session presentation

This is about communityThe goal of Moishe House IS NOT to provide us with a place to live and explore our Judaism – that is one of the benefits!

The goal is to create a hub from which a community can grow.

The house should be thought of as the community’s home.

Wednesday, October 10, 12

Page 28: Moishe House West Hartford Info Session presentation

Most importantly, we cannot do this alone...Moishe House is a truly grassroots effort – the only way this can work is with your support!

Even if you aren’t interested in being a resident, please consider joining our Chai Mitzvah or book groups, attending a Shabbat dinner or holiday celebration at the house, and helping to spread the word by telling everyone you know about MoHo WeHa!
