Taming Big DataControlling the Explosion
10
- Retool/Reassess/Scale up existing Security, Governance and Information Lifecycle Management Controls
- We will need to embrace/implement new:- Platforms (Hadoop, NoSQL, in-memory and
graph databases)- Domains (Unstructured data from events,
sensors, geospatial, clickstreams, and other human interaction sources)
- Scales(Volume, Velocity, and Variety of the Data)- Stakes (Greater reliance on automation vs.
human knowledge generation)
- Mandates (Compliance, Privacy, and PII concerns)
Big Data Success begins with a Solid Foundations…We need to Get this Right from the Start28 Feb13 -- 0900

• Server and database consolidation rules don’t apply- No virtualization - Specialized Hardware & Large amounts of Rackspace
• HyperScale Big Data solutions:- Use new technologies such as Hadoop ecosystems & NoSQL nodes
- Capture and store data once
- Automate migration of data to less expensive tiered storage
- Use Node/datacenter-level self-healing/replicating technologies
- Are designed for explosive growth & near real-time/global demand
- Leverage wide-area data slicing technologies vs RAID

Big Data/Cloud Storage Technologies:Data Slicing

Data Slicing = Possible Cloud Storage Information Assurance Solution

• Slicing technologies place unreadable portions of the data in many locations (DECC, Service-owned, Commercial Cloud or hybrid)
– Only the storage controller knows how many slices and where they are stored– Information Assurance is baked in and requires no further overhead
• Only a subset of the slices are needed to recreate the original data– For example: Data sliced into 4 pieces only requires 3 pieces for reconstitution– This eliminates the need for RAID drives (reducing the cost of storage)

Big Data and ISR Video
28 Feb13 -- 0900
Need: • Hyper scale solution to ingest, transport, store and exploit ISR data
• Need low cost solution that provides universal access much like Twitter, Facebook or xBox live
• Solution must be accessible by analysts and mobile forces worldwide
Proposed Solution: Big Data analytics tied to an Exabyte scalable storage array
