Mme. JOSÉ GRAYVILL(E) [s]. Who was this mysterious singer? The Columbia Catalogues

of the period (1906) mention that she was a friend of Massenet (as were a number of female singers). Was José (sometimes Josè) Graville (or Grayville) her husband’s name (as with Mme. Charles Cahier) or a nom-du-disque? There seems to be no trace of anyone with this name in music journals of the period, yet this is obviously a more than competent singer with particularly able coloratura skills.

FERNANDO GUARNERI [b]. Napoli,

1888-New York City, 1940. Guarneri studied

in Naples and appeared in opera in Europe, coming to the U.S. around 1915. He sang here with the touring San Carlo Opera and other companies and was popular in leading U.S. music festivals. His career after 1915 appears to have been exclusively in America, where he also became a citizen. He made a few records for several companies, including Edison, Victor, vertical Aeolian-Vocalian and Columbia. The reviewer of a 1920 performance of Cavalleria Rusticana gave Guarneri the following praise: “May Barron sang the part of Lola with a pretty voice, but we are tempted to wonder why she preferred Turiddu, sung by Eugenio Cibelli, to the virile and excellent Alfio of Fernando Guarneri, who sang with fervor and gave a good portrayal of the part. He displayed a fine voice of excellent quality, very well produced. He has a good stage presence, and his work was satis-factory in all respects.”

HEINRICH HENSEL [t]. Neustadt, 1874-Hamburg, 1935. Hensel was encouraged to

study voice by Felix Mottl, which he did with Gustav Walter in Vienna, Eduard Bellwidt in Frankfurt and F. Emerich in Milan. His debut was in Freiburg in 1897, where he remained until 1900. He had great success at Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, and also as Parsifal at Bayreuth. Also singing with the Metropolitan (debut as Lohengrin, 1911) and the Chicago Opera in the U.S. and at Covent Garden, Hensel served as the leading Heldentenor at the Hamburg Opera from 1912 through 1929.

1898-Newport Beach, CA, 1975. Herbert (born

Hostetter) studied for an operatic career. With no prior stage experience she made a very successful debut with the Chicago Opera in 1920 as Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme with tenor Alessandro Bonci. The strain of operatic singing, however, created vocal problems and she subsequently restudied for operetta, making her Broadway debut in 1923. For the next eleven years she was hailed as one of the leading operetta stars of the period, creating many works including four Sigmund Romberg operettas alone. She retired in 1934 at the point when interest in operetta on Broadway began to decline.

GRACE HOFFMAN [s]. An American color-

atura soprano, born circa 1890, Hoffman was active in the concert and opera world for a decade or so, beginning around 1913. She toured with Sousa’s Band, the Aborn Opera, the Milan Opera Company (a U.S. group) and appeared with the Josiah Zuro Opera Company in New York City. Here she created a “decided sensation”, singing roles such as Oscar, Gilda and Micaëla. Hoffman attributed her stage success “to a thorough study of psychology”. What became of her after the earlier 1920s doesn’t seem to be known.

CHARLES HOLLAND [t]. Norfolk, VA, 1909-Amsterdam, 1987. Originally inspired by

hearing the voice of Caruso on a record, Mr. Holland studied voice in New York. At first, his only opportunity was in popular music, where he sang for three seasons with Fletcher Henderson’s band. It was subsequently with the Hall Johnson Choir that he began his career as a classical

soloist, but he left the U.S. for Europe where opportunities for black artists were more readily available. He had a successful career there, particularly in Holland (appropriately enough) and France, where he was in 1954 the first black tenor to appear with the Paris Opèra-Comique. Despite his success, racism was still encountered. One episode was with tenor Eddy Ruhl, who refused to share a dressing room with Mr. Holland at the Norwegian Opera in 1961. Racial matters had improved sufficiently by then so it was Mr. Ruhl who was fired by the management. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1969, the first time in twenty years, Mr. Holland had considerable success as a recitalist and soloist with orchestras, although it wasn’t until 1982 that he made his Carnegie Hall solo recital debut. I remember reading a NY Times review of his singing the “Improvviso” from Andrea Chenier with a New York City orchestra in an outdoor concert, the reviewer suggesting that the tenor should be welcomed by the NYC Opera. Mr. Holland was in his 70s at the time.

MARIA HUSSA [-GREVE] [s]. Vienna,

1893-Chicago, 1980. A pupil of Elise Elizza,

Hussa made her debut with the Vienna Volksoper in 1917 and the next year with the Vienna Staatsoper. A principal soprano, among her creations was the title role in Korngold’s Der Wunder der Heliane in Hamburg, 1927. She emigrated to the U.S. in 1934 and was on the

roster of the Metropolitan Opera, 1940-41, singing one performance of the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavaler, also performing the same role with the Chicago Opera as well as Sieglinde in Die Walküre. Upon her retirement she and her husband, Simon Greve (a pianist) volunteered at Chicago’s Schubert Music School, where they both were on the opera faculty. She also taught at the Sherwood Music School and privately, as well working as a baker and a master chef. Her death was a result of a mugging in a Chicago subway station.

is stated as having been an American of Russian-Polish ancestry. His work was centered in the New York area. Beginning in 1905 through 1912, Janpolski recorded for Victor. DOROTHY JARDON [s] 1883?-1966. Jardon’s career began as a published composer in the very early 1900s of non-art songs, such as Broncho Buster, Baboon Bungalo and Under the Hebrew Moon. She then developed a career as a singer in Broadway musicals, including success in England. From 1915 she concentrated on vaudeville, but in 1919 reinvented herself as an opera singer, appearing in the title role of the Chicago Opera 1919 premiere of Giordano’s Fedora, with Alessandro Dolci, Marguerite Namara and Riccardo Stracciari. Jardon subsequently appeared in opera with Gallo’s touring company and as a vaudeville headliner with the Keith-Orpheum vaudeville which, from 1924, included work in movie theaters. Her career seems to have diminished with the fading of vaudeville and her 1928 marriage to Henry E. Oelrichs, a “New York society man”. She was, according to one article, a devout Catholic who had been “a daily communicant since 1915” (until her departure from New York to Los Angeles in the late 1920s) of St. Malachy’s, “The Actor’s Church”, at 241 West 49th St. in Manhattan. In 1923 she donated “a statue of the Blessed Mother” to St. Malachy’s that still may be there today. Jardon made three (unissued) trial recordings for Victor in the ‘teens and then a group of published discs for Brunswick, beginning in 1919.

She appeared at the Proms in 1913 under Sir Henry Wood and was heard as Wellgunde and the Woodbird in Wagner’s Ring cycle at Covent Garden under Artur Nikisch in 1914. Most of her career was in concert and as a staff artist for HMV, for whom she sang in several of the first complete recorded Gilbert and Sullivan operas directed by Rupert D’Oyly Carte.

Jörn studied in Berlin and made his debut in Freiburg, 1896, as Lionel in Martha. From 1902-08 he was a leading tenor with the Berlin Hofoper and from 1909-1914 he also sang lead- ing roles with the Metropolitan Opera. During this period, his wife, soprano Elsa Jörn-Becker, be- came enamored of a Berlin dentist and asked her husband for a divorce, which the tenor allowed. She subsequently became disenchanted with dental life and sought to reconcile, but Jörn re- fused and advised the press, "I shall live for art alone”. Despite the outbreak of the First World War, Jörn returned to the U.S. and in 1916 be- came a citizen. According to one account, he soon after lost his fortune through speculation and retired to Denver as a singing teacher. Invited by

Johanna Gadski to join her touring German Opera Company in 1928, the professionally all but forgotten Jörn was able to resuscitate his career through acclaimed performances as Tris- tan. After the death of Gadski in 1932, he returned to Denver and continued teaching.

Grasse, 1868-Vittel, 1933. A February 5, 1910 issue of Musical America indicated the impor-

tance of Journet to the Victor Company by describing his travel from Paris to Camden just to make records, “the most unique trip ever made by any singer.” Despite it being the height of the Paris Opéra season, he was granted a special leave by the directors “to come to America to fill an engagement with the Victor company for the sole purpose of making records of concerted arias [sic] in conjunction with Caruso, Geraldine Farrar and other famous artists. While the basso was here the company availed itself of the opportunity to remake all [sic] of the old records of Journet’s solos.” A few years later he made a similar trip, but some special engagements were arranged with the Chicago Opera in conjunction with his recording activities to make his stay even more lucrative. His career continued unabated until the year of his death. Journet’s son, also Marcel Journet (1895-1973) and looking very much like his father, was an actor on both the French stage and in American and French films.

politan Opera, 1919-1921, where she appeared as Micaëla in Carmen as well as in several smaller roles. Active through the 1920s as a concert and oratorio artist, she made her New York debut recital at Aeolian Hall in 1926. This included Italian, German and French repertoire as well as the premiere of Henry Souvaine’s cycle, “The Jazz City”. Of this group, Miss Kellogg stated, “They are terribly difficult to sing, but it was worth the effort.” (Souvaine, by the way, was producer of the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts from 1940 until his death in 1954, the work then taken over by his wife, Geraldine.) From 1929 to 1931 Kellogg was a Victor staff artist, her name appearing on only one label (as “assisting artist” to Richard Crooks) although she was heard in various Victor ensembles, as well as a group of radio programs for the Freihofer Baking Company. ARTHUR C. KRAFT [t]. Buffalo, NY, 1888 - ? . Born in Buffalo and raised in Chicago,

Kraft gained early musical experience as a chorister in Chicago’s St. Chrysostom’s Episcopal Church. Although he studied law, passed the bar exams and practiced for two years, his interest and talent in singing took over. He studied with Prof. Marescalchi and then coached in oratorio work with Dr. Charles Allum. Further studies were with Frank La Forge and Arthur Burton. His professional career began in 1919 and continued through at least 1945. A New York recital debut was at Town Hall in 1921. Much of his career was devoted to oratorio and concert work, and he was a familiar soloist with groups such as the Boston Handel and Haydn Society, the New York Oratorio Society, the Bethlehem (PA) Bach Festival, the Detroit Symphony, St. Louis Symphony and so on. From 1922 for a lengthy period, Kraft was tenor soloist at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City. He apparently taught at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, beginning in 1937. Details following 1945 haven’t been found. He is not known to have recorded (other than a trial recording for Victor). This unique private acoustic disc below is of four Frank La Forge songs, accompanied by the composer. The labels are hand written in ink and there is no identification as to the recording company.

MARIA KURENKO [s]. Tomsk, Siberia, 1890 – New York City, 1980. Kurenko studied

singing at the Moscow Conservatory under the famous vocal pedagogue Umberto Masetti, who also taught for various periods Nezhdanova, Koshetz and Obukova, among many others. At the same time she studied Law at the University of Moscow. After her debut in 1914 at the Kahrkov Opera House as Antonia in The Tales of Hoffman, her success was such that she decided to pursue music professionally and leave the law. She was heard in various houses in Russia and Europe.

Her New York debut was at Carnegie Hall in 1926, and she also appeared in opera in San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia, but it was in concert where she gained her greatest American success. Also, she was frequently heard here on the radio from her debut year into the 1940s and on LPs in the 1950s. Kurenko became a U.S. citizen and was active on the concert stage into the 1960s. The last five years of her life she resided at the Mary Manning Nursing Home in Manhattan.

EDWARD LLOYD [t]. London, 1845-Worthing, 1927. Lloyd began his musical life as a boy

church chorister. His debut was in 1859 at the Crystal Palace when the tenor soloist for the scheduled performance of Händel’s Messiah was suddenly taken ill and young Lloyd jumped in to save the day. His subsequent career included just about all the major musical festivals in England. As a friend of Sir Arthur Sullivan since their choirboy years at Westminster, Lloyd was selected by Sullivan to create the tenor solo parts in several of his oratorios, including The Martyr of Antioch (1880) and The Golden Legend (1886). He also created the tenor solos in Gounod’s

Redemption (1882) and Mors et Vita (1885), as well as the leading tenor portions in many other oratorios, including Elgar’s Caractacus (1898) and The Dream of Gerontius (1900). His U.S. debut was at the 1888 Cincinnati Festival. While he never appeared in staged operatic performances, he participated in concert presentations of portions of various Wagnerian operas. He retired in 1900. Aside from making records and appearing at the Coronation of King George V in 1911, he appears not to have sung in public since his retirement.

He subsequently was a member of touring companies for a few seasons, which included visits in Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand. From the early 1920s through 1939 he appeared in various smaller Italian houses as well as in Holland and Monte Carlo. Lois suffered from a progressive vision problem. Eventual blindness ended his career.

FELICE LYNE [s]. Slater, MO, 1891-Allentown, PA, 1935. Lyne’s vocal studies were with

Matilde Marchesi in Paris. She was at the time heard by Oscar Hammerstein, then recruiting artists for his new London Opera House. Lyne was put under contract for five years and made a sensational debut as Gilda in Rigoletto in 1911. After the start of a second successful season, she failed to make headway in a contract dispute with Hammerstein and at one point “became enraged” and wacked him with a score she was carrying. It didn’t much matter, as Hammerstein’s London venture shortly went out of business after only two years. Lyne subsequently toured Europe, Australia and Canada with the Quinlan Opera Company and then made a debut with the

Boston Opera in 1914, again as Gilda. The company basically folded in 1916 and Lyne left for Europe, where she divided her time between London and Paris, although the last trace of her as a singer appears to have been in Boston late in 1915. She returned to her parents’ residence in Allentown, PA, in 1932, “in poor health” (not explained further) and died there three years later. Nothing seems to have been known of her activities subsequent to 1916. During her meteoric career she sang a number of roles, including Eva (Die Meistersinger), Mimí, Nedda, Violetta, Rosina, Juliette and Elvira (in Auber’s La Muette de Portici). Only four recorded sides exist by this petite and charming soprano.

CHRISTIE MACDONALD [s]. Pitou, Nova Scotia, 1875-Fairfield, CT, 1962. Macdonald made her stage

debut in Erminie, New York, 1893, and became a popular operetta star, one of her best known creations having been the leading role in Reinhardt’s The Spring Maid in 1910. Her career continued until 1920, when she retired. She divorced her first husband, William Jefferson, the son of actor Joseph Jefferson, whom she had married in 1901. In 1903, however, she conceived a child with NY State Senator Timothy Sullivan. Times being as they were, the child was placed in the New York

Foundling Hospital. Jefferson subsequently divorced her, and in 1911 she married Henry L. Gillespie, son of a weathly Pittsburgh contractor. They had one daughter, Christie. Macdonald spent her last years living with her daughter and grandchildren in Westport, CT.

the son of an Austrian general, Josef prepared first in Vienna for a diplomatic career, then studied philosophy in Graz. He also had lessons in violin, voice and speech in his earlier years. Appearing in 1911-15 with the opera in Graz, he then became a member of the Vienna Volksoper from 1915-18. In 1919 he made his Vienna Opera debut as the Spirit Messenger in the premiere of of Die Frau ohne Schatten (Richard Strauss) and remained a member of that company until his death, also singing 1934-42 with the Berlin Opera. His debut at Bayreuth in 1932 in Tannhäuser under Toscanini was a great success, as was his work in Salzberg, beginning in 1942. From 1931-35 he taught at the Vienna Academy of Music.

German and Austria through 1932 and creator of many operetta roles. Her sudden departure was because she was Jewish (although she had converted to Protestantism in 1903), and she eventually resided for a period in London. She was befriended by Noël Coward, and she starred there in his 1938 Operette. The next year Massary emigrated to Beverly Hills, CA, where she remained until her death, summering in Germany from 1952 on. It appears that she never appeared on stage again after arriving in California.

and made his debut there at the Teatro Abreu in Donizetti’s La Favorita, 1915. He subsequently was a member of a touring company that visited New York, singing a wide repertoire (zarzuela, opera, folk music, popular songs). Subsequently he was hired by Victor, for whom he recorded a group of arias and Spanish songs. He was particularly popular in the U.S. for his singing of lighter Spanish music, but in Mexico he retained his role as a leading lyric operatic tenor. Retiring in 1944, Mejia subsequently taught voice.

To me the voice sounds au-thoritative and bold, more along the lines of Melba on records (in many instan-ces) than Adams. What’s your opinion? This is the best transfer and a re-markable, truly “Golden

wed to W. Fulton Melhuish, she adjusted her name to a more easily pronounced Melius (first Meluis) and studied with Jean de Reszke. Throughout the 1920s she appeared in opera, notably with the Paris Opéra, the Opéra-Comique and in the U.S. with the Chicago and San Francisco Operas. She was identified as a “coloratura specialist” and her repertoire included such roles as Rosina, Gilda, and the Queen of the Night. As a note of local pride (and a fact which likely no one else in Amityville knows or cares about), Melius and her husband resided here in Amityville for a period beginning in the later 1920s (as did two more famous blossoming musical celebrities a decade later: Peter Pears and Benjamin Britten).

(England), 1978. Meyen studied in Berlin and

made her debut at the Hamburg Opera, 1916, as Marie in Donizetti’s Daughter of the Regiment. She subsequently appeared in leading coloratura roles in various German houses, including the Berlin

State Opera and also sang with the Vienna Staatsoper. An important part of her career was as a concert singer. Being Jewish, her engagements in Germany ended abruptly in 1933. In 1939 she resettled in England (Woking, Surrey), where she taught singing, unfortunately not continuing her singing career. Hers was a voice of particularly appealing quality and exceptional technique.

made his Met debut in 1892 (as Wilhelm Meister in Mignon) and appeared at Covent Garden as well. He was born in 1859 (another source gives 1855) in Agen, France and died in France in 1895. The 1907 recording below gives the artist as M. Montariol (see Kelly’s matrix listings where he is listed as Sebastien), and it is thought this tenor is the son of the earlier Sebastian, assuming the elder tenor’s death date to be correct. A bit confusing!

Wilkes-Barre, PA and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Morrisey studied piano and organ and became a professional choir director at the age of sixteen. She subsequently studied voice with Dudley Buck and Richard Hageman and made her concert debut at Aeolian Hall, NY, in 1913. Her career was mainly on the concert and oratorio stages. In 1920 Morrisey wed Royden James Keith, “a pioneer in the phonograph industry”, who died in 1955. His wife was still living at the time.

Russian opera houses and from 1912 to 1914 was soloist with the Theatre of Mu-sical Drama in Petrograd. His repertoire included a variety of major roles, including Boris Godounov, Don Basilio (in Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Boito’s Mefi-stofele, and Kotchubey in Mazeppa to mention just a few. In addition to being a gifted singer, he was an “intelligent” and “accom-plished” actor. In the

1920s he toured abroad, including Japan, where the rare disc listed below was recorded.

OS-KE-NON-TON [b]. Chaghnawaga, Qué-

bec, Canada, 1888-1955. Son of the Tribal Chief,

Os-Ke-Non-Ton was raised on a Mohawk Indian reservation. He attended public school near Toronto, returning to his home after his formal education. Serving as a guide, his voice was supposedly discovered while he was heard singing by a group of tourists. He was then provided the opportunity to study voice in New York. Soon he was on the vaudeville circuit and working as a solo performer, singing native songs and arrangements of Indian music by various then-contemporary composers. He also played the Indian Medicine Man in Coleridge-Taylor’s Hiawatha in London’s Royal Albert Hall. He was a great success in touring England and Belgium in particular, crossing the Atlantic over the years around 40 times, and was a familiar voice on the U.S. radio. Among his notable concerts was one in Hollywood Bowl, 1927, where he entertained an audience of 45,000.
