Martin married3,4 Freelove WRIGHT on 12 Nov 1796 in Rutland, VT. Freelove was born3 28 Oct 1774 in Rutland, VT.

BIOGRAPHY: She was named for her mother; and after marriage she lived first at Pittsford, VT, where her husband cleared up a farm of heavy timber, built good buildings, and set out a fine apple orchard before removing to Underhill after ten years.

24 Apr 2006 Page 3Modified Register for Martin MEAD

BIOGRAPHY: She belonged to the First Congregational Church of Underhill from Oct. 28, 1808 for over fifty years. For years before her death she was nearly blind. She was buried in the cemetery at Underhill Flats. Her obituary in the current papers was:

BIOGRAPHY: Died in Underhill Nov. 24 widow Freelove Mead, relict of Martin Mead, in the eight-fifth year of her age. The departed has long sustained an honorable standing in the Congregational church; she leaves behind her ten children, fifty-one grandchildren, and more than thirty of the fourth generation, a large company of whom shed tears on the day of her burial.

BIOGRAPHY: In 1915 520 descendants of hers were counted. She was a woman of marked characteristics and unusual ability. Her fearless and daring spirit are illustrated by the following anecdote. A few years after removing to Underhill she went back to visit (the Footes?) in Cornwall, unaccompanied, on horseback with a baby in her lap and a little one behind. Having a new saddle of which she was very choice, and not wishing to wet the girth when they forded the Onion River, she dismounted, unfastened the saddlegirth and threw it up over the saddle, mounted again, and crossed safely. The saddle is now in possession of Clarance Powell of Cambridge.

BIOGRAPHY: For years they had no stove, and depended on an open fire for heat. Having no tablecloth she would wash off the bare round table after meals, and tip it up before the fireplace to dry; but in cold weather it would sometimes freeze before it was dry. She did not like the first stove at all, missing the bright glow of the fire; and she used to call it "the black old nigger," or "the nigger wench." Mercy Jane Wilbur, her granddaughter, remembered using to fill her pipe for her. She was a short, stout, blind old woman, full of merriment, who would "shake shen she laughed, like a bowl of jelly."

BIOGRAPHY: Whenever an infant was expected in the family of her daughter, Mercy Morse of North Underhill, she would go up there on horseback, taking with her a small hair-covered trunk fastened on behind the saddle. The children were told that the baby was brought in this.

They had the following children:
