tasked with, and with both Dr. Lupien and Dr. Bellar at the hospital slated to leave in April 2021, once again the association will be searching for replacements thorough-out the province, while facing stiff competition from other locations. It was mentioned by treasurer Julie Gar-diner that not only with it being tough to fill their shoes, but “finding feet to fill those shoes is expensive”.

While the Island location can certainly work in their favor, larger municipalities can offer greater financial rewards and more opportunities for spouses to find local employment. The MMHA does employ a recruiting officer to help with the doctor search as well as prepare various swag bags, gifts to lure doctors as well as provid-ing cash bonus and living arrangements. Everyone from new grads to those nearing retirement will be considered both from larger and smaller communities.

As far as maintaining the Bridgelink Property, that in-cluded a major overhaul of both furnaces, air condition-ing as well as general maintenance. The clinic does not pay for itself and the Association does have to top it up to keep the clinic open and doctors happy.

General discussion included various new fundraising ideas which the board will consider, but is well aware that donation fatigue can set in. The annual meetings will also be moved to a later time in the year within the first 6 months, with March being the most likely time. This may help increase attendance as well as ensure the yearend financial statement will be ready at the time of the meeting. Membership cost will be increased from the current $1 to $5. Additionally elections for board members will now occur every 2 years instead of annual-ly starting in 2021.

Elections resulted in just one change to the 8 member board. Ann Bell has stepped down for personal reasons with chair Lavera Crack mentioning she would like to thank Ann for all her years of service and dedication. Brian Dukes, who is a member of Jocelyn Municpial Coucil, is taking her place, but in this instance he is rep-resenting the North Shore (he owns property on North Shore). After the general elections all executive offers agreed to remain in their positions as listed below :

Creature Feature

Nuthatch

These small birds with large heads, called nuthatches, are agile birds that creep around tree trunks and will often forage upside down. There are several species of nuthatches, two of which are found on the island: the red-breasted nuthatch and the white-breasted nuthatch.

White-breasted nut-hatches are grey-blue with a white underbelly and red-breasted nuthatches are blue-grey with a rusty coloured underbelly. The main difference between the two is that the red-breasted nuthatch has a black cap and a black stripe through its eyes.

Nuthatches get their name from their tendency to jam nuts into tree bark then hammering them open with their beaks, or “hatching” them. They typically eat insects in the summer and eat conifer seeds and other seeds they cached away during the summer months. They are a common sight at bird feeders, often joining flocks of chickadees in the winter. The nuthatches can understand chickadee songs and use them to alert them of danger.

There are other species of even smaller nuthatches like the pygmy nuthatch which can be found from BC to northern Mexico and the brown-headed nuthatch, which can be found in the southeastern United States. Other species of nuthatches can be found all over Eurasia, some as big as 7 inches long and others with beautiful purple and blue plumage.

When You Need Us We are Here: What the N.S.H.N.A. Richards Landing, Matthews Site is doing for your Hospi-tal

Most people in the various communities on St. Joseph Is-land and along the North Shore are aware of the role the hospital plays in the community but some are not familiar with what a small group has been doing to make sure the hospital continues to serve the community and has the equipment it needs in order to do so effectively.

Here is a list of some of the items The North Shore Health Network Auxiliary Richards Landing Matthews Site have purchased in the past two years:

• Defibrillator$11,000• Computer $900• Four outlets for televisions including one for our paramedics $108 per month• A television for the waiting room to provide health related information • Refrigerator $800• Ultra Freeze Liquid Nitrogen Sprayer $1,300• Pediatric Cart $1,800

As well• they have created a bursary for Central Algoma Secondary School of $500 which is awarded annu ally to a graduate pursuing studies in the health field• they hold a Health Week Fair annually to provide an opportunity for the community to meet with over twenty health related agencies• they organize and sponsor the Richards Landing Community Night • they have provided entertainment with the Life on the Farm and Call of the Wild fundraisers• they have organized Snowfest for the past two years on the last day of the Christmas break to provide a day of outdoor fun for the families of St. Joseph Island

The N.S.H.N. Auxiliary Richards Landing, Matthews Site is happy to welcome new members to assist in the work they are doing for Matthews Hospital. Call Joan Clute at 705-246-0003 for information.

The N.S.H.N. Auxiliary Richards Landing Matthews Site thanks the communities of St. Joseph Island and the North Shore for their continued support. If you are interested in donating, contact Barb Jackson at 705 – 246 – 1120.

Peanut Squares With milk chocolate and oats

8 x 8 pan

½ cup unsalted butter, softened (120 ml)½ cup brown sugar (120 ml)½ cup white sugar (120 ml)1/3 cup smooth, natural peanut butter (80 ml)1 egg½ tsp vanilla (2.fml)¾ cup rolled oats (180 ml)1 cup unbleached flour (240 ml)½ tsp baking soda1/3 tsp salt (1.2 ml)4 oz milk chocolate, chopped into large chunks (120 g)

Icing½ cup peanut butter (120 ml)2 Tbsp soft butter (30 ml)½ tsp vanilla (2.5 ml)1 cup icing sugar (240 ml)¼ cup heavy cream (60 ml)

Pre-heat oven to 350 F. Grease an 8 x 8 inch pan and set aside. Cream together the butter, sugars and pea-nut butter until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla and mix well.

Combine the oats, flour, soda and salt in a separate bowl. Add this to the butter/peanut butter mix and stir well. Fold in the chocolate chunks. Spread into the prepared pan and bake 25 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Prepare the icing by creaming together the peanut butter, butter and vanilla. Blend in icing sugar. Stir in cream until you get a nice spreading consistency, using more if necessary. Ice the cooled squares and decorate with additional melted milk chocolate driz-zled over top, if you like. Divide into squares.

(I actually prefer dark semi sweet chocolate) (your choice)
