Big Brother's Shabby & Ife: By thepeople who know....When Ife Kuku and Shabby Katchadourian joined the final ever series of Big Brother, younger residents of Bucks couldn’t quite believe they had two locals in the famous house.

Shabby Katchadourian AKA Keeley Flanders who attended Ousedale Secondary School in Newport Pagnell and Ife Kuku who was raised in Milton Keynes and also attended Ousedale have both survived eviction so far, and judging by their popularity on Facebook, they have a good chance of winning.

As well attending the same school the pair also come from similar backgrounds, with both of them already seasoned performers in the entertainment industry.

Shabby is a former child actress who appeared in the children’s favourite Black Beauty. Her acting ability took her as far as the major Hollywood remake of the Parent Trap where she lost out on the lead role to celebrity car crash Lindsay Lohan.

Shabby quickly turned to music in her youth joining numerous bands, the most well known being female rock group, Voodoo Hussy.

Her thirst for acting was never completely quenched and she returned to film, but this time behind the camera, even visiting Bucks to recruit young actors.

These days Shabby is a self confessed squatter in an abandoned Victorian house in South London.

So how would those who knew her best describe her?

“She can be a bit of a fiery character, but you get used to it. If something winds her up she just needs to throw a little wobbly and be left alone for a bit then she's fine,” says Voodoo Hussy lead drummer Leanna.

“I hope people get to see that she's a very intelligent, honest, funny person that's always up for a laugh and always there for her friends. She's her own person and has always been that animated and passionate.”

We asked local dancer and actress Vanessa Vanderpuye if the same could be said of Ife.

“I met Ife on the dancing circuit and she was lovely but very much focused on her ambition of becoming a world class dancer, she always won the major competitions because she was such a talented and inspiring dancer,” Vanessa

gushes.

“I went to Big Brother’s Big Mouth where she was getting stick for not being as interesting as the other housemates, but that is what Ife is like, she isn’t loud or obnoxious, she never intended to go in the house and cause any controversy, its just not her style.”

Ife it seems was destined for stardom as one quarter of the now defunct girl group, Simply Brown Sugar. She now works as a professional dancer for the likes of Cheryl Cole and hopes to pursue a solo singing career.

MK native Fathomless 1, a rapper who worked with the ambitious starlet called her a “feisty character” who is “dedicated to anything she does, be it singing or dancing”.

Although still early days, friends of the talented pair still rate their chances of winning Big Brother as high.

“Course Shabby can win!” says Leanna.“I personally think Josie, Shabby and maybe Nathan as final three.”

“Ife gets along with everyone so has a great chance of winning, I hope she stays in the house as she’s interesting to watch and the media coverage will do wonders for her music career,” said Vanessa.

Young Entrepreneur Carly Ward, aged 20 has just launched Young Entrepreneur Society (YES) based near Aylesbury helping young people nationally to get into business and learn personal development skills. Carly has always had a fascination with business and following a period of unemployment she decided to create a simple 12 Steps to Success Programme for other young people. She has interviewed some of the UK’s top entrepreneurs she calls Millionaire Mentors including Levi Roots of Reggae Reggae sauce fame, Mike Clare of Dreams PLC, Peter Kelly of Softcat PLC voted Number 1 company in the UK to work for in the Sunday Times survey, Charlie Mullins of Pimlico Plumbers and Julie Meyer of Dragons’ Den Online to name just a few! She started by asking them how they became successful and from this has created her 12 Steps, an easy to understand system and is available online. Says Carly “Anyone can be an Entrepreneur and in today’s climate more and more young people are having to consider starting their own business rather than relying on getting a job. Unemployment is high right now and there is little potential in getting a decent job these days. My own experience

showed that there was little help for us young people who want to achieve in life so I intend to change all that”. The 12 Steps to Success Programme is also available to schools and Carly is already talking at Government level to get the programme into the UK school curriculum for Enterprise. She has already been given the support of Princes Risborough School who have joined YES and both are really excited about getting the information to their students.Carly says “If I can do it, anyone can. You just need a lot of determination and passion with your idea to make it real – everything I have learned is in the programme”.She started with just a small loan from The Prince’s Trust and wants her story to inspire as many young people as possible. Membership is only £10 per month and the first month is free to take a trial first.

“Confessions of a…Chatline Operator”

After deciding I had finally had enough of the rat race and was on the verge of slitting my wrists, I handed in my notice at my miserable admin job and dedicated my efforts to finding a new and meaningful career as a model. Needless to say after a few weeks on the dole I was beginning to realize that finding work was not going to be all plain sailing. I found myself working as a shitty kitchen porter for minimum wage and lying (badly) to my friends that I was actually attending castings for major magazines and TV shows. Tired of rejection after rejection whilst attending auditions I trawled job websites looking for something to tide me over. Flicking anxiously through the work from home scams something finally caught my eye.“CHATLINE OPERATOR NEEDED-£300 P/W!" I giggled

coyly to myself as I pondered what the work would entail. Whispering sweet nothings breathlessly into the ears of dirty old married men wasn’t exactly a big turn on for me, but if I was going to get paid for it then why not? I called my ex for some frank advice who wasn’t that thrilled to say the least.“Your gonna be talking to a bunch of horny weirdos who’ll want you to squat on their faces and piss on them,” he said.I laughed. “Your just jealous that we don’t talk dirty anymore….you can’t argue that I wouldn’t be good at it.”So after ignoring the advice of my ex and against my better judgement I embarked on my first night as a chatline operator. I was encouraged by my employer to upload some saucy images of myself on a dating website and wait patiently for the interest to come pouring in. In little under an hour of posting my pictures

horny (and very desperate) husbands, fathers and random singletons began flooding me with offers of dates, romantic getaways abroad and of course some boudoir action or “NSA” as the regulars say. My inbox already had 200 messages and was bursting to capacity when finally after much sordid flirting in the chat room and some x-rated camera footage, one gorgeous blonde offered to call….

Find out soon what was said during our writer’s first call and what she will do when the lines between business and pleasure become blurred….

We have profiled M>>Magazine cover star singer & song writer Rocky Nti and find out how he copes with his growing (mostly female) fanbase! Words by Letitiah Obiri

James “Rocky” Nti sounds wiser beyond his years; he has a real sense of maturity about him that is clearly rooted in his soulful music. A positive outlook and an unshakeable faith in God have shaped the raw talent that the musician has been blessed with and although fairly new on the scene, Rocky has every intention of leaving an indelible mark.“The best advice I have been given in terms of my music, is just to do me. I am not trying to be anything or anyone I’m not,” he says. “I want to be different and be remembered for that.”A voice and style like Rocky’s is very difficult to forget. With a sound like warm melted caramel, Rocky has a skill most accomplished artists have unfortunately lost.“Song writing definitely has some skill to it and people always ask how I go about penning my songs. The lyrics might come when I’m walking home or a melody might hit me and I’ll have an urge to write something.” His acoustic style sets him apart from mainstream musicians and its little wonder Nti views John Legend and Paolo Nutini as the source of his

inspiration.“Nutini really got me into acoustic music, and along with my mother he indirectly encouraged me to pick up a guitar. Legend is just so talented and has real emotion when he sings, for me both of them, especially Nutini strip down music to its essentials, and that’s what acoustic music is really all about.”His music certainly is easy on the ears, and is wowing audiences on YouTube who leave nothing but praise and words of encouragement. Nti likened his excitement to that of a giddy schoolboy when he found out how many views his videos have received on YouTube.“We didn’t expect to get so many views for “No Place for a Gentleman” the video was just a spur of the moment thing we planned one night, the next thing you know the video is getting over 10,000 views and I have had people from all over the world messaging me! The reception has just been crazy,” he says. With his music career taking off we ask Nti if he will have time in his life for the ladies once he’s a major superstar.“Life is kinda crazy at the moment, I have a really busy summer ahead of me with rehearsals, live gigs and studio sessions but if the right girl came along I would make time.”Does that mean he’s single? With all those female admirers online?“Yes, I am uninvolved at the moment,” he says coyly, “but if you listen to my music its all about girls and relationships, so there’s a part of me that’s looking for Mrs Right.”Six Strings To The Heart will be released on Spotify and Itunes on July 31st 2010.

Make way for a Gentleman

Page 9: M>>Magazine
Page 10: M>>Magazine

How did you start your career? I have always been a big fan of music and the way it brings people together. As a big raver, I was always out on the urban music scene and after watching DJ’s play I told myself that I could do that. So I bought some cheap decks and practiced for months on end in my room, honing my talent before playing for radio stations such Super Jam, Into beats, Déjà vu, Freeze FM and JamRock. I started off as a Jungle MC in 1993 before moving into DJing a few years later. I do prefer Djing as I think there a skill to it compared to being an MC.Describe the highlights of your job: I am doing something that is all for the love of the music, I like to know I can bring people together and promote positivity when I play. Some of the best highlights of my job include meeting big celebrities such as Wesley Snipes, Amy Winehouse and Kidulthood star Adam Deacon. My biggest achievement was when I was played a live set for DMX, I must’ve been quite good though because I was the only DJ to not get bottled after the crowd turned violent. What are some of

the downsides of your job? There’s too much politics in the music industry, people become very selfish and greedy. There’s been cases of promoters not paying DJ’s at the end of their set, conveniently claiming they’ve run out of cash. Other times leading DJ’s will be put on a flyer to draw a bigger crowd then when you arrive at the venue, the DJ isn’t even there. Promoters don’t really follow through with what they say they are going to do, there’s just a lot of a talk and no action, and it is a very fickle industry. What are some of your words of advice for

aspiring young DJ’s?I would say practice every day if you want to be a successful DJ. Don’t try and cut corners by launching straight into live sets. Practice for a year in your room, put a mix tape out to promote your talent, do some radio to create a following then you can start approaching the clubs to do sets. I think it’s important in this industry to be confident and stand up for yourself, or people will walk all over you. Make sure you discuss your fee with promoters and set out the terms of your set before the event. To avoid not getting paid on the night, ensure you already made an oral agreement of your terms or better still take a deposit, there’s too many dodgy promoters out there looking to rip you off. Any plans for the future? My dream job would be working as a music producer. My ideal collaboration would be with either Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, or Drake. Band member setting up before hitting the stage

Chilling out in Campbell Park

Fans in the new music tent

Page 12: M>>Magazine

The Midsummer Fayre hit Campbell Park in the second weekend of June, the sunny weekend brought a variety of talent to Milton Keynes, it was like the Britain’s Got Talent in a festival setting, this awesome weekend brought some absolutely fantastic unsigned music acts to light and performed on the MK Live Acoustic Stage, bringing us the best of our local music scene.

Jon Kendall, a singer songwriter from Milton Keynes has began the summer with a list of credible gigs, by the end of the summer he will have played probably every venue in Milton Keynes, good job he has managed to get a gig at ‘The Constitution’ in London, one of Camden Town’s many thriving music venues, this will definitely put him in good stead for the future. What does the future hold? “I’m not just a musician, I’m a manager at a special needs school and a Dad, so to be able to live off being a musician would be a dream” as any artist would say indeed the dream is to be earning money from what you love to do. In his past, a music career of band mates, and little coverage however now he is on the yellow brick road to fame. It’s been an incredibly successful year for Jon, he has performed very major music platform in Milton Keynes and has secured a gig in Camden Town, and his future ideal seems more than likely. His career started at the open mic nights at the Sno! Bar in Xscape, another great platform for unsigned talent where he has progressed to a credible enough talent to hit the London stage.

His acoustic style and catchy melodies

make him a perfect contender for the 2010 music scene, his music makes fair comparisons to the chart topping bands today. He is currently spending time in the studio preparing his first ever album release, you listen to these recordings and he has included the full ‘shebang’ the whole band set up is there, and the melodies are enhanced, the rhythms are clear and the sound is full of life, but when you see him live, this is stripped back to just a beautifully toned voice and its best friend the guitar, almost as perfect together as butter and toast. When talking to Jon about the future he said “I hope that someday I’ll be able get a band to perform the fully arranged tracks” Another thought into about what could be the near future. I asked him too about his writing style the way his goes about putting down a track, his lyrics

especially resemble real life situations, he said “I write for my audience, the lyrics never really resemble my own life, I write what I feel and want people to get something out of what I’ve written” And

that’s exactly what he does, his music relates to anyone. His set at the ‘Midsummer Fayre’ in Campbell Park, Milton Keynes was twenty minutes of summer bliss. He has just a distinctive voice which you could compare to the likes of David Gray and Chris Martin. My favourite track of his is ‘Somebody’ the song just shows off his amazing talents, as a songwriter and as a vocalist, it is as if he has just stood on the roof of the Xscape building and put two fingers up to the rest of the Milton Keynes music scene, and he is the king of this castle. Find out for yourself, check out his MySpace for live dates and a preview of his music:

http://www.myspace.com/jonkendallmusic

A wealth of talent graced the Midsummer Fayre MK Live stage that weekend, but one more band really stood out for me, a band known as Isabelle, so beautiful, simple, it fuses together several styles and really has the vintage style which is so fashionable in the music industry currently, they have many dates coming up from Newport Pagnell to Aylesbury, I urge you to catch them this upcoming summer, their music should be on your summer playlists, they have their second album out now, check out their MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/thebandisabelle

Later this year, a concert will take place in tribute to Michael Jackson, that concert is rumoured to take place on the 29th August (Jackson’s birthday). It seems like only yesterday, but remarkably the 25th June 2010 marked the one year anniversary of the death of Michael Jackson. Jackson was a performer with immense talent. A talent that first reared its head when he was only a small child. As the stand out star from the group The Jackson 5. The Jackson 5 had a string of number one hits, with their first four records. Eventually though, the talent and ambition of Michael outgrew that of the Jackson 5 and lure of going solo became too great to resist. Teaming up with Quincy Jones, 1978 saw the release of Jackson’s first solo record, Off The Wall. It proved to be a massive hit, selling 10 million copies and cementing Jackson as a solo performer. Jackson was determined to make his next record even bigger than Off The Wall. That next record would be Thriller.

Although subsequent albums such as Bad

and Dangerous sold well, nothing would ever match Thriller. Thriller would prove to be Jackson’s peak, from which he would start to slide. His ever changing outward appearance seemed to signify an inward torment. In 1993 the first of the child molestation claims were made. Jackson settled out of court for a reported $20m. To some this was simply his way of making everything disappear. To others it was an admission of guilt. Similar allegations were again made after an interview in 2001 in which Jackson naively revealed that he still shared his bed with children. This one did go to court but happily for Jackson and his fans, he was acquitted of any wrong doing.

Then in 2009 Jackson called a press conference where he dramatically announced that he was to play a staggering 50 gigs at the London O2 arena, as a final goodbye. The eyes of the world were once again focussing their gaze upon the frail looking figure of Jackson and wondering just how he would manage to do it. Sadly, Jackson didn’t even make the first gig. On the 25th June 2009, in what will surely go down as one of the great where were you when... moments. Michael Jackson died of a cardiac arrest.

If the media were fascinated with Jackson

when he was alive, they were positively obsessed with him once he had died. After his death had been announced news programmes were made up almost entirely of stories about his death, particularly the suspicious circumstances in which he died. If it wasn’t news reports on his death, then there were television tributes and investigations in to his death that were being broadcast. No wonder then that there were over 700 complaints to the BBC over the amount of coverage that Jackson’s received. This unprecedented level of media attention after his death seemed to reach a crescendo at the televised memorial service, held at the Staples centre where Jackson was rehearsing for his upcoming tour. 17,500 tickets to the public memorial service would be given out in a global lottery and after only 24 hours of the opening of applications, more than 1.2 million people had applied. Jackson once said that his funeral would be “the greatest show on earth.” It was certainly a spectacle, full of Michael’s celebrity friends and family. But the most poignant and genuinely heart braking moment of the night came right at the end when Michael’s

daughter Paris declared him “the best father you could ever imagine”Jackson’s death also hit his fans hard, but out of this tragedy something beautiful happened. Only a day after his death was announced videos kept appearing on You Tube in tribute to their fallen hero. Flash mob dances were quickly organised all over Europe, in cities such as London, Paris and Stockholm. The result was that groups of Jackson fans all danced together to his hits, (usually Beat it or Thriller) in a united show of loyalty and devotion to the man they called, ‘The King of Pop’.

Like many others my age, Jackson was the first singer that I really got in to. I can still remember dancing around my bedroom to the History album as a kid. When I’ve talked to people about Michael Jackson and his death, reactions vary, at the time everyone was in total shock, after all he was only 50. Yet even now his death still affects people, I asked several my friends how they felt a year on after his death and the responses came back: “there won’t be anyone else like him again”, “losing him was like losing a friend” and “I still can’t believe he’s actually gone.” It’s clear that the death of Michael Jackson is still fresh in the mind and the wounds are still sore. It seems unlikely that the death of another pop star will ever have the same impact that the death of Michael Jackson did.

Andre Maingot aka Fathomless 1 has proven the UK is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to rap. A dedicated follower of Hip Hop, he started Djing and breaking before concentrating solely on becoming an MC. He is a conscious rapper using his life experiences and views on the world around him to inspire his lyrics. His vibrant sound is a nostalgic nod back to the Old Skool era of hip hop, and has more substance and wordplay than modern day commercial rap. Like many artists, Fathomless 1 channelled the negativity from his difficult upbringing and used his voice as a form of escapism. Turning away from street battles and freestyles, he honed his skills on song constructing and arrangement and provided fans with real music they could relate to. He has a loyal following at live shows and has been an opening act for some of the industry’s finest including Lloyd, Chingy, Kanye West and most recently 112. He has also worked and supported some of the UK's biggest MC’s such as Giggs, Sway, Skinnyman, Genesis Elijah, DJ Tim Westwood and more. Fathomless 1 has featured on local,

national and worldwide radio, receiving rave reviews from listeners and DJ's alike. An active philanthropist, Fathomless stays truly grounded and is involved in numerous community music and children projects. He has also been a spokesperson for causes such as World Aids Day, Holocaust memorial and Black History Month.Vettie P. a leading US producer recently reached out to Fathomless 1 and signed him to ATG Records. “Fathomless 1 is an extremely talented MC. He is a lyricist who challenges the same old stuff. On top of it all he is an exquisite songwriter,” she says. The album 'Born Ready' is due out late 2010 and is promised to be breath of fresh air to the hip hop game. Fathomless is often likened by some industry people as the UK's answer to Common. Other comparisons made are with Dr Dre and Immortal Technique among others.

"Claudia Schiffer kissed me!" - Domenico Clores

This is the painfully handsome model Domenico Clores. We talk to the MK native about shooting for Pepsi, meeting Thierry Henry and getting a kiss from Claudia Schiffer!

Words by: Letitiah Obiri

Domenico (second from the left) alongside his MOT Model counterparts

Domenico starring in the Pepsi advert for the World Cup 06 with the lovely Claudia and Henry.

Domenico has that dark brooding Italian stallion look that could charm the knickers off any red blooded female. His playful grin and cheeky personality has made him a hit in the commercial modelling world and after over a decade in front of the camera the handsome Mr Clores remains as grounded and as modest as ever.He stumbled into modelling eleven years ago after a friend of his mother encouraged him and his siblings to attend a casting with the agency she was working at MOT Models, one of the leading agencies in the industry. Going along to the casting mainly to offer moral support to his younger siblings, Domenico soon found himself landing his first ever modelling job for the then popular Top of the Pops Magazine. Regular

work soon followed for the likes of Mizz, J17 and other leading teen magazines. With age and experience Domenico began to land major TV campaigns and assignments for clients including Nintendo and Peroni beer that took him to exotic locations across the globe including Greece, Italy, Romania and Columbia to name a few. During a career spanning so many years, Domenico has no difficulty describing the highlights and lowlights of his enviable job.“My greatest achievement to date was shooting an advert for Pepsi and meeting Theirry Henry and Claudia Schiffer,” says the model effortlessly, as if it’s something we all do in our day to day activities. This moment almost never happened for Clores, who was studying at university in Manchester when he was called last minute for the job.“I thought it wouldn’t be worth the hassle travelling all the way down to London for the day to attend a casting for such a high

Page 20: M>>Magazine

profile client that I probably wouldn’t get anyway,” Domenico says smiling at the memory.“When I arrived there were over 300 models all auditioning for the same spot, which confirmed my fears that I wouldn’t even get a look in.”Domenico did what he thought was a pretty bad audition but a few days later he received a call back to meet the CEO of Pepsi. He was eventually cast in a TV advert starring Henry and Schiffer which was screened during the 2006 World Cup in over six countries across the globe. So what was it like meeting the top celebrities?“Absolutely amazing! I actually got to be in the same scene as them and Henry was really cool and gave me some signed shirts, but the highlight was getting a cheeky peck on the cheek from the gorgeous Claudia Schiffer!”With such glamour and stardom, we can’t imagine their being any downsides to modelling but Domenico is quick to stress that’s its not all glitz.“The downsides of modelling are the ridiculously long hours,” he recalls. “During a TV campaign I was working all day sometimes from 6 am in the morning to 3 am the next morning then having only three hours sleep to be up again for 6am the next day.” Waiting around for what seemed like days at castings, are another one of Domenico’s pet peeves but he of course takes it all in his stride. What would the seasoned model then advise others wishing to follow in his footsteps?

“Learn to deal with rejection, because there’s plenty of it! You must remember not to take it personally, it isn’t an attack on your appearance, it just means the casting agents have a particular look in mind and you may not fit that look, no matter how beautiful or handsome you are. You have to be persistent, confident and very determined. Most importantly make sure you have a good agency and a better portfolio!”Far from halting his modelling career due to his studies, Domenico has plans to stay in the industry a while longer that is until his looks fades, he jokes.Currently he works in retail to provide a steady income and attends castings during the days. Plans for the future include dabbling in some acting work and furthering his modelling career. With a smouldering look that belongs in a D&G ad, we’re pretty sure Mr Clores will have enough work to last him a lifetime.
