Wanted - URGENTLY!!!

Cub Scout Leader / Assistant Beaver Scout Leaders (2) We are 220th Birmingham Scout Group and are looking for three interested and committed people to join our team of volunteer leaders. Based in Moseley, 220th Birmingham has been encouraging, challenging, nurturing and supporting young people aged between 6 & 14 for many years. Through scouting, we provide a diverse range of activities which develop life skills within our members. The Cub Pack is for young people aged between 8 and 10 ½ years old and meets on Monday evenings for 1 ¼ hours. The Cub Scout Leader is required to work with the assistant leaders to deliver a programme of activities based on scouting challenges and badge requirements. Alongside traditional scouting skills are badges covering aspects of physical development, creativity, faith, science and general interest work some of which may have a community or global focus. The Beaver Colony is for young people aged between 6 and 8 years old and meets on Friday evening for 1 ¼ hours. The Assistant Leaders work with the Beaver Scout Leader to ensure Beavers get a great introduction to scouting doing many of the activities and capturing the enthusiasm that the older groups enjoy. Energy and a commitment to developing young people are key components of this role and would suit anyone aged 18 or over. Volunteering with scouts is not just about the outdoors, but it is about adventure, fun and giving something back to the community. Full support for all of these roles will be provided by the Group Scout Leader, Executive Committee and wider leadership team. If you are interested in making a difference in the life of the group and the lives of local young people, or if you know someone who would be interested in joining us, please contact the chair of the executive committee on 07813 700923.

Search for a Star

Local actress Kathryn Rooney is supporting The Theatre Workshop in its Birmingham launch promotion to Search for a Star. This is your child’s chance to win one of two free scholarship places at this prestigious stage school.

The Theatre Workshop is now inviting the best of local talent between ages 6-18yrs to audition for a special ‘Kathryn Rooney’ scholarship to train at The Theatre Workshop till Easter 2014.

Drama training is a proven way of helping young children improve their confidence and ability to speak in front of an audience. A skill that is empowering whatever path their adult lives take.

The Theatre Workshop offers development of these basic life-skills at the same time as offering children a real chance to make it in the industry. The Theatre Workshop is aligned to an agency that has taken many of their children out of the classroom, onto the stage and in front of TV cameras. They also conduct Lamda drama assessments as part of the course.

The Theatre Workshop, established in Sussex for ten years has already launched the careers of notable young

performers including Oscar Lloyd, star of Emmerdale and the 4’O’Clock Club, Hetti Bywater who is currently playing Lucy Beale in Eastenders and Brennock O’Conner and Sam Hickman who are both currently doing a UK Tour of Oliver playing the role of Dodger.

Now The Theatre Workshop is coming to Birmingham, launching in April with a Saturday Morning class from 10am – 1pm at The Priory School, Edgbaston. If your child would like to get involved without going through the audition process then they can simply go along to the first session in May completely free of charge to see what it’s like. Places are limited so do make sure you get your name on the list. For contact details see below.

Page 11: MM MarApr 2013

Kathryn is offering two talented local youngsters the chance of a lifetime to train at the top stage school and be taught by West End Stars of Hairspray and Legally Blonde. Not only are two scholarships on offer, the lucky students will also gain professional representation from The Theatre Workshop’s agency.

Kathryn Rooney, a local girl originally from Solihull, who has just finished in the Birmingham Pantomime of Robinson Crusoe, took a break from her busy schedule to say “This is a great chance for up and coming talent to secure the best training on offer for free! I look forward to meeting the winners in the near future”.

Theatre Workshop Director Lora Munro also from Birmingham said: “We want to find the stars of tomorrow and give two young people the chance to fulfil their dreams and receive the best training on offer in the area”.

Auditions will be held in late April 2013. Places to audition will be limited so please contact The Theatre Workshop as soon as possible.

Sold subject to contractMoving house is often one of the most exciting times in our life – and at the same time it is right up there as one of the most stressful too.

In the second of our ‘meet the team at Tyndallwoods’ series we meet Chris Beddow, Solicitor, who specialises in conveyancing and helps people complete their sale and purchase as smoothly as possible.

Most people do not move house very often, so when they do the process is usually new to them or at most a distant memory. Also there are elements which are slightly out of their control, with maybe four, five or six people in the chain all with different agendas.

Some people want to move quickly, others want to take their time, and some people have children moving schools so want to tie in with school holidays.

And this is where it really makes a difference having a conscientious, understanding solicitor on your side. Chris at Tyndallwoods takes the time to get to know his clients, understand what they expect, help them understand the procedure and what they need to do.

When people go to see Chris they generally have found a house and agreed a sale. And he guides them through the process which usually takes from six to

ten weeks. Not every sale or purchase is without its pitfalls though and Chris is on hand to help guide people through any issue which may arise, be it right of way, apartment management, or environmental.

You want someone on your side who you can trust and rely on when undertaking something as big as the sale and purchase of your home, someone local with a good reputation. And that is where Chris and his team come in.

For more information or to make an appointment you can call Chris on 0121 693 2222

Did you miss your last dental appointment?

We are all looking at ways to tighten our belts right now but delaying dental care and treatment can lead to higher costs in the long term. Local family dentist Dr Parmar of Acorn Implant & Dental Practice (AIDP) gives us some advice about the importance of regular check-ups.

Tooth Decay

It is important to be aware that dental decay and tooth wear are not always visible to the naked eye. The outside part of the tooth is really hard so the decay eats the centre much more quickly and the hole inside can become so big that the enamel finally collapses into it. This is why it is important to have regular x-rays as well as dental check ups to find these cavities before they become too big to fill.

Gum Disease

Untreated gum disease may lead to mobile teeth and eventually loss of teeth. The damage caused by late gum disease is irreversible.

Gum disease starts with just inflammation of the gums. If you have bleeding gums when you clean your teeth or have redness, soreness or bad breath then these can be the tell tale signs. It can be treated and prevented with regular visits to the hygienist, flossing and cleaning.

Page 17: MM MarApr 2013

17

Teeth Grinding

Some people grind or clench their teeth in their sleep. As well as damage to their teeth this may cause headaches and jaw ache. Appliances can be made to alleviate this problem.

Illness

A dentist is not just looking at your teeth; they also look at your tongue and cheeks for signs of oral cancer. Other diseases present in the body can be identifiable in the mouth, such as thrush, anaemia and diseases of the skin.

Children

It is important to bring children to the dentist as early as possible so they become accustomed to the environment and the faces at the practice. Most importantly your dentist can give early preventative advice in terms of diet and tooth brushing so children should never need any dental work.

As permanent teeth come through you may find they are irregular or crowded and regular check ups allow your dentist to monitor this and make a referral to an orthodontist if required.

The Elderly

We are all living longer and taking better care of our teeth, so the need for full dentures is now quite rare. Also there has been a major transition in dentistry with dentists moving from simply removing teeth to working with patients to restore and treat teeth. This means regular visits to the hygienist to keep gum disease at bay.

Fluoride treatments are also used to strengthen people’s teeth, particularly where gums have receded (a natural process as we get older) revealing the

root of the tooth which does not have the protective enamel coating.

Many people are wearing dentures that they hate. They have to take them out to clean them, they may move when people talk or drop out and cause embarrassment. Dental implants are a really good way to get rid of dentures.

About Acorn Implant & Dental Practice

Acorn Implant & Dental Practice still has places for NHS patients as well as providing a full range of advanced and cosmetic dental care.

This family run practice has three dentists, two of whom are brothers, with another brother as a dental technician and Dr Parmar’s wife as the practice manager. There are also two hygienists and a whole team of compassionate and caring nurses.

The practice offers a relaxed and efficient atmosphere with no hustle and bustle. It is located in the heart of the community with its own car park and on-street parking if needed.

It is open from 9am-5pm weekdays and 9am-1pm Saturday. Evening appointments are available for more complex work and private patients.

It's not what you know, it's who you knowThere is no stronger form of advertising than word of mouth and that is the secret to the incredible success of local business and professional networking group Moseley BNI.

In a year the group passes more than a million pounds worth of business between its 20 members, and is now looking for more members to boost this success even further.

All that is required is a little time commitment and the rewards are there to be reaped. The group meets for a weekly breakfast meeting at Moseley Golf Club, where you can expect a delicious cooked breakfast, a jovial atmosphere, and an average of £19,000 worth of business being passed around each week.

After breakfast, the meetings follow a simple formula:

1. Each member makes their ’60 second pitch’ to say who they are and the kind of referrals they are looking for.

2. A contribution round sees the passing over of completed referral slips, with details of hot leads to be followed up.

3. The ‘Thank you for the business’ box goes round for people to pop their cards in with details of business done.

A key philosophy of the group is ‘givers gain’ meaning, the more you give the more you get back.

If you would like to go along as a visitor you can see what its like and meet a group of like-minded businessmen and women who are geared up to generate business for you and act as your own personal ‘sales force’. There is no obligation to join but you will find it hard not to.

A hidden gem

Hidden in the middle of Moseley is an oasis. Around 250 allotment gardens enthusiastically nurtured by plot holders. What a gem we have right on our doorstep!

Moor Green allotments began life as Leisure Gardens in 1977, but gradually, as the demographic and usage has demanded, the site has evolved and is now one of the most diverse allotments associations in the City.

The revival of organic gardening and the need for greater self sufficiency has resulted in a huge increase in demand. Moor Green has responded by encouraging inexperienced plot holders to take on half plots. Thoughtfully planned this can yield a good supply of fruit and vegetables throughout the year. Plot to plate is not only healthier, but gets you out in the fresh air and provides regular exercise.

Moor Green is also fortunate to have a thriving Pavilion and licenced bar. What

could be better after a warm day working the plot than to drop into the Pavilion, have a drink and discuss gardening and other matters with kindred spirits? The highlight of the year has to be the Annual Fruit and Vegetable Show around August Bank holiday when we celebrate and reward the ‘fruits’ of our hard work.

He's behind you!

If you fancy a bit of amateur dramatics in your life – from set and costume design to serious acting then now’s your chance.

Drama 13, a well established Moseley and Kings Heath based amateur dramatics group is looking for new members.

Drama 13 started in the early 1970s when the original Moseley CofE School building became the St Mary’s Youth and Community Centre, later named Centre 13. The vicar of St Mary’s Church asked members of the existing St Mary’s Amateur Dramatic Society and others to form a new Drama Group. A ‘mini-theatre’ was created and the group was renamed Drama 13.

After Centre 13 closed in 2003, Drama 13 found a new home at the New Life Baptist Church in Kings Heath, which has a large hall with a stage. The group has since provided stage curtains and lighting, as well as window blinds to allow daylight performances.

Drama 13 entertains the public with typically a play and a pantomime each

year together with fun fund-raising social activities. The group writes and produces Murder Mystery Evenings, with three planned in 2013. Drama 13 has also entered the annual Birmingham Drama Festival FAME with good results. This year’s pantomime will be ‘Cinderella’, following last year’s highly successful ‘Dennis and the Donkey’.

There are opportunities from set design and construction to serious acting, and people have ‘learnt their trade’ in this friendly group. New members of any age are always welcome.

If interested, you can phone the secretary Pat Franchi on 0121 244 2709, or simply go along to the Church Hall (opposite Asda Supermarket) where they meet on Tuesday evenings at 7.45pm. Don’t miss the chance to get involved before they start recruiting for the December Pantomime!

Why I love Moseley

My Moseley magazine recently ran a writing competition with local school children from Moseley CofE Primary school to discover what they find special about our beloved bit of Birmingham.

The competition was run as part of ‘Heritage Week’ a week of activities organised by Year 1 teacher Mr Down to give the children a broader understanding of their own heritage, with an emphasis on both local and family history.

As part of this initiative Chris Sutton from Moseley History Society spent time with the children showing them photographs of Moseley then and now and taking them around the village and to the ice house in Moseley Park and the World War II bunker underneath the Post Office.

It was very difficult to choose a winner out of such wonderful entries from the children aged 5 to 10. But after much deliberation we chose the following and you will see why.

Daisy Mae Thompson, reception, age 5

I love the private parkI don’t like to leave when the sun’s shiningIt is my secret playground

Moseley – what can I say about it?

I will say because I believe it that my heart is already lit.

From the wonders and surprises of dear old Moseley,

and I’m sure your heart will light up too, hopefully soon you’ll see!

The place that I’m focusing on is Moseley CofE School,

If you don’t realise how lovely it is you really must be a fool!

Its kind and friendly atmosphere makes you jump for joy,

Everyone gets good education – girls and not forgetting boys!

What I’m trying to make you see

Is how brilliant Moseley CofE can always be.

You can unlock the door to our super school

Because we will give you the key!

Lauren Webb, year 5, age 9

As I stride down the bustling high street I look about my surroundings. They are the small village shops crowded with customers, and opposite, ancient St Mary’s Church still stands tall. Strolling onwards the farmers’ market comes into view. Dreaming of delicious melted chocolate dribbled over marshmallows and strawberries I hurry onwards.

After receiving my marshmallows and chocolate, I imagine my home 100 years back. The Fighting Cocks and the Bulls Head still at the height of popularity. Horse drawn carriages and penny

farthings steadily moving up cobbled streets, some of which is still left today.

But for me the best of Moseley is the wonder and mystery of Moseley Bog. Not only the muddy stream that trickles through makes it special, the fresh air and well-built dens add to its popularity. For me though, it is the imagination and sheer joy that inspired JRR Tolkien to write The Hobbit.

Elspeth Hall, year 5, age 9

In Moseley Park there is a big log. Most children use it as a spaceship and one of those children is me. There is also a lake where people usually think about things and look at the elegant swans swimming across the lake. There is an ice house where people used to keep food cold in the summer. People play tennis there with their mates and table tennis in the hut.

The last time I went to Moseley Park was when the Folk Festival was on. At the Folk Festival I played with my friends. I went on rides. I read a book in the golden sunshine and painted a key ring. I had a wonderful time.

People would love to go to Moseley Park. It is a really fun place and it is a peaceful place to go and a good place for picnics. Everyone should love Moseley Park.

“A big thank you to all the children who entered, we would have loved to include them all because they were so good. But a special well done goes to Elspeth, Lauren, Eve and Daisy Mae” said My Moseley Editor Amy Watson.

Spring is here, hooray!

Green shoots are starting to appear everywhere and that means Moseley in Bloom is going into a phase of high activity to make Moseley cleaner and greener.

After their success last year, winning Gold for the fifth time in the Heart of England in Bloom and for the sixth time being designated Best in the Urban Communities category, they will be aiming high again this year.

The theme is Edible Gardening and they will be looking for sites to plant their seeds.

West Midlands Police have funded an anti-litter campaign which will involve the schools and other community groups.

Watch out for a photographic competition focusing on Rubbish, with an exhibition in July at Moseley Exchange.

The work in the Car Park continues. It is a constant challenge to keep it clean and free from anti-social behavior but this has reduced since Moseley in Bloom volunteers started their work two years

ago. The side bed will be developed as a wild flower garden and there may be some edibles in the top bed.

Moseley in Bloom likes to involve Moseley residents and workers as much as possible and intend to campaign to discourage hard surfaces in front gardens.

Last year’s heavy rain demonstrated the relevance of keeping gardens ‘soft’ and planted to prevent water run-off to the drains.

Finally, in a small but subversive way, Moseley in Bloom want to encourage some guerrilla gardening. If there is a tree base near your house that would be enhanced by a few flowers, why not plant them? It can show that you care!
