GENERALGUIDELINES

ATTENDANCE,PRACTICEREQUIREMENTSANDPROGRESSREPORTSMMAwillcontacteachstudentatthebeginningofeachtermtoschedulelessons/sessions.Weacceptstudentsanytimeonarollingbasis.Nostudentmaychangeteachersexceptbetweenterms.Lessonswillconveneweeklyattheregularlyscheduledtime.ThosechoosingtoswitchlessontimesmaydosoforaChangeFeeof$25perschedulingchange(subjecttoteacheravailability).

Outofprofessionaldeferencetothoseonourwaitinglistandtomaintaintheexcellenceofourprogram,studentswillbedroppedforpoorattendance,aswellasinconsistentpracticeandpreparation.Attheendofeachterm,parentswillreceiveaprogressreportgivinganevaluationofthestudent'saptitude,ability,attitudeandprogress.TheSpringTermreportwillindicatewhethertheteacherconsidersitadvisableforthestudenttocontinuelessons.

EARLYWITHDRAWALNorefundswillbemadeforearlywithdrawal.

MISSEDLESSONSTheteacherisundernoobligationtomakeuplessonsmissedbythestudent.

Studentsareexpectedtonotifytheirinstructor24hoursinadvanceiftheymustmisslessonsorsessions.Studentswhoarerunningafever,coughing,sneezing,exhibitingcoldsymptoms,orhavemissedschoolthatdayduetoillnessshouldnotattendtheirlessononsite,butrather,attheirowndiscretion,mayopttotakethatlessononlineattheregularlyscheduledtimebylettingtheirinstructorknowinadvance.Outoffairnessandrespectforthefullschedulesofbothstudentsandourprofessionalteachingandperformancefaculty,lessonsmissedbystudentsareforfeited.

Lessonspostponedbytheteacherwillbemadeuportaughtbyasubstituteinstructorbeforetheendoftheterm.Ifateacherhasscheduledamake-uplesson,thetimehavingbeenagreeduponbythestudent(andparent),theteacherisundernoobligationtomakeupthislessonshouldthestudentbeabsent.

Therearenosummermake-uplessons.Reschedulingwillnottakeplacewithadvancednotice.

Studentsareexpectedtoarriveontimetolessons,performanceclassesorrecitalswiththepropermaterials.Anytimemissedduetotardinesswillbeforfeitedbythestudent.Lessonswillendontime.

PERFORMANCES(Seepage13formoredetails).Studentperformancesplayanimportantroleinthedevelopmentofagoodmusician.Manyofourstudentsparticipateinperformanceclasses,masterclasses,recitals,festivals,andcompetitions.RecitalsarescheduledoncertainweekdayeveningsandSaturdays.Consistentweeklypractice/progressandperformanceinourannualSpringRecitalareexpectedtoretainaplaceinourprogram.

Adulthobbyistsenrolledinourprogramwhoelectnottoperformpubliclywillhaveampleopportunitiestoinformallysharemusic,fellowshipandfoodatourmusicsocialeventsheldperiodicallyinprivatehomes.OurmusicsocialsareopentoallcurrentlyenrolledMMAadults.

INTERVIEWLESSONSAllnewstudentsmustschedulearequired30-minuteinterviewlessonforachargeof$34.Thisenablesthestudent(andparents)tomeettheteacher,seeourfacilities,anddetermineifourcourseofstudyisbestforyou.YoursessionwillbescheduledoncepaymentisreceivedviaourWebsite.

Parentsandguardiansarewelcometoattendanylessonwiththeirchild.Friends,siblings,andotherrelativesshouldmakeplanstowaitquietlyelsewhere.Pleasesilenceallcellphonesandelectronicdevices.OurlobbyhasfreeWi-Fiandcomfortableseatingforthosechoosingtowaitquietlyon-site.StudiosareavailableforourMMAsessionsonly—notforstudentpracticeorguestuse.Patronsshouldalsorefrainfromhandlingormovingfurniture,instruments,musicequipment,thepersonalbelongingsofourstaff,orinstructionalmaterials.

4. Aparentorguardianmustaccompanystudentsundertheageof12toandfromthestudioforhis/herlesson.Childrenaretoremainwiththeirparentorguardianuntilthechildiswiththeinstructorfortheirlesson.Childrenaretobedroppedoffandpickedupinatimelymanner.MajestyMusicAcademyisnotliableforstudentsbeforeoraftertheirlessontime.Nochildmaybeleftunattendedonourpremises.

5. ParkingisavailableinfrontofourbuildingalongWadeHampton.Pleaseavoidparkingintheveterinarylotadjacenttoourpropertyoracrossthestreet.Thoseparkingoff-sitearesubjecttotowingattheowner’sexpense.

6. Sessionswillbeginandendontime,regardlessofthetimestudentsarrive.Anytimemissedduetostudenttardinessisforfeitedbythestudent.Arrivingontimeavoidsencroachingonotherstudents’lessontimesandshowsrespectfortheinstructor.Allstudentsdeservethefullbenefitoftheirindividuallessontimes.Professionalcourtesydictatesthatstudentsnotifytheirinstructoriftheyarerunninglateorlethim/herknowinadvancewhenplanningtomissasession.Studentsarrivinghabituallylatewillforfeittheirlessontimeinourschedulewithoutrefund.

7. Parentalinvolvementisvitaltothesuccessofpre-collegestudents.Studentswhoconsistentlyengageinqualitypracticetimemakethebestprogress.Parentsareencouragedtomonitorthepracticetimeoftheirchildren(see“Practice&Performance”below).Ourstudentsareexpectedtopracticedaily,MondaythroughSaturday,accordingtotherecommendationsoftheinstructor.MajestyMusicAcademyreservestherighttoterminatelessonsforthoseshowingaconsistentlackofcommitment.

8. Studentsareexpectedtobringallinstructionalmaterials—includingscores,books,assignmentnotebook,handouts,pencil,metronome/tuner,(andinstrumentforinstrumentalists)—eachweektolessonintheirMajestytote.Weeklyprogressasaresultofconsistentpractice,curiosity,commitmenttolessonsandperformances,andintentionalfocusisourMMAnorm.ItisdifficulttohaveaproductivelessonwhenstudentsfailtobringALLoftheirmaterials.

9. Studentsaretoaddresstheirinstructorrespectfullybyhis/herprofessionaltitle,suchas“Dr.,”“Miss,”“Mrs.,”or“Mr.”Sessionetiquetteofourhighlyqualifiedfacultyisprofessionallycongenial,expectant,andfullofdiscovery.Weexpectnolessofourstudents.MMAreservestherighttocancelanysessionwithoutrefundshouldastudentexhibitillmannersormisbehavior.

10. Teachersareundernoobligationtomakeuplessonsmissedbythestudent.Reschedulingwillnottakeplacewithadvancednotice.Outoffairnessandrespectforthefullschedulesofbothstudentsandourprofessionalteachingandperformancefaculty,lessonsmissedbystudentsareforfeited.Alltuitionandfeesarenon-refundable.Norefundswillbegivenforearlywithdrawal.Lessonspostponedbyinstructorswillberescheduledortaughtbyasubstituteinstructor

beforetheendoftheterm.Ifateacherhasscheduledamake-uplesson,thetimehavingbeenagreeduponbythestudent(andparent),theteacherisundernoobligationtomakeupthislessonshouldthestudentbeabsent.

PRACTICE&PERFORMANCE

PRACTICING101Practicingdailycanbeoneofthemostjoyful,creative,freeing,andrewardingofactivities.Followtherecommendationsofyourinstructor.Yourteacherwillgivespecificsforeachfacetofyourassignment(theory,musicianship,technique,repertoire,etc.).Establishinggoodself-disciplinehabitsfrompracticingefficientlyputsoneontheroadtosuccess,bothinmusicandlife.Followingareafewproventechniques:

1. Goodpracticehabitsincludedisciplined,dailystudyatthesametimeeveryday.Generally,thebetteryoupractice,thebetteryouwillbecome.

2. Thelengthofdailypracticeforbeginnersshouldbeequaltotheweeklylessonlength.3. Yourpracticespaceisahaven.Itshouldbeclean,quiet,freeofdistractions(silencepeople,

pets,andelectronicdevices),andwelllit.Keepyourinstrumenttunedandmaintained:tuneyourpianoeverysixmonths.

4. Thinkqualityoverquantity.Ifyoufindyou’reunabletoconcentrate,takeashortbreak.5. Focus.Think.Prepare.Play.6. Practiceslowlyforaccuracy.7. Listenforbeautyofsound:thegestureisthesound.8. Thoughtfulrepetitionfocusingonaccuracyandeaseofmotionwillstrengthenyourmuscle

memory.9. Reviewyourteacher’snoteseveryday,bothintheassignmentbookandinyourmusicscore.

MajestyMusicAcademysetsstudentsupforsuccess,bothinmusicandlife.Wepromoteanatmosphereofpositive,opencommunicationamongourstudents,parents,andfaculty.Youngerstudentswillneedsupervisionduringlessonsandpractice.Pleaseprovidemusicbooks,aworkingmetronome(manyappssuchasTempoforiPhoneareavailable),andothermaterials,asrequested.Checkyourtextsande-mailregularlyforMMAmessages.Developagoodrelationshipwiththeteacher,communicatingopenlyandfrequently.Providequalitylisteningmusicforyourchildtohelpthemdevelopabroadbackgroundandknowledgeofclassicalmusic.

Perfectpracticemakesperfect.Accuracyiskey.Watchforcorrectposture,handposition,fingering,supplewrists/shoulders,etc.Followtheinstructor’swrittenweeklyassignmentgoals.
