The Music of EarthThe poetry of the earth is not made of wordsThe springs, the streams weave some dreamsThe music, the rhythm and rhyme is created by the tinkling wind chimesThe blowing breeze never ceasesto string lyrics, there is music even when the ice thaws or the water freezes. The ripples and the waves splish, splash and splatterThe rain patters, the flurry adds music with its crash ,clash and clatter The poetry of earth can be heard and it can be felt The flowers of grass are so close to the earthon their soft petals it is speltYou can hear the poetry of the glistening dewJohn Keats rightly said’ The Poetry of the Earth isnever dead’Keep it green and every day she’ll recite somethingnew in lieu to hear that soft music just carefully tread..,

HISTORY OF VAID MOHYALSAncestors of VAIDS ruled over Punjab for almost two centuriesfrom c. 815 CE, while ancestors of DATTS were ruling in Kabul. The Vaid Rajas were: Bachan Pala from 815 CE; Maharaja

Ran Singh 866 CE; MaharajaBir Singh 891 CE; MaharajaPrithvi Pal 936 CE. Datta rulersof Kabul were: Samanta Devac. 860 CE, Kamal Varman c.895 CE and Bhima Deva c. 921CE. Bhimadeva had no maleheir: only one daughter marriedin Kashmir (Rajatarangini).Bhimadeva merged hiskingdom of Kabul with Punjaband Jaya Pala, son of PrithviPal, became the ruler of thecombined kingdom (c. 964 CE)from Sirhind to Kabul (Ferishta). He styled himself asJayapaladeva, combining the

last names of both dynasties. Meanwhile, a strong TurkSultanate arose at Ghazni. These Turks conquered severalterritories of their erstwhile masters, the Samanids of Bukhara, and became very strong. Jaya Pala attacked Ghazni twice tonip this evil in bud but failed and Afghanistan part of his kingdomwas lost in retaliation. His son Ananda Pal, grandson TrilochanaPala and great grandson Bhima Pala, continued to valiantlyresist attacks by Mahmud Ghaznavi on Punjab. The history ofthese Vaid and Datt rulers has been covered in detail, in ourbook Afghanistan Revisited, available from the office of GeneralMohyal Sabha. After the death of Bhima Pal (1026 CE), his family (sons RudraPala and Duar Pala) found shelter, first in the Hindu state ofKashmir and later under Ajmer. Gorakh Rai of that dynasty, greatgreat grandson of Bhima Pala, was very close to his patron,Prithvi Raj Chauhan. He died at Traori battle field, fightingagainst Mohammad Ghauri in 1192. One of his sons BrahmaDev, along with his mother and other relatives, moved towardsthe north and found refuge in the hilly tracts of Shimla. There isno trace of their whereabouts for the next two centuries. However, the Vaid royal family, like their ancestors, came underthe patronage of the Hindu kingdom of Jammu.Timur Ling, attacked India in 1398. Devastating Multan, Bhatner,Delhi and killing lakhs of Hindus, he captured many more. Somany captives had been taken by the Mongol army that “therewas none so humble but had at least twenty slaves”. For hisreturn journey, Timur had taken a route along the ShivalakRange. His progress was marked by the almost daily massacreof large body of Hindus. To defend themselves armed groupsof Hindus appeared to oppose Timur but they were no matchfor the Mongol cavalry. Two Hindu contingents who resistedobstinately were slaughtered near Haridwar. Carrying cartloadsof booty and thousands of prisoners, when Timur reached theJammu region, Hindus put up very stiff resistance. It is on recordthat Timur had to fight twenty pitched battles between January24 and February 23, 1399 in the neighbourhood ofJammu.1According to Islahe Mohyali , during theseengagements, Shiv Datt Vaid, a descendant of Gorakh Rai,displayed unusual gallantry and many Hindu captives werefreed. Pleased by this achievement, Maldev the ruler of Jammu, appointed Shiv Datt as the Raja (governor) of Sambha, withthe title of Rai.2

Shiv Datt had four sons, namely, Ganpati, Ram, Chhattar, andGanga Ram. On his death he was succeeded by Ganpati.Jawahar, Rishi Dev, Hari Har (a.k.a Har Har Chanda), Atma,

Chaturbhuj and Bhima (or Bhilam) were the successors fromthe next six generations. Then came Raja Auo Dev, son of Bhim, who made a mark for himself. In 1725, when Maharaja RanjitDeo ascended the throne of Jammu, he bestowed special rankson the chiefs of states under his jurisdiction, like Jasrota, Bhandil,Malkot and Sambha, and asked them to be part of his court (inthe style of the Mughals). So Auo Dev built his palace at Jammuand shifted his residence there. The administration of Sambhawas entrusted to his heir designate, Murar Das. After the demiseof Auo Dev and Murar Das, the state of Sambha was merged inthe kingdom of Jammu. The palace of Auo Dev at Jammu wasalso acquired by the kingdom for its expanding requirements.3

The rise and decline of this Vaid family of Sambha was linkedwith the fortunes of the state of Jammu. Maharaja Ranjit Deowas a man of great administrative ability. Taking advantage ofthe confused political situation in Punjab, owing to the declineof Mughal rule, Durrani (Abdali) invasions and the rise of theSikhs, Ranjit Deo extended his authority over all the hills situatedbetween the rivers Chenab and Ravi. His dominions extendedinto the plains to the northern part of Sialkot district (includingthe parganas of Zafarwal i.e. Kanjrur and Shakargarh). It was atime of upheavals and lawlessness “yet his little state was anabode of peace and safety (dar-ul-aman).” Even rich bankers, merchants and high officials of Lahore and Delhi, both Hindusand Musalmans, found a place of refuge at Jammu. DuringAhmad Shah Abdali’s third invasion (December 1751 to March1752) Muin-ul-Mulk, the governor of Punjab, sent his family andtreasures to the care of Ranjit Deo of Jammu. However, RanjitDeo could not escape the Sikhs. About 1770, he himselfsubmitted to Jhanda Singh Bhangi and agreed to pay tribute. On Ranjit Deo’s death in 1781, he was succeeded by his sonBrij Raj Deo during whose rule the Jammu state camecompletely under the subjection of Sikhs.4

Anarchy must have prevailed in this “abode of peace and safety”– like the rest of the Punjab. As is common in such situation this“classy” Vaid clan of Sambha moved to different places in searchof safety and livelihood. According to P. N. Bali, “Sambha hasnow been orphaned and only a single Vaid family of RaizadaSita Ram, ASI Police (Retired) lives there.”5

Four distinct Vaid family lines (Thammas, or pillars, in socialparlance) became prominent. These ancestral lineages were:Har Har Chanda, Ram, Gangu and Chhattar. But after lapse ofsome time, four other lineages held prominence. These were:Auo-Ana (named after Auo Dev); Samyala (after his nativeplace); Ratnagiri (after the name of his mother) and Dharekadiye(after their ancestral residence in district Gujrat).Lakha Singh, a prominent personality from the clan of Auo Dev,led a section of the Vaid émigrés from Jammu to Mirpur. BhanSingh and his younger brother Ishar Das of this Vaid clan shiftedfrom Mirpur to Sukho (a village in Tehsil Gujarkhan, DistrictRawal Pindi).Vaids who are descended from this ‘royal’ family of Sambhause the title of Raizada. It is understandable why Vaids venerateSambha.References6Wolseley Haig, The Cambridge History of India, Vol. III, p.200.7Raizada Harichand Vaid, GulshaneMohyali, Vol. II, p. 135 ff.8Raizada Harichand Vaid, GulshaneMohyali, Vol. II, p. 139.9The Maratha Supremacy,Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Bombay, 1971),pp. 162-63.10P.N.
