Greetings Modesto Fans:
Being a Murphy in March is always fun. That is what it was so great to do some Irish family history investigation and trace our Murphy and McNulty heritage. After visiting, Cork, Kinsale, Galway, Dublin and so many other places, I am even more proud of my Irish heritage and it makes every St Patrick’s Day fun and you really can taste the difference between Guinness and Murphy’s. I prefer Murphy’s and it is only brewed in Cork. Modesto is really getting up to racing speed this month. We have the famous LuckyFest on 11th Street to bring out your inner Irish. Also this month, we celebrate our youth and remember the times at summer camp with the Brett Dennen / Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit benefit for Camp Jack Hazard and we hear some amazing camp stories. Our Symphony goes Italian, the schools present their spring drama performances, the high school swimmers hit the pool, and the ultimate signal that spring is here in Modesto is the opening of the Modesto Certified Farmers Market. Oh so tasty and everyone in Modesto should start their weekends out at the market every Saturday morning beginning Mar 30. ModestoView is proud to be a lead sponsor this year.Well, the national rankings are out and as usual, the people that make these lists don’t ever visit Modesto. No city that has all things we have do to, our American Graffiti history, our music and arts scene, our tasty dining and our community events could ever be con-sidered a bottom city. Modesto USA is a TOP USA CITY in so many ways. Every month here in ModestoView, we showcase everything good. If you want to smile about Modesto? Read and follow ModestoView. If you want your friends to know the good things about Modesto? Send them our links and have them like us at facebook.com/modestoview Send the editors of the magazines, these links and hopefully they will get the picture. Spring is the time to get out and about. The evenings are getting longer and you need to check out the amazing new mural featuring our American Graffiti heritage high up on the walls of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. This was a ModestoView, Peer Recovery, Sierra Pacific and Aaron Vickery production and it looks awesome! We have so much talent here in town. So for your March wishes we say: (raise your glass) Best to all of you that celebrate and live life and love local. May we eat, drink, listen, give, shop local and make our fair city strong healthy and vibrant! Enjoy your March and thanks to all of you that read ModestoView and thanks to our ad-vertisers than allow us to print and distribute this wonderful monthly magazine. Thank you all for being good citizens and friends.Chris MurphyPublisher – ModestoView Serving Civic Pride Since [email protected]

This month, ModestoView goes to camp. Sitting around our campfire is the amaz-ing Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit that has been burning it up all over the west coast with their super fun shows and brand new CD. They are teaming up with the world-famous fellow Oakdale native Brett Dennen looking over them in the moon with a howling coyote. Howdy Campers!by ModestoFamous/Ruben Porras
Publishers Note:It is so great to have Ruben Porras as a Modesto-ViewCrew leader. His never ending energy for our city is there through his health ups and downs and I am really proud he is a friend and our in-trepid Senior Editor. Thanks Chris
Howdy campers! You know that I have to open with that based on the theme of this issue. Right now I am in my downtown apartment and I have a raging campfire go-ing in my living room. These s’mores are tasty, but for some reason men in giant red trucks with ladders attached just pulled up. That’s strange! They don’t look happy! So, let’s talk about what I’ve been up to. February was a crazy month for me per-sonally and professionally and I am very excited about new changes that I’ve made and challenges that I’ve accepted. Here’s a quick rundown of my February-Professionally, I became the social media voice for the Gallo Center for the Arts and that has really opened up my world in re-gard to music, theatre and so much more. I love it! In just one month in the position, I have met a celebrated magician, taken in a number of exciting shows, attended their annual Back to Black black-tie gala and became the proud owner of a pair of their adult sippy cups! Good times! Personally, I received some very solid blood test results along with the news that I’m no longer at risk to just fall over and die at any moment and I have fallen in love even more with my beautiful girlfriend. I am so happy with her that I have agreed to make her daughter a much bigger part of our lives. We are becoming a family! I use an exclamation mark there because I am thrilled. I am excited. I am ready. We are going to be the most colorful, musical, artistic, perfectly dysfunctional and adven-turous group of Brady Bunch wannabes ever and we are going to fight like hell to keep our love alive. That’s our deal. We will love like crazy. Sounds great to me!March will be an interesting month for me and a fun month in Modesto. I’ll turn 38, meet Elvis impersonators, Shrek and a few country music stars, spend long nights with hilarious drag queens at ClimaX Bar and Nightclub and take a million photos. I just bought a tiny portable camera that fits in my ridiculous man purse and I have
been newly inspired to get out and shoot things. That’s a nice feeling!Get out and do good things this month in Modesto! Have breakfast every Sunday morning with us at Deva Cafe where the Poorhouse Millionaires make us feel like we are at a special type of musical church full of amazing friends, watch a few movies at Brenden Theatres and the State Theatre, attend as many live music shows as possible and take the time to dance like crazy when-ever possible. If money allows, buy a piece of art from Mark Holden, Jen Coffey, Jim Christensen, Jeff Moore, Stacey Penland or another local artist and hang it proudly in your home. Allow it to inspire you. Allow it
to make you feel alive. If that can’t happen, take the time to look at all the new murals popping up in town. The new Aaron Vick-ery piece on the Chamber of Commerce of-fices is incredible!Keep in touch with me this month. Email me at HYPERLINK “mailto:[email protected]” for any reason and follow me on Twitter where I have been known as @ModestoFamous for nearly six years. Wow! Time flies!Have a great month in Modesto! We live in a beautiful special place and we need to keep it thriving and growing in a positive direction. Smile today. Smile every chance that you can. Embrace life.

Maps are $10 with Students under 18 Free, and available at the March 2nd Acoustic Rock Society Art and Music of Our Own at Center Stage Conservatory lower level studio. They are also available at local galleries all month up until tour weekend, and the free Open Stu-dio preview show at Gallo Center April 4. Open Studio Tour weekend is April 6 and 7. For more information check the web site stanislausaos.wordpress.com The maps include a form to enter a draw-ing to win one of the five available purchase prize award winners, each an original piece of art by a local artist on the tour. You must submit the form into a collection box at one of the artist studios to be in the draw-ing. The Purchase Prize pieces and sam-pling from all 57 artists will be on display at the Preview Show at Gallo Center 10am to 6 pm. The Annual Central California Art Asso-ciation Spring Show at Mistlin Gallery has a call for entries due March 9. Entry open to all artists, at $10 entry for members, $15
non members in five categories. Mistlin Gallery is currently showing an invitational ceramics and glass show with the Almond Blossoms members show. Next show com-ing up is Shades of Gray, limited to works in black and white media, offset by a pastel show by artists Carole David and Dierdre Wolfey.Next door at the Building Imagination Center, is the “History of Stickers” show organized by Modesto Art Museum. Char-treuse Muse “Art of Tea” show ends March 23, with a featured Tea Ceremony at 3 pm with a bay area Tea Master who is also one of the featured artists.
Jack Morris, who organizes the Chartreuse Muse life drawing group, won “Best of Show” in the recent Tracy Art League “Ex-pressions” annual show. Jack can often be found every other Saturday as announced, in the upstairs gallery at the Muse, 10 am to 1 pm, collecting the $10 for the three hour model sessions.Third Thursday Art Walk is now in its Tenth year, so pick up a new map. Check the “Artists of Modesto” facebook page for any off the map spots open Art Walk night, as I post them as I hear of them. Linda Knoll was set up in February at The Sand Bar, where she has also painted the murals.
My own sharpie mural at Tresetti’s took on a 3-d and interactive aspect, as staff deco-rated it with masks for Fat Tuesday, much to my delight and surprise, as it worked. Café Bliss in Oakdale has a sharpie art show this month. Our thanks to Matty Comer for organizing the Acoustic Rock Society Art and Music of Our Own expo at Center Stage Conservatory lower level studio. For future reference to patrons, it is the basement level of the same building as the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, now marked by the new mural by Aaron Vickery.

Two quick matters to address before we begin-- Firstly, I sincerely apologize to any-one I might have offended with last month’s article in regard to the venereal disease matter. Secondly, I am amazingly flattered so many of you read me! I’ve met more ModestoView readers in the past month than I have in the four years I’ve done the article. I guess the trick is I need to put lowbrow in here more often. Moving on-- During this past month I kept hearing bar people buzz about this place in Riverbank. Amazing beer and enormous liquor selec-tion, they said. Giant T.V.s and pool tables and poker nights, they said. Great atmos-phere and cute bartenders, they said. “In Riverbank? Are you sure?” I said. And you know what? They were right. The 108 may look unassuming from the front, but in the inside is… I’m going to use the word magical for the hell of it. Over 500 bottles of the most beautiful alcohol sit on lofty glass shelving and over 35 rotating beer tap selections. Picture BevMo with a bartender, if you will. This is apparently the reaction the 108 is going for. “People get overwhelmed when they come in. We want to offer the larg-est selection of alcohol in the Central Val-ley here,” says bar manager Laura Burke, who has been bartending at the 108 since day one. They are currently winning by my standards. The shelving boasts every vari-ety of Johnny Walker (including the King George label), a collection of moonshine, a frightening amount of tequila, and enough whiskey to make you swoon. Taps include, but are not limited to: Arrogant Bastard, Stone IPA, Hoptimum, Werewolf, Bigfoot, Goose Island…you get the general idea. Did I mention 500 liquor bottles? Just

making sure.I am generally uncomfortable in sports bars. It is a completely foreign social circle to me and my knowledge of who’s-playing-who is usually boiled down to what colors the opposing teams are wearing. This be-ing said, the 108 is a sports bar, but not in the most traditional sense. There are pool tables, dartboards, shuffleboard, and ten flat screen TV’s all playing different events at all times, yes. But they play everything, says Burke, from UFC, MLB, NBA, GIN, NFL, MLB, NHL, to Shark Week (order a Shark Bite cocktail, includes fun blood ef-fect). And there’s so much delicious alco-hol it would be hard for a nun not to have fun. Now, despite being painfully Irish (I get sunburned under a 20-watt light bulb), I always seem to get sick on St. Paddy’s day and am unable to go out. I have figured out it’s likely my liver’s built-in defense mecha-
nism from preventing me from finding out how many car-bombs I actually can handle (answer: 7). I am upping my Vitamin C regiment, however, so there isn’t any worry I won’t be able to attend the 108’s St. Pad-dy’s event. There is literally a St. Paddy’s countdown clock on the 108’s wall; it’s a big event. The Sunday the 17th event will fea-ture a variety of merch girls from various Irish labels (read: Guinness, Baileys, Bush, etc.) doing give-aways, free corn beef and cabbage, Irish music, and (duh) green beer. It’s basically going to ensure a Monday call-in sick day. Just forewarning you.I was pre-prepared to be bored for this ‘sports bar’ interview, but with Laura and bartender Christina Gonsalves serving out amazing drinks and feeding me knowledge about the amazing array of bottles, the goings-on of 108, and generally just being lovely people, I will willingly admit that I was nothing but impressed and that the 108
108’s Liquid MJ-2 count Malibu-2 count Capt. Morgan-2 count Midori-1 count Blue Curacao-Sweet & Sour-Shake and strain into a tall ice-filled glass
was an amazing new find for me. I was al-most hesitant to do a write on up it because I thought it was such a find and I didn’t want to share, but I decided to be nice, just this once. But that means if you ever see me there the least you could do is buy me a “thank you for telling me about this place Kate” drink. Fair is fair, people.Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Kate and Phil!

rely solely on the delicious food. Staffing and service make all the difference. So when I met Kristin O’Brien, Skewers gen-eral manager, a total hottie at age 37, I was like wow, your dedication to Skewers has to be the only reason you are single! We both smiled and laughed inwardly as I can see how much she loves Skewers and her rewarding career. I still want to find her a great date! It was also delightful to be wait-
ed on by Erin. She has a genuinely happy demeanor and a professional work ethic. That is so refreshing to experience espe-cially from one so young.Plate after plate, Brad was ecstatic for me to try everything! No argument here! I started with the Mediterranean sampler, Dolma, Hummus, Eggplant Dip, Shiraz Salad, and Cucumber Dip made with homemade yogurt! Only $12 to try all that! I also
dined on Rack of Lamb & Garlic Saffron Chicken that can be summed up in a word, Dana~licious!!! The rice was amazing, the lightest basmati I’ve ever had. The rice is a recipe that is 1000’s of years old stem-ming from the Persian culture that takes 24 hours to prepare. Somehow I managed to find room for 2 desserts! Crème Brule and Baklava flown in from Detroit as Brad said he’d only serve the best! Wow!Come to Skewers for the food, the ser-vice, the pleasing atmosphere, or perhaps for the happy hour Mon. thru Fri. 4-7pm with $3 appetizers including mini skewers, $3 cocktails, and $2 beers. Get your extra savings via value gift certificates sold at Costco. Skewers also have banquet rooms accommodating up to 100 people. On Sat-urday nights from 7-9pm don’t miss the live belly-dancer performing throughout the restaurant. She entertains the guests with traditional Mediterranean cultural dancing as she heightens the dining experience.Modesto View signature question: Beatles or Stones? Brad answered both are way out of my age range! Whatever I still don’t feel old!!! So he made a bad guess of Beatles over Stones, but all is forgiven as I’m still enjoying all the leftover he generously sent me home with!Skewers (Kabob House)906 J Street (corner of J & 9th)Modesto, CA 95356(209) 525-3611Hours: Mon-Wed 11am to 9:30pmThursday & Friday 11am to 2amSaturday Noon to 2amSunday Noon to 9pmFace book: Skewerswww.skewerskabobhouse.com
Do not fry me! As my dining choices con-tinue to get more spoiled and selective, I was most delighted by my very first ex-perience at the renowned Skewers Kabob House. I am a mega carnivore and there is something cool about biting delectable meats off of a skewer! Grilled meats are especially flavorful with the perfect bal-ance of herbs and spices to enhance the meat without over-powering it. Skewers have impressively showcased this from the menu to the table.Brad Morad and his dad, Jonathan Morad have been 50-50 partners in their restau-rant sensation for 10 years this April. Skew-ers inhabits the location formerly Lotus Restaurant that was in business for 48 as-tounding years! Brad, spry at 38, is hands-on throughout all the facets of the restau-rants day-to-day business. He has been married to his wife, Pauline, for 13 yrs. and they have 3 children. Naturally he loves kabobs and he confessed to liking moun-tain oysters (google that haha!),too! He’d like to open a second skewers right here in Modesto, of course I recommended in my neighborhood at Floyd and Roselle! Brad, the man is the chairman of DED (Down-town Entertainment District) as well as be-ing a board member of DID (Downtown Improvement District), impressive com-mitment to Modesto to say the least! Thank you! Jonathan is the executive chef and can be found at the restaurant 7 days a week! His wife Florence has conveniently opened Passion Boutique in Feb. 2013 also on J St. The family also owns Sapphire Hooka Lounge, and yes, it’s on J St.!The keys to a successful restaurant don’t

I have also have had numerous television appearances including being a featured guest on The Riki Lake Show three times and on The Maury Povich Show. I would have to say the most memorable appear-ance would have to be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno where I got to perform for American Idol Judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul. That was an amazing time and a once-in-a-life time opportunity.
MF: What goals do you have for your fu-ture?
MM: My ultimate goal in life is to live a happy and content life with my husband and my stepson. So far, I have been blessed to live an exciting life and have achieved a lot in my profession. I bet that some people would kill to be in my heels and live the life I live.
MF: How does your family feel about how you have chosen to live your life?
MM: I am blessed to have had a very sup-portive family since day-one. My parents are the greatest and have been to many of my shows throughout the years. They have accepted the path that I have taken to be-come a woman.
My mother is the one who taught me how to sew dresses. How much more supportive could parents be?
Being a step-mother and wife alone is my full-time job. I moonlight as a show direc-tor and female impersonator at night. I have worked in the past as a makeup artist, dance instructor, color guard teacher, hair dresser, dress designer and pageant con-sultant.

I continue to be impressed and inspired by the diversity that makes up Modesto. Meeting new people on a regular basis is always exciting and recently I have had the opportunity to meet a local artist that is ac-tually a world-famous celebrity in her field. What she does may not appeal to every-one, but her story is inspiring, intense and deeply interesting. You can Meet Maya Moore in person every Sunday night where she performs as Mizz Monique Moore during her Dragaliscious female impersonator revue at ClimaX Bar and Nightclub at 607 7th Street in down-town Modesto. Take the time to catch her act. It is sexy, funny and fast-paced. It is a great way to end a long weekend. This is the text of a Q & A interview that I recently did with the starlet:
MF: Tell me about yourself. I know that you were born a man but that your stage identity is that of a woman. How did you get started?
MM: First, I consider myself a woman. I have been dressing up ever since I was five years-old in my mother’s clothes and makeup.I started doing drag shows and became a female impersonator at the of 17 when I would sneak into clubs and per-form at in San Jose. After winning numer-ous drag contests, I knew that I had what it took to be a professional female imper-sonator.
MF: How far have you gone to change your body to become who you are today? How is your stage persona different than your daily persona?
MM: Lets just say that I have had quite a few procedures to enhance some areas of my body but that Cher and Joan Rivers still have me beat. I am basically the same per-son on and off stage. The only difference is that when I am on stage, I am a seductive enticing showgirl who wears a lot of make-up, rhinestone jewelry, wigs, and over-the-top costumes that I believe people would

die for. During the day, I am just a plain-Jane (LOL) with less make up, and I am much less flashy.
My character, Mizz Monique Moore is a sexy ,captivating, energetic, talented en-tertainer. I am basically the same confident person off stage without all the glitz and glamour. What people don’t realize and don’t see is that I live my life as a wife and step mother of a three year-old son. The sexy goddess they see on stage is really all an illusion.
MF: What are your greatest personal and professional successes?
MM: My greatest personal success is chang-ing my name and gender and getting legally married at the courthouse to my husband.
Professionally, I have been extremely lucky and blessed to have had national and inter-national exposure. I have competed in the three most prestigious pageants there are to compete in as a female impersonator in-
Years of dedication, personal insight and a major financial investment have made Maya Moore the woman that she is proud to be.

“Wearin’ o’the Green”by Ken White
My mother never met a holiday she didn’t like. Partly be-cause each one was a day to celebrate; a day off from the day-to-day. Plus, they were all fun in their own way. One of her favorites was March 17th – St. Patrick’s Day. It had nothing to do with being Irish, because she was Bavarian German. Or drinking, although she enjoyed a cocktail or two. Or shamrocks, although she was terminally superstitious. Or leprechauns, though I think she believed they really existed and would have dearly loved to find the pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow. For Madre, it was all about the “wearin’ o’ the green.” If you didn’t wear green on St. Patty’s Day, she would pinch you. Not an easy pinch, but a turn-the-skin-red and leave-a-white-mark twister. She loved catching us kids without our green on. Because she always trapped us first thing in the morning, when we were all still half-asleep, it was easy; eas-ier than fooling us on April Fool’s Day, but that’s another story. Of course, we’d be sure to add some green somewhere before we headed off to school, since every kid there had learned the same painful lesson at home and each was eager to apply it to their classmates. When we finally donned the green, it was usually someplace invisible so we could trick our attackers, since turna-bout was fair play if they were wrong. The pincher would thus become the pinchee. I’m pretty sure Mom didn’t know that the tradition originated with an Irish street
ballad written in 1798. And that green, which was one of the colors of the Irish flag and the shamrock, rep-resented the Irish rebellion from the British Empire,
whose national color was red, thanks to the Union Jack and their military uniforms. Because it became a sign of Irish patriot-ism, any Irishman caught wearing green was hanged on the spot by the Brits. I think if my mom had known the true history, she might have thought twice about threaten-ing us with the dreaded pinch if we didn’t wear the green. But, not likely. It tickled her too much.As far as the pinching part of the tradition, that was purely an American invention, which reportedly started in the early 1700s. Those early colonials believed that wearing green made you invisible to leprechauns, who would pinch anyone they could see, which meant anyone not wearing green. Kind of a vicious circle. People began pinching those who didn’t wear green as a reminder that the wee folk could see them, making them fair game, thus freeing the warner to sneak up and pinch the warnee before the little people did. It was silly, but fun.Holiday superstitions and rituals. They dot-ted the calendar and filled our days, passed from generation to generation. They con-tinue, but they’re not the same.
Sloshball! Aliens are coming! One of Modesto’s new monthly traditions is the super fun Sloshball at Enslen Park. Every 3rd Saturday, our friends all gather in their themed attire and get ready to raise their
cups to a fun-filled softball game. The rules are simple, you have to keep your glass filled and in your hand except when batting or throwing. Easy huh? This is a 21 and over event and you can check it out at facebook.com/ModestoSloshballMarch 23 – Alien Invasion Costumes 1 pm.

CAMPFIRE STORIES
Going to camp is one of life’s special treasures. Countless movies have been made, the pranks are legend-ary and the first love that blossomed make stories for the ages. Not all experiences turn out to be like Parent Trap, Meatballs, or Little Darlings, but there are so many of us that grew up going to these summer camps, making friends we have forever and a lifetime of stories to tell. For anyone that ever went to camp, there is something inside of us that stays with us, whether overcoming the fear of singing in front of people, act-ing crazy and fun, or toughing it out on a 50 mile hike or learning to cook or play the ukulele. Old Oak Ranch, Foothill Horizons, Boy Scout camps at Utica and so many more places are part of our local culture.

Camp Jack Hazard is one of the local camps and there are many stories to tell. It could have had a bad ending as the YMCA self destructed a few years ago, in the process putting Camp Jack Hazard at risk. The Jack and Buena Foundation was created to save the ranch and is now the proud owner of the Camp. On March 16, there will be an amazing fundraiser at the Gallo Center featuring Oakdale native and globally acclaimed singer songwriter Brett Dennen and the soon to be globally acclaimed Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. These musicians grew up playing together and their sound is amazing an they are donating their valuable time and talent for this fundraising concert. Jason Poisson, currently a teacher at Valley Charter High School will soon take the reins of the Jack & Buena Foundation as Executive Director and will make sure that there will be camp experiences at Jack Hazard for generations to come. Here are some of the great camp stories we received from our ModestoView readers. One of the first we received was from Brett Dennen. The next 3 of these were selected as our Camp Winners and received tickets to the Mar 16 event.
Brett DennenMy fondest memories of camp were always on the overnights. Watching our counselors prepare food over a fire, washing our dirty faces and hands in rivers and lakes. Of course, roasting marshmallows, putting mud on our faces and giving ourselves animal names. Hik-ing to the top of peaks and screaming in victory like we could accomplish anything. We learned how to have fun with less, explored our imaginations and the wild places within us while we were out there in the wild, even if it was just for a few days. We learned how to be comfort-able in nature, to appreciate it, learned new things about ourselves that I believe we can only truly learn when we are outside, and away from our normal comfort zones. I developed a love for the outdoors at a very young age, and I continue to rekindle that feeling every time I am in the mountains.
Barry Peterson, Modesto CaSo many fond Memories from foothill horizons...I started my trip on our hike accidentally sliding into the river, then had to hike all the way back as I got my know it all rear end chewed by our counselor. I promptly came down with a high fever and Bronchitis, which meant myself and one other camper had to be quarantined for the remainder of our trip. I also remember the bus ride home, Holding a girls hand and being so scared, we hid our hands under a pillow...romance at its finest. Wouldn’t trade the memory for anything!
Stella Johnson 1989, Hull Creek. Here is a story.... I was 6 months pregnant. It was my husband at the time, his best friend and his best friends wife who was also 6 months pregnant. First night, people across from us left in a hurry after we heard screams. It was 3 am... next day we tranferred to their spot, next to the creek. All day was kinda weird. Hearing loud stomps, grunts, etc... we go to sleep in our tents, scared because of the weird noises up in the forest... 3 am, something was sniffing around our tents. My husband friend screams, “I dont know what it is but it isn’t human!!!!” The guys jump out with machetti’s, rifles, we saw the foot prints in the dirt... and we left faster than cheetah’s run.. we swear it was bigfoot.... lol and I still think that..

Blessing Modesto once again with his Reverend ways, Jim “Reverend” Heath, front man of Reverend Horton Heat will be taking the stage at Fat Cat Music House and Lounge on March 7th. With local acts Eli Goodtimes & the Oldtimers along with the Pendletons. A little of everything from the young to us older folks.Reverend Horton Heat began his true career in 1985 with a mix of punk, coun-try, big band, surf and Rockabilly and the Cramps were a great influence on Jim’s musical adventures. In the 90’s Rev. built a strong cult following as a three piece band was a pychobilly rush for the cult followers.Updating their sound for future alterna-tive rock. EWALL AGES
March is here! I am a big fan of March partially because it is the month of the Irish (I think you can see I’m biased by my last name, Murphy) and also because it means that spring is on its way! Remember to bring out the green on St. Patrick’s Day so the other devoted St. Patrick’s Day fans don’t pinch you! This month is a crazy time for any high school seniors who are waiting on their college acceptance letters, so from a fellow hopeful student, good luck and try not to stress too much every time you open your mailbox or check your email. I know, it’s hard. Although many of us can’t wait to start our new lives whether it’s near or far, it’s nice to remember how great Modesto is. In the spirit of the Irish and luck I thought I would remind all of the young people just how lucky we are to live in the wonderful Modesto, California.
Reasons We’re Lucky to Live in Modesto:1. Amazing high schools and high school spirit.2. Youthful music scene (High Voltage, Josh Rosenblum, and Stop Motion Poetry)3. Friendliness of our community and city.4. New stores in downtown to peruse after a movie or coffee stop5. Small town, yet big city feel. It’s big enough to have fun things to do at night and to mix up our daily routine, but small
enough to know people we see around eve-ryday!6. Close proximity to fun things all over California. Let’s face it, we can drive an hour in any direction and be in a totally new places such as the ski slopes, San Fran-cisco, or the beach and be back before din-ner to relax! We have the best location and we appreciate our own town!7. AMAZING FOOD. There are sooo many local options in Modesto that when I go out
it takes me half an hour to decide where to grub! I always choose places such as Har-vest Moon (try the special with grilled cheese sandwiches as the BUNS on their burger), Papachino’s, Scenic Drive-In, La Parilla, and Sushi Garden when I’m getting hungry.8. Farmer’s Market is going to be back up again and this is one of my favorite things to do. Walking down the street viewing the art and wonderful produce while catching up with neighbors and friends really is a beautiful experience.9. Gallo Center provides big city names and shows right to our community! I have loved seeing productions such as Mamma Mia and performances by Steve Martin at this venue and love the fancy vibe walking up the stairs in that beautiful lobby.10. Beautiful parks such as Graceada and East La Loma Park that bring us back to playing tag in elementary school. It’s a nice, safe way to get in touch with nature and appreciate our beautiful valley, so pack a picnic and a Frisbee and head on out and get active!

Hello everyone March is here and I am very happy to say we are we are doing an-other Kickstarter fundraiser. This one is for a big concept that has everyone involved excited. We are bringing together 25 local musicians and 14 songwriters to create a compilation CD. All the songs are new to this project and we couldn’t be more happy about how things are shaping up. Curiosity is my most favorite characteris-tic. Curiosity makes a better world, it makes creative things happen. Without Curiosity, “What if?” would not exist. I can’t imag-ine a world without “What if?”. What If we could create a new kind of high school that would reach out to kids that wanted to learn in a new way, project based learn-ing, focus on teamwork and academia and guiding directly to college and be ready for the work force? Over 15 years ago, we had this “What If?” conversation at the Modesto Chamber of Commerce and this lead to the creation of the Valley Business High School and I am proud to be one of the founders along with other Chamber members. To-day Valley Charter High School contin-ues the “What if?” of secondary education and gains ground every year thanks to the leadership and curiosity of the leaders that teach and create an new smart and innova-tive generation. We catch up with Princi-pal Susan Nisan and English Teacher Jason Poisson and posed a few questions to them.
Principal Susan NisanModestoView: What is it that drives you to make this one of the most innovative schools in Modesto? Susan Nisan: My greatest source of motiva-tion at Valley Charter is the knowledge that our parents and our teachers are intensely devoted to our students’ futures. They want meaningful opportunities for our young people to develop their skills and tal-ents and to become adults with confidence and personal integrity. It is my mission as principal to expand those opportuni-ties and to work with teachers, parents and community members to launch each young person into the adult world ready to thrive. solving problems and interacting with peo-ple. When my daughter graduated from Valley Charter in 2003 she went through the same steps that our students follow to-day in developing a portfolio and making a presentation of her personal and academic accomplishments and goals to a panel of community volunteers during her Gradu-ation by Exhibition (GBE). The confidence that she gained in learning how to defend her goals and her work habits have been apparent as she completed a double major in music and theology. Her flexibility and willingness to learn new things have been critical to her success as an Americorps volunteer after college and her demanding job in the high-tech industry today. MV: What is the role of professionalism and respect in education?SN: At a small innovative charter school such as Valley Charter, the teaching pro-fession is truly both an art and a sci-ence. Charter school educators must be intensely creative and willing to prepare for many different roles as we interact with stu-dents, parents, colleagues and community members to design unique and supportive environments for learning. Students and parents place a great deal of trust in us and they respond well to the respect which they
deserve but may not experience in larger, less personal school settings. MV: How high can kids set their sights when they enter the Valley Charter School?SN: Our vision at Valley Charter is that students will be well equipped for college, career and community success. The paths that they may follow in achieving suc-cess in these areas are highly individual-ized. Many students graduate with more than a year of college already completed and move directly into a four-year univer-sity or transfer after completing additional units at Modesto Junior College. Valley Charter alumni can be found at our excel-lent local CSU Stanislaus, at Stanford Uni-versity, at private faith-based schools, and many other schools in a huge variety of majors. Other students have chosen mili-tary service in one of the US Armed Forces or work in ministry or community service. At Valley Charter we strive to give students connections, skills and habits of character that will bring them back to the Central Valley to improve life here for everyone, not only through their careers but also through the compassion and dedication they display in their family lives and com-munity activities. MV: How can kids be a part of this school?SN: To be a part of Valley Charter, stu-dents must be willing to take a higher level of responsibility. Valley Charter is a pub-lic school open at no cost to any student in Stanislaus County or adjacent counties who desires to attend and fully participate in the program. A student does not need permission from his or her neighborhood school to apply. Instead a student and his or her parents must make an active choice to enroll in and commit to attend a rigor-ous, college-preparatory school where stu-dents integrate character traits with subject matter and engaging activities to prepare for college coursework while they are still in high school.
English Teacher Jason PoissonEnglish and literature are the landscape to creativity. How do you teach passion and excitement in literary teaching? Teaching passion is a difficult task to say the least. Especially in the modern world were kids are so overloaded with technol-ogy and media that is consistently over the top. The trick to teaching passion to our youth now is through modeling it everyday in the classroom. We, as teachers, can no longer sit behind our desks, or stand at the front of the class and write things on the board and expect kids to be excited about the learning process. I think it is important for me to negotiate the fine line supporting our students and enabling. I (and VCHS) expect that the stu-dents will do 100% of the homework, 100% of the time. If they do not meet this bar, they are expected to stay after school and finish incomplete work. I do this to demon-strate the importance of my subject-matter. I do this to demonstrate the importance of working hard to become great. I do not give homework unnecessarily, every assign-ment is tied directly to their learning pro-cess. English as a subject is vast and often

difficult to cover all of the material. There is a lot of work that goes into becoming a literate and thoughtful thinker. What do you think makes a student want to excel in school?Inherently, I believe students want to excel. There are millions of theories that try to explain motivation, but I think there is an innate desire to please and to succeed with our students. Having a strong and genuine relationship with our students is the key to helping students to want to excel. Extend-ing that mutual friendship and respect to students makes them eager to please and dissuades them from wanting to “let you down”.
Further providing the students with op-portunities like VCHS does, to have access to technology, a safe environment, and the access to college courses (through Modesto Junior College) makes the seemingly im-possible, possible. Students at VCHS plan and prepare from the 9th grade to go to our Early College program where not only can they take college classes of their choice, they are supported by our staff in the “col-lege process”, e.g., IGETC, Library Re-sources, Student Services, Counseling Ser-vices, and all of the services that college(s) provide. What do you think we need to do differ-ently as a community to support progres-sive education?
We need to increase community program-ming. Schools are second homes to many of our students (they spend enough time at them). Teachers need to reach past the idea that they are just there to teach the curricu-lum. We are there to be intellectual guides, emotional supporters, and moral and ethi-cal coaches to our students. We need to help get our kids into the community doing things that help the community and enrich our students, whether that be volunteer-ing/ working at camp, or organizations that
provide social services, churches, the Boys and Girls Club, the Red Shield, United Cer-ebral Palsy Foundation or the Society for the Handicapped, or anything that can help a student realize their power in the world and potential toward being great. Build-ing students with a civic mind creates a culture of learning that is entirely unique for our students and encourages our youth to strive for success. If that is not progres-sive education, it is at least progress toward educating our youth.

The group was recently featured in a Span-ish Film “Antes De La Commission”, set to premiere in Modesto March 3rd at the pal-ladium “Film Screening”. Be sure to attend. Along with their long waited success and their rise to the top, the family has gone trough changes and many challenges, yet still holds on to their key values. One of the top is making their Mother/Wife proud as they stay one step ahead and keep one eye on the prize, their instruments by their side. They still continue to be the Real thing, Los Reales Del Norte! For more in-formation and extended video interview log onto www.truluvmusic.com . Jill and Nic’s Infinite Local PlaylistHey there! As always we are gearing up for another great month of live music here in Modesto. The feeling of spring is starting to get to everyone. More bands are looking for shows and us promoters are more than will-ing to make it happen. The big one that eve-ryone is talking about this month is Lucky Fest. I highly recommend going to anyone. There is really a little bit of everything, just a great over all party! But aside from that lets take a look at some bands that Nic and I think you should know about! The Early-light- In-die/ Rock- “Promises”Daniel Cun-n i n g h a m and the boys of The Earlylight have been turning heads in this area for at least the last couple of months. They are one of those types of bands that can impress any music lover. Last I saw them I found myself mesmerized by their live show. I knew I liked them already from what I could hear online but as good as that was it really does not compare to seeing them up close and personal! Check them out with out of area band Sea of Sound at the Sand Bar on March 22nd. They don’t disappoint! www.facebook.com/theearly-lightmusic/Of Us Giants- Indie-“Stone Hands”Off of local label Quote Your Pulse the band Of Us Giants is a definite must see. They have a very powerful, driven sound that pulls you in and makes it hard to do anything else but listen. Not the best choice for back ground music, it demands every bit of your attention and if you are anything like me you will not be complaining! Check them out along with The Earlylight on the Sea of Sound show at Sand Bar on March 22nd. www.facebook.com/ofusgiants/TOUR ALERT!Sea of Sound – Indie- “Lost Boys”The indie trio known at Sea of Sound is from Fresno California. They claim Cold-play, Radiohead, The Beatles, The Killers and Muse as influences but they do not sound anywhere near like just one of them.

They have the kind of solid foundation that you hear with Coldplay, the song writing genius of The Beatles and the astounding creativity of Muse and Radiohead. It makes for an amazing sound! Come see them up close and personal while you still can March 22nd at Sand Bar in Modesto!Brokenote Undertone – Acoustic/Punk/Folk – “Shoebox”This funky four piece comes to us from the Stockton area. They don’t fit in one genre, and they love the fact that they are origi-nal. They have their own sound, and it’s as unique as the band members. They go well with punk bands, as well as folk bands and reggae and ska bands. They’ve been in the scene for just over two years, and are some of the most genuine, hardworking, and talented musicians I’ve ever come across. They are releasing their first album and go-ing on tour this summer. Come see them rock the Sand Bar in Modesto on 3/21.Check them out on Facebook - www.face-book.com/BrokeNoteUnderTone
The Robin Hood Effect – Progressive Rock – “On the Run”These talented metal heads from Turlock have been rocking the valley for almost a year. They’re new, but you couldn’t tell by seeing them perform. They are making waves with their awesome original songs, and have a solid set including an amazing Dream Theatre cover. They are definitely one of the best prog rock bands to pop up in the past couple years. Come see them live on March 9th at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto.Check them out on Facebook - www.face-book.com/TheRobinHoodEffect Clockwork Hero – Rock/Alternative – “Drag”Although they are only a three piece band, Stockton’s Clockwork Hero puts forth a live show that rivals touring national acts.

Hitting The BricksBy Efren Martinez
It’s March and it won’t be long before Tri-athlon season. By now you should start to think about coming out of your winter season conditioning and cranking it up to a harder training routine. In a Triathlon, it’s swim, bike, run and that’s how you should be training. I’m talking about brick work-outs. Just doing a run on one day and a swim on the other, followed by a bike ride on the weekends will not get you ready for a Triathlon. Sure you can swim as well as run and even ride, but to be ready to do all three, one right after the other you need to be doing what are called brick workouts. Start it out easy, working your way up to the distance your going to be competing. Starting with 2 brick workouts is a good idea and will help you get back in the swing after your winter down time. After, gradu-ally start to add in a run on your brick workouts. The goal here is that you’re doing all 3 in one workout, swim, bike and run.For some of us, this doesn’t really apply if you didn’t take the winter off in regards to your training. I myself train all year long and use this very same excuse to visit the beaches of Mexico. Shortly after the first freeze here, God and budget permitting, I make my way down to the beaches of Mex-ico to train in the cooler than normal ocean waters. Swimming in the open ocean as well as the colder water will prepare you for any kind of conditions that might come at you in a Triathlon such as The Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco. Of course there is a big difference between
the 65-degree ocean temperatures in Los Cabos and the 50-degree waters in the San Francisco Bay. Just the same, ocean train-ing will help to condition your swim stroke verses training in a heated pool with abso-lutely no currents or swells to fight. While in Mexico, I made it a point to get my open water swim everyday. This consisted of swimming 150 meters out, across 450 me-ters, then back to shore another 150 me-ters, only to spring out the water and run the 450 meters back to where I started my swim. I would do this over and over for an hour making numerous continuous loops. Soon after this 2 brick workout, I headed to the gym at my resort to either run for 8-miles or spin out 30-miles on their spin bikes. Sounds tremendously painful, not really as much as the swim was. During a weeks time of my training in Los Cabos the Jellyfish there had stung me over 22 times. After awhile you get use to it and as Dori would say, “just keep swimming.” Make no mistake Modesto View friends, the Sea of Cortez is very much alive with sea life. You must prepare. One of the first things I do is hire a crew to guide me. Two kayaks, one on each side of me with a boat that circles us in case of an emergency. I also have a heavier than normal wetsuit incase a sea creature decides to nibble. It hampers my swim stroke but well worth it. Danger-ous? Sure. Since I started doing this swim back in 2009 I have had Humpback Whales come up on me as well as giant Squids that measured 18 feet long, that locals call the
Red Devils. The Squid in these waters are notorious for hunting in packs and attack like no other, latching onto your limbs they try to drown you and while doing so they use their parrot-like beaks to rip into you. Scary, sure but these are the kinds of mental challenges that will prepare any Tri-athlete for an open ocean Triathlon. In the photo here, you can see a squid that meas-ured around 18 feet come up next to me during my swim across The Sea of Cortez in 2011. This was just one of 2 that came up on me. Honestly, none of the guides or my-self knew they were there. It wasn’t till I got home a few days later and was studding my stroke in photographs that I noticed these 2 creatures from the deep that where right on me. Thankfully they both decided to “just keep swimming,” thanks Dori.
Overflowing with energy, sound, and equipment , they feel like a five or six piece band.
They are definitely one of the most under-rated bands in the Central Valley. Front man Sam York has been in active bands for almost 20 years, and has been with this current project with Josh Clarke and Ste-ve Strain for the past couple years. Check out their first album “Year of the Ram,” and see them live. It will change your life. Their next show is March 8th at the Plea for Peace Center in Stockton.Check them out on Facebook - www.face-book.com/clockworkhero Indigenous Robot – Indie/ Psyche-delic Garage Rock – “Night Day“Coming to us from Denver, Col-orado, this four piece band is one you don’t want to miss. These four talented musicians are touring around the country, and making a special stop in Modesto to rock us! They have a unique sound that has been described as rhythmically driven, dark, and smoky. I am excited to see them live. Their songs have a way of shifting you from gentle foot tapping to explosive, get-up-and-move dancing. Catch them live on

It’s no secret; my weakest event in a triath-lon is the swim. As a runner, I found that when I was swimming I had a tendency to point my toes down instead of strait out. If your toes aren’t pointing strait out, they can slow you down as if you had anchors or your feet. This type of swimmers handi-cap is called runners feet. Let’s talk about your swim kick; it’s a myth that you need to have a strong swim kick to win a Triathlon. Your kick should be more about balance than strength. Sure a strong kick will help if your in a pool swimming in a 200 meter race, but in open water Triathlon, the dis-tance can be anywhere from 1Ž4 mile swim to 2.5-miles. Using a strong kick for more then 200 meters will tire you out very fast. Focusing more on your stroke will save strength for your legs, which you will need for the ride and run of the Triathlon. Log onto The Modesto View website for some informative swim tips as well as how you can correct your running swimmers feet.

This Month I have a few things to talk about this month... the first thing is just truly awesome good friends of the Met-alView Zombie Death Stench have given us some great news. After self-releasing their current album “The Coming Bloodbath” and constantly promoting it by playing all over our region they have landed a deal with Turkey Vulture Records! The band is planning to release the Coming Bloodbath on TVR and are currently in the studio working on a new record due out in the near future! We wish our friends in ZDS lots of luck in their future with Turkey Vul-ture Records!! Next off I must mention the recent Marilyn Manson concert at Modes-to Center Plaza!! Probably the biggest national artist to come to our town since maybe Linkin park. Mr. Manson did not disappoint any of the 3000 in attendance!! It was great to see so many familiar faces
in the crowd and MM’s crew and staff were all awesome to work with. We are looking forward to our friends at J-Max produc-tions bringing more great artists like this to our beautiful city!! Last but certainly not least I must mention a really cool show happening at The Fat Cat March 30th!! Ron & Doug’s Excellent Promotions will be put-ting on a AC/DC tribute show and it prom-ises to be a rad show featuring AC/DC tribute acts RIFF-RAFF and BON-DED not to mention our friends from Manteca Eroszion who have made a real splash on the scene as of late!! W Diligent Practice By Mary Layton
I once asked my teacher who is a well known martial artist and excellent teacher from China what it was that made him so successful. Known to talk little, he said only three words: Keep doing it. Somewhat in disbelief, I kept wondering over the years if it could really be that sim-ple. I’ve come to the conclusion that doing things over and over again, is indeed what makes me improve. With each repetition I learn a little more, discover something new. My teacher tried to give us a taste of what he called ‘diligent practice’ by making us do the same routine exercises over and over.We were all surprised how much stronger we got, more fluid, more flexible, more graceful, even healthier. The hard part, of course, is to keep up a strong routine of practicing on your own. We are all in the same boat, sometimes (or at all times) we
need each other’s energy to get our own en-ergy going. Going to a class to train your mind and body toward that ability to per-severe is the ticket to success. In my experi-ence, once one practices often and regular-ly one’s thinking is going to change. Why? After repeating something over and over again, the mind suddenly becomes still and alert. It is a practice of the mind, no matter what art a person is involved with.So... Keep doing it!For more info go to: www.taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518

Go Downtown ModestoFarmers Market is back!ModestoView is so proud to be one of the presenting sponsors of the 2013 Modesto Certified Farmers market. March 30 is opening day and the market lo-cated on 16th St between H and I will be the place to be. There will be an Easter Egg hunt and much more. The Farmers Market will be open only on Saturdays until May when the Thursday market will be added. This is the place to start every weekend in Modesto. We have so much to offer, our fruits, Olive oils, our cheese, our vegetables, bakery treats, crafts, chef demonstra-tions, live local music and so much more. www.modestocfm.comFollow ModestoView on Twitter for updates www.twitter.com/modestoview
Salvation Army - “A Night of Cruisin’”This is an event you must ad your busy calendar. ModestoView loves the Salvation Army and my band Third Party donates 100% of our performance gigs to non-profits. One of the best non-profits that “does the most good” is Salvation Army. They deliver an extremely high percent of their revue directly to programs, over 85%! They help the needy in our neighborhood and if you ever wonder if people that are truly in need of a daily meal can get one, they can, through Salva-tion Army. So it is only fitting that Salvation Army has a meal benefit, many of them in fact all across town as a benefit. ModestoView’s house band will be playing at Harvest Moon this year and there are many opportunities all over the city to get involved and be a part of the this excellent event. Here are the details below. The them for this year’s “One Night Dinner” invitations is “A Night of Cruisin’ for the Army”. If you have seen the invitation, it unfolds to an old-fashioned car radio dial with stations for the homes and restau-rants. These are to promote the theme of “A Night of Cruisin’ for The Army”, appropriate for Modesto. If you do not receive an invitation in the mail this coming week, call the office at 522-3209 or email [email protected] and one will be sent to you so that you can choose the dinner you would like to attend. There are favorites from past years and several new venues as well, on March 23 and 26. The 18 local homes and restaurants donate their locations and all the food, entertainers and chefs donate their time and talents to make it a night of cruisin’ to remember. www.modestoview.com to see the full invitation.
