Behind The Style: Soul In The City Fashion Show

Fashion is always spontaneous and that’s what I learned when I took the makeup artist, LaQuesha Bell, to her next gig after we were done with my first photo shoot for Mode Online Magazine MDEOL.COM. Bryant Hendrix, a painter and stylist, and I went in to look around and I wanted to get information on covering the show for MDEOL.COM. Then it was brought to my attention that she really needed help and wanted to know if we were interested in styling the entire show. Tina Jimison the owner of Mahogany Charm Boutique had tons of clothes and accessories but didn’t have time to focus on the fashion show aspect of the show. I agreed but was very apprehensive because we were walking into the situation blindly. However, when you’re a stylist like a doctor or most professions, you can do your job under the most unexpected circumstances.

I got the steamer and rolling racks out of my truck and Bryant and I went to work. We used some of the accessories pieces we already had from the photo shoot by Outrageous Couture. She gave us complete artistic control and the freedom to create the looks with the exception that we had to include some key pieces she wanted to show. I had an extraordinary time and it was truly a success. I loved working with the models and Bryant. Although our aesthetics are different we collaborate well for an overall hot fashion show. Most of the looks were fall with pieces like wool coats, fur vests, rompers, jeans and pants but there was a blend of spring. We did have long and short dresses that we paired with tights, fur vests and coats to give a more layered look. Although we had shorts and sequence blouses we still had colors that would go with winter looks as well. I loved using all the head pieces, hats, gloves and other accessories to make the overall look. Each model was able to have 2 looks. I was really excited to see the overall show, unfortunately I couldn’t, because I had to stay backstage. The separation from just being a stylist is being able to help with runway walking, and the overall knowledge of fashion truly helps present a production. That’s why Bryant and I love to say “you give us the clothes and we’ll serve you FIERCE DARLING.” DaNisha Greene

Fashion. What on earth is fashion? One word people use to describe what? Fashion? Well to me fashion is a lifestyle. It says who you are and were you come from. Isn't that stereotypical? But it's true. The sad, sad, truth. Today's generation is turning fashion in new directions. People are making statements. Either by wearing bright bold colors, or things that don't flow. It's funny how the styles of the "golden ages" are coming back. Well, I have to make this short, sweet, and simply. Fashion IS whatever you want it to be. Yes, I said it. You make fashion. For those who don't understand, let me explain it. What makes up trends? You. If I said, "I want to wear bright neon colored shoes", some people will judge me. Some would say, "What is this child wearing" (a.k.a.- most of society). But there are a few people out there in this world who would think, "You know what, I like how this girl is taking a risk". Risk. That's the word I was looking for. Fashion is all about taking risk. So my advice to everyone who reads this is, to take a risk (even ugly ones)...but be careful, don't get TOO confident.

Rising To The Occasion Emilio noticed her immediately as she walked into the bar area of Bellisima, one of hottest places in San Antonio to meet beautiful and successful singles. He admired the way that the black, low-back mini dress hugged her curves like the dress hadn’t seen her in a million years. He chuckled that he felt a twinge of jealousy that the fabric of her dress was getting so much attention, yet here he was left to sit at the bar in curiosity and wonderment.

He thought to himself that this was the kind of woman he needed in his life for she was a woman who commanded attention simply by entering a room. And, clearly, he

wasn’t the only man to notice as every other man in the room was plotting their move against her. Emilio felt an instant and emotional attraction that left him literally aroused by her beauty.

When she passed him to sit at the bar a few stools away, the smell of her perfume intoxicated him and was elated to realize that she was alone. So, he decided to send this woman a glass of champagne. As the bartender delivered the champagne, he glanced her way and to his surprise, she politely declined the champagne but smiled at him with a smile that exposed the deepest, most beautiful dimples he had ever seen.

Santana always knew that she had an effect on men. So, to walk into her favorite, new hot spot and notice that men were practically salivating simply at the sight of her made her more uncomfortable than the men would realize. But, if you play the game, you had better play to win.

She believes she was chosen to fight and survive this disease so that she may travel around the country and speak to women in their early twenties to late thirties. She wants this particular age group to understand that they can fight the good fight and combat this disease and survive. She wants to help make them stronger. That is why she has decided to speak

out this October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She wants the Cancer Society to allow her to be their National Spokesperson for Breast Cancer. She wants to encourage women everywhere battling this disease to FIGHT no matter what they are going through. She wants to start a new foundation called Beauty & Beyond that will assist women with paying rent, utilities, car payments, clothes, and other services they may need during their fight. She wants to provide through a salon named Beauty & Beyond, hair styles that are outside the normal realm of traditional wig pieces for patients who experience hair loss due to chemotherapy. She wants women to still be able to have the privilege of going to the salon instead of hiding behind traditional wig pieces. She wants to show women currently battling this disease how to live life comfortably with little worry

Cheryl first found out she had breast cancer in December 2006; She was devastated. She thought her life was over. Just the thought of cancer at that time was like a death sentence. She could not quite understand why she was chosen to have this deadly disease. The worst feeling in the world to have is the feeling that you’re going to die. During the time she was going through treatment her personal life was extremely challenging. She was in a physically and emotionally abusive relationship. Her financial status was in turmoil. She was a total wreck. She was being evicted from everywhere she lived. Her utilities were being disconnected and she was living in places she would never have dreamed. She would try to reach out for help from different organizations that claim they provide living assistance, however for some reason she never qualified. She lost her medical insurance and had to find ways to pay for her medication. The only people outside of her mother that was there to help her was her cousins Kim and Tiffany. She was totally shocked. We have all these companies and organizations that are donating funds for cancer research; however there are very little funds going towards a cancer patient’s everyday life. With everything else she had going on in her life at that time she was worried more about how she was going to pay her bills. She was battling cancer; finances should have been the least of her worries. You see this disease is spreading and it does not discriminate against, race, age, color, sex, or culture. Cancer doesn't care about your financial status. When it rears its head you just have to come out fighting. The craziest thing she explained to me about her having this disease is the fact that she believes it to have been a blessing. “It truly saved my life instead of taking my life” she said. This fight has made me a wiser and stronger woman. “It has made me appreciate the smallest things life has to offer” she explained. She even said that she loves her new breast more than she did the originals.

Pink Label's designer Sophia was in attendance and her label is carried in JM Couture Boutique. There were several of her models at the opening including an unconventional one, Celine Thum, currently a medical student. Celine discussed with genuine enthusiasm how Pink Label's clothes made her feel smart, sexy, and vibrant. Sophia said that her point of view is simple: nothing is to be "boxed". She does not have a particular women that wears her clothes, not limited by race, age etc. just beautiful, smart, funny, intelligent women who love life and having fun. Her inspiration for this particular line was pink and the birth of her new niece; thus many of the pieces included the use of pink.

Hype Magazine recently had the pleasure to work with her on our recent photo shoot where she once again created a one-of-a-kind painted body by Veronica. When asking her where she comes up with her ideas she told us, "Well, I do plan out ideas that I know I would want to paint on the bodies, but also upon meeting the models and environment, I tend to work better painting spontaneously from my heart. What I am feeling at the moment or kind of like sharing a thought I have, but visually. Today I was thinking if I could be any animal what would I be? I would want to be a beautiful bird or fish. These animals flow with their environment and depend on it to move, but they are always able to be free and escape to explore. I think this is definitely something that people can relate to and I wanted to portray this freedom through my paint. No better way to do that than on a human's most delicate form. For this I painted the most beautiful creatures of these species; a phoenix and a coi fish. Creatures that have a mystical beauty and also an animal's natural instinct." Watch for more work by Veronica Leonardo in upcoming issues of Hype Magazine, Mode online magazine (http://mdeol.com), and her upcoming shows.

Veronica Leonardo,

originally from northern Indiana, now resides in Indianapolis and is heading the frontier for body painting in the Midwest. Striving to compete with growing methods in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, Veronica is putting Indiana on the map with her unique body art. Veronica's body painting has been shared widely in photography and live shows through out Indianapolis area venues. When asking Veronica about her interest in body painting she shared with us, "Even though I have been doing a wide range of arts all my life, body painting/art has extremely interested me and I want to continue farther and much vigorously with it. Looking at a women's body is a beautiful form in itself, but adding the beauty of art to the skins' surface gives the viewer a story and interest to keep looking; To admire not only the detail of the art being created, but how it works itself around the human figure. Watching the art on an organic form as it moves and adapts to the body is an amazing thing to just sit back and enjoy live."

Thirty minutes before the show started the photographers were packed up in a corner like the paparazzi waiting to snap pictures of celebrities. They obviously knew something that I didn’t know. I didn’t know what to expect, as this was my first time seeing a live Body Art show. The Hair Show was marvelous, compliments of “Tease Salon”. Thumbs up to Felicia Emanuel who has a fearless sense of style. The Body Art was absolutely beautiful. Veronica Leonardo (Artist) outdid herself, excellent work. Her artistry, creativity, and presentation are at a different level. If you didn’t make it to this show, you missed a unique fashion experience.

Body Art & Fashion Runway Show

19

Body art has been around for many years. It is regularly featured in fashion shows, art shows and large events all around the country. You will see artists painstakingly creating their individual works of art that leave the imagination swooning and alive. And it now is a new trend working it’s way into the Indy culture and the people of our fine city are loving it. Indianapolis is referred to as the crossroads of America with a very large grasp in the art and fashion community. It really is no surprise that something as stylish and striking as body art would make its way to our city. Taking it by storm with all the different variations and illusions. There are so many one of a kind walking works of art now gracing the shows and events around our city and state. The beauty of body art is its versatility. A complete fashionable outfit can be accomplished with the artist’s mind, the model and the paint. Body art can create the illusion of real, actual clothing or be a movable painting that can go where ever the mind allows it to. Pair the artist and model together and dazzling things are sure to happen on that skin canvas. Body art has come such a long way that it can now be worn in public. Take a daring chance ladies of Indy! It is a free feeling that is catching on quickly. There’s a new trend coming to the Indy culture and that new trend is called body art. Enjoy it and wear it because you’ll love it.
