At the end of last year I wrote an article on the massive mobile market that is India and looked at theunprecedented rise of its telecoms industry. India's mobile story is nothing short of a modern mobilemiracle, with the country experiencing some of the fastest mobile growth in the world as subscriber ratescontinue to flourish, increasing by 6% as of January 2014, according to the latest report issued bywearesocial.net

Asia's fastest growing smartphone market has showed no signs of slowing down and with the outlook forthe telecoms sector looking more optimistic than ever before in the wake of the announcement of India'sbudget for 2015-16, mobile data traffic is set to propel local operators into the stratosphere!

Here we will take a look at the mobile industry in India, its inhabitants obsession with all things mobile(particularly the rise in mobile data consumption), how the future looks for telcos and how they canleverage this surge in data usage to supply a nation thats hunger has become insatiable...

India and it's obsession with mobile data

For one to truly understand just how deep the obsession with mobile data goes it is important to look at thefacts. Luckily there isn't a shortage of stats available to show you just that! According to a recent studyconducted by Nokia network, the following facts were brought to light:

India has seen a 74% increase y-o-y in mobile data traffic generated by both 2G and 3G mobilebroadband services in 2014

3G traffic in India increased by 114%. 3G constituted 52% of total traffic consumed in 2014

An average Indian subscriber consumes 680 MB/ month of 3G data, which is a 29% increase from2013

These facts are illustrated in the graph belowand these points definitely reflects India's lovefor mobile and the use thereof and emphasizeswhat is being done behind the scenes tofacilitate this demand.

Telcos recording record growth

Fast data traffic growth is a sign of positivegrowth in the Indian telecom industry andoperators are recording record growthnumbers! One such telco, Videcon Telecom, registered 124% growth in mobile dataconsumption in 2014.

Arvind Bali, Director & CEO, Videocon Telecom had this to say, “We have closely watching the industrytrends specifically on mobile data. We have grown our data business at 126% during year 2014 which isalmost double the pace of the industry growth at 72%, and is more than the 3G data consumption growthduring the same period.”

Furthermore he stated, “This growth is an outcome of 26% increase in average usage per customer andover 14% improvement in data penetration on our Revenue earning base with data enabled handsets.”

These figures paint a very optimistic picture for telcos servicing the industry and as this trend continues toshape the mobile landscape in India, so shall the operators continue to expand their existing networks.
