Implementation Guidelines for compression technologies in SAP environments
1 Start with Index
Compression
Improves R/3
performance the most
as all database access
in R/3 environments is
index-based, especially
index range scans
Up to 20% disc space
reduction for complete
database
2 Implement OLTP Table
Compression
No real query
performance benefit in
R/3 environments
Provides very good
disc space savings
3 Implement SecureFiles
Compression
Very important for SAP
applications like CRM
or XI/PI that store
large (uncompressed)
amounts of data
4 RMAN Backup
Compression
Additional disk space
savings (even if
database tables and
indexes are already
compressed)

SAP on Oracle 11g
Oracle Feature Availability – Space
Dictionary-Only Add Column
Very common operation within SAP BW
application and SAP upgrades
Factor 10–20 performance improvement for
SAP BW during add column processes
Saves large amount of disk space
Deferred Segment Creation
Empty database objects will not consume any
disk space
Very important for SAP environments:
60–70% of all tables, indexes, LOBs and
partitions in an SAP installation are empty!
Saves disk space
Improves query response times on space objects
in Oracle Data Dictionary
Makes database install part for SAP a lot faster
(creation of empty tables, indexes, LOBs and
partitions are dramatically faster)

SAP environments due to high flexibility, ease of
use and NFS
Very common in Linux environments. Ideal for
Linux/RAC
SAP and Oracle use NAS NFS for most
development and operational systems
Up to 20% CPU savings on database server
due to integrated NFS client in Oracle kernel
Superior to any bonding solution – faster and
easier
Better throughput than most SAN solutions
Highly available. Multiple network cards can be
used between database server and NAS

Up to 20% faster queries with COUNT [DISTINCT]
Fast MIN/MAX computation
Up to 20% faster queries with MIN/MAX operations
Very important for CBO statistics computation
In-Memory Parallel Execution
Physical disk IO will be avoided or dramatically
reduced as parallel operations can be satisfied
in main memory
With RAC, Oracle maps fragments of objects
into each buffer cache of the active instances
Improves SAP BW performance and parallel
index creation/rebuild operations

Online Patching
Most one-off patches and PSUs can be installed
while SAP and the database are up and running
Reduces need for stand-by and failover
solutions for patch maintenance
Every failover solution from any vendor has to roll
back active database transactions during switch
over
Online patching is faster than any failover solution
No additional administration overhead
No failover and failback needed
No impact on active SAP transactions in
contrast to failover solutions

New Patch Concept
© 2013 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 31
New Patch Concept
Oracle Patch Set Update (PSU)
New Strategy
Starting with 10.2.0.4, Oracle provides so-called
Patch Set Updates (PSUs)
New PSU released every 3 months
For Linux/Unix only, Windows strategy not affected
A Patch Set Update…
…is a collection of important fixes encountered by
customers
…contains Critical Patch Updates (CPUs), the
Oracle CPU concept will vanish
…must be applied on top of the installed patch set
© 2013 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 32
New Patch Concept
SAP Bundle Patch (SBP)
New Strategy
SAP now delivers Oracle database patches in
form of so-called SAP Bundle Patches (SBPs)
Initial Oracle versions: 10.2.0.4.4 and 11.2.0.1.1
For Linux/Unix only, Windows strategy not affected
An SAP Bundle Patch…
…includes the current Oracle Patch Set Update
…contains non-PSU, single and merge fixes
required for SAP
…contains the current SAP-specific Optimizer
Merge Patch
Variants
Three kinds of SBPs:
SAP Bundle Patch for Unix
SAP Bundle Patch for Exadata
SAP Bundle Patch for Grid Infrastructure (GI)
Installation
SBPs are cumulative (i.e. they include all patches
from previous SBPs)
MOPatch 2.1.1 or higher required
(see SAP Note 1027012)
Post-processing script (catsbp.sql) included
© 2013 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 33
New Patch Concept
SAP Bundle Patch (SBP)
Advantages
SAP Bundle Patches have several advantages
over the previous patch concepts:
Integration of PSUs with additional, SAP-specific
Oracle patches
Easy, MOPatch-based installation
Generally the last two SBPs (current and
predecessor) are offered on SAP Marketplace1)
1) as is already the case with Oracle Windows Patch Collections
Consequences
of the new SBP patch concept:
Individual CBO merge patches or CPU patches are
no longer provided
A CPU is always part of a PSU now and therefore
also contained in the according SBP.
This means that…
…individual CPU installations are obsolete
…a concurrent installation of CPU and SBP is not
possible
Installing an SBP requires MOPatch
Oracle RAC

Partitioning Engine

Partitioning Engine
Motivation
Archiving Challenge
Archiving of historical application data in SAP
systems is a big challenge
Archiving is a continuous process and generates
significant system load
Archiving increases index and table fragmentation;
reorganization of indexes and/or tables is a time-
and resource-critical process
Range Partitioning
Can be used to separate historical and current
production data in order to minimize archiving
impacts
Problem: Application tables usually do not have a
direct time-related column in their primary key
Alternative: Use indirect time-related column like
document number, which typically exists in large
application tables and is usually part of the
primary key. However, defining suitable ranges on
document numbers is difficult
Transforming unpartitioned into partitioned tables

Resource Management
Oracle Database Resource Manager for SAP
Goal
Assign higher database priority for a specific set
of SAP dialog users/transactions
All other dialog transactions should run with
default priority
Prerequisites
Oracle 11.2.0.2 or higher
SAP kernel version 7.x or higher
SAP Bundle Patch for Oracle 11.2.0.2 from
April 2011 or higher
How It Works in Brief
Workload Management uses the
DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER package
Workload Management is done via switching of
Oracle sessions between predefined consumer
groups, to which different levels of resources are
assigned
Switching relies on rules defined by the
SET_CONSUMER_GROUP_MAPPING subprogram of
DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER
SAP database layer for Oracle (DBSL) sends
the SAP transaction details (‘client_identifier’ in
application info) to the database
