PHILADELPHIA UNION vs. REAL SALT LAKE PPL PARK, Chester, Pa. 4 p.m. ET (WPVI-abc6; KMYU 2.2) June 11, 2011 (WEEK 13; MLS Game 121)

A high-profile intraconference matchup is ahead as the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Union play host to Real Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon at PPL Park. Union return home after extended their unbeaten streak to three games with a 1-1 draw at defending MLS Cup champion Colorado last weekend. RSL kicked off its two-game Eastern swing with a 2-1 loss at Columbus at midweek. REFEREE: Jorge Gonzalez. In Union’s inaugural season a year ago, Real claimed a 3-0 win at Rio Tinto Stadium in May, and the teams played to a 1-1 draw at PPL Park in August.

The teams were originally scheduled to play April 23 at Rio Tinto Stadium, but the game was moved to September in consideration of Real Salt Lake’s participation in the CONCACAF Champions League final.

Coaches record: Peter Nowak vs. RSL: P6 W2 L2 D2 … Jason Kreis v PHI: P2 W1 L0 D1 PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union stretched their unbeaten streak to three games, playing to a 1-1 draw Saturday with the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Union have 21 points from 12 matches on the year, leading the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH

Both goals came in a four-minute span midway through the second half. After Colorado's Pablo Mastroeni was taken down by Union defender Danny Califf in the box, Conor Casey converted from the spot, wrong-footing goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón with a deft lob.

But in the 66th minute, Danny Mwanga pulled the visitors level, taking a shot from just outside the edge of the area that Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens couldn't keep out of the goal despite getting his hands to the ball.

Union manager Peter Nowak made one change to the team that defeated Toronto FC 6-2 at BMO Field. Jack McInerney came into the side for Danny Mwanga.

PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-4-2): Faryd Mondragon - Sheanon Williams, Carlos Valdes, Danny Califf, Jordan Harvey - Justin Mapp (Keon Daniel 25 / Stefani Miglioranzi 79), Kyle Nakazawa, Brian Carroll, Gabriel Farfan - Sebastien Le Toux, Jack McInerney (Danny Mwanga 59).

TEAM NEWS After losing three consecutive games on the road, Union have now taken points from back-to-back away

matches. They are also one of three teams still unbeaten at home (along with LA Galaxy and the Columbus Crew), among teams that had played at home to start the week.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“We created chances to win the game, so it’s good to get the point. I’m a little disappointed not to get three, but I think for us coming here, knowing how difficult it’s going to be, I think it’s a good motivation for next week,” Nowak said. “We’re playing another MLS Cup champion, Salt Lake, and it’s going to be a really tough game."

Danny Mwanga has scored the last three goals for Union, over a span of 84 minutes. Mwanga scored the final two goals in the 6-2 win at Toronto, then the equalizing goal for the 1-1 draw in Colorado. He has scored in back-to-back games for the first time as a professional.

“When you get drafted No. 1, people expect you to come in and help right away,” said Mwanga. “Being able to do it late last season, and this year, I started kind of slow but things are coming together. It’s a great feeling, but at the same times works as motivation and pushes me to work even harder.”

With Carlos Ruiz away on national team duty with Guatemala for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Jack McInerney was given his first start of the year, partnering Mwanga in attack. He had made five substitute appearances.

“I thought Jack had a productive, efficient start,” Union assistant coach John Hackworth said. “Although he didn’t score – and everyone looks at that as a measuring stick as to strikers having a good game – he actually played pretty well. He did the things we were asking him about.”

Ruiz has missed the last two games – the first two games of the season where he has not played for Philadelphia – and in those contests, Mwanga has three goals and Sébastien Le Toux three assists.

“It was a great combination between me and Sébastien,” Mwanga said. “He played me the ball and then made a really nice run behind the defense, so I think they were caught in a position where they should stay with me or follow Sébastien. But they kind of chose to go with Sébastien and that gave me time to take a shot on goal.”

For a third consecutive game – from which they gotten a result from each – Union responded to a goal allowed with one of their own within a 10-minute span.

“That’s our team in a nutshell,” said defender Jordan Harvey. “We were playing well, I thought we were getting some chances in the start of the second half, and I knew it was going to come eventually.

REAL SALT LAKE Real Salt Lake started a two-game Eastern trip with a second loss in three games, falling 2-1 to the Columbus Crew on Wednesday night at Crew Stadium. RSL sits in fourth place in the Western Conference, with 20 points from 11 matches. LAST MATCH

Real took the lead in the seventh minute. Nelson González flighted in a corner kick from the right and Jámison Olave shook off his marker to bounce the ball off the turf and high into the goal.

The Crew began their fightback in the 76th minute when Andrés Mendoza converted a penalty kick after Justin Meram was tripped by Olave in the box.

Then in the 82nd minute, Josh Gardner score the eventual game-winner when his shot from 22 yards out hit the left thigh of RSL defender Chris Schuler then ricocheted past goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

RSL coach Jason Kreis made one change to the side that defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-0 at at Rio Tinto Stadium. Jamison Olave returned from suspension in place of Nat Borchers in central defense.

REAL SALT LAKE (4-3-1-2): Nick Rimando - Tony Beltran, Chris Schuler, Jamison Olave, Chris Wingert - Ned Grabavoy, Kyle Beckerman, Nelson Gonzalez (Luis Gil 59) - Collen Warner (Andy Williams 66) - Jean Alexandre (Robbie Russell 80), Fabian Espindola.

TEAM NEWS After allowing just two goals in the first eight league games on the season, Real have now allowed two goals in

two of their last three games. “Apart from the first 15 minutes, we didn’t manage the game very well,” RSL coach Jason Kreis said. “Tactically,

we didn’t stay compact enough. We lost the ball in really, really bad positions. When you do that, it causes you to defend for long stretches. I thought Columbus was really unfortunate not to score in the first half, and because of that, it really affected the energy we were able to play the game with in the second half.”

The defeat in Columbus marked the first time they had allowed two goals after the 75-minute mark since the LA Galaxy came back for a 2-2 draw, May 6, 2009 – a span of 63 league games.

"When our guys are really, really committed — not just saying it but doing everything they can for each other — they don't allow chances and we certainly don't allow two goals," Kreis said.

Kreis maintained the same group in his front two lines against Columbus that played in the win against Vancouver, giving Collen Warner a third start in the attacking midfield role that would usually have been manned by Javier Morales.

"Collen Warner, in particular, we get at a lot to try and make defensive plays. We know how gifted he can be with the ball, and we need him to make defensive plays as well, and he got on the end of quite a few tackles," said Kreis.

Jamison Olave scored his ninth goal in MLS – but it was his first away from home. Nelson Gonzalez, making his second consecutive start, contributed his second career assist.

“Typically over the past couple of years the team has been very good on attacking set pieces. We have guys who are a little dangerous. It was a great service in and a great finish by Olave,” Kreis said.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Temperature at game time in Columbus was 87 degrees, and with a heat wave gripping the Eastern half of the USA and an afternoon start following a quick turnaround, Real will face a test on Saturday.

“We’re going to need to regroup pretty quickly," Kreis said. "We’ve got to regenerate. We’ve got guys in the ice bath right now, and we’ll take care of them over the next couple of days, because that 4 o’clock kickoff on Saturday is going to be a huge challenge."

Philadelphia Union vs. Real Salt Lake – Saturday, June 11, 2011 – 4:00 p.m. ET

HOME COOKING

Philadelphia Union return home to take on Real Salt Lake for the first time this season. Philadelphia have not played a match at home in three weeks since a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire on May 21.

Real Salt Lake have posted 20 points in 10 matches this season with a 6-2-2 record heading into Wednesday’s contest with Columbus. Salt Lake are 2-1-1 on the road this year and have points in four of five overall. Colorado are 2-0-1 against Eastern Conference as of Monday. Philadelphia are coming off a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Colorado Rapids on Saturday, earning points in two consecutive road matches for the first time in team history. The Union have points in all six home matches this year (4-0-2) and points in four of five overall (2-1-2).

LAST MLS MATCH

Philadelphia Union maintained sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference playing to a 1-1 draw against the defending MLS Champion Colorado Rapids on Saturday. Philadelphia opened the match with a flurry, building off the momentum generated in the previous week’s 6-2 drubbing of Toronto FC. Kyle Nakazawa, Jack McInerney, and Sebastien Le Toux had early opportunities to open the scoring only to be thwarted by Colorado keeper Matt Pickens. Faryd Mondragon was tested in the 22nd minute as he was forced to make a diving save off an Andre Akpan’s attempt to keep and the match went scoreless into the half. But in the 63rd minute, Danny Califf took down Pablo Mastroeni in the area and Connor Casey chipped the penalty down the center as Mondragon went to his right. The lead was short-lived for the Rapids as just three minutes later, Danny Mwanga scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season on a curling drive from the top of the box off the fingertips of Pickens. On the goal, Le Toux recorded his fourth assist of the season and third in the last two games. Mwanga had a change to end the match in the 90th minute but his bid was blocked at the top of the box as the match ended in a draw.

LAST MATCH vs. SALT LAKE

The last time Philadelphia played Real Salt Lake, the Union avenged a 3-1 loss by recording a draw on an early Danny Mwanga goal at PPL Park. Entering the contest on a three game winning streak, Philadelphia opened the scoring in the eighth minute as Sebastien Le Toux gathered the ball with his back to goal and flicked it with the outside of his right to a charging Mwanga. Mwanga took three touches before burying a shot into the lower left corner. But Salt Lake equalized just nine minutes later when Fabian Espindola capitalized on a mistake by Juan Diego Gonzalez in the back third. Gonzalez fell down and misplayed a cross, leaving Espindola to recover the ball and beat Philadelphia keeper Chris Seitz from the edge of the six-yard box. Philadelphia dominated the second half but couldn’t find the winner. The Union took 10 corners to three for Real Salt Lake but was also called offside eight times.

Philadelphia Union vs. Real Salt Lake – Saturday, June 11, 2011– 4:00 p.m. ET

EXTREME MAKEOVER: PPL PARK EDITION

Union officials are developing a three-phase PPL Park

expansion plan to dramatically increase the year-old

stadium’s seating capacity.

The first phase of the process is expected to increase

seating from the current 18,500 to 20,000 with construction

potentially beginning as early as 2014, according to team

Chief Executive Nick Sakiewicz.

The second phase of the project would bring seating to

27,000 and the third to about 30,000. The total project

would represent a 62% increase in capacity

As an expansion club, Philadelphia ranked fourth in

the League in attendance, averaging 19,254 fans per game,

with the first two games played at Lincoln Financial Field.

This season, Philadelphia rank sixth in the League

drawing 18,101 fans per game. As a percentage of stadium

capacity, the Union rank third in MLS, selling 97.8 percent

of seats, well above the league average of 75.4 percent.

The proposed expansion of PPL Park would cost an

estimated 25 million dollars.

CLEAN SHEETS

In nine games on May 28 and 29, MLS teams combined to score 35 goals for an average of 3.89 goals per game, a dramatic increase in scoring from the 2.33 goals per game average entering that weekend. Last weekend was a different story, as only 11 total goals were scored in the nine matches June 3 and 4. Three of the matches were 0-0 shutouts and there were no more than two goals scored in any of the contests. Saturday should be a defensive battle between Philly and Salt Lake. Only six teams in MLS have scored fewer goals this season than Philadelphia (which have 15 goals), but Real Salt Lake are one of those teams. Salt Lake average 1.2 goals per game while Philadelphia have 1.25.

GOLDEN RUIZ

Union forward Carlos Ruiz played well for Guatemala in

his nation’s opening match of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup on

Monday, going the full 90 minutes in a scoreless draw with

Honduras. Ruiz fired two shots and drew three fouls throughout

the match. Holding Honduras without a goal was no small task for

Guatemala as the side played two men down for 12 minutes when

two of Ruiz’s teammates were sent off during the match. Ruiz and

La Furia Azul (the Blue Fury) will next be in action on June 10

when they face off against Jamaica and June 13 against Grenada.

American nation of Colombia, as RSL’s Jamison Olave meets up with

Philadelphia’s Faryd Mondragon, Juan Diego Gonzalez, Roger

Torres and Carlos Valdes. Union goalkeeper Mondragon has made 50

total appearances for his country in international play.

Fire won the Supporter’s Shield (2003) and were runners-up in the

US Open Cup competition (2004).

Three players between the two teams have a strong UCLA

connection. RSL’s Tony Beltran and the Union’s Kyle Nakazawa were

teammates for the 2006 and 2007 seasons while Philadelphia’s Amobi

Okugo played for the Bruins just two years later in 2009.

DELCO RETURN

Salt Lake Defender Chris Wingert may be a New

York native, but he still has strong ties to the Philly area.

Wingert helped club team FC Delco win the 2001 U-19

Snickers US Youth Soccer National Championship. In the

final, Wingert scored the game-winner. Wingert’s father

Norm played goalkeeper for the Philadelphia atoms of the

North American Soccer League between 1973 and 1975,

appearing in 11 games for the team.

OOOOOOHHHH DANNY MWANGA

With three goals in his last four games, Danny

Mwanga has passed Carlos Ruiz to become the team leader in

goals. Though Mwanga’s two marks at Toronto FC were the

fifth and sixth goals in a blowout, his first and fourth goals

this season were both second-half game-tying goals.

As a rookie in 2010, Mwanga, a finalist for MLS

rookie of the year, scored seven goals in 24 appearances and

has now recorded 11 goals in 35 appearances on his career.

Mwanga has scored the last three Philadelphia Union

goals and his strike at Colorado last Saturday was nominated

for MLS goal of the week.

PPL PARK WINS STADIUM SECURITY AWARD

PPL Park has recently won the first-annual NCS4 Facility Achievement Award, an honor given by the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security.

The Facility Achievement Award was created to honor a venue ―based on an innovative approach to enhancing safety and security beyond their normal operations or addressing significant concern.‖

PPL Park has also won awards from Mid-Atlantic Construction Magazine for ―Best Sports/Recreation Project of the Year‖ and the Delaware County Planning Commission’s Bates Memorial Award for ―outstanding land projects in the County.‖

―PPL Park demonstrated exemplary work developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to visiting supporters that included proactive communication with support groups, designated parking and ticketing, specialized staffing, coordination with contract security and public law enforcement, use of CCTV and other key assets,‖ said Evan Dabby, the

Senior Operations Director for Major League Soccer.

The Facility Achievement Award will be presented at the NCS4 annual conference in New Orleans in August.

LONG DISTANCE

Philadelphia Union are scoring very proficiently from long range this season, leading Major League Soccer with six goals—40 percent of their 2011 total—from outside the 18-yard box.

EFFICIENCY, THY NAME IS MWANGA

Not only has Danny Mwanga scored the Union’s last three goals, the young forward has been incredibly efficient in doing so. In 611 minutes of play this season, Mwanga has scored four goals for an average of 0.59 goals every 90 minutes. This ranks him tenth in Major League Soccer, just 0.02 behind New York’s Thierry Henry.

STAYING IN LINE

The Union have been very wise in timing their

forward runs during the 2011 season, having accumulated

only 26 offsides calls, which is higher than only four clubs.

STAR-STUDDED UNION

Six players on the Philadelphia Union have been added to the 2011 MLS All-Star ballot: Sebastien Le Toux, Danny Mwanga, Carlos Ruiz, Faryd Mondragón, Danny Califf and Justin Mapp. Fans can vote by going to PhiladelphiaUnion.com or the League’s main website, MLSSoccer.com. Online voting is available from June 8–July 5 and special Twitter voting is available from June 17-20. Twitter voting can be done one of two ways: typing a MLS player’s Twitter handle (i.e. @FarydMondragon) OR a player’s full name with no space between first and last (i.e. dannymwanga). Regardless of method chosen, the tweet must contain @MLS AND #MLSAllStar. Limit one vote per tweet.

UNION JUNIORS, YSC HOST PASSBACK DAY

Philadelphia Union and YSC Sports, the club’s official youth development partner, will host the first annual YSC/Philadelphia Union Juniors ―Passback Day‖ on Sunday, June 12 from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. EST at YSC Sports in Wayne, Pa.

PROBABLE STARTERS 6/11 @ PHILADELPHIA

RSL (4-4-2 diamond, R L): GK: Rimando

DF: Beltran, Olave, Borchers, Wingert; MF: Beckerman; Grabavoy, Gonzalez, Warner;

FW: Espíndola, Alexandre

EASTERN ROAD SWING CONTINUES: Real Salt

Lake arrives in Philadelphia‟s PPL Park licking wounds from Wednesday‟s 1-2 loss at Columbus, a game in which RSL took a 1-0 lead in the 7

th minute but allowed two Crew

goals in the final 15 minutes to suffer its second loss in its last three contests … DF Jamison Olave struck home a corner kick to the far side of the box from MF Nelson Gonzalez to give Jason Kreis‟ team the early lead, but it was Olave‟s challenge on rookie FW Justin Meram in the box that gave Columbus an opportunity to equalize from the PK spot … FW Andres Mendoza converted the kick in the 76

th minute, then

assisted on MF Josh Gardner‟s game-winner in the 82nd

minute to seal the victory, sending RSL to a 1-6-0 mark all-time at Crew Stadium in reg. season play … The two goals allowed at Columbus were just the 5

th and

6th conceded in RSL‟s 11 games this season, both coming

in the final 15 minutes … The last time RSL allowed a pair of goals that late was 5/6/09 at home against LA, more than two years ago … Saturday’s matinee between RSL and Philadelphia kicks off at 2:00 p.m. MT and will air live statewide via KMYU 2.2 / Comcast 22 / Dish 12 and the MLS Direct Kick Package, and also on RSL‟s official radio partners – ESPN 700 Sports Radio and ESPN Deportes 1600 AM / Juan 106.1 FM …

RSL INJURY REPORT (as of 6/9/11)

OUT: MF Javier Morales (L ankle fracture dislocation); FW Paulo Jr. (L hamstring strain)

DOUBTFUL: n/a

QUESTIONABLE: n/a

PROBABLE: DF Robbie Russell (L hamstring strain)

BREAK UP THE UNION: Real Salt Lake began this

road trip with Major League Soccer’s highest points-per-game average and on pace to match the 1998 Los Angeles Galaxy’s MLS-record 68-point regular season, but those ambitions took a hit with the late loss Wednesday in Columbus … Now RSL (1.82 PPG) faces the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Union (1.75 PPG), who could leapfrog RSL‟s PPG average and move into 2

nd place league-wide behind Los Angeles (1.88

PPG) with a win Saturday afternoon … Like the Crew, Philadelphia is undefeated at home, posting a 4-0-2 mark at PPL Park this season … Like RSL, the Union allow an average of less than one goal per game, conceding just 10 goals this year in 12 games …

LAST YEAR’S PPL PARK MEETING: RSL drew 1-1

at Philadelphia in its lone previous trip to PPL Park last August 11, coming back from an early Sebastien LeToux goal in the 8

th minute with a stellar individual play by FW

Fabian Espindola to knot things up in the 17th minute …

Several RSL reserves started last year‟s meeting – also on 3 days rest after a prior road match – as GK Kyle Reynish made six saves to earn “Man of the Match honors” and DF Rauwshan McKenzie, MF Jean Alexandre, MF Nelson Gonzalez and FW Pablo Campos also played extensively, with regulars Findley, Saborio, Johnson, Beckerman, Olave and Rimando resting for the next game (a 2-0 home win over Columbus) …

Page 25: MLS Game Guide - Real Salt Lake @ Philadelphia Union

REAL SALT LAKE @ PHILADELPHIA UNION – SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 2011

OLAVE STRIKES AGAIN: Real Salt Lake DF Jamison

Olave – returning to action after a May 28 red card forced a suspension for last Saturday‟s 2-0 win over Vancouver – scored in the 7

th minute Wednesday, the 9

th goal of his 82-

game MLS career, and his first-ever road MLS goal … Of course, the biggest road goal of the 2010 MLS Defender of the Year‟s four seasons with RSL came on April 5 at Saprissa, his 63

rd-minute equalizer the critical

road score that essentially allowed RSL to advance to the 2010/11 CONCACAF Finals … Olave also had a goal at home in CCL group play against Toronto last September … Olave last scored for RSL in MLS play back on 7/2/10 in a 5-0 home win over New England …

ALEXANDRE THE GREAT: RSL MF-turned-FW Jean

Alexandre was named the MLS Player of the Week on Monday for his 1-goal, 1-assist night last Saturday vs. VAN, celebrating his first appearances on an MLS scoresheet with the weekly honor … Alexandre joins RSL MF Javier Morales, who won the award back in Week 2, on the 2011 list, which boasts 12 different players during the season‟s first three months … The pair of goals vs. VAN, both created by Alexandre – matched the team‟s total of two goals scored in its last six MLS games combined, after RSL had struck for 17 goals in its previous 8 contests … Alexandre‟s first-half goal marked the first time RSL found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes since April 9 @ NE – a feat matched Wednesday at Columbus – w ith the game at the Revolution also the last time Jason Kreis‟ team scored multiple goals …

ESPINDOLA MOVING UP THE CHARTS: Against

Vancouver last Saturday, FW Fabian Espíndola scored his second goal of the year and the 18

th of his RSL career,

vaulting him past teammate and close friend Javier Morales and head coach Jason Kreis (17 each) into sole possession of 3

rd place in the RSL scoring annals, one

behind Jeff Cunningham (19) and 11 behind leader Robbie Findley (29) … Espindola scored 2 goals in 12 games after arriving in August of 2007, and found the back of the net for 5 goals in as many games a year later … The young Argentine scored just 3 goals in 22 games in RSL‟s Cup-winning campaign in 2009, before his career-high 6 goals in 22 games last year …

SECOND OF SEVERAL THREE-GAME WEEKS:

Real Salt Lake concludes its three-game week Saturday at Philadelphia, the second time this season the team has played three games in 8 days or fewer … Earlier this year, RSL played at Saprissa, at New England and then home to Colorado, winning the latter two and advancing with a goal in the 1-2 loss in Costa Rica … That trip represented the first time RSL ever won the second game on the road … In the Jason Kreis era, RSL has played 3 games in a week a total of 17 previous times (in all competitions), registering an 22-15-15 record, including Saturday‟s win over Vancouver and the Wednesday loss … As indicated in RED below, RSL is 2-3-2 all-time under Jason Kreis in the second game of back-to-back road contests … The list: 2011: 4/5 @ SAP (1-2 L); 4/9 @ NE (2-0 W); 4/13 v COL (1-0 W) 2-1-0 6/4 v VAN (2-0 W); 6/8 @ CLB (1-2 L); 6/11 @ PHI 1-1-0 6/18 v DC / 6/22 @ CHI / 6/25 v DC 7/30 v CLB / 8/3 @ KC / 8/6 v NY *5 games in 14 days from Sept. 17 – Oct. 1 2010: 4/10 v SEA (2-2 T); 4/14 @ SJ (3-3 T); 4/17 @ LA (1-2 L) 0-1-2 5/29 v KC (4-1 W); 6/2 @ DC (1-2 L aet); 6/5 @ DC (0-0 T) 1-1-1 8/7 @ KC (1-1 T); 8/11 @ PHI (1-1 T); 8/14 v CLB (2-0 W) 1-0-2 9/15 v TOR (4-1 W); 9/18 v CHI (1-0 W); 9/22 @ AUO (3-2 W) 3-0-0 9/25 v COL (1-1 T); 9/28 @ TOR (1-1 T); 10/2 @ NE (2-1 W) 1-0-2 10/16 v DA (2-0 W); 10/19 v CAZ (3-1 W); 10/23 @ COL (2-2 T) 2-0-1

REAL SALT LAKE @ PHILADELPHIA UNION – SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 2011

CLEAN SHEET CRAZINESS FOR RSL: RSL GK

Nick Rimando recorded his 80th career shutout last

Saturday vs VAN, 44 of which have now come in the RSL Claret-and-Cobalt … Rimando has six of RSL‟s seven MLS clean sheets in 2011 (Reynish, April 9 @ NE) … Rimando also had two shutouts in CONCACAF play earlier this year at Columbus and vs. Saprissa … Rimando‟s shutout streak was snapped at 409 minutes May 28 v SEA, the 3

rd longest current run in MLS (Hartman, DAL,

599; Hesmer, CLB, 414) …

Against Vancouver, Rimando made four saves on the evening, including two spectacular ones in the final 10 minutes to preserve the shutout and improve his personal regular-season mark at Rio Tinto Stadium to 25-1-9 … The vaunted RSL defense has 7 shutouts in 11 games this season, allowing just 6 goals thus far …

ROAD WARRIORS, PREPARE: RSL has dropped

only two of its last 11 road games in MLS play, and only five of its last 18 overall if you include CONCACAF and MLS Cup Playoff road matches …

Back on April 30, RSL saw its nine-game unbeaten road run snapped, that particular streak tied for the second longest in MLS annals, equal to those of the 2004 Columbus Crew and 2007-08 Chicago Fire and trailing only last year‟s FC Dallas mark of 12 straight without a loss from May 1 – Sept. 25, 2010… This recent run of road success – marred by the playoff loss @DAL, yet enhanced by road results @ Columbus, @ Saprissa and @ Monterrey in CCL play – marked the team‟s first-ever nine-game undefeated streak away from home and places the squad‟s all-time regular season road mark at 16-57-23 (.259; 88 GF / 163 GA) … Since Kreis took over, RSL‟s MLS road mark is 12-33-18, with the four road wins in 2010 doubling the two earned in each of the 2007-09 seasons … Five games down (2-2-1, 7 pts), 12 to go in 2011 …

HOME COOKING RESUMES: Later this month, Rio

Tinto Stadium again sees a massive home stretch kick off, as RSL hosts six of its 8 MLS games from June 25 to August 6 on the Wasatch Front … Visitors in that period include TOR, NE, DAL, SJ, CLB and NY … On top of that stretch, RSL has the potential to host two additional games in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tourney, on June 28 and July 12 …

SIX WINS SAYS SOMETHING: Despite the pall cast

over RSL‟s recent week‟s with the CONCACAF Final loss and the long-term injury to Javier Morales, Jason Kreis wants to remind his locker room, as well as the fans and media interested in MLS that the team’s 6-3-2 record and 1.82 points-per-game average are on par with last year’s stellar performance … RSL‟s six wins in its first 11 games is a historically positive start for a team that finished 5-22-5 in its inaugural 2005 season, and one that has also had a six-win season (2007) and a pair of 10-win seasons (2006, 2008) … In the team‟s three previous playoff years, it did not record its sixth win until May 29 (2010), July 24 (2009) and July 12 (2008) … Saturday’s victory over Vancouver put RSL slightly ahead of its 2010 pace (when it was 6-3-1 after 10 games) and well ahead of its Cup-winning 2009 campaign, when win #6 did not come until PIONEER DAY on July 24 …

RECORD-SETTING DEFENSE … : RSL has allowed

just six goals in its first 11 MLS games this season for a stellar average of 0.55 GAA, which would project to just 18 goals allowed total over a 34-game season … Prior to the two goals allowed in the final 15 minutes Wednesday night at Columbus, RSL had only conceded two in the May 28 Seattle loss and Juan Pablo Angel‟s 81‟ rebound in RSL‟s 4-1 win over LA on March 26, as well as the Kenny Cooper goal on April 30 @ POR … This season‟s torrid pace still trails the Galaxy‟s stinginess a year ago, as Donovan Ricketts and LA allowed just two goals during their first 10 games … The fewest goals allowed through 8 / 9 & 10 games in MLS history:

THROUGH GAMES

YR TEAM 8 9 10 FULL

2011 New York Red Bulls 3 6 8

2011 Philadelphia Union 4 6 7

2007 New York Red Bulls 4 7 8 45

Last year, RSL allowed just 20 goals in the 30-game regular season, setting a new standard in MLS annals and breaking the 2007 Houston Dynamo record …

… BUT DOES IT WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS?: Real

Salt Lake was one of four 2010 MLS teams – RSL (0.67 goals per game), LA Galaxy (0.87), FC Dallas (0.93) and the New York Red Bulls (0.97) – to allow less than a goal per game … Prior to 2010, just seven teams total in league history boasted < 1.00 GAA, two of which won it all (KC – 2000 & HOU – 2007) …

Page 27: MLS Game Guide - Real Salt Lake @ Philadelphia Union

REAL SALT LAKE @ PHILADELPHIA UNION – SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 2011

DEFENSE THE FOUNDATION … : While RSL was

the highest-scoring team in MLS last year with 45 goals in 30 games for an average of 1.50 goals/game, defense takes precedence in Jason Kreis‟ system … Just last year, RSL amassed two of the top 5 shutout streaks in MLS history:

CONSECUTIVE MINUTES WITHOUT ALLOWING GOAL

TEAM MIN START END Houston Dynamo 727 6/10/2007 7/22/2007 Kansas City Wizards 681 4/19/2000 5/27/2000 Real Salt Lake 568 8/11/2010 9/25/2010

Real Salt Lake 567 5/29/2010 7/17/2010 FC Dallas 531 5/01/2011 5/28/2011

… BUT WHERE’S THE OFFENSE?: The back-to-

back scoreless draws on May 14 v HOU and May 22 @ DAL gave RSL four shutouts suffered in five games, after suffering only four clean sheets in the prior 26 contests … RSL was Major League Soccer‟s highest-scoring team in 2010 with 45 goals (1.50 GPG) and also averaged 2.16 GPG in its CONCACAF run, with 26 goals in 12 games, best in the tournament …

MORE ATTACKING ANEMIA: The back-to-back

shutouts suffered on April 27 (0-1 v. Monterrey) and April 30 (0-1 @ POR) marked the first time RSL has failed to score in consecutive games in nearly two years, as the team actually went three straight MLS games without scoring back in May of 2009, a drought that started with an 0-1 loss @ Chivas … Then the back-to-back shutouts occurred again less than 3 weeks later in the “Texas Two-Step” against HOU & DAL …

HISTORY v FIRST-YEAR OPPONENTS: Real Salt

Lake has now posted an 8-7-4 all-time mark when facing an MLS expansion opponent in its first year, but is only 3-5-0 when seeing a club for the first time … The list: YR TM 1

TURF WOES: The Timbers loss dropped RSL‟s all-time

turf mark to 2-8-5 all-time in regular-season road matches (both wins coming at Gillette Stadium vs. NE in the last 6 months) on the fake stuff, outscored 10-23 on aggregate … Despite playing on the hardened Rice-Eccles turf for nearly four seasons, the historic MLS Cup 2009 result at Qwest Field was RSL’s first-ever win on an artificial surface on the road in the team‟s five-year history to that point, although that game is officially recorded as a 1-1 draw decided on PKs … In 2005, RSL also dropped a U.S. Open Cup game at Minnesota on turf by a 4-6 scoreline …

SIGHTS NOW SET ON U.S. OPEN CUP: Now that

the team‟s foray in the 2010/11 CONCACAF tourney is complete, RSL will play 11 league matches from April 30 – June 25 before participating in another non-MLS competition in 2011, advancing automatically into the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 by virtue of its #2 overall MLS regular-season finish last year … For the first time since 2006, RSL will not have to participate in MLS “qualifiers” for the Open Cup … Due to the team‟s CCL run this Spring, along with the new 34-game MLS regular season and the Open Cup advancement, RSL is guaranteed to play at least 41 games during the 2011 calendar year before the playoffs, one shy of last year‟s club-record total of 42 games played …

IRON MAN BORCHERS RESTED @ CLB: 2010 MLS

Best XI DF Nat Borchers was rested Wednesday night at Columbus after playing a full 90 minutes in 9 of the team‟s 10 MLS matches and 5 of the 6 CCL games this Spring … Borchers has amassed a minimum of 2600 minutes each of the last three regular seasons, appearing in 89 of a possible 90 league games since arriving on the Wasatch Front in 2008 … Borchers has also started all nine MLS Cup Playoff games for RSL the last three seasons, played in all three US Open Cup matches and in 10 of the 12 CCL games … Earlier this year, Borchers missed the 2

nd leg of

the Columbus CCL QuarterFinal, and was rested in RSL‟s 2-0 W at NE following the Saprissa road match in the CCL Semis …

WHO ELSE IS MISSING @ PHILLY?: In addition to

perennial starters Johnson and Saborio and utility man Alvarez (all due to Gold Cup), RSL will be without MF Javier Morales (R ankle surgery), FW Paulo Jr. (hip flexor) …

YOUNG BOYS STEP UP, SEIZE THE DAY: The

void caused by injury, national team duty and suspension allows opportunity for several of RSL‟s younger players to get quality minutes with the first team, as DF Chris Schuler, MF Nelson Gonzalez and MF Collen Warner are obvious choices, along with newly-minted target forward – and reigning MLS Player of the Week – Jean Alexandre … Gonzalez‟ goal against Seattle on May 28 – his second MLS goal and third in an RSL uniform – was set up by teen phenom Luis Gil, who has impressed at U.S. U-18 and U-20 camps this year in addition to his RSL duty …

REINFORCEMENTS UP TOP: On May 27, in light of

the Gold Cup call-ups (Alvarez, Saborio) and injuries to RSL attackers (Paulo Jr., Espindola, Toia), RSL announced the signing of FW Artur Aghasyan, who like his cousin, former RSL FW Yura Movsisyan, wears jersey #14, dressed vs. Seattle on May 28 and played final 3 minutes last week vs. Vancouver …

Page 28: MLS Game Guide - Real Salt Lake @ Philadelphia Union

REAL SALT LAKE @ PHILADELPHIA UNION – SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 2011

GOLD CUP ABSENCES AFFECT RSL: Four

members of the Real Salt Lake roster – Arturo Alvarez (El Salvador), Will Johnson (Canada), Nick Rimando (United States) and Álvaro Saborío (Costa Rica) – have been named to their respective national team rosters in advance of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, taking place across the United States from June 5-25 … Both Alvarez and Saborío departed the RSL camp following the May 22 0-0 draw at Dallas to join their teams ahead of warm-up friendlies, while Johnson played with RSL in the May 28 home loss to Seattle before reporting to the Canadian side … Rimando will remain with his RSL teammates and serve “on call” for U.S. Men‟s National Team head coach Bob Bradley as the squad‟s third goalkeeper during the three-week tournament … Real Salt Lake will go without the services of its Gold Cup participants for at least four MLS matches against Seattle (May 28 – 1-2 L), Vancouver (June 4 – 2-0 W), at Columbus (June 8 – 1-2 L) and at Philadelphia (June 11) during group play … In addition, RSL will potentially miss a portion of the quartet for additional contests on June 18 against D.C. United, June 22 @ Chicago and June 25 against Toronto FC during the Gold Cup‟s knockout phase … Arturo Alvarez – El Salvador

Alvarez joins the El Salvador National Team for the third time in 2011, following his five appearances for La Selecta in January‟s Copa Centroamericana – during which he helped El Salvador qualify for the Gold Cup via a fourth-place finish in the seven-team field – and in a pair of friendlies at Cuba and against Jamaica in late March … The 25-year-old product of the U.S. Youth National Team system has now registered 16 “caps” in the white-and-blue of El Salvador since making his debut for the side in 2009 … Did not play Sunday vs Mexico due to hamstring injury … Despite a return to training, did not see action on Thursday against RSL teammate Saborio and Costa Rica … El Salvador Gold Cup Schedule (Group A) June 5 – 0 : 5 Mexico – Cowboys Stadium / Arlington, TX – 6:00 p.m. MT June 9 – 1 : 1 Costa Rica – BA Stadium / Charlotte, NC – 5:00 p.m. MT June 12 v. Cuba – Soldier Field / Chicago, IL – 4:00 p.m. MT

Will Johnson – Canada

At just the age of 24, Johnson has recently become a mainstay in the Canadian first-choice line-up, earning 15 caps for the Maple Leafs since his senior team debut at the age of 18 back in November 2005. Johnson‟s most recent appearances for Canada both came on the European continent, as the midfielder earned starting nods for coach Stephen Hart‟s side in friendlies at Greece on Feb. 9 (0-1 L) and against Belarus in Turkey on March 29 (1-0 W) … Johnson started and played 64 minutes, earning a yellow card, in Canada‟s 0-2 loss to the U.S. on Tuesday night … Canada Gold Cup Schedule (Group C) June 7 – 0 : 2 United States – Ford Field / Detroit, MI – 6:00 p.m. MT June 11 v. Nick Rimando – United States

Thanks to his standout performances for the Claret-and-Cobalt in recent seasons, Rimando has become Bradley‟s MLS-based goalkeeper of choice following a six-year hiatus from national team duty … The 31-year-old‟s most recent cap – his fifth for the Red, White & Blue – came back on Jan. 22, when he notched a shutout first 45 minutes in the USA‟s 1-1 draw with Chile in a friendly at The Home Depot Center, following his stint in the USA‟s annual January training camp in Southern California … Rimando, one of seven MLS players on the 23-man USA Gold Cup roster, has compiled a 2-0-0 record and 0.29 GAA (1 goal allowed in 315 minutes) in his five contests with the U.S.‟s senior side … United States Gold Cup Schedule (Group C)

Álvaro Saborío – Costa Rica

A focal point in attack for the Ticos for several years, Saborío‟s international resume continues to grow having bagged 22 goals across 64 appearances at the senior level since his debut in 2004 … A veteran of both the 2004 Olympics and the 2006 World Cup, Saborío recently celebrated his 29th birthday in style by scoring the first-ever goal in the inaugural match at the new Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose during a friendly against China on March 26 … His most recent cap came three days later at Estadio Nacional, when he logged the full 90 minutes against global powerhouse Argentina in a 0-0 draw … Scored 2nd of 5 Costa Rica goals in last Sunday‟s 5-0 win over Cuba, finding back of net in 41‟ after hitting woodwork and seeing apparent goal disallowed due to offside in one-way first half vs. Cubans … Removed from game after 70 minutes … Started and played a full 90, seeing another goal disallowed – much to his disbelief – in Thursday‟s 1-1 draw with El Salvador, in a game in which Sabo narrowly missed several opportunities …

MAYDAY, MAYDAY: 12-MONTH RUN OF

SUCCESS ON MULTIPLE FRONTS: Despite the pair

of difficult 0-1 losses vs. Monterrey and at Portland in the final week of April, Real Salt Lake performed exceptionally in the 45 games played between May 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011, losing only six times in that stretch, the rough equivalent of a season-and-a-half … Across MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoff and CONCACAF Champions League games, Jason Kreis‟ team posted an impressive mark of 26-6-13 and outscored opponents 75-33 since May 1, 2010 … RSL would have earned 91 points in this stretch … The MLS equivalents: (reg.-season games only) TEAM GAME 1 GAME 45 PTS

D.C. United 5/21/2005 7/22/2006 91

Prior to last April 30 at Portland, the lone MLS losses both came on the road at Dallas on July 17 and Oct. 30, sandwiched around the bizarre 4-5 loss at Cruz Azul … The fourth loss was the 1-2 decision at Saprissa which enabled RSL to advance to the CCL Final … RSL then dropped the 0-1 home game to Monterrey to snap the 37-game “all-competition” Rio Tinto Stadium streak …

TIME FOR A NEW STREAK: In Major League

Soccer‟s 16-year history, there have been 25 double-digit unbeaten regular-season streaks for its teams … Real Salt Lake’s historic 2010 season saw the squad amass runs of both 10 and 14 games, with the mid-April win vs. Colorado extending the latter streak to 18 games without a loss, one of the top three streaks in MLS history, just one game shy of matching the League standard … A year ago, FC Dallas matched the Columbus Crew’s 19-game run by not losing for 4 ½ months, then saw it crash to a halt by dropping an 0-2 decision at Rio Tinto Stadium … Dallas had the last laugh, however, ousting RSL in the teams‟ first-round MLS Cup Playoff matchup with a 3-2 aggregate win in October … The list:

MORALES A MARKED MAN IN MLS: Since arriving

in MLS back in August of 2007, the Argentine playmaker Javier Morales has played 116 games for RSL (93 MLS regular-season, 8 playoff, 3 Open Cup, 12 CCL) … During that time, he has been the most-fouled player in the League (reg. season only), an indicator of his role in RSL‟s possession game as well as the target on his back by opposing defenses … The list:

Most Fouls Suffered since 8/29/2007:

ALL-TIME RESULTS, WITHOUT JAVIER: Since the

talismanic Argentine Javier Morales‟ arrival on the Wasatch Front, RSL has played 30 MLS regular-season/playoff, CCL or Open Cup games without its playmaker, posting an 12-9-9 overall mark … Head Coach Jason Kreis‟ team has gone 9-8-7 in MLS reg. season play, 0-0-1 Playoff, 3-0-0 in CONCACAF and 0-1-1 in Open Cup sans Javi … Since the beginning of the 2009 season, that record is 10-6-8, including a surprising ability to score 2+ goals in 11 of those 24 games without Javier … The breakdown:

SEEING RED, BUT TO LITTLE ADVANTAGE:

Back on May 7, Real Salt Lake saw an opponent hit with multiple red cards for the third time in the team’s 190-game MLS regular-season history, with the 65-minute span with at least a one-man advantage the longest in club annals … For an incredible amount of 49 minutes, RSL enjoyed a TWO-MAN advantage over Chivas USA, playing 11-v-9 in deadlocked fashion prior to Will Johnson’s victory-clinching goal in the 87

th minute … On only one

prior occasion – Oct. 18, 2008, in the 2nd

-ever game at Rio Tinto Stadium – had RSL enjoyed a 2-man advantage over its opponent, but that was just for stoppage time of the team‟s 3-1 victory over FC Dallas, a game known primarily for Johnson‟s 2008 MLS Goal of the Year blast …

OTHER RED CARD MISCELLANY: In its history, RSL

has never played with just nine men due to disciplinary issues, and has even scored FIVE short-handed goals (Jason Kreis, 7/4/05 v. NY; Chris Klein & Kreis, 9/16/06 v. DAL; a Chris Leitch own-goal on 7/3/09 v. SJ; and Nelson Gonzalez late goal on 5/28/11 v. SEA) … On 25 occasions, RSL opponents have been subject to ejection, giving the Claret-and-Cobalt a total of 424 minutes with a man-advantage … During those minutes, RSL has seen a +9 goal difference … On the other hand, RSL has been victim of 29 red cards, succumbing to a -9 goal difference in a total of 569 minutes playing a man down … Incredibly, SIX of those nine goals came in one game, the 0-6 loss @NY in August 2006 when DF Jack Stewart was tossed in the 8

th minute

… in that game, RSL made it to halftime tied 0-0, but allowed an Edson Buddle hat trick in a 21-minute span of the 2

nd half, with another three goals scored during the

final 45 minutes …

VICTORY … ERR, EQUALITY GOLD KITS?: RSL

wore its so-called “Victory Gold” 3rd

kits for the fourth time in team history at Dallas on May 22, earning road draws on each occasion … Last year, RSL drew 1-1 @ KC and 1-1 @ PHI in a pair of August games in the Real Gold uniforms, while in this season‟s lone previous display of sartorial splendor, Jason Kreis‟ team drew 2-2 at Monterrey in the first leg of the 2010/11 CCL Final …

*CONCACAF Champions League

HOW DOES RSL GET BACK IN?: RSL probably

won‟t play another international side – exhibition or otherwise – until the 2012/13 CONCACAF tourney, which it could only qualify for through the following domestic-based mechanisms: U.S. Open Cup winner, 2011 MLS Supporters Shield winner, or MLS Cup 2011 participant … Had RSL defeated Dallas in last year‟s MLS Cup Playoff series, or even had Los Angeles advanced in place of Dallas to MLS Cup – RSL would have qualified for this year‟s CONCACAF Champions League due to LA essentially owning “dual” slots (Supp. Shield / Cup participant) and RSL finishing #2 in last year‟s overall MLS table …

KREIS CONTRACT EXTENDED THRU 2013: On

March 24, RSL President Bill Manning and GM Garth Lagerwey announced that the club has extended by two years the contract of current Head Coach Jason Kreis, keeping the youngest MLS Cup-winning manager in League history on the RSL sideline through the completion of the 2013 season … All-time, Kreis now owns a 53-44-37 mark in MLS regular-season, playoff and CONCACAF Champions League play …

Under Kreis‟ leadership, RSL became the first-ever MLS team (and one of just three non-Mexican teams) to win a CONCACAF group, posting a 4-1-1 mark and becoming the first-ever MLS side to advance CCL Final … The former striker‟s 2010 side was also the second-highest-scoring team in CONCACAF‟s group stage, with 17 goals in six games (2.83 goals/game) … During MLS play in 2010, the following numbers established by RSL set or tied new single-season league standards: fewest goals allowed (20), overall goal differential (+25), total home points (37), fewest home losses (0) and fewest home goals allowed (7). In addition to those league benchmarks, last year‟s edition set franchise-high records in wins (15), goals (45), scoring output (1.50/game), points (56), shutouts (15), road points (19) and road goal differential (+1) …

RSL’S INTERNATIONAL HISTORY: With the late

April 0-1 loss to Monterrey in the 2010/11 CONCACAF Final, RSL is now 12-7-6 all-time in international contests, with a positive goal differential (43 goals for / 33 goals against) … In meaningful int‟l competition, RSL is now 6-3-3 (26 GF / 17 GA) … In the Jason Kreis era, RSL falls to 8-3-2 vs. visiting international squads (does NOT include Toronto FC league matches; however, DOES include CCL games vs Columbus) …

FORTRESS STOOD STRONG FOR FORTY-TWO:

With RSL‟s 1-2 loss at home May 28 against Seattle, the team saw its MLS home unbeaten streak perish at 29 games … Just a month earlier on April 27, the 0-1 CCL loss to Monterrey (MEX) last week snapped the club’s overall home unbeaten run at 37 games across MLS, CCL and exhibition play … Those two losses in the last month dropped RSL to 5-1-0 at home in CONCACAF play, the team remains 21-1-9 in MLS regular season, 1-0-1 playoffs and 2-0-1 in international exhibitions … The aggregate scoreline in those games?: 79-21 …
