Davidson Co., North Carolina BurialsMiddleton Methodist Church

Compiledby Ronald M. Moore

These burials are copied from some papers of Dr.William Mannwho did considerable research on the NorthCarolina Mocks quite a number of years ago. I find it in-teresting that most early Mocks usually belonged to theLutheran or Reformed Church and a few the MoraviarLMennonite, Dunkard and other churches, but this is a largegroup of Mocks in Midway, Davidson Co. who are buriedin a Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery.

From Steve Lapp:Adam Mock, son of facob, became very active in the

Methodist Church at Midway. In the Feb. 1993 issue ofMFH, pg 1-4 Barbara Dittig quoted portions of Rrcords ofthe Moraaians in N.C. Both Jacob and his son Adam arementioned, as well as the Methodists. I believe Adam mayeven have been a minister of that church. Apparently someof Jacob's family became Moravians and some becameMethodists. This created some discord in the community, which was controlled to a la{ge extent by the Moravians. On March 76,1834 fuliana Kappus Mack was buried bythe Moravians in the Lutheran graveyard, the LutheranChurch there was no longer active. Two years later herhusband, Jacob was buried in the Moravian cemetery atFriedberg. Ron Moore P,O, Box 386, Friant, [email protected]. Steoe Lapp 290 C.R. 4il, Hondo, TX 78867steoelapp@ juno.cotn

AbrahamMack was a son of Jacob MackJr. and wife by the nameof Catharina. This Abraham was b. 14 Aug 1798 andbapt. 23 Sep 1798 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran ChurctUSchoenersville, l€high Co PA (very near Allentown). His siblings that were baptized in the same church areElisabeth b. 18 Sep 1795,Mana b. 12 Dec 1796,Hewyb.23 Dec 180Q Maria Margaretha b. 13 Aug 1802 andFriedrich b. 5 Oct 1804. A recent memo from Kathy Mock -William Henry Mock seems to have disappeared

from the time the Mocks moved fromTennessee until theyarrived in Kansas. Mary Ann (Bracey) Mock arrived inHays KS with her two youngest sons, fames Robert andPhillip. She is buried in the Norman Cemetery near Hays,KS. To my knowledge, none of us who have worked thisline for 25135 years have ever found out what happenedto William Henry Mock Several of the sons eventuallywent to Anthony, KS and there is a William Henry Mockin the records inAnthony, but it is NOT our W.H. Mock. Ihave checked these records thoroughly.

I will share anything that has been researched on thisWilliam Henry Mock line, but there are many unansweredquestions regarding Wm. H. Mock, b. in N.C.Kathy Mock in Colorado

They were married 15 Feb 1855 in Hancock Co' IL'When examining chart (23A) I learned that the

place for John Willianrls birth is given as Ross Co', Ohio''

Last sununer a Robert Thompson was through [ola,

Ks.,where we live, on a genealogy triP researching Willis

families. We agreed to exchange information when he re-

turned home. ivh"n we did this we learned that the fohnWilliam Willis he was searching was the son of Levin Willis

of Ross County Ohio. The |ohn William Willis who mar-

ried Martha Eilen Mauk in Hancock County, Ill' in 1855 is

not thisfohn William Willis sl o Levin. Upon further check-

ing Mr.Thompson learned that Levin's son john William

Uie4 aiea ut disbori"dinRossCo.,Ohio. Oddly enough

Robert Thompson did have Willis families in and around

Iola- We don'iyet know if there is a connecting link or iustcoincidence.

fohn William Willis died before death certificates

were issued in Kansas. I've returned to researching family

after 25 years lay off. I did make notes years ago regarding

]ohn William Wiilis when talking with family melbgrsnow deceased. They all said he was born in Kentucky, his

death notice in the paper states this as well' Unfortunately

his father died young and his mother re-maried name un-

known to anybne. 5o I still don t know fohn William's

father's t am" t ot the county in Kentucky' I think ['ve re-

cently discovered hismother'sname (this is aworkinpro-cess and haven't the Proof Yet.)

The only other clue a family member gave,-was

that Maysville, kentucky was named after |ohn William

Willis's *othut As I couidn't go backwards due to lack of

information I tried to learn about Maysville' So far no luck'

This may just be a famity tradition.I'rnL'known almosf nothing about the Mauks' Other

Mauks were in our area as well and I'm still tracking them

down. One of John Witlis's daughters married John A'

fenkins, a first cousin. I see at least 3 Mauk's marrying

ienkins in Hancock Co. I11., that is another puzzle to un-

ravel. One other item: ['ve had a certified copy of ]ohn Wil-

liam and Martha Ellen's marriage certificate' It gives

Martha ANN Mauk. I feel this is iust one of those errors

that happen sometimes. All other information including

her death notice, gives her middle name as Ellen'

In the early ieventies I took a genealogy class at our

community coilLge and was taught to make notes' Thank

goodness.'T'hit *i* ,tp got me really sorting and sifting

ild information and I discovered a note I made when phon;

noted '1,12 sister, married Wanness(sounds like), 1/2brother in Mo. first name Boyd, Full sister named PriscillaSanford.

Thanks to the Illinois Marriages online and an easilysearched site at McDonough Co Ill GenWeb I believe I'velocated our John William Willis's mother in McDonoughCounty lllinois which borders Hancock. This is still a workin process and must be proven.

Illinois Marriages show a Priscilla Willis marrying ajoseph Sanford, leading me to McDonough County. Therewere in McDonough Co. Census for 1&t0 two Willis headsof Household. One William the other Nancy. Back to llli-nois Marriages-sure enough in 1841 a Mrs. Nancy Willismarries a Robert Boyd, apparently a widow again by 1850.

The 1850 census lists everyone as Boyd---one feels the Cen-sus taker may have been tippling at the end of the day andthere will be no way to prove this is John W. Willis notBoyd but coupled with a 1/2 brother first name Boyd Ifeel this is our Willis.

Again back to Illinois Marriages-in 1831 Mrs. NanryBoyd marries a |ohn Gibson. 1850 Census Mc DonoughCo., give this household listing also an Allen Boyd andAquilla Boyd and I've had the 1870 Hancock Co. censusfor years, but never would have put it all together were itnot for the ease of searching from my computer the Illi-nois Marriages. The 1870 Census for ]ohn William Willisand Martha Ellen Mauk gives Allen Boyd living with them.Have lost him after thatbut will continue looking for him.

This seems to me to be too many Boyd/Willis not tobe connected to the 1/2 brothef, first name Boyd as mynote said, but now believe it is LAST NAME BOYD.. Mat & Nancy J. Willis 9O3 N. Kentucky loln, [email protected]>

Mauks of Elliott Co., KYBy Lee AnnMaukBlakemorc

Johann Peter >Frederick >Samuel >Joseph Sr >Peter

Commodore >D. Santford >Charles SantfordMy grandfatheq, D. Santford Mauk" was b. 1 Oct

1878 in Open Fork, Elliott Co, KY a son of Peter Commo-dore and Linny C. lWhiftl Mauk. I have this documentedin my grandfather's handwriting on the back of a smallphoto of the home where he was born- He died in El

Monte, CA 1975. D. Santford married KatherineJosephine Pekel b. 1889 Wisconsin and d. 1%0 ElMonte,cA.

I am looking for inlormation on my great grandfa-the4 Peter Commodore, the son of |oseph Sr., Peter Com-modores brothers and their families. I recall from info toldto me from my grandfather D. Santford, that his motherLinny Whitt Mauk died young. My grandfather was

apprcx 10 years of age(late 188Os) or so,...the story goes

like this...he stayed with his father after she died and trav-eled around the countryside as a stone mason, learningthe hade. D. Santford had brothers, Comrtodore, Wilmoreand Frank. Frank went to live with other relatives "thatwere morle affluent, owned a store." She tells me that Com-

modore and Wilmore were older and went on their own.Commodore had a sorl Ernest Peter Mauk Sr., residing inTexas and a sory Ernest Peter ]r' last known residing in W.

Hollywood, CA. He never married and no known chil-dren. Wilmore married and had children, no other in{o.Frank married Lina

- and lived in W. Hollywood, CA.

No children. It is know that he is buried in a cemetary inWest Hollywood.

D. Santford always spoke of his sisteq, Belle. I have 2

obituaries of a Minnie Mauk Bear. The obituaries state

that Minnie Mauk Bear was born in Carter Co.,[KYl 19 May1875, adau. of Beniamin and Emma Black Rice. Her firsthusband was the late C.D. Mauk. My mother believes

that Belle, the sister D. Santford spoke of was Minnie (Belle)

MaukBear. CD. lCommodore Deweyl and Minnie MaukBear had 2 sons, Watt P. Mauk of Houstory TX and R-

Dewey Mauk of New Baltimore, OH - So perhaps D.Santford's sister was really a sister-in-law!?

I am trying to learn of the now day families and rela-

tives of Peter Commodores brothers, Samuel b.184? Wil-liam b.18d,5, Mary Frances b.18t18, Sarah Catherine b. 1852,

Joseph dink fr. b. 1854, Mary Jane b. 1854, John b.1852Aminda b. 1859, teffeson David b.1ffi6, Laura Bell b.1867, Sampson S. b.1859.

Also anyone who may know of a Minnie Belle MaukBear. who traveled to California in the 1950's or 1940's to

I am a descendant of Mary Mock, d/o Devault andPheobe (Clinard Mock, who maried Adam Coppess. At the moment I am particularly interested in (1) learningif there is any information aboutJohannes Mock's originsin Europe and (2) learning if there is any connection be-

tween Adam'Coppess" and julianna "Kappus." Accord-ing to the genealogy, Adam Coppess was b. 177L in RowanCo., NC s/o Bolserand Anna Coppess. I would appreci-ate any reference or other information you could offer onthese questions. Thank you for such good work on theMock site.. Michael Coppess U7 N. Ferrells'bible. Scribbled in says " Peter of Wertenburg, G*-many" and nothing more. I have leamed many peopleclaimed to have been descendants of three brothers one ofwhom was a Peter from Wertenburg Germany. I have a

EromRonMoorc to Candi-Nice to hear from you and that you have now em-

barked on computer genealogy. I have taken the liberty tosend a copy of your message to our free Mock list and dis-cussion group, MOCK-GEN-L. I know there are other cous-

ins from your line who are researching the same peopleand who will be anxious to connect with you.

The names you mention are all familiar to us andthere have been prior messages to this list which you canfind in the MockArchives which canbe accessed from the

Mock Family Historian Home Page. I would suggest youvisit that site and search for the various names you havementioned.

That was very interesting about your grandmother'sBible. I would like to have more details on this. Do youknow about when that entry was made about Peter Mock?I would also like to hear who the three brothers you have?

Some have said this was Peteq, fohn and Alexander butsome have questioned this.

We invite you to join our free list and discussiongroup if you are not already a member.. Ron Moore Listowner and Moderator MOCK-GEN-Lrmnor&cybergate.com
