I. A teacher of health must understand the content and methods for teaching reading including:

(1) knowledge of reading processes and instruction including:

(a) the relationships between and among print processing abilities and digital content, motivation, background, and discourse knowledge, cognitive abilities, and reader’s interest and how those relationships impact comprehension; and

(b) the complexities involved in the development of academic language and the impact of that development in school success; and

(2) the ability to use a wide range of instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum materials to support reading instruction including:

(a) selection and implementation of a wide variety of before, during, and after reading strategies that develop reading meta-cognitive abilities;

(b) the ability to develop and implement effective vocabulary strategies that help students understand words including domain-specific content words;

(c) the ability to develop critical literacy skills by encouraging students to question texts and analyze texts from multiple viewpoints or perspectives; and

(d) the ability to identify instructional practices, approaches, and methods and match materials, both print and digital, to the cognitive levels of all readers, guided by an evidence-based rationale, which supports the developmental, cultural, and linguistic differences of readers.

FasTrack PostBac Modifications B

• Content Coordinators approve or note additional courses needed for the teacher candidate

• Using the transcript review results, the ED3000 instructor and content mentor help the candidate with the planning of his/her Program of Study, including the content methods competencies

• Content methods textbook is purchased this first semester and is used across the program

Page 10: MNSCU Community College Partners

FasTrack PostBac Modifications C

• Licensure candidate completes program as laid out in the Program of Study including a Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) MidPoint Assessment, Dispositions review, and MTLE testing

• Licensure candidate’s performance on Standards of Effective Practice are tracked in TaskStream, our department’s data aggregation tool, final results must meet Professional Education department criteria.

• Candidate completes supervised student teaching experience which includes completion of the required TPA by candidate

• Clinical director(s) and Registrar verify completion of requirements, including successful passing of all required testing

MentorsSecret to Success in the FasTrack Design

Each candidate finds a mentor teacher in their community prior to starting the program.

Mentor must have 3 years of public school teaching.

Mentors are approved by their principal for involvement in the program.

Mentors are licensed in the field in which the student is seeking licensure.

BSU verifies that the mentor has a standard license in the content area.

BSU Clinical Director provides support to mentors.
