MODELINGYOU WILL NEED THE AIR-DRY CLAY YOU MADE LAST WEEK TO COMPLETE
THISASSIGNMENT.
STUDENT OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL USE AIR-DRY CLAY TO CREATE AN ORNAMENT OF FLOWERS AND/OR PLANTS USING AN IMPRESSION MODELING TECHNIQUE.
• Student supplies:
• Air-dry clay
• Cardboard
• Water
• Flowers and/or Plants
• Textures and found objects for
modeling tools
• Students must:
• Use all air-dry clay
• Arrange your flowers/plants in good
composition
• Use good craftsmanship
• Take multiple photos of your
completed still life
IMPRESSION: IS A MODELING TECHNIQUE THAT CREATES A GRAPHIC MARK PRESSED INTO THE SURFACE OF SOMETHING ELSE.
• Artist can use them to study textures of
other objects.
• These objects can be; plants, flowers,
rocks, and any other found objects.
TIPS FOR MODELING
• Always have your textures and tools
clean and close by
• Work on a clean nonstick surface
• I will work off cardboard, but
any nonstick surface will work.
• Air-dry clay will attract dust
and hair
TOOLS FOR MODELING OTHER THAN YOUR PLANTS
• Your hands will always be
the perfect tool.
• You can use any household item;
I will be using a wooden
skewer a popsicle stick, and cup.
• A cup of water and paint brush
will help with connecting two
pieces of clay together.
SETTING UP YOUR CLAY
• My clay has been sitting in an
airtight container for a week.
• After taking the clay out of the
container it feels stiff and can hold shape
like dough.
• Just like clay, you must wedge this clay
so that it becomes smooth.
• If the clay is too dry just add water
and wedge by rocking the clay back
and forth.
SETTING UP YOUR CLAY: DIVIDE THE CLAY INTO SEPARATE SMALLER PARTS TO WORK IN. COMPRESS BY SQUEEZING THE CLAY IN YOUR HANDS. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET UP TO 7-8 SECTIONS.
AFTER COMPRESSING THE CLAY YOU WILL FLATTEN THE CLAY INTO A SLAB. THE SLAB SHOULD NOT BE THICKER THAN YOUR PINKY.
NEXT TAKE YOUR CUP: I USED A GLASS JAR, BUT A PLASTIC CUP WILL DO JUST FINE. APPLY PRESSURE WITH THE CUP TO THE CLAY TO MAKE A PERFECT CIRCLE.
ARRANGE YOUR FLOWERS/PLANTS: THINK ABOUT LAYERS FOR GOOD COMPOSITION. PRESS YOUR LAYERS OF OBJECTS INTO THE CLAY LIKE A STAMP AND REMOVE.
LAST STEPS: TAKE A POINTED OBJECT TO PIERCE THROUGH THE CLAY CREATING A PLACE FOR THREAD OR FABRIC. THIS OBJECT CAN BE A PENCIL, TOOTHPICK, OR SKEWER.
IF YOU HAVE A RIP OR THE CLAY IS CRUMBLING APPLY SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER TO THE OPENING AND BLEND BACK AND FORTH WITH A PAINT BRUSH OR FINGER. THE OPENING WILL CLOSE.
FINAL NOTES: YOUR 7-8 ORNAMENTS SHOULD LOOK SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
TAKING PHOTOS
• Once dry: this could take more than 72 hours out in the open
• Take multiple photos of different angles
• Upload three photos of your collection of ornaments
• Front: birds eye view
• ¾ view: your work is rotated at a ¾ angle
• Close up: zoom in to your focal point or a texture you want to show off
• Rename your file: airdryclay_plantornament(a)(b)( c) depending on the angle
