ModestR is a software tool, made up of four interrelated applications: MapMaker, DataManager,MRMapping and MRFinder. It is aimed to provide academic community (particularly people involved inecology and biodiversity management) with a powerful but easy-to-use tool for working with speciesdistribution maps and taxonomic data. ModestR has been designed to be easy and intuitive to use, butproviding powerful features. Most of the functions, even complex ones, are very easy to use. It allowsyou to equally work with range maps (areas), sample maps (occurrence records) or even a mix of both, importing data from GBIF, CSV files, shapefiles, etc.ModestR works basing on species habitats. You can select allowed habitats for each species. Then, forexample, ModestR can automatically filter occurrence records, or calculate extent of occurrence onlytaking into account species allowed habitats. With ModestR you can create species distributiondatabases structured on a taxonomic hierarchy, and work with any taxonomic group as a whole, quite aseasily as with a single species.

ModestR is designed to perform complex or time consuming tasks on any group of species in a batchway. For example, you can launch a task to download data from GBIF for any taxonomic group (a class,an order…), or apply a convex hull transformation in an entire database, in a single operation. This way, working with thousands of species distribution maps is made quite easy. You can also perform several analyses and summarized data for any taxonomic group: AOO, EOO,richness, gradients, metrics, etc.ModestR can also integrate environmental variables in an easy way, to use them in data cleaning, nicheestimation, or to generate reports that merge species distribution data and environmental data. Youcan easily search for species in any region of the world and generate reports, just by selecting thewanted region in the map.ModestR allows exchanging data in several formats (ASC, shapefile, CSV, KML…). So you can easilyimport existing distribution data to ModestR, or export ModestR outputs to post-process them in R,for example.ModestR is continuously improving with new features, such as powerful mapping features.
