What is the issue?

Prior to the Christchurch earthquake, the word ‘liquefaction’ was very

much an unknown. What is your understanding of liquefaction, and through your

research, in what ways, if any, can we prepare to deal with this

phenomenon?

THE HIDDEN MONSTER

LIQUEFACTION!

LIQUEFACTION!THE UNKNOWN

MONSTER!

•WHAT IS LIQUEFACTION

•What is Liquefaction made of ?Liquefaction is a layer of sandy saturated soils-soft earth•Sediment layers-loose hard material stones/rocks•Grainy saturated layers of water

This is our liquefaction Video!

•The earth continues to shake• The shaking makes the small soft sandy earth particles vibrate• The water beneath rises up through the ground and mixes with the soft soil• This turns the soil to a sticky wet dangerous custard, like quick-sand.WHAT CAN WE DO?• DO NOT build on the soft and sandy earth.IF NOT THEN WHAT?• Design re-in forced buildings to handle the shaking and turning of soft soil to a liquid.• Look at the foundations of the houses and buildings being built. Make the houses move with the shaking. Make the houses sit higher above the earth. Strength the soil.

Why Does Liquefaction Occur?

TO CHANGE THE STRUCTURE OF THE SOIL BY PUMPING IN ANOTHER MATERIAL TO STRENGTHEN IT.

THE KNOWN MONSTER!

LIQUEFACTION!WHEN WE KNOW WHAT THE ISSUES ARE, WHEN WE KNOW

WHAT THE PROBLEMS ARETHEN WE WILL KNOW HOW TO WORK TOWARD FIXING THEM

1. Learn which homes and structures were affected, and which ones weren’t.

2. Design more earthquake-liquefaction resistant homes.3. Educate locals to build their skill sets using disaster-resistant technologies.

4. Stimulate local demand for new types of housing and design.5. Measure the change over time.
