FIU MAC would be an addition to the Modesto Maidique Campus providing students with a place to relax, unwind, and learn how to express themselves. FIU currently lacks such an amenity. This center would allow students a place to explore and find their creative selves. The center also creates a beacon through architectural moves that is reflective of the outer architectural facade. FIU is meant to be Worlds Ahead, and the addition of this center will project it further than it has ever gone.

Project Synthesis

Project RationaleFlorida International University is a large state university that lacks a cultural hub on campus, but promotes cultural diversity. There is also little to no places where students can express themselves. This project gives FIU students a place to appreciate the different cultures present, while also providing outlets for socialization and individual expression.

Cultural Art Center

Origin of ConceptCreate a center that combines spaces by juxtaposing areas using deconstruvist methods.

Create regionalism throughout the center using vibrancy.

Create an unparalleled balance of interstitial spaces and nodes within the specific programmed spaces.

Design Guidance

The cultural center as a place for the cultivation and development of skills and practices necessary to produce artistic works.

“A lot of stuff gets stirred up and started in bars: protests, move-ments, sit-ins, and even the occasional revolution.” (Mitenbuler, n.d.)

The building is enclosed by 2 buildings, a parking garage on the (bottom left) and FIU’s Graham Center (top left). It’s also enclosed by streets all around that help define the edge conditions for the building and the parking lot out in front of the building itself.

The edge conditions of the building are defined by both its surroundings and the shell of the building itself. The surrounding concrete of the building includes both vegetation and pedestrian circulation (sidewalks) that determine where the beginning of the building is and the ending of circulation is.

The building does have its connection to the rest of FIU in terms of proximity to one of the main buildings on campus, Graham Center (top left). But the building also provides connection to the surrounding community due to its proximity to one of the main entrances of the school. Allowing both safe connection to the school but also allowing somewhat of an inviting experience for the surrounding community.

Parking happens both in the parking lot in the front of the building (bottom right) and the parking Garage (bottom left). Both parking zones provide both potential noise and traffic issues that can affect the building for people coming, going, and using the building.

Noise can have a potential impact on the users of the space if the space isn’t equipped with enough sound absorption materials. Noise can also be brought by the potential flow of the students the come in and out of the building and surround the building as well.

Traffic patterns can affect how people access the building depending on what’s exactly going on such as arriving to school, departure from school, and the events on campus.

DESCRIPTION: Tombolo Nissi Beach Playful Tombolo gets a little out of line. Two colors in the weft create strong horizontal stripes; the other four shift as subtly as the sandbars they were named for. Offered in 11 colorways—neutrals, classics and some adventurous combinations—that pass 50,000 double rubs (Wyzenbeek, Wire Screen), Tombolo’s not just for the great outdoors. A GreenShield finish and bleach cleanability make the 54” upholstery an easy-to-clean option for breakfast nooks, cafeterias and bars. That, and Tombolo joins the Brentano Green line with 100% Bella-Dura solution-dyed polyolefin, a petroleum by-product.
