Mobile

We will design web applications to be mobile friendly and will provide native mobile applications for phones and tablets for a subset of key services.

Responsive design will be used to ensure that student-facing web applications size to fit on different mobile devices. Native mobile applications will be written for key services where the user experience is paramount or key functionality is not available in a web application.

Mobile applications will access enterprise data through secured REST web services. These services will be secured with an API key that can be manually revoked to disable a

particular application. Official BYU–Idaho native applications will undergo a code review before being published in

order to ensure that credentials are being handled correctly and that other best practices are followed.

Responsive Design

If a website needs to be functional on all devices then we will use Responsive Design.

Working jointly with University Communications we have created a Master page Template that utilizes Responsive Design. This template has been used in a number of Web Sites. Developers are also making sites “touch” enabled.

Platform

With our limited resources we are seriously investigating using BYU’s mobile platform. They have a platform for Android and IOS.

We plan to do limited development on Windows Phone.

We have the source for both the IOS and Android versions. We are more ahead on the IOS version than we are on Android.

Class Help

We have tried working with CIT (Lee Barney) to involve a class. This failed for the following reasons:1) API documentation was not good.2) We didn’t have good examples.3) Lack of involvement. A developer should probably attend

the class to answer questions.

As we finalize the platform we would welcome class participation in writing apps.
