1 MobiLED Compact Hardware

1.1 TechnologyMobiLED Compact signs are daylight readable LED destination signs. In comparison to the standard MobiLED series, MobiLED Compact signs offer same resolutions in a smaller chassis. The signs are using LED-modules (Light Emitting Diode) to build up a full-matrix display which can be used to display text or graphics.

1.2 Versions

Slave SignsMobiLED Compact Slave signs are handled like standard MobiLED destination signs. They are fully com-patible to the Mobitec RS485 interface specification and are connected into Mobitec information systems controlled by a Mobitec Control Unit. The Slave signs are used in the same environment as standard MobiLED destination signs. Functionality and Troubleshooting descriptions in this manual do not handle the slave signs. Please refer to the Mo-biLED customer manuals for more details on these topics.

Master SignsMaster signs have an integrated control unit in the backside of the chassis and are used as stand alone units. Only power connection is necessary for operation.

The integrated control unit is of the MobiMASTER ICU600 family and compatible with the Basic operation of the MobiMASTER ICU600 standard control units. This manual is describing the additional function-ality offered by the control unit of the Compact Master sign. For more details please refer to the ICU600 users manual.

1.3 MechanicalInstallation

DangerofInjurybyfallingparts! Since these devices are partially mounted above the passenger or the drivers area, it is very important to have a proper installation. When installing/uninstalling the signs please make sure to:

Always use the original screws, washers and mounting adapters when replacing a unitFor new installations, follow the mounting instructions below and the specifications from the bus manufacturerEnsure yourself that the chassis part of the vehicle that the sign should be mounted to, is strong enough for such a purposeEnsure the screws are carefully tightened when installing

••

The light sensor is placed on the left side of the display field behind a tinted glass area (details see technical drawing). Mounting must always ensure that the sensor is exposed directly to the ambient light and is not covered by any chassis parts, maskings etc. Otherwise legibility of the sign cannot be guaranteed in bright ambient conditions.

For Installation, remove the two black plastic end parts of the sign with a hexagon key 3mm.The sign can now by mounted with M6 screws, two on each side. The sign is delivered with roof mount-ing brackets by standard. For wall- or surface mounting, please contact Mobitec.

The Graphic shows the master version. The slave version has a different connector at the cable outlet including RS485 interface, for details please refer to the chapter Electrical Connections.

2 MobiLED Compact Software

2.1 Overview

Slave SignsThe sign software is stored in the drive card which is mounted next to the display field. The drive card is loaded with two different parts of software, the fonts and the sign firmware. The fonts and the firmware are uploaded from a computer into an on-board flash memory circuit. It is possible to re-program both versions by using a computer and a special interface. This needs to be performed by Mobitec authorized personnel. All functionality related to the layout (e.g. scrolling) must be supported by the sign firmware. Functional-ity related to route handling, e.g. when to trigger information change on the sign, has to be provided from the used control unit. Please contact Mobitec if you need more details.

Master SignsAll sign software is stored on the controller board of the integrated control unit and can be updated via the USB port. The software is divided into two major parts. The customer data includes all files that are customer specific. Customer data is generated with the Mo-bitec editor MIE. The second part of the software is the operational software or firmware of the integrated control unit.

2.2 OperatingMasterSigns

GeneralOperationThere are two different ways of operating the unit. In free text mode all destination text and line numbers can be entered directly at the unit via the alphanu-merical keypad. There are memory slots for up to 50 programs. In file mode, all customer data is edited in the Mobitec editor MIE and loaded via USB flash memory. It is still possible to key in free text as ad-hoc messages, the free text programs won’t be stored over a customer data update, however.

GeneratingdatafilesThe available menus and functions of an ICU600 are controlled via the MIE software. The difference between a standard ICU600 control unit and the integrated control unit of the Compact Master sign is the availability of the free text mode. In case free text mode should be available in parallel to the loaded file, special menu and settings files have to be selected before generating the out-file in MIE. In case the free text mode should not be available, an out-file for a standard ICU600 can be generated.

MIE2 does not include the options to generate out-files for the Compact sign in the standard version. If needed a patch is available to update MIE2 installations.

In MIE2 the menu and settings file can be selected in the last step of the out-file generation:

MobiLED Compact menu and settings files must be selected when file and free text mode should be used. Menu File: RS_Db_menus_ICU600_compact.txt Settings File: RS_Db_data_items_compact.txt

Standard menu and settings files for ICU600 units should be selected in case the free text mode should be switched off. Menu File: RS_Db_menus_ICU600.txt Settings File: RS_Db_data_items.txt

In MIE 3 there is a separate checkbox in the last window of the out-file wizard. Check this before doing the out-file to enable the free text menu. If unchecked free texts will be disabled.

As long as the free text menus are not disabled in the out-file as described above, there is no hard switch between the free text and the file mode. It is always possible to load a file generated in MIE, it will then replace previously loaded files and also stored free text programs. For a general user interface description and more details on the file mode, please refer to the ICU600 customer manual.

This function is included in MIE3 version 3..8 and later.

This is the standard screen coming up after the unit has been started. It always comes up with the last selected program or an empty screen in case there was no valid selections before the unit has been switched off.Press Dest (F) to change the program

In the free text menu, text and numbers can be ed-ited via the alphanumerical keyboard. This works similar to text editing in many mobile phones. The sign will autoformat all edited text by selecting a matching font and switching to scrolling mode for too long texts.

To select a program from a loaded out file, scroll to the entry using the arrow keys and press enter. To select a free text, press Free text (F2)

To select a stored free text, scroll to the entry us-ing the arrow keys and press enter. To edit a stored free text, scroll to the entry using the arrow keys and press Edit (F).To edit a new free text, scroll to an empty entry us-ing the arrow keys and press Edit (F).

Entering free text

Pressing an alphanumerical key multiple times scrolls through a list of letters associated to this key. Associated letters are printed below the digit on each key. The list first contains lower case letters, than upper case letters. It also contains language specific special characters.Example:To get a ‘N’, the key for the digit ‘6’ has to be pressed six times during it scrolls through: m-n-o-ö-M-N.When reaching the end of the list it restarts with the first character. When doing a break for more than 1s the actual character will be chosen and the cursor moves one digit ahead.Following function keys can be used during the input:

F - Num/Alfa: Switch input mode between numeric (digits) and alphanumeric (letters). The actually selected mode is shown in the upper right corner of the display, in above example it is numeric.F2 - 2nd row Switch between first row and second row text. If the second row is left empty during editing, the first row will be displayed full height.F3 - Line no: Activate / Deactivate a separate line number left of the text. The actually selected mode is shown in the lower right corner of the display, in above example it is deactivated. The line number is always shown full height and can consist of digits and letters.F4 - Delete Delete a single character at the end of the actual text.

The sign can only scroll one text row at a time. If texts for both rows exceed the sign dimensions in the smallest font, the text of the second line will be cut.

2.3 Updating via USBSoftware is being updated by using a prepared USB flash memory and the USB port of the integrated control unit.

PreparingaUSBmemory:All Mobitec Update files have a specific file extension. There might be two different file types:

Customer data files (extension .out): Can include customer programming (destination or route data) and system configuration.Firmware files (extension .MCP): Including firmware for the sign.

For details on the update process, please refer to the ICU600 customer manual. Only difference is the name of the firmware file.

F5 - Delete all Deletes the complete row. Enter Finish editing and store edited textCancel: Stop editing and discard all changes

2.4 LEDbrightnessregulationMobiLED Compact signs are automatically regulating the LED brightness depending on the ambient light conditions. This is necessary in order to keep readability in bright sunlight but also to not glare in dark-ness.MobiLED Compact signs regulate the brightness in 50 steps to achieve optimal visibility in all conditions.

2.5 Display stand-by modeWhen not operated the integrated control unit switches into stand-by mode after 20s. In this mode the LCD backlight is switched off. Pressing any key will bring the unit back to normal operation. This input will not cause any further action of the unit than the wake-up.
