Getting the Most Out of Your Moda II™

Hearing InstrumentsAdjusting to your new hearing instruments will takesome time. In the beginning it is important that you donot use the hearing instruments for longer than iscomfortable. Depending on your previous experiencewith hearing devices, a few hours a day may be enoughand then you can increase wearing time gradually. Onceyou have become accustomed to your hearinginstruments, you should wear them all day every daysince infrequent use will not permit you to adapt to yourhearing instruments and enjoy their full benefits. Thequicker you get used to the everyday sounds aroundyou, the less you will notice that you are wearing hearinginstruments.

Low Battery WarningWhen you hear two long beeps, your hearinginstruments are warning you that their batteries are low.You will hear the warning approximately every 30minutes until you change the batteries or the batteriesdie. After the first warning, you may experience somereduction in sound quality. This is normal and can beremedied by inserting fresh batteries in the hearinginstruments. If you prefer, your hearing healthcareprofessional can change the pitch and loudness of thelow battery beep or turn it off entirely.

Caring for Batteries• Always discard batteries carefully.

• To prolong battery life, remember to turn your hearingdevices off when not in use.

• Remove the batteries and keep the battery door openwhile hearing devices are not in use. This will allowinternal moisture to evaporate.

Battery Warnings• Never leave hearing devices or batteries where small

children and pets can reach them.

• Never put hearing devices or batteries in your mouth. If a hearing device or battery is swallowed, call aphysician immediately.

Upto three additional manual programs can be individuallytailored by your hearing healthcare professional to meetyour particular listening needs.

Your Moda II hearing devices come equipped with apush button which has been set for switching betweenprograms or adjusting your volume. This push buttoncould also be disabled by your hearing healthcareprofessional. If you have an active push button programcontrol, each time you push the button, you will move toa new program.

Program BeepsYour hearing instruments beep to indicate which

Program 1 (e.g. Automatic Program) 1 beep

Program 2 (e.g. Group/Party Noise) 2 beeps

Program 3 (e.g. Telephone) 3 beeps

Program 4 (e.g. Music) 4 beeps

program you are in (i.e. one beep for program 1, twobeeps for program 2, etc.) If you prefer, your hearinghealthcare professional can adjust the pitch andloudness of the program beep or turn it off entirely.

Listening in Windy EnvironmentsModa II’s wind noise manager will engage automaticallybased on whether wind conditions are moderate or high. When the wind noise manager is engaged, sounds suchas speech, may become quieter because the wind noisemanager is working to reduce the loud noise producedby wind. When you are no longer in a windyenvironment, the wind noise manager will not be activeand desirable sounds, such as speech, will once againbecome louder.

Listening in Quiet and Noisy EnvironmentsYour Moda II hearing instruments have a directionalmicrophone system to meet your listening needs indifferent environments. The directional system focuseson sounds in front of you (i.e., speech) withoutamplifying the background noise around you. Your Moda II may have an advanced directional microphonesystem that adjusts automatically to changing noiselevels and tracks moving noise sources. Your hearinghealthcare professional can tell you how your directionalsystem has been customized for you and which listeningprograms have the directional microphones activated.

In addition, Moda II contains antiShock™ technology thatidentifies and minimizes sudden impulse sounds thatmany hearing instrument wearers find irritatingly loudsuch as slamming doors or clattering dishes. This

13

technology is designed to increase listening comfort inadverse listening situations without impacting soundquality or your ability to understand conversations.

Replacing the Microphone ProtectorsYour Moda II hearing instruments have a shield to protectthe microphones from dirt and debris. Debris on themicrophone protector reduces the sound quality of theinstrument. You should have the microphone protectorsreplaced by your hearing healthcare professionalapproximately every three months to ensure optimalsound quality.

Using Moda II™ with the TelephoneModa II has the ability, depending on hearing loss andvent size of hearing device to provide feedback-freephone use without program changes. When the phonerings, pick up the telephone and place it next to yourhearing instrument’s microphone. In some situationswhen using a cell phone, you may experience digitalinterference that sounds like static, buzzing or beeping. Ifyou experience interference, increase the distancebetween your hearing instrument and the phone receiver.

14

Assistive Listening Devices

Listening in Public PlacesModa II’s telecoil can also help you listen in publicplaces equipped with telecoil compatible assistivelistening devices such as a loop system. If your hearingdevices do not operate when the telecoil is on, the loopsystem may not be operating or you may be in a “dead”spot. Try positioning yourself in a different part of thelooped area or return your hearing devices to themicrophone position and sit as close to the speaker aspossible.

15

Caring for Your Moda II™ HearingInstruments• Open the battery door when not in use.

• Always remove your hearing instruments when usinghair care products. The hearing instruments canbecome clogged and cease to function properly.

• Do not wear your hearing devices in the bath orshower or immerse them in water.

• If your hearing instruments do become wet, do notattempt to dry them in an oven or microwave. Do notadjust any controls. Open the battery doorsimmediately, and allow your hearing instruments todry naturally for 24 hours.

• Protect your hearing devices from excessive heat (hairdryer, vehicle glove box or dashboard).

• Regular use of a dehumidifier, such as a Dri-Aid kit,can help prevent corrosion. See your hearinghealthcare professional for more information.

• Do not drop your hearing devices or knock themagainst hard surfaces.

16

Cleaning Your Moda II™ HearingInstrumentsEar wax is natural and common. Ensuring your hearingdevices, earmolds and domes are free of ear wax is animportant step in your daily cleaning and maintenanceroutine.

• Never use alcohol to clean your hearing devices, earmolds or domes.

• Do not use sharp tools to dislodge ear wax. Stickinghousehold items into your hearing devices orearmolds can seriously damage them.

• Have the slim tubes and domes replaced by yourhearing healthcare professional approximately everythree to six months or when they become stiff orbrittle.

• Clean the domes daily with a damp cloth.

• Clean the slim tubes periodically, with the cleaningpin provided, when you begin to notice debris in andaround the tubes.

Cleaning the Earmolds and Domes

Moda II with Slim Tubes andDomes

Ensure your slim tubes and domesare free of ear wax and moisture.

17

Cleaning the Slim Tubes and Domes:

1. Hold the slim tube in one hand and the hearinginstrument in the other hand.

2. Twist the top of the slim tube and detach it from thehearing instrument.

3. Use a damp cloth to clean the outside of the slimtube and the dome.

4. Using the black cleaning pinprovided in the kit, gently insert thecleaning pin where the slim tubeattaches to the hearing instrumentand push the pin all the waythrough the tube and out throughthe dome.

Note: The slim tubes and domes should never be rinsedor submerged in water as water drops may becomelodged in the tube, block sound or damage theelectrical components of the hearing instrument.

5. Once the slim tube has been cleaned, reattach it bygently pressing the hearing instrument onto the slimtube.

Moda II with Earhooks and Earmolds

If your Moda II hearing devices have earhooks (see“Using the Moda II Guide”), your hearing healthcareprofessional fit you with customized earmolds (see“Using the Moda II Guide”). Earmolds send amplified

sound from the hearing devicesinto the ears. They must fit intoyour ears snugly andcomfortably. If amplified soundleaks out of your ear, you mayhear whistling.

Always ensure earmolds areclean and free of ear wax and moisture. Do not usealcohol to clean your earmolds. If the earmolds becomeplugged, clear the opening with a wax loop or pipecleaner. If your physician prescribes eardrops, clean anymoisture that may get into the earmolds or tubing toprevent plugging.

Cleaning the Earmolds

If the earmolds attach to an earhook and they requirefurther cleaning, disconnect the plastic tube from thehook of the hearing devices. Wash only the earmolds inwarm water with a mild soap. Rinse them with coolwater and allow them to dry overnight. Make sure theearmold tubes are dry before reconnecting them to eachhook on your hearing devices.

Warnings• Hearing devices should only be used as directed by

your physician or hearing healthcare professional.

• Hearing devices will not restore normal hearing andwill not prevent or improve a hearing impairmentresulting from organic conditions.

• Do not use your hearing devices in explosion hazardareas.

• Allergic reactions to hearing devices are unlikely. However, if you experience itching, redness, soreness, inflammation or a burning sensation in or aroundyour ears, inform your hearing healthcareprofessional and contact your physician.

• In the unlikely case that any parts remain in the earcanal after the removal of the hearing instrument, contact a physician immediately.

• Remove your hearing devices for CT and MRI scans orfor other electromagnetic procedures.

• Special care should be exercised in wearing hearingdevices when maximum sound pressure levels exceed132 decibels. There may be a risk of impairing yourremaining hearing. Speak with your hearinghealthcare professional to ensure the maximumoutput of your hearing devices is suitable for yourparticular hearing loss.

• Warning to hearing healthcare professional: Domes

20

should never be fitted on patients with perforatedeardrums, exposed middle ear cavities, or surgicallyaltered ear canals. In the case of such a condition, werecommend to use a customized ear mold.

Precautions• The use of hearing devices is only part of hearing

rehabilitation; auditory training and lip readinginstruction may be required as well.

• In most cases, infrequent use of hearing devices doesnot provide full benefit. Once you have becomeaccustomed to your hearing devices, wear yourhearing devices everyday all day.

• Your hearing devices use the most moderncomponents to provide the best possible soundquality in every listening situation. However, communication devices such as digital cell phonescan create interference (a buzzing sound) in hearingdevices. If you experience interference from a cellphone being used close by, you can minimize thisinterference in a number of ways. Switch your hearingdevices to another program, turn your head in adifferent direction or locate the cell phone and moveaway from it.

Warning to Hearing InstrumentDispensers A hearing instrument dispenser should advise aprospective hearing instrument user to consult promptlywith a licensed physician (preferably an ear specialist)before dispensing a hearing instrument if the hearinginstrument dispenser determines through inquiry, actualobservation, or review of any other available informationconcerning the prospective user, that the prospectiveuser has any of the following conditions: (i) Visiblecongenital or traumatic deformity of the ear. (ii) History ofactive drainage from the ear within the previous 90 days.(iii) History of sudden or rapidly progressive hearing losswithin the previous 90 days. (iv) Acute or chronicdizziness. (v) Unilateral hearing loss of sudden or recentonset within the previous 90 days. (vi) Audiometric air-bone gap equal to or greater than 15 decibels at 500hertz (Hz), 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz. (vii) Visible evidenceof significant cerumen accumulation or a foreign body inthe ear canal. (viii) Pain or discomfort in the ear. Specialcare should be exercised in selecting and fitting a hearinginstrument whose maximum sound pressure levelexceeds 132 decibels because there may be risk ofimpairing the remaining hearing of the hearinginstrument user. [This provision is required only for thosehearing instruments with a maximum sound pressurecapability greater than 132 decibels (dB).]

25

Important Notice for Prospective HearingInstrument Users Good health practice requires that a person with ahearing loss have a medical evaluation by a licensedphysician (preferably a physician who specializes indiseases of the ear) before purchasing a hearinginstrument.

Licensed physicians who specialize in diseases of the earare often referred to as otolaryngologists, otologists orotorhinolaryngologists. The purpose of medicalevaluation is to assure that all medically treatableconditions that may affect hearing are identified andtreated before the hearing instrument is purchased.Following the medical evaluation, the physician will giveyou a written statement that states that your hearingloss has been medically evaluated and that you may beconsidered a candidate for a hearing instrument. Thephysician will refer you to an audiologist or a hearinginstrument dispenser, as appropriate, for a hearinginstrument evaluation. The audiologist or hearinginstrument dispenser will conduct a hearing instrumentevaluation to assess your ability to hear with andwithout a hearing instrument. The hearing instrumentevaluation will enable the audiologist or dispenser toselect and fit a hearing instrument to your individualneeds. If you have reservations about your ability toadapt to amplification, you should inquire about the

26

availability of a trial-rental or purchase-option program. Many hearing instrument dispensers now offer programsthat permit you to wear a hearing instrument for aperiod of time for a nominal fee after which you maydecide if you want to purchase the hearing instrument.Federal law restricts the sale of hearing instruments tothose individuals who have obtained a medicalevaluation from a licensed physician. Federal lawpermits a fully informed adult to sign a waiver statementdeclining the medical evaluation for religious or personalbeliefs that preclude consultation with a physician. Theexercise of such a waiver is not in your best healthinterest and its use is strongly discouraged.

Children With Hearing Loss In addition to seeing a physician for a medicalevaluation, a child with a hearing loss should be directedto an audiologist for evaluation and rehabilitation sincehearing loss may cause problems in languagedevelopment and the educational and social growth of achild. An audiologist is qualified by training andexperience to assist in the evaluation and rehabilitationof a child with a hearing loss.
