SUMMARY

The word astrology means the study of stars. Astrologers study the influence that stars
and planets have on people’s lives. They believe that the position of the sun, stars, moon
and planets at the time of your birth influences your personality and your future.
There are 12 zodiac signs divided into 4 groups based on the elements Fire, Air, Water
and Earth.
Fire signs are very intense, exciting and creative. Earth signs are stable and methodical.
Air signs are very friendly and intellectual. Finally Water signs are very emotional and
intuitive.
Astrologers organise the signs into a circle called the zodiac wheel. People are most
compatible with the sign opposite them in the wheel. Fire-Air and Water-Earth
combinations are good, Water-Fire and Earth-Air are bad!

UNDERLINE THE FUTURE FORMS
I think life in the year 2112 will be very different from life today. I will probably live in a house underwater. It
will be very modern. My father will work in a submarine. I won’t go to school but my parents will teach me at
home with computers and we will communicate with other people by means of special telephones.
There will also be special sports centres to keep fit. People won’t eat food like today, we will take pills full of
vitamins. I don’t think it will be easy to live underwater but after sometime we will get use to it.
Perhaps I will miss my life on Earth and my holidays at the seaside.
So, enjoy your life with all your heart.

I had such a blast last night at our school’s Penny Carnival. It is held every year to raise money for the
poor. The tickets were only 25 cents each or five for a dollar. I tried making hoops with a basketball, arm
wrestling, and guessing how many candies were in the jar. The fish pond was my favorite. I pulled out a
beautiful purse on my line. Mr. Hall, our principal, was a good sport. He was the target at the sponge toss. Boy,
did he get wet! My friends and I had such a good time at the Penny Carnival!

Pronunciation
sw- in sweet and sweater
spr- in spray and spring
str- in stripe and strap
We use the passive voice when we are more interested in the action itself rather than in “who” or “what” did the action.
The agent can be: * unimportant – “These shoes are made in Indonesia.” (the action is
more important than who made the shoes) * unknown – “The windows were broken yesterday.” (somebody
broke the windows and we don’t know who did it) * implicit – “He was arrested.” (most certainly by the police)
Basic steps to form the passive voice: The object of the active becomes the subject of the passive. We add the auxiliary “to be” – “is/are” when the main verb of the active is present, and “was/were” when it
is past. In negative or interrogative sentences the auxiliary “to do” is replaced by “to be”: - do(n’t) / does(n’t) become is(n’t) / are(n’t); - did(n’t) becomes was(n’t) or were(n’t).
We turn the main verb of the active into the past participle. If we need or want to add the agent of the passive, we must use “by”.
1 2 4 5
A. Complete the blanks with is/are + participle. 1) Computers __________________ (sell) in many different stores. 2) English ___________________________ (speak) almost everywhere. 3) _______ these shoes ___________ (design) in Portugal? 4) Less ice-cream __________________ (eat) in the winter. 5) Spanish ___________________ (teach) in my school too. 6) Fashionable clothes ___________________ (wear) both by boys and girls. 7) Many people ____________________ (influence) by the media. 8) Lots of TV ____________________ (watch) nowadays.
B. Rewrite the sentences in the passive – use the “by” agent only when necessary. 1) He takes Linda to school every day. _______________________________________________ 2) They don’t close the shops on Saturdays. _______________________________________________ 3) When does Mike feed the dog? _______________________________________________ 4) Michael wins every competition. _______________________________________________ 5) People invent new things all the time. _______________________________________________ 6) Does your mother always prepare your breakfast? _______________________________________________ 7) We don’t wear school uniforms in this school. _______________________________________________ 8) He keeps his money in a safe place. _______________________________________________ 9) My mother buys all my clothes. _______________________________________________ 10) Do you sell safety-pins in your store? _______________________________________________

A man has been rescued from a near-fatal attack by a tiger in northern Malaysia by his wife.
She entered the fray wielding a wooden soup ladle at the tiger - which fled.
Tambun Gediu, now badly lacerated and recovering in hospital, had tried hitting the tiger away in
vain and says his wife saved his life.
Wildlife rangers plan to track the tiger and send it further into dense, unpopulated jungle in the
northern state of Perak.
"I was trailing a squirrel and crouched to shoot it with my blowpipe when I saw the tiger.
"That's when I realised that I was being trailed," Mr Gediu said after surgery.
The tiger pounced not far from the Gediu home in a jungle settlement of the Jahai tribe.
Mr. Gediu had tried climbing a tree to escape the animal, but was dragged down by the tiger.
His wife, 55-year old Han Besau, rushed out of the kitchen on hearing his screams and used the
kitchen implement to good effect.
"I was terrified and I used all my strength to punch the animal in the face, but it would not budge,"
the New Straits Times newspaper quoted him as saying.
"I had to wrestle with it to keep its jaws away from me, and it would have clawed me to death if my
wife had not arrived."
It was the first time anyone in the village had been attacked by a tiger.
The director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in the state, Shabrina Mohd Shariff,
estimated that there were about 200 tigers in the jungles of Perak.
She added that five had been spotted near the major East-West Highway in the region.
